Yes... The way the numbers crunch, it strongly suggests that a statistical analysis may not have been done as part of the proof-reading process; statistically, it is quite difficult for the party to *not* end up winning. I mean, technically, right now, all six of you could 'crit fail' this check, and the challenge that follows it, and you would still end up winning the race!

That said, it is now all about how soundly you thrash your competitors (although it doesn't matter for reporting purposes).

Unfortunately Adalan is still struggling, although he does his best to keep up with the rest of the party.

Dran'Thor, with his superb knowledge of the natural world, once again comes to the party's rescue...

Deshacerla - BOT: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10.

...which is just as well, considering how badly a number of the party are struggling.

Nevertheless, it seems that the other teams are, likewise, struggling, as none of them seem to have caught up with you, at all.

Towards the end of the day, you reach the final checkpoint: This trial takes place on the open ice in a valley between stands of trees.

Among the tall drifts and dunes of snow and ice, a small hollow reveals signs of life. A large fire pit is encircled by tents and snow shelters as officials stand near the warmth of the blazing fire. Beyond the camp, a large sheet of exposed ice is marked by race banners. In the middle of the ice, a delicate ribbon lies partially frozen in the sheet.

A race official intones:

"This trial recounts the tale of Balgird’s brave survival on the open ice. While camping in the tundra, Balgird lost some precious equipment to the wind in the night. The following morning, he followed a trail of gear to discover one of his scrolls frozen in the ice. With great care, he moved across the thin sheet to where his scroll lay trapped. Balgird created a lens from a piece of the ice itself, focusing the sunlight on the ice to slowly melt it away from his scroll until he was able to free it.

Your challenge is to retrieve the ribbon, without falling through the ice, or damaging the ribbon itself."

Someone needs to make an Acrobatics check to make it out onto the ice (DC 16). If you fail, the ice cracks, but you can try again. Failing a second time... has consequences. If you succeed at the Acrobatics check, you can then attempt a Thievery or Nature check to retrieve the ribbon.

With the final checkpoint behind you, the party now only has a couple of hours of overland travel left, before reaching the finish line!

However, about half an hour after leaving the checkpoint behind you, the path takes you down beside a small frozen lake. As you pass by, a roar echoes forth from a small island just off-shore, as a giant, primeval-looking bear bursts forth, obviously intent on mayhem!

Also, before Dran'Thor asks, no, there is sadly no time to try Wild Empathy here.

As a show of gratitude, they give you a Scroll of Snowball.

The rest of the journey is uneventful.

Two tall, wooden linnorm statues mark the finish line to the harrowing Balgirdtrek. Crossing the line, the gathered crowd of spectators and participants cheers and applauds. Racers are met with blankets, soup, and medical supplies almost as soon as they are within the village of Frostgarten, where spectators are gathered to celebrate the competition and those who completed it.

Incredibly, the 'Pathfinder Pups' managed to complete the race *hours* ahead of their closest competitors, so as one last formality, you are tasked with helping to prepare the feast and medical supplies for the
remaining racers. Once the last of the teams cross the finish line (something which takes nearly 12 hours!), the festivities begin.

A massive feast is prepared, and you are given a place of honor at the banquet table. Through much cheering, it is noted that you are welcome to come back again next year, to participate in the next running of the race!

Scenario completed :-)

The dwarf is happy with the festivities.

Thank you for your hospitality! It was a nice race to participate. I'm looking forward to participate in the next running of the race next year if I can. The climate here is bracing at least.

Thank you again for running

"What a feast!"

She mingles with the rest of the teams, her writing kit at the ready to take statements for the Pathfinder Chronicles.

Thank you for GMing!!

Bair clubs the bear a few more times after it drops, "GET SUM!"

Eventually, after his frustration fades, he tromps along after his group as they return to the racing trail. Crossing the finish line his mood finally lightens, allowing him to enjoy all the festivities.

The next morning finds him in a strange tent with strange people and a throbbing headache. A good night for sure!

Good run, thanks again! Well handled with all those skill checks. The scenario didn't seem to drag like those tend to end up doing. :)

Sovereign Court

No worries! I should be able to send out chronicles after work today.

Commencing: Quest #5 - The Dragon Who Stole Evoking Day:

The tea shop is filled with lively conversation as dozens of Sothis’s citizens enjoy their midday refreshments. An older human man, Amenopheus sits at a small table in a far corner just beyond the sight of the other patrons. The man picks at a pastry that has been mostly falling away to crumbs. He looks up and puts on a relieved smile.

“Pathfinders!” he calls out. “Yes, yes, over here, please. I’m glad Norden was able to reach you on such short notice. I’m sure you’re all quite busy with preparing for the upcoming festivities. As am I! Well... to be honest, I was expecting to be busy, but things are not going as I’ve expected.”

He produces a note from his breast pocket. “You see, I have been happily performing a variety of duties for Pharaoh Khemet for some time now. However, as of late, the Ruby Prince’s requests have grown far more demanding, and he has given me far less time to meet his needs.”

Amenopheus sighs and stares into his tea for a moment, a forlorn look on his face, before placing a note on the table. “The Ruby Prince has requested that I handle festivities in the Old City for Evoking Day—a holiday sacred to the faith of Nethys, the god of magic. It’s a big celebration, with dancing, magical duels, and brilliant fireworks. The fireworks in particular are something the public looks forward to, especially those who want to participate but who lack magical skill of their own, and the Ruby Prince specifically asked that I distribute a supply of fireworks that were ordered for the event. The holiday’s tomorrow, but unfortunately, my busy schedule kept me from finding the request until quite recently. When I finally located it, I rushed over to the storehouse where the fireworks should have been awaiting distribution, only to find it empty. I fear I must locate the festival supplies so the Evoking Day celebration is not ruined for the people of Sothis. However, attending to my other duties has left me short on time, so I thought it was best to call in a favor with the Society.

Pathfinders, I need you to find those supplies as soon as you can! But I request that you keep my name out of your investigation. If the pharaoh were to learn about this, er, situation, it would not do my reputation any favors. I suggest heading to the storehouse in the Old City down by the docks to see what you can find there. Perhaps one of the locals noticed what happened to the supplies. It wouldn’t hurt to ask around. We haven’t much time, so it’s best that you get going from here.

Do you have any questions?”

Thorax burps, nods and pats his distended belly. It appears to have grown noticeably since you last saw him.

"Most goblins I've encountered love fireworks," the old knight chuckles, "but sire has single-mindedly focused on preparing for the eating competitions this year."

He opens up a belt pouch and hands Thorax two curative potions before turning to Amenopheus and asking, "Is there someone in particular we should speak with at the docks?"

The dwarf smiles looking at Mara. She should be very pleased to be sent in mission in warmer region than the North one.

Then he strokes his beard during the briefing.

And what if the fireworks are already used when we find them?

Sovereign Court

Amenopheus shrugs helplessly.

"No one in particular that I know of. As I said, try looking around the storehouse, and see what you uncover."

He then nods to Dran'Thor.

"If they have been used... well... that would be a disaster, but I think we would have heard about it if that had happened..."

Once again, you have a knack for asking questions that they don't assume you will ask ;-)

Mara basks in the warm sun. Ah, Osirian, how I've missed you. Much, much nicer than trekking across miles of snowy wastelands!

The fact that it's festival time doesn't hurt. There's even a mystery to solve, which is much better suited to her preferred skill set. She listens intently to Amenopheus' request. "Who delivered the fireworks? Did anyone else know they were being stored in that warehouse?"

She jots down a few notes. "To begin with, I see two major possibilities. Someone robbed that warehouse and the fact that the fireworks were there was a coincidence, or someone stole the fireworks specifically." She considers the problem, turning around what Amenopheus had said in her mind.

"You say that this would be bad for your reputation if it were discovered you lost the fireworks you had been tasked with distributing. You also say that you've been getting an unusual number of requests lately, ones that are becoming increasingly difficult to fulfill. Is it possible that someone is setting you up to fail? Who would benefit if you fell from grace, so to speak?"

Paranoia, perhaps, but Mara was a detective before she was a Pathfinder. If someone wants to quietly get rid of Amenopheus, arranging for him to be assigned such a task and then making sure he very publicly fails to deliver would be a good way to ensure his downfall.

Well with such a loot to find out, I'd better to prepare to cast a Create water spell just in case.

The dwarf isn't sure about what will happen. He's more confident with snow and beasts he can handle with. Even if sometimes the beasts hear less than the others.

Bair seems quite comfortable with the location, "Ehn't home, buddis close." He motions to the pastry remains, "Gonna eahdat?" If a no is indicated he opens his toothy maw and pours down the bits of bread and icing into his gullet.

As flecks of pastry are wiped off his face with his sleeve as he comments, "Ah, goddit. Some punks downdere prolly knicked daboomers. We dropda hammah on dem, deyl crahk."

The stocky goblin thinks for a bit, reminiscing some recent good fights. "Anyah... any hammahrin limits oah whadavah gedda job dun ok?"

More questions, to which I am not given the answer (or at least, to which Amenopheus doesn't have the answer) :-P

Amenopheus shrugs sadly.

"I have been trying to stay out of politics - frankly, recently, I haven't had enough time, even if I had wanted to. I am sure that there are *some* people who would benefit from my fall, but I honestly don't know who they are.

As for who delivered the fireworks, or who might have known they were there, I don't know - I hardly think that enemies of the pharaoh would bother themselves with stealing festival supplies. Though, the effect on local morale would be significant, now that I think of it. My only guess is that a local vendor may have stolen the fireworks to sell them for the festivities at an extreme markup, but given what would happen to them if they were discovered, I doubt anyone would risk that..."

The dwarf finish to stroke his beard hearing what is said.

Well, I think we should go and simply investigate. Some of us are good for this task. I prefer the wilderness and the pure air. But others prefer cities and their tricky tricks, like stealing fireworks.
