GM Roxxie |
The gillman gingerly takes the cloak with a solemn nod and sighs.
"Thank you. I will ensure this gets to his family." The gillman delicately folds the cloak and places it near his robes.
He takes a deep breath and looks at you all for a long while. "I am Uori. While I cannot share what the waters tell me, I will tell you what I can. This place is sacred to my people. It once was sacred to Aroden, the dead god of humanity, but over the last hundred years the carvings in the room you came from have weathered and melted. I wager Aroden's influence will fade completely very soon. I know that Aroden's followers sometimes practice rituals on the city statue, and I figure it has to do with what they learn about Aroden in the cave of drawings. You're free to try your own rituals, so long as you don't pollute these waters."
Uori frowns. "There are two tunnels that branch from here, but I'm afraid I know nothing about those."
Ruzz Fuzzleberd |
Ruzz considers the gillman's words and nods sage-like. He keeps his mouth shut as he's never been known to be a diplomat and he fears saying the wrong thing in this situation.
Vipera Berus |
"I sssaw a ssstory on the wall about a human bringing light to dark placesss. Perhapsss these Aroden's practiced a ritual like that on this altar. I'm sure it won't hurt to try."
Vipera wades into the water to get close to the model city. She cast's her dancing lights spell and moves the lights slowly through the miniature streets of the diorama, attempting to shed light onto the shadowy bits of the display.
Ruzz Fuzzleberd |
Ruzz waits to see if anything happens. He smiles a bit at the idea of people performing rituals that they don't understand or necessarily believe in.
GM Roxxie |
Magic thrums through the caverns and fills each of you.
Each of you get a +1 insight bonus to AC if you have taken damage since the start of your last turn
Uori's face remains stoic, and he motions at Vipera. "Many of the rituals I have seen are much the same. As I said, do as you wish, so long as you do not pollute these waters." The Gilman moves and sinks down into the waters. He keeps his eyes lazily scanning all of you, to ensure he does not miss anyone talking to him.
As for the two adjoining tunnels, approaching the tunnel to the East earns one the smell of rot. To the West, running water can be heard.
Ruzz Fuzzleberd |
Ruzz points down the tunnel to the east and motions to everyone else.
"Based on the scent I'm guessing we've got something dead down that way, should we check that out first?"
Vipera Berus |
"We should go down that tunnel, but I want to sssay that I felt a little thrum of ssssomething magic come from thisss altar when I completed the ritual. Perhapsss more ritualsss will aid usss in the battlesss to come."
Ready to move on, but is there anyone else who wants to play with the altar first?
Ruzz Fuzzleberd |
Ruzz grins a bit at the altar then motions to the figure worshipping in the water.
"Maybe you can pray to his god, this place seems to be holy to him as well so perhaps we might gain additional blessings? Otherwise I'm ready to move when everyone else is."
GM Roxxie |
Giving one last change for rituals at the altar before moving us into the smelly cavern tomorrow morning.
Yaerstenn |
Yaerstenn, still wet from his trip in the pit, goes into the shallow waters.
"Aroden, was it, now?"
Kn. Religion: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
The old man fails to remember much about the Dead God, only that he is... well, dead. Still, he simply raises his hands up and begins speaking with a loud voice, amplified by the cave's reverberation:
"We have come to solve the mysteries of this place. Thee who hears my prayer, allow us to pass through this challenge unscathed, and light our way so the voice of the Gods may be spread!"
GM Roxxie |
Unfortunately, no additional flow of magic comes forth from the altar.
As the group comes together to investigate the next cave, the cave's damp air becomes increasingly stale. The stench of decay grows stronger as they travel, until the tunnel opens to a small cavern littered with bits of broken glass, rotting pieces of paper, and other litter.. as well as several unsettling things. At the back of the cave is a humanoid corpse, face down and clearly dead. Around the cavern, there are two living skeletons and two living corpses, looking quite a bit like gillman.

Vipera moves into the room and tosses a thin sheet of slippery grease underneath the feet of two of the undead creatures. She stares down the closest zombie, but quickly realizes that this creature is not intimidated by her unnerving gaze.

GM Roxxie |
Blue reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Red reflex: 1d20 ⇒ 6
The undead monsters slip on the grease and fall prone.
Cynan lines up a perfect shot, but somehow manages to fire straight through the skeletons bones. Hit, but no damage
The skeleton that slipped stands up and moves towards the living creatures.
The other glares with vengeance at Cynan, steps up, and swings a broken sword at him!
Pink attack vs Cynan: 1d20 ⇒ 17

The skeleton gives off a wicked grin as its sword draws blood.

The skeletons swing wildly with their scimitars and can't seem to connect.

Acid Splash: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17

The gnome runs back into the previous cavern squealing in delight the entire way as he thinks about his next spell!

AoO: 1d20 ⇒ 15

Ruzz's next acid orb bubbles straight into the zombie, and it connects with a hiss. Skin lops off of this animated corpse, and it looks ready to fall apart.

Urushi takes a step back towards the choke point, and attacks the blue sashed skeleton.

Not trying to be needlessly couragous here. The crowded conditions were really limiting where I could move. I don't remember how people were positioned exactly, but withdrawing only protects you from the first square of movement and you can't five foot into a square occupied by an ally, so one of those things probably factored into what I did.
GM Roxxie |
Vipera does indeed hold the charge I believe.
Vipera attempts to do the skeleton in with light magic, but the skeleton dodges away. Cynan draws a sword and prepares himself.

Ruzz Fuzzleberd |
Ruzz looks rather excited but also frustrated that he hasn't got a good shot at anything. With all the big folk blocking the way and none of them following the advice to make a bottle neck he could fill with fire the gnome just sighs and steps forward once more to throw a glob of acid at the purple zombie to the right of Urushi.

Assuming that Urushi is going to step back to take them one at a time, Cynan calls out to Vipera, "Get ready to heal Urushi!"
I am picturing a painful ballet in which Vipera takes a 5ft step and readies an action to heal Urushi when he is in range. Then Urushi takes a 5ft step back, gets healed and attacks a zombie. He then has cover from one. Next round Vipera takes another 5ft step and readies to heal Urushi again (as does Yaerstenn, maybe?), Urushi takes another 5ft step back and then it's one undead at a time while Urushi has two healers keeping him up. Sound about right?
Cynan can't do anything through two allies and has something like a 40% chance of doing anything with the creatures DR. Note to self, buy some holy water...
Vipera Berus |
Cyan, I considered your plan and the current situation and I think the more straight forward approach of just getting to Urushi and healing him would be a better idea.
Urashi is at 2 hp and that skeleton gets to act right before him. There's a good chance he will go down if it lands a hit. Plus, if the skeleton takes him down, then its next logical action would be to move down the corridor and we wouldn't have a way to get to him. He won't be able to five foot step on his turn, but he still has the option of withdrawing safely.
From the look of the map, there is some cave wall between Urushi and the purple zombie right now. Urushi and the zombie should have cover relative to each other. That wouldn't have kept him from being hit last round, but it does mean the bottle neck would begin in the square immediately behind Urushi. I can hold the tunnel for one round and frankly, I'm more expendable then him right now.
Sorry, I know that throws a wrench in your turn, but I don't like the odds of hoping the skeleton will miss.
Use Magic Device: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Vipera shakes the wand into her hand in an imitation of Sarenrae ritual. The wand glows in her hand with soft glowing light as she darts towards Urushi.
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Shoot, that wasn't a lot of healing, but it increases his odds at least.
Urushi |
I think waiting to heal me would have been a better idea. Now you are forcing me to take 3 attacks per round instead of just 1 or 2. I think the skeleton has a 10% chance of hitting me (+0 vs AC 19). I would definitely have been willing to take that risk. I was hoping to step back and then start fighting defensively and go for the long slog.
Has anyone tried to make knowledge checks? Urushi has fought zombies before and should know what type of weapons work against them, but I don't think I am allowed to use that knowledge in PFS.
Ruzz Fuzzleberd |
I'm willing to do a knowledge roll, would arcana be appropriate since Necromancy is involved? Also I think the GM was hinting that some items in the bag left to us might be useful here
Cynan G Elberion |
Urushi, if your PC has learnt things in previous adventures then that is totally valid. That's how I've seen it GMed before. I forgot about the bag, who has the bag?
Roxxie, this is a tight one. Would you be willing to allow a retcon. Urushi did not get to contribute to the 'table talk' as he might have liked. If Vipera wants one, that is.
