Tam looks around in almost a panic, another arrow already knocked. Looking at each potential exit. Hyper alert for further threats.

"Are there any more? Where did it come from? Why was it here?

A part of Fryle wants to go over to the formermly mechanized creation and start anyalyizing it to the point of dissection, but manners temporarily trump his pursuit of technological knowledge.

"I'm Fryle Anscoggin. Council Freddert informed us that your father had gone missing on a return trip to the Black Hills Caves just outside of town. All of us here have joined forces to venture into the caves to try to find him," he explains. "We came here to see if there was any information you could give us that would help us in our search. Looks like we got here just in time. Are you all right?"

Cera opens her mouth to answer, hold on, humans like greetings and formalities. "Good to see you again, Val. We are here to ask what your father might have told you about the caves. We are going to go in after him."

Kanek is amazed by the construct even as it starts to power down. While the others are talking to Val, he quickly loads another round into his pistol before examining the machine, attempting to deduce how it works.

Aemin quickly stows his warhammer and helps Val to her feet as best he can.

"Yer lucky Councilor Dolga sent us to ye for information. That tin can over there might of torn up what's left of the place and perhaps you along with it!"

He pats down his apron to remove any dirt from his hands and offers Val a friendly handshake while smiling a bit timidly.

"We maybe ain't been properly introduced before but I used to come here quite a bit back when you were still in business. Mostly to be hearin' yer father's tales and clashing pints with the other smiths... Better times then. So we all be looking to find the good Councilor Khonnir Baine as soon as we can manage. Aemin Whitespark at your service!"

Male

Finally realizing it’s Cera, she gives her a big hug.

”So you are going to be entering the caves below Black Hill? I can offer you the tavern as a place to rest, recover, and use as a base of operations. I’ve already stored bedrolls in the tavern—I apologize for the lack of nicer accommodations but I will provide you with all the food you need while you’re in town. I’d rather not give you any of the tavern’s beer, ale, or spirits, but if some of those supplies go missing, I won’t make a big deal of it provided you don’t get so drunk that you wreck the place!”

”All I know is he returned with that thing after his first trip. Then all of a sudden it just came alive.”

Tam nods at Val giving her a sympathetic look before speaking harshly, his words and tone at odds with his gaze.

"He should have known better. You can not trust a robot. They may seem harmless at first, but in the end they are nothing but killers."

Aemin steps back a bit and feels a little embarrassed for his misplaced forwardness.

"Right. Well, thank ye kindly for yer hospitality. We'd best be going now. Have to go see Joram Kyte about some waterbreathin' magic before entering them flooded caves. Sure there's plenty to do around here without the likes o us gettin' in the way. Farewell."

He will turn to leave and wait for the others outside.

Cera nods, then remembers she's supposed to say something. "Thank you, Val." She heads towards the door, but turns around before leaving.

"I believe we will find your father."

At Val's words, Fryle walks over to the remains of the mechanized creation. "You say that he brought this thing back with him when he returned from his first trip?" he asked. He looks over the remains, trying to understand what made it work. "Did he say why he went to the caves the first time?"

Fryle:

You look over the robot and know that it wasn't really malfunctioning, but coming alive and trying to repair everything. You see that it was rebuilding it's power cells by absorbing some type of energy.

The group heads to the temple before they venture into the caves.

Bronze wind chimes and clockwork statues decorate the domed portico of this compound dedicated to the goddess of invention. The oldest faith in Torch, Brigh’s temple sees regular worship from many of the town’s citizens, and also includes a meticulously organized workshop managed by the town’s religious leader, Joram Kyte. His friendly demeanor, active interest in the metal trade, and innovative crafting skills helped land him a seat on the town council many years ago. Joram’s temple includes a small shopfront selling magic items and gear. In addition to many objects under the town’s base value, the shop currently offers for sale a flare gun, a scroll of find traps (CL 10th), three scrolls of restoration, a scroll of raise dead, and a wand of rebuke technology (11 charges).

"Interesting thing about that machine," Fryle says to the group. "It was trying to repair itself but it needed some type of energy source to do it."

When the group reaches the temple of Brigh, Fryle introduces himself. "Hello, sir," he says to the priest. "Councilor Freddart told us that you would be able to help us. We plan to venture into the caves below Black Hill and she spoke of you being able to temporarily bestow on us the ability to breathe water."

Aemin walks up to Joram Kyte and introduces himself in case they haven't already met.

"Greetings Councilor Kyte. Aemin Whitespark at yer sevice! We're here in need o' yer aid. Lookin' to enter the caves and search for Councilor Baine who's been missin. Heard it was underwater... parts anyway. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated."

Male

”Hello.”
Joram Kyte looks around at the group.

”I am able to bestow water breathing on you to aid in your mission.”

Gray hair and leather like skin, he stands before you. His leather apron down to his knees, is full of tools for a metal craftsman. His hands appear worn after many years of swinging a hammer.

”I cannot give you any of these wares, but you may buy them if you have the gold.”

"Thank you. I certainly cannot afford your wares, though.”

"Right. We're ready fer that spell whenever you are, good sir. Fer that, ye have me thanks and me word to bring back Khonnir Baine in return if we can."

Aemin takes hold of a prototype adamantine bauble around his neck: A sentimental memory of his first creation using the Torch and hopefully not his last.

"As a craftsman meself, I wouldn't be givin' me hard wrought goods away neither so there ain't much point in us dallyin' around here with no coin ta spend!"

The dwarf waits patiently for the magic to take effect before bidding the councilor a short but grateful farewell and departing with his companions.

Ready to move on here as well but I don't mind waiting if anyone else has any questions for Joram or wants to do something else before hitting the caves.

Tam accepts the magic without a word, giving Joram a curt nod as they cast the spell. Once the spell has settled he looks over the group.

"We should move with haste. It would not do to be caught beyond the water when the spell wears off."

AC:11 (T:11) (FF:10) | F:1 R:1 W:3 |HP:7/7| Per. +2 Male Human Sorcerer 1

"I will accept your gift of water breathing, Councillor Kyte," Fryle says. "Unfortunately, I do not have the funds to purchase anything you currently have for sale."

"I agree with Tam. We should go to the caves when we are done here unless anyone else needs to take care of other business in town."

Male

Joram excitedly casts water breathing on the party and then he departs. Wasting no time the adventurers make their way to the cave. The group makes its way to Weeping Pond for the swim to the caves.

Pond:

This placid-looking pond is set off from the surrounding area by a crescent-shaped escarpment. No vegetation grows on the banks of this pond, and the waters carry a bitter stink of sulfur and other chemicals, enough to make the eyes water after spending too much time on the shore.

Everyone give me a fortitude save

As you swim you eerily notice no fish. No matter how hard you look you cannot find a single one.

Cavern Entrance:

The actual entrance to the Black Hill Caves is via a 45-foot-long submerged waterway that connects the Weeping Pond of Torch to the cavern. This underground stream is fairly placid, and navigating these waters requires only a successful DC 10 Swim check.

The air in the caves is bitter and stinks of mold and vinegar, but it is breathable despite its unpleasant flavor—narrow vents and fissures provide enough air circulation to keep the atmosphere breathable, if disagreeable. The caves themselves are dark for the most part.

Entry Cavern:

Need light source
Dampness hangs in the air of this cave, condensing into heavy moisture on the slick, stone walls. The calm, dark waters wind around to the east up north, along a stony, soot-scarred beach. A five-foot-high ledge sporting several stalagmites rises to the east, beyond which a low-ceilinged cave beckons.

The water here averages only 2 feet deep, and maintains the same unhealthy taint found outside in the Weeping Lake. The foul-smelling air makes the eyes water in this cave, but despite this worrying effect, has no further impact. Scorch marks can be seen on the shore.

Survival DC20:

Tracks of several people who climbed up onto the ledge leading to another area—this is sign the previous explorers of the caves.

Although nocturnal, the fire beetle lacks darkvision—it relies on its own glowing glands for illumination. Caged fire beetles are a popular source of long-lasting illumination among eccentrics and miners.
