OP-1 |
Being sure this will results in flash backs or nightmares in some later date in his life OP-1 descends.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16 (+2 if it's a trap)
Azara Thenason |
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
"The way out is through," Azara comments to those who are hesitating before following Twik down.
"Don't worry about the dark. We're all made out of stardust," he continues.
Hef Sadir |
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
Hef smiles, though you can only see it reflected in his eyes as his mouth remains covered. "But some of us don't wish to return to stardust right now. Either way, you are correct though, we must continue."
He secures a cable long enough to reach the bottom and begins the descent, shining his spotlight as he goes with his extra set of hands.
"Sunshine" Korvin |
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Sunshine brings up the rear, clicking on his flashlight as the interior gets dark. "Any way to tell if this passage goes to the gullet? I've already been digested once today, and that's enough for my taste."
Hadir, Psychic Knight |
Hadir's Max perception is 21
thanks for your patience while I was out. Settling back in and catching up now
Hadir climbs down Hef's cable and makes a mental note to buy more of his own.
I expected the inside of a living being to be a little more varied and interesting than this
DM Bigrin |
Knowing that the cable can easily hold the weight of all of you, plus a small-sized vehicle, you anchored it deeply in the floor of the tunnel and began to slide down it to the tunnel below.
Twik started down, followed by Hef, and then Hadir, Azara, and OP-1, with Sunshine bringing up the rear. You keep about 10' of distance between you, so Sunshine is barely in the gullet when it happens. The nozzle-like protuberances that were masked by the lumpy nature of the surface suddenly began spraying liquid calcium into the shaft. The sprays were high power, and solidified quickly, making it difficult to both keep your handholds on the cable, and safely descend. After a few seconds, the spray stops.
The gel-like substance covering you rips you from the cable and you fall to the floor of the cavern below. While the gel does limit the falling damage somewhat, the impact is still hard.
Falling damage if you failed your reflex save.
Sunshine 6d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 1, 3, 3, 3) = 15
OP-1 5d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 2, 6, 3) = 22
Azara 4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 4, 1) = 14
Hadir 3d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6) = 10
Hef 2d6 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11
Twik 1d6 ⇒ 5
Also, anyone that failed the save is now cocooned in a hardened calcium shell, unable to move.
Hadir, Psychic Knight |
reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Hadir's grip slips for a second, but he is able to make a new grip and avoid falling.
"Sunshine" Korvin |
Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Promotional Reroll (+2 GM novas): 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 + 2 = 16
Sunshine loses his grip for a second, but then catches the cable as he falls. He tightens his whole body, then let’s out a heavy sigh. ”This is why we don’t volunteer to be swallowed.”
Hef Sadir |
Reflex DC 15: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Hef is covered in the substance and looses his grip, plumeting down past the group. You simply hear "waaaatch oooooouuuuut" as he flies past Twik slamming into the ground with a thump. He lays scarily still.
Hadir, Psychic Knight |
When Hadir reaches the bottom he will try to tear away or crack the cocoon around Hef
Twik – “The Jack” |
Twik quickly descends the remainder of the distance and tries to break Hef free from his cocoon (and anyone else who ends up the same way).
Reflex Save: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
OP-1 |
OP-1 ducks out of the way
Reflex save: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 9 + 1 = 30
With evasion, but since I think this an all or nothing save that doesn't matter
"What was that? And more importantly; will it do that again?"
Hadir, Psychic Knight |
Hadir tries to smash the cocoon open without hurting Hef.
Azara Thenason |
That escalated quickly.
Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Azara makes no noise as he gets covered in quick drying goo and plummets to the floor, bouncing once, rolling half a turn, then settling on a relatively flat edge.
"Ow!"
"Sunshine" Korvin |
Sunshine touches down and starts working at chipping away at the calcium shells around his allies.
OP-1 |
Seeing it's careful attempt amount to nothing
Athletics?: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 1 = 27
OP-1 puts some muscle into it smashing and tearing at the hard shell.
Twik – “The Jack” |
Twik moves next to OP-1 and starts smashing at the same spot....
Athletics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Hadir, Psychic Knight |
Hadir joins in. He reaches out to the cocooned party members with his mind Are you okay in there? We are trying to get you out!
You know, I'm not sure Telepathy is automatically two-way, but I don't have time to look it up right now. Does anyone know if they can answer Hadir if they are not also Telepaths?
athletics, ACP: 10 + 10 - 2 = 18
"Sunshine" Korvin |
Sunshine lifts the butt of his rifle over Hef's cocoon and slams it down on the calcium shell.
Attack vs. KAC 10: 1d20 ⇒ 15
Azara Thenason |
Azara's cocoon wiggles a little, likely with whatever motions he can make while trapped inside it.
Hadir, Psychic Knight |
We are fine. Trying to get you and Hef out.
Hadir carefully raises his Pike over his head and stabs it down at the cocoon.
coup de Grace, damage: 2d8 + 16 ⇒ (6, 5) + 16 = 27
OP-1 |
Seeing Hef almost get stabbed in the heart OP-1 decides to see what a knife does to Azara's shell as he stabs it.
To hit AC 10: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
So guessing I cracked it a bit and did 2 damage out of the 5 we need to do with 5 hardness?
"Let's try that again"
To hit AC 10: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Unless something happens while we try this?
Hadir, Psychic Knight |
Hadir tosses his Pike to the side and drops to his knees at Hef's side, checking his wounds.
Hef Sadir |
The shattering stone cocoon around him breaking under the onslaught, Hef is unsure if the shards of stone or his fellow Kasathan were responsible so he grunts and holds pressure on his wound. "I'll be fine, I understand the need to hurry to free me. Is everyone else okay?"
He looks around at the others hacking away at... there is Twik, Hadir, OP-1 and Sunshine so that must be ...Azara. He moves over to assist in getting him out or healing him afterwards, if necessary.
Hef plans to Rest for 10 minutes and spend a resolve to regain his Stamina once Azara is free.
Twik – “The Jack” |
Looking at his small form and smaller equipment, Twik understands the pointlessness of him trying to crack open the shells encasing his comrades. Instead, he does a quick look around the current area in ensure there are no more nasty surprises.
Perception: 10 + 11 = 21
DM Bigrin |
OP-1 continued to smash away at the cocoon covering Azara, slowly chipping away at the hardening material.
While Hef recovers and The others try and get Azara free, Twik looks around the area. He sees several other forms that may have once been cocooned creatures, and in one corner, Twik finds ribbons of green cloth poking from the stony surface. Looking closer, he sees that the ribbons look very old, and beneath the calcium covering, he can see the vague outline of a humanoid with four arms.
"Sunshine" Korvin |
Sunshine leaves the chipping at the calcium to the beefier Starfinders, instead poking around with his rifle. He follows Twik over to the other cocoons. "Looks like we may have found the missing kasathas from the crashed ship. Wonder if this calcium has life-sustaining properties. I'm guessing not."
Hef Sadir |
Hef pulls his sledge out and takes a whack at Azara before settling in to recover his breath.
Sledge vs. KAC: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20 for Bludgeoning + W.S: 1d8 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 3 = 10
Azara Thenason |
"Ah back into the...light," Azara says as he works his way out of the calcium cocoon like some sort of oversized chick. Down this deep, "light" isn't exactly accurate.
"Thank you," he says to the Kasatha who pulled him free and anyone who helped.
He moves away from where he fell but not too far before sitting down. "I just need to rest a few minutes," he says.
Yes. Taking a 10 minute rest, if allowed.
Hadir, Psychic Knight |
While the others rest, Hadir tries to break the old bodies out to see who they are.
Hadir, Psychic Knight |
I was mentally including that in "the old bodies"
DM Bigrin |
Not worrying about injuring someone obviously long dead, Hadir smashed the cocoon. It was more difficult to break open than yours had been, probably due to many years of accretion. It was a kasatha, body mostly dissolved with only the armor and other metal and plastic materials remaining completely intact. In one hand was clutched a spherical holorecorder. The act of freeing it caused it to come to life, showing a foot-tall image of a female kasatha, dressed in green armor. A faint audio crackles to life, and you all hush as you strain to hear it.
“It has been three days since I landed, and I believe I am the first sapient creature ever to visit this planet. What a privilege this discovery is. Thank Talavet for the tales she has charged me to tell. I shall not fail in this duty.”
“When I first beheld the vast, dry, expanse of this plateau, I felt the call of home. A year have I journeyed, with only my crest-eater cubs for company, and as a citizen of the Idari, I have never seen the deserts of Kasath with my waking eyes. Yet, they are as clear to me now as if they stretched out before me. Now I descend into the depths of this strange, alien desert to find what rests beneath it. Mother, father, I miss you and all the members of our family. Soon I will return to add my story to the records of our House. Perhaps one day that story will be retold, and the lessons others have taught me about myself will be repeated in the halls of our ancestors.”
“But if I should fail, I leave behind this record in the hope that other pilgrims follow in my footsteps. And while it is hope beyond hope, I ask that if you, strangers, find me before the carrion birds have made a meal of my flesh, perform the work of the adata and preserve my memories, for what they are worth, so that I may be returned to my people. For even in failure, there are lessons to be learned, and love can still be found and remembered.”
“I am Exu Jana Onorab of House Hadulan, and this is my Tempering.”
The adata are a special class of kasatha aboard the Idari who remove a thin slice of brain material from kasathas who die aboard the vessel. This brain matter is added to a vast ancestral record which kasathas can access, even asking questions of those who have died.
Azara Thenason |
Azara watches the holorecording even as he finishes catching his breath, twisting and turning his arms and legs to ease the aches and bruises from his fall out of them.
"How brave. How sad. A shame her light was snuffed before it's time," he comments.
Culture: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
"We should definitely take that back to the Idari."
Hef Sadir |
Hef nods, "Agreed, I am glad that you respect our culture and her final wishes. It bodes well for the pathfinder society if we all do so for each other."
He whispers while collecting her body in his native tongue,
Does anything, mechanically speaking, need to be done to collect her memories or can we simply take the body and gear with us when we leave?
Hef Sadir |
Hef looks through her gear and asks, "Anybody need any of this stuff?" After that is resolved he slings her body over his shoulder, checks the map for the right direction for their mission and heads that way.
"Sunshine" Korvin |
Sunshine nods at the kasatha corpse. "Talk about putting their heads together. Would be nice if we had something like that." He also takes his flashlight and points it around the surrounding area, hoping to illuminate some of the nearby terrain.
Hadir, Psychic Knight |
what gear does she have? So we find anything on the other bodies?
Thank you for sending me on this journey, Weydan.
DM Bigrin |
Spending a few more minutes cracking into the other cocoons, you find nothing but the strange shell-covered birds and something that looks like a 5-foot tall cricket. All have been dead for a long time.
The tunnel you are in leads about fifteen feet off one direction, before coming to a dead end. The other way continues the downward descent. The temperature is definitely hotter down at this level, and your suits are being put to the test.
You occasionally hear a skittering sound from the tunnel ahead. Whatever it is, it sounds big.
The tunnel continues to slope downwards, and the travel is gentle for the most part. Eventually the tunnel takes a sharp turn and empties out into an enormous spherical chamber some 100+ feet in diameter. From your own tunnel, you can see the entrances of dozens of others, covering almost the entire surface of the chamber. Your suit sensors tell you the surrounding air is about 120 degrees Fahrenheit, more than enough to cause problems for anyone not encased in a suit with environmental protections.
In the center of the chamber is a massive golden crystal, the source of the heat and almost 90 feet in diameter. It is suspended in the chamber like a miniature sun, held in place by many gray shell-covered columns that stretch across the 10-15 foot gap between the crystal and the chamber walls.
"Sunshine" Korvin |
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Sunshine looks around. ”Looks like we found the heart? Maybe we can make it less passionate about eating people?”
Hadir, Psychic Knight |
Hadir takes 10 minutes to install the Jump Jets into his armor.
Why not?
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Or perhaps the brain. I wonder if it could understand us if we get close enough?
Hadir eyes the crystal and starts inching closer.
OP-1 |
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 (+2 vs traps)
Looking at the miniature sun OP-1 comments
"That's not something you see every day"
" ..at most once a month.."
And feeling the temperature makes sure it's suits environmental protections are turned on.
