Welcome to Varisia. Scarred by the depravity of ancient wizards and reclaimed by a wilderness of beasts and savages, only in the past few hundred years have the steps of civilized men again trod the wondrous and mysterious lands of Varisia.
Within the region, we begin this adventure in the coastal town of Sandpoint. The town has faced few trials and dangers over the course of its forty-two-year history, but unfortunately, that is all about to change.
Welcome to Play by post Pathfinder - for those interested - feel free to roll up a character and provide some background here, will let you all know when we're ready to go :)
As for me as a GM - I got into Roleplaying games over ten years ago using play by post style similar to this, so in a way, it is where it all started for me. I've played multiple systems (including others designed originally for tabletop play) in this format, so if you have any questions, I'm open to answering them. I have also of course played both pathfinder and starfinder at an actual tabletop, and know the differences in tabletop play, and PbP.
Of course, everyone is in different time zones when playing PbP, so for that reason, there is a posting limit of once per week, to help keep the flow going, and you can expect to get back within 3 days maximum (though usually quicker if it's something that doesn't move things terribly forward). With that in mind, those interested, please show interest below along with your character.

Couple of questions!
What method of rolling do you wish us to use? Or is there a point buy?
Is all Paizo material available? Is anything restricted?
Are we using traits? Background points? EiTR Feat Tax rules?
Also as someone that plays in and runs a couple of games on this board, I would perhaps note that once per week is *quite* slow and might prevent the game from moving apace.
That said I'm quite interested. I'd lean towards either an alchemist or investigator, most likely.
Simmyish |
Will post answers to the sorts of questions that are asked. If there are any others, don't hesitate to ask me :)
FAQs
Q1. What method of ability score generation is being used?
A: Standard 4d6 keep 3 method
Q2. Are there any campaign feats, and are they required?
A: There are, but they are not required - if you have access to the RotRL Players Guide, they can be found in that book on p. 4.
Q3. Are you using feat taxes?
A: We'll be using the modified feat taxes found here
Q4. Will you be using background skill?
A: I like the idea of having extra points specifically for character development options, so yes - you can find more info on that here
Q5. What level will the campaign start at?
A: Level 1
Q6. What will starting gold be?
A: Take your class average
Q7. Are alignments limited?
No, but this is not intended to be an evil campaign. That doesn't mean to say the characters won't act in such a way that directs it as such. I'll leave that up to the party
Q8. What material can I use?
Anything that has been officially published by Paizo will be accepted.
As for the posting requirement - it's not a "only" post once a week situation, if you can post more often - then that's absolutely fine - a week is just so that if someone doesn't respond we can keep things moving without them. That's to allow for RL issues coming up. It allows time for people to respond etc.

The dice gods are generous tonight! Time to get creative. So out of curiosity, both unchained and original variants of classes are okay? I will admit a desire to play a synthesist, but totally understand if that's not okay.
Also, what are the limits on races available for selection?

Last set wasn't even a 10 pt buy, if the GM allows me to do a reroll...If not though, I do understand.
o.o Wow much better array. 18,16,16,12,10,8 Could easily make something fun outta that. But I won't push forwards until GM gives the ok.

Huh, rerolls eh? Interesting...
For the other people interested I am probably going to roll up a beastmorph/vivisectionist alchemist and become an absolute mauler in melee.
Stat: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 4, 3) = 15
Stat: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 3, 1) = 8
Stat: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 2, 6) = 17
Stat: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 2) = 20
Stat: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 1, 6) = 17
Stat: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 6, 3) = 16
So that'll end up being...
18 16 15 13 13 7
The 7 hurts but that's still a 36 point buy so I think I'm good with that >.>

Okay, let's give it a try. Maybe finally I can play a RotR till more than chapter 1.
4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 2, 4) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4, 6) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 3, 2) = 8
4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 3, 1) = 9
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 2, 1) = 5
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 5) = 23
I got a 4 and an 18. Tempting, but let's reroll and see what happens.
4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 1, 4) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 1) = 16
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 6, 6) = 18
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 1, 6) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 6) = 17
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 3, 3) = 12

4d6 - 2 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 5) - 2 = 14
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 1) - 1 = 15
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 3, 3, 2) - 1 = 8
19 build points, if I did the math correctly.
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 2, 6, 5) - 1 = 13
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (5, 3, 5, 1) - 1 = 13
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 6, 5, 4) - 2 = 15

4d6 - 2 ⇒ (3, 2, 2, 6) - 2 = 11

And 20 build points. Heh.

Interesting choice. Considering.

Rolling for fun... not sure if I will submit or not.
I: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (3, 2, 3, 3) - 2 = 9
rolling: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (5, 5, 3, 1) - 1 = 13
dice: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 4) - 2 = 12
for: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 3, 5, 4) - 1 = 12
fun.: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 5, 2, 4) - 2 = 11
.... 10 point buy... not cool, dice gods... not cool.
Let's: 4d6 - 4 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 4) - 4 = 18
try: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (3, 1, 2, 5) - 1 = 10
this: 4d6 - 3 ⇒ (3, 4, 3, 4) - 3 = 11
again: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (2, 1, 6, 5) - 1 = 13
shall: 4d6 - 4 ⇒ (4, 6, 6, 5) - 4 = 17
we?: 4d6 - 4 ⇒ (4, 4, 4, 4) - 4 = 12
... now that is much better. So much so that I actually feel obligated to make a character submission now. ;)
Fair play I am in an RotRL game, but I missed everything from 1/3rd of the way into book 1 until pretty far into book 3... so kinda want to see that. That said, if you want to pick someone else on principle I would understand.

Them: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 2) - 2 = 16
Bones: 4d6 - 3 ⇒ (3, 4, 4, 5) - 3 = 13
That's an 18 buy. Not terrible. Not great either.
Papa: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (6, 6, 5, 1) - 1 = 17
Needs: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (2, 1, 3, 5) - 1 = 10

30 is much better. I'll see what I can whip up.
Andrasta |
Hawk here with Andrasta, the resident trouble maker accompanied by her looming guardian Ancile, the animate suit of armor. Crunch has all been handled (see here and here again) for stat blocks. General build idea will be to focus on claws and grappling as she levels, with extra care being given to take what damage she can. I blame tea and untamed joy at playing a synthesist for the speed this came out.
Quietly, the dark haired girl hissed her satisfaction. That map had cost her two months wages, and she had initially thought she'd been duped. The trail of skeletons that had been awaiting her proved that something, perhaps not the mighty weapon the halfling had promised, but something was ahead of her. Granted, she very well would have died and still came close, if not for careful observation of the bodies. Combined with somewhat of an obsession with dungeons and their ilk, she had worked past two seemingly bottomless pits, three swinging axes, one crush room, and some weird rotating puzzle, with victory in sight.
Placing her dagger in the crack between the stones, Andrasta gave it a good stomp to ensure her makeshift hold wouldn't break on her. Using a section of rope, she began to rappel down. Halfway down, she heard the noise of her blade working itself free only a moment before she plummeted to the ground.
Landing in a haphazard tumble, Andrasta's mouth did it's best impression of a Sandpoint sailor. Picking herself up, she glanced about looking for traps. Nothing I can see, and it would kind of take the sport out of it at this point. One could say many things about the changeling, but lacking in courage she was not.
As she neared the pedestal, she couldn't help but note how...plain the supposed weapon of lore was. Dark hells below, it wasn't even a weapon, just a dark gauntlet with an engraved sigil of an armored fist on it. Kind of self defeating, isn't it? Picking it up and feeling no sudden shock, Andrasta sighed. "Stupid of me to assume someone didn't just make up this story." Even as she berated herself, the young woman idly put it on, noticing it fit her sharpened nails with ease.
As soon as it fitted to her hand, the gauntlet lifted itself up, hoisting the hag born into the air kicking and struggling to free herself. "You sure didn't fit this much going on!" As she spun, she noticed the massive figure looming before her.
It looked like some sort of dark overlord, dark, engraved plate adorned with spikes sporting a fur lined cloak of all things. In a booming baritone that reeked on things high on Andrasta's list not to mess with, just below dire sharks, it chortled. "Seems you're stuck child."
Twisting to leverage her legs against the gauntlet, the changling retorted, "Well, I don't suppose you have some universal solvent on you?" Even as she quipped, her eye caught the distinct lack of a gauntlet on the figure's right side, the same side currently trapped on her end. Putting two and two together, she realized her situation with a groan.
Giving a grunt of approval, the figure leaned close, the empty great helm sending shiver's down her spine. "You have fire girl, and decent skill to make it to my resting place." Grabbing her trapped limb with his remaining one, she got the distinct feeling the armor would have had a vicious grin. "You'll make a wonderful partner."
Andrasta fancied herself a tough woman, but as the figure fell apart and launched itself towards her, she screamed. As it coalesced around her, she felt the searing sensation on her forehead, prompting even louder screams. As she collapsed, the magic holding her up dissappeared, she managed to run a hand over her forehead, noting the sigil's presence on her head even as her addled mine noted the sensation even though the ebony plate.
"Good, you still have your wits about you." Whirling at that deep baritone, the young woman spun, her movements faster than she had thought possible.
"What...?" A flex of her hand did little to dispel the sensation of strength that flooded her veins.
"My strength is your might, my aegis is your defense, my fury is your wrath. You may call me Ancile.

Regarding the drow noble, I'm open to it if your backstory explains it well enough in the sense of what they are doing involved with the rest of the group, and why they would be interested in Varisia.
Due to homebrew rules being used, and the fact we'll be starting at level 1, this does not qualify for organized play credit.

I don't follow. Neither of these things disqualify giving PFS credit in "campaign mode." See this quote from the PFS guild guide
Campaign Mode: Campaign mode is intended to allow
a group to experience adventure content in the manner most enjoyable to the player, even if it is not within the normal bounds of Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild rules. Campaign mode is available for all sanctioned Adventure Paths and for Pathfinder Modules that specifically include this option in their sanctioning documents. In Campaign mode, GMs can use their own rules for character creation and running the presented content (the entire book or series). They are not even required to use the Pathfinder RPG rules, but they must run the adventure using a tabletop roleplaying game and use the Adventure Path or Pathfinder Module as the primary source for adventure content. After running a game in Campaign Mode, the GM
should report sessions on paizo.com as usual and distribute Chronicle sheets to her players. A player may apply the earned Chronicle sheets to an appropriate Roleplaying Guild character in-tier for the Chronicle Sheet. Alternatively, they may use the sheet to create a new character. This is similar to applying credit to a pregenerated character (see Applying Credit on page 7), except that players can apply Campaign mode credit to characters of the same level or lower and they do not need to expend resources on their earned Chronicle sheets to resolve conditions. GMs receive full credit for the adventure as normal (see page 17).

Okay. I have Doctor Werner Krieger. He's a Ragebred Skinwalker that doesn't actually know he's a Skinwalker. He thinks he's a Human with bizarre powers. It pushes him into alchemy in almost an Island of Dr. Moreau type of way. He wants to find a place where he belongs and people he can trust, and discover more about who he is and where he comes from.

.... ok, maybe you were making an Archer reference, maybe you weren't.... but THIS is what popped into my head when I say your character name... and the class type doesn't help matters if you that wasn't what you are going for....

So... thinking I will dust off and slightly retool an old friend of mine for submission here: Asa Norowareta, Dhampir Magus (Bladebound and Kensai archetypes).
Based on my second rolls, strength would take a small hit of 2 points (down to 13 from 15), but dexterity would leap up by 2 (up to 19 from 17) as compensation. About the only other skill difference will be an added point of charisma (raising it to 13).
Now obviously I will need to tune her down from level 3 back to level one, but I think it will give you have a good idea of what I plan on doing with her if I leave her as-is for now. As a final change, I might swap her deity in the end... not sure and its a minor detail to her (not like she has a deity based trait or feat).

In Magnimar, he joined up with the Sczarni and worked for them as an enforcer. Although by no means a “good man” he found there were some lines he could not cross. He skipped town as another caravan guard and found himself in Sandpoint.
Writing Sample: A huge hulk of a man, 6’6” with broad shoulders, strides into the room and sets down his pack. If his size were not intimidating enough, his numerous tattoos, ritual scars, and stern, piercing expression settle the impression. He glances around the room and then makes his way to the shady character in the corner. His deep voice rumbles out, “Jubrayl? Name’s Masdok. The family said I could find work here.
