"Look I'm all for this whole hero business. But the least you could do is not ruin my own. Scum is scum, but not everyone on the Underside is rotten to the core. You would do well to remember that before murdering folks in cold-blood becomes a habit. I'm owed that much at least."

He shakes his head.

However, that could - should - have been an execution after interrogation. Wasting our time, killing potential information sources.... they help the dragon cult more than us. Brax rolls his eyes as Eska and Navarre begin to argue over the wisdom of choices made by group members since banding together. Ignoring the bickering, he rolls up his sleeves and starts trying to move boxes and barrels to form a makeshift barrier in the sally-port opening.

Raakuzedu’lon’ros hears the voices mainly Arianna scolding him.

"You will find...ONLY...lies with...THESE...minions. If you expect...TRUTH...from them then the...TOWN...is already lost." he cleans his blade on the dead cultist's clothes and then spits at the corpse.

btw did I find anything, DM?

"I...DO...not expect your...KIND...to understand. I have battled...THESE...cultists far longer than...YOU...have walked these...LANDS." with precision he sheathes the blade and shuffles towards a crate to assist in creating a barrier. Reaching it he turns his head to Navarre, "If you were...SO...quick to...SPEAK...with these cultists you...HAVE...had ample opportunity. The others could...HAVE...yielded more information. So NO I will not...BEAR...this filth's burden."

Conflict like this is what makes one party so much more interesting than another :)

Raakuzedu’lon’ros picks through the kobold and cultist corpse. It's a grisly affair, especially given the way several of them died, but he is able to find some treasure. The cultist holds a finely wrought small gold bracelet, while the kobold had a carved bone statuette. Added to loot tracker

Brax ignores all of the bickering around him and starts stacking boxes and barrels to seal off the sally port. It's not quite as sturdy as a metal gate, but as he hefts the last box up to the top of the small opening, it looks like it will at least buy some time should another group of raiders approach.

Eska considers the situation after she's said her piece. "There are humans among these raiders if the bulk of the forces are leaving the city they may break for camp in the outskirts. Means campfires if they're careless. We should be able to track a few down I doubt a counter-assault is expected especially with a group of so few numbers."

Hm? What? Did someone say 'intra-party conflict'?? XD

Orion had finished picking up un-broken bolts just in time to get SICK AND TIRED of the word-noises coming from the direction of the person-of-questionable-ethics. "And why do you think that, Eska? Did your Oh-so-accurate theif's...cant...tell you that??" 'What did they call a group of thieves? A flock? Surely not a School.' Somehow 'thieves cant' seemed to go together so he just went with it.

"In case you're not up on current events they just ATTACKED the TOWN directly! And you are spewing some nonsense about how they're leaving the city?
Sure, their dragon has left, and thank you for that. But why would they launch an assault at the sally port just to run off with their tail between their legs so they can go roast marshmallows and sing Rally 'round the Banner.

Before we take your advice and remain motionless until dark, how about we actually recon into the town and see what is going on, eh?"

Eska gives Orion a narrow look unsure how she got on his bad-side.

"This is a snatch and grab, we heard as much not a determined siege. "

Remember it is just past 2 AM and thus it is dark, sunrise should be in a few hours. Unsure if character Orion just wants to take jabs at Eska but it seems they are both suggesting similar courses of action.

"My, don't we have Fangs tonight. It appears the blood is still up. Hunter come up with a plan or something you're better when you think at a slower pace. Continue as you are and you won't have to look far for a pointless fight." Eska's words hold a dangerous weight.

Sorry for being late to the party. Had to work late tonight. And no worries. I'm a firm believer you should be able to take whatever you dish out. Fire away. :P

Arianna's control over her temper snaps at Eska's words towards her and she turns on the other woman with her eyes practically glowing.

"At least I don't go around murdering innocent people for sport! You can try and tar me with that brush if you wish, but it only shows that you have the same black heart as them! There was nothing to be gained by slaying a woman and her child! Perhaps ruining your chances of work with them is the best thing I could have ever done for you!" She snaps at her before turning and venting the remainder of her fury on Raakuze.

"AND YOU! You may be older than me, but that doesn't make you any wiser! I said knock him out. If he is a coward, he'd negotiate for his life. Or I could have tried to trick him, or any number of things! And before you say anything about the damned murdering son of a sow and the female cur that Eska was meeting with, he might as well have admitted that he killed those people for whatever sick entertainment he got from it. As for the others. I'm sorry, next time I'll ask them to kindly tells us where to find the nearest group of prisoners to free before poking out their eyes!"

Still fuming, she turns and helps Brax finish the barricade. Once that is done, she stews for a bit before hearing Eska's barbs at Orion.

"Oh shut up. If you hate us so much, go sell us out to the cultists. I'm sure they'd gladly let you walk free in exchange for telling them how to get in and where the weak points in the keep's defenses are," Arianna says before going back into the keep and looking for the best vantage she can find.

Eska cocks her head considering that Arianna might accidentally be onto something. "I mean it's not the worst idea. Both Dragonhunter and I do speak the tongue. Arianna nearly trips in surprise and stumbles another couple of steps before turning back to Eska.

"I'm not sure I'd want to go through with that. If we get caught, we'd be in really deep trouble," Arianna says, the memory of the blue dragon and the memory of her terrifying fight with an ogre coming back and quenching the flames of her ire. "Anyone that was posing as a prisoner would have to be roughed up, unarmed, and unarmored for it to look convincing."

After some time passes, a few defenders, along with Eadyan Falconmoon and the Governor, show up at the sally port. Nighthill enters the ready room and examines the blockade... and balks at the solution, of course. "Smoke and ashes! This isn't gonna hold for long, especially with those damn rams!"

"Governor, allow me." Eadyan rolls up his sleeves, giving Brax a cheeky look. "Not that there was anything wrong with the stack of barrels, but we cannot hope to defend against kobolds if we think like kobolds. At least defeating their advance was help enough." He nods at two of the defenders, and they move around the barricade to hold the gate up. Eadyan raises a glowing palm to one of the hinges, and the metal attaching it to the wall suddenly reforms. "This will take some time," he lazily adds, moving his hand at various broken spots in the gate.

... But it's not over yet.

Just then, a more armored defender runs over, clearly a sergeant or someone higher up the guard food chain.

Beads of sweat drip from his forehead as he doubles over, panting. "Governor! Something... Something massive approaches the main gate! Come quickly!"

Dark Archive

"I just DID come up with a plan!" Orion snaps back at Eska and gestures fiercely over the walls. "The enemy is out THERE! The town is being destroyed out THERE! Any prisoners to be gotten must be gotten out THERE! So what we REALLY need to do right now--"

Just then the defender runs up and deploys his missive about the approaching enemy.

"---is get back to the GATE!" Orion shouts as he heads at a dead run over to the main gate.

Navarre though of Talis, and her cultist father.

No, these cultists are not all the same. They are first and foremost people - and people come in all types.

He bit his tongue. He had worked stables enough to know that you can't make a mule move by pushing it... that and Brax's rebuke hit home hard. The dwarf had once again proven himself to be the most sensible and level-headed of the group.

"Let's deal with this new threat and consider our options after."

He proceeds toward the main gate, but this time takes a position on the walls.

Arianna's heart races again as she hears the news that something big is approaching the gate. She rushes to catch up to the others and mutters to Brax.

"Look at it this way, you don't have to worry about being blamed if it falls again," she says with a chuckle while a weary dread pulls at her as the long night wears on.

The front gate explodes as a huge hulking horror strides through the smoke and dust of the rubble. He's at least eight feet tall, and covered in muscles rippling through his cobalt blue dragon-scale skin. Bloody heads of women and children hang from his belt , some sewn together on his back as crude armor.

Sixteen of the smaller reptilian creatures - kobolds - skulk through behind him, prodding five bloodied and terror-stricken people: an old man in a blood-soaked ragged tunic, a shrieking and sobbing woman with bloodied and barefoot feet and two dirty children, naked, crying, with bloody streaks running down their dirt-encrusted bodies.

The dragon-man casually tosses aside a 1-ton chunk of the gates.

He shouts at the walls:

"People of Greenest! I feel generous tonight! See you these prisoners? I give them to you - if you but send a single champion to fight me!"

He picks up the man and rips him in half, his organs spilling below as the man screams in terror and pain.

He then rips his head off, adding it to his belt.

"I kill one prisoner every five minutes until you FACE ME!"

The brave mother you'd rescued, Linan, rushes to your side and hoarsely whispers, "No. No, no, no... That's the baker and his family. G-good friends of ours," she trembles.

"Oh frag him," Orion hisses to his companions. "I say on my mark we all throw what we've got at him. Let's see him kill old men with our arrows in his guts and three blades in his side.

Besides, why would we think he'll honor any pledge he makes?"

Orion checks OrcDoom, making sure the bolt is loaded properly.

"Otherwise..." Orion ponders, "I could say that I'm the champion...after I've mounted the wall in that farthest corner." he says, pointing to part of the wall farthest from here but still in sight, "I could state my challenge and then see how many bolts I could sink into him while dancing away on the wall.

...

Although, I'd rather we all charge him at once."

Arianna freezes as she sees the horrific scene before her. Her eyes widen and her hands cover her mouth to hold back the scream as this beast tore a helpless man apart. She's faced orcs, goblins, kobolds, bandits, and even an ogre once, but this thing is something else. Something horrific in its brutality. She looked to the survivors before the kobolds and her mind raced. If only she were clever enough. If only she were stronger or quicker!

Each scenario played out the same way in her mind. There was no way to kill the kobolds fast enough, even with all of the others in their makeshift party working on it. Maybe if they had enough archers, but then they would risk killing the family, those that were still alive anyway. Raakuze and Brax might be able to handle the brute for long enough, but they'd likely die in the process. She can use that one spell she knows, but if it fails, the family was as good as dead.

"W-we only have to face him, right? Maybe we could face him and have him release them before the fight? I... I don't know. I don't know what to do! If we try any trick and he sees it, the kobolds kill them. We don't honor his terms, he has the kobolds kill them. It'd take a divine miracle to save them!"

She buries her head into her hands and pulls at her hair as she grasps at straws.

Hearing first Brax then Eska challenge the beast, Arianna looks up and to them. Her mind goes blank for a moment as she focuses on the half-man, half-beast that stood where the ruined gate had been for the first time. A brief memory flashes before her eyes. As the last phrase is completed, the image of a blue dragon lounging where Eska had stood just a moment ago explodes into view with a flash.

"Iffen he hurts that wee one, ye have me blessin' ta turn 'im inta a leathahry pincushun," Brax says loudly to his brothers and sisters-in-arms. He unslings his battleaxe, sets it down, spits in both hands and then picks it up by the handle in both hands.

"If it's me time, 'n I'm goin' out fightin, not quaking in muh boots," the dwarf grouses, giving each of his companions a quick look and a nod of respect.

Brax marches out, making sure the half-dragon can see him. "Oy! Here, ye lame excuse fer a saluhmander!" the dwarf yells. "Th' eyes of all who kin hear me are witness to ye actions! Will they tell of a half-lizard man of honah or 'ill they tell of a gutless snake who welshed on 'is word? Let the wee lads 'n lasses go 'an face me if ye have th' sand!"

Raakuze stiffly places a hand on Brax's shoulder in what might pass for a sign of respect as the dwarf sets out. Brax is not quite sure if Raakuze is looking at him or through him as an over-long moment passes.

Navarre follows Brax out of the fortress, but stops just outside the gate. He had been cautiously holding his one spell in reserve since his nap in the stables. it might have seemed miserly or even cruel not to heal Raakuze after the fight at the sally port, but that had not been the intention.

My one spell may make the difference between life and death for Brax, should he be defeated. I am glad I did not squander it.

The half-dragon throws the the child aside when Brax marches out. "Greenest's champion! Show me your best!" He pounces towards Brax, slicing the air with his greatsword, the heads of Greenest's innocents dangling from his belt. His walk turns onto a full on charge at Brax, but he stops suddenly, his claws digging into the mud.

The image of the blue dragon appears, and the kobolds chatter nervously amongst themselves.

The man-dragon pauses, gazing up at it. "Why do you protect these citizens, dragon?" He shouts up at Eska, lowering his sword. "You call me a coward, yet you are perched on the wall sending a lowly dwarf out to fight me!"

The man-dragon paces back, looking at his kobolds. All sixteen of them are slowly stepping back from the front gate. "I see the pitiful wyrm larvae are already shaking in their boots!" He shouts at them. And if it were one or two kobolds, they might think twice, but once four start rushing away, another four follow, and soon, all of the kobolds are fleeing Greenest as quickly as they can.

He turns back at Eska, speaking in Draconic. "Dragon, join me, and serve the Cult as I do. Prove your loyalty by killing this dwarf yourself, or I will."

Oh yay! That worked!

Hearing that her illusion is working for now, Arianna grabs Linan and motions for Orion and Navarre to follow her while the dragon man is distracted. With the kobolds fleeing, now was the time to get the family out of harm's way.

"Quick and quiet. We'll get them out and then we'll hit the bastard," Arianna whispers to them, pointing out the circuitous route she planned to take to keep out of the dragon man's sight and then the family. Hopefully with four of them ushering the survivors, they could get them out of harm's way before she lost the spell.

"If things go poorly, take the kids and the mother and I'll try to keep ugly distracted," she adds before making her way as stealthily as she can to where the survivors are.

Arianna i believe Orion is away from the field trying to aim the ballista.

Eska-Dragon laughs as the kobold's go fleeing. "It seems unlike your minions you do have a spine."

"Very well I accept your offer as these humans and their ilk have been scornful of late. Perhaps the Cult would appreciate One, of my talents." though she is keeping up an act she's surprised at how true these words come to her as her newfound allies seem to judge her quite poorly unless she's risking life-and-limb for them simply based on some of her loose associates.

"But this form would do little for sport" (queue) illusion break as Eska returns to her "normal" form

"A New Challenger has arrived to face you, Brax the Unworthy! You'll be my meal ticket out of this insignificant town"

She intercepts Brax who is on his way to the Half-dragon. With her Fang bared she gives the dwarf a wink.

Ah, okay, she'll just wave at Navarre.

As Eska speaks, Arianna tries to move the dragon illusion's mouth in time to the woman's words. The young elf was surprised to hear Eska throwing in her lot with the cult, and it was all she could do not to curse herself and hope that this was still part of the plan for getting the hostages to safety. She picks up on the cue to dispel the illusion and has the dragon's form glow like lightning before dispersing to reveal Eska standing where the dragon had been.

"C'mon, we still need to get those people to safety."

'All the kobolds are leaving??' Orion thinks in shock and amazement. 'Well b$@#$++s that worked.'

As the half-dragon charges at Brax, he transfers his battleaxe to his right hand and readies his shield with his left. He braces himself to meet his attacker's charge but his eyes widen when his adversary comes to a stop, looking up. Brax doesn't take his eyes off the half-dragon, thinking it a ploy to distract him.

When the dwarf's opponent begins speaking to someone else, Brax forces himself to take a quick look over his shoulder. Spying the blue dragon, he almost dropped his battleaxe. Is Arianna crazee? Wha' 'appens when this half-leezard realizes th' dragun ain't real?

Brax's fiery ire at the moon elf's gambit is quickly doused when he sees the kobolds guarding the prisoners turn and flee from the courtyard. Acting quickly, he begins to stride toward the half-dragon to draw its attention away from the townsfolk. Hearing the banter and seeing the dragon 'transform' into Eska does nothing to stop his movement until she moves to block his path to the enemy leader.

"I'll be yer ticket outta 'ere, alright!" Brax yells at Eska "A one-way ticket straight ta 'ell where ya belong! If ye want some, come git some," Brax challenges, winking back as he brings his shield up and advances to 'engage the dragon in human form' in combat.

Eska the Knifengale lashes out at Brax the Unworthy. Both her daggers whirl in a captivating display of thrusts, weaves and cuts. How Brax manages to get his shield up in time to block while assailed at seemingly all angles in anyone's guess.

The two combatants cover alot of ground as they engage and break in a prolonged battle. Brax unfortunately is not able to mount much of an offense under Eska's onslaught.

Having lost track of time and not entirely sure what the plan is at this point she moves to end her performance ~Somebody better do something~

Eska goes for a dramatic finish

"I didn't figure you for much of a Dancer, but your time is up!" Eska announces loudly quite certain she has got the measure of her foe and goes for a dramatic finish!

Raakuze bristles under his armor as he watches Eska batter around Brax. Fighting each other rather than the chromatic minion who now stands alone. If this was some manner of rouse the youngling perhaps had fallen to deeply into the role. The alternative that she had truly turned coat sat unwell with him as a possibly but not entirely dismissed.

One way or another this would end Raakuzedu’lon’ros would stomach the lesser-chromatic's presence no longer. The one named Eska would have to decide her allegiance. He roars and charges into the fray.

Eska-Brax-Raakuze seem deadlocked for a frozen moment in time...

The dragon-man stares on as Eska and Brax fake a fight. Brax purposely whiffs with his axe, and Eska mock stabs at the dwarf's face. Eventually, Raakuze rushes into the fray, and the three exchange nonlethal blows, blades clanging off Raakuze's armor, Brax's wiry beard trimmed by near hits, yet not a single drop of blood is drawn.

Navarre and Arianna are at least able to drag the kids and parents back past the guards and further into the keep while the bloodthirsty half-dragon is distracted.

"Indeed, you do mock me!" The man-dragon scoffs. "A pitiful display. If you really are the most powerful warrior in Greenest, it would be as if I were fighting a kobold." He turns back now, and begins stalking off, away from the keep, calling back over his shoulder. "Weaklings, we will meet again. Let us hope you can actually put up a fight next time, when I will not be so generous with your lives!"
