Let me know if anything is unclear.

** spoiler omitted **...

If you want to keep that part of the backstory, just change it slightly so that it was a Riot Crew benefactor rather than the team itself. Perhaps the Society of Gilded Oak, considering they are in the business of training young spell casters already.

Beyond that, my issues are mostly cosmetic.I can tell that the numbered fluff and backstory points were meant to fulfill the three hooks requirement, but it would be easier to see if you just separated the fluff and backstory into separate categories. The hooks don't need to be particularly long or complicated, just specific facts that connect your character to the universe: look at JonGarret or Ever_Anon's posts to see what I mean.

The other part is that because you chose a third party class, I'm not immediately sure what your character can do without having to look into it. It would be very helpful if you put in a few descriptions of your class features.

Finally, one minor detail, in your character build you didn't actually buy any ammo for your revolver.

Her first name is actually Mei Yu (which means "fine jade"). Huang is her family name (chosen because its common in Guangdong province, by the way).

Other than those small issues, I really like your character!

Ok! What about... she was hired (by some desperate mother with a missing son) to investigate something, but it turned out that something was a holding of one of these organizations in Portland, and she was caught using magic to get in?

Sure, I'll make another spoiler with the hooks spelled out specifically:

Hooks:
1. She was created by a fey creature for a reason, and perhaps that fey will come looking for her someday...

2. Her mother greatly disapproves of her life, but Mei Yu still cares deeply for her. Perhaps something could use the mother as a bargaining chip.

3. Mei Yu doesn't really understand her powers, and she can barely control them. Someone with expertise who offered to train her would immediately gain her interest and possibly her loyalty.

Actually, she doesn't need ammunition for her revolver. She can create it directly using animus while in combat, but I also didn't necessarily buy everything I would want to be using, mainly because most of the "random modern gear" doesn't really exist in the Pathfinder rules.

As far as what she can do...

Well, as a mystic, she's a maneuver-using martial class. Her maneuvers are supernatural in nature, and allow her to: give herself elemental resistances, extra attacks, bonuses to saves, bonuses to ranged damage, and copy enemies' attack rolls. Her stance (always active) allows her to choose one of four defensive buffs depending on her active element.

She has spell resistance, she can unbreak guns using animus, and mostly other than that she's skills.

I plan to take a level of malefex next and give her decent melee ability and a couple of minor hexes.

Ah, I probably should have realized on the name, but I wasn't sure. This is much better! Both the character backstory and build are a lot more clear to me now.

Before anyone else posts their character’s backstories, I want to clear up a misconception about the Riot Crew, and the magical world of this setting.

I think Alex should be fine? I had her in Portland specifically looking for magical shenanigans, so she could have found and joined the Riot Crew whether they were well-known or not.

It might be a little more strange that there was enough supernatural stuff happening in her home town to justify a family of self-appointed guardians. My reasoning there is that it's a small town in a poor area known for mistrusting all forms of outside authority. That could easily attract people wanting to experiment without interference from one of the organizations you mentioned (and/or their local equivalents).

If there is anything you think needs to be tweaked or changed, just let me know.

I think Carnival is OK too. He's well aware that he could take better paying jobs, but he doesn't care about money. He'll just spend the weapons on allowance on fancy suits and pizza.

Hello all.

I just saw this campaign page and thought this would be the perfect setting for a vigilante, which I've been wanting to do for a while. Still working on background, just thought I would let you know I was working on it. What is the deadline for a final submission?

Meh I just got news that I'll have to move out of town for work for the three months starting in May, paizo messageboards are blocked on the company laptop and anyway I expect 3 months of crunch time.

So I probably have to opt out :( A shame as I really like the idea of this campaign.

I’m thinking Sunday of this week. That way I’ll have time to go over everyone’s entry.

This is Ithe reporting in with…

Julian Jacobs (Stats in character profile)

Background:
Julian was born to loving parents in Portland, but his father died before Julian remembers. Julian’s mother has to work long hours as a waitress so she wasn’t able to be home much with Julian especially as he got to be older. When Julian was 13, he had an episode at school. He was walking to class and all of a sudden it was as though his hearing doubled and he couldn’t take it. He collapsed with a blinding headache but no one could figure out what the problem was. Eventually, it went away and he moved on. But every once in a while, he would have the same issue and it took longer and longer to recover, but eventually, he realized that it didn’t hurt as much, he was getting used to the enhanced hearing. Slowly, he realized that he had other abilities as well. When he realized he could sometimes smell particularly well, he started to experiment. He could grow skin flaps under his arms and jump down extremely long distances without hurting himself and he could even grow fangs. These abilities amazed him, but he was scared to let anyone know, even his mother.

Julian was always a likable guy. The kind of person who got along with everyone. In school he was popular and charismatic but he was never very close to anyone, his fear was always that he would accidentally let someone in on his secret.

Eventually, he discovered that he could completely turn himself into a bat. He was jubilant at the discovery and soared across the sky, but he saw something that shocked him. He witnessed a mugging, and he had no idea what to do. He was scared to intervene and it was over so fast. But he could follow the perpetrators. He watched them and found out where they were staying. An anonymous call to the police ended with them locked up and Julian knew that he had a gift that needed to be used. He trained himself and continued to watch. Many calls were made to the police.

One evening, while he was patrolling, he spotted a group that seemed suspicious. They went to a building that he had thought was abandoned and broke in firing weapons. Terrified, he watched and was shocked when, a huge ugly troll emerged from a back room and attacked the people. The battle was brutal but the mysterious group prevailed and Julian’s interest was piqued. He followed them to their base and approached them after a week of monitoring, offering his services.

The Riot Crew accepted him in, giving him training with weapons and helping him to hone his innate racial magic.

Julian is now 21, and he still lives with his mom. He works by day at the library and works for The Riot Crew in the evening when he is needed. He is personable to all who allow him to be and loves the good that they provide to the community.

Role:
Julian provides surveillance and scouts for the team. He can provide some combat utility and neutralize individual threats sometimes but the others appreciate him for the intel he gives them about layouts of buildings and the like. He always works under disguise, not to confuse his teammates, who know his identity, but to safeguard himself and his mother from reprisal. Build in link under alias background.

Hooks:
1. Julian knows nothing about his werebat heritage. Is his mother a werebat? Was his father?

2. Julian would do anything for his mother, even betray The Riot Crew if that’s what it took

3. He would also do anything to keep his identity safe and private from the larger community

Still working on equipment.

Hey, sorry to say, I won't be able to join this game. Good luck all!

Apologies for the delay! My hooks:

1) Cillian didn't leave Dr Delannoy on the best of terms. The Doctor is a powerful and connected man, who is intensly interested in the returning magical energies of the world. Being ghosted by one of his research subjects is not something he is used to and is not something he is happy about.

2) Corporal Crighton was Cillian's best friend in the Foreign Legion. He was killed in the same attack that revealed Cillian's powers. Or was he? I postulate that his (not dead?) body was taken by Dr Delannoy and returned to life through magical or other more unnatural means.

3) Cillian really doesn't like stepping on the little guy. Being a foster kid gives a certain perspective on life and Cillian doesn't buck that trend. He is going to resistant to any mission the requires actions along those lines.

I figure I’ll say it one more time just so everyone knows: today is the last day to submit a character. After midnight tonight, I’m not taking any more submissions.

Background:

Kaleo was born in Hilo, Hawaii, but due to his parent’s work, his family moved to Portland when he was 8. He had a relatively happy childhood, but was rather shy as a child and didn’t make many friends. He loved to learn and to read, but especially loved detective stories, and dreamed of one day becoming a detective. When he attended college he majored in criminal justice, but it was in a chemistry class that he made a life-changing discovery. After simply touching a caffeine-based chemical compound he had created, one with well-documented effects, it suddenly became volatile and reacted. For a few minutes afterward, he found that his senses and intellect were greatly sharpened. He was able to replicate the result, and eventually came to the conclusion that he could infuse his mana, or spiritual life force in the Hawaiian tradition, into certain specific chemicals to produce effects that could truly be only described as magical. He decided to keep quiet about his discoveries, at least until he could present a more scientific explanation for his findings. He also managed to discover several other mixtures, each of which which produced a variety of effects when ingested. One of them allowed him to read any language, and through it he discovered that one of the books tucked into a corner of the university’s library was not merely written in some foreign language, but instead the languages of entire separate planes of existence. It was through this book that he learned about the larger magical world beyond his powers, but it was also how the magical world learned of him. Soon after Kaleo graduated, only a few months into training as a police officer, a wizard with ties to the Riot Crew tracked down the book, as well as Kaleo. Kaleo then realized what exactly he had gotten himself into. The wizard directed him to join the Crew, as they were interested in his unique abilities. Unsure of what else to do, and seeing an opportunity to at least be some kind of detective, Kaleo did so, though he does not exactly know what to expect.

Hooks:

1. Kaleo is new to the Riot Crew, and the magical world in general. He is inexperienced, naive, and far more loyal to his family than the Crew.
2. Kaleo is not the first to discover the practical applications of chemical compounds infused with mana, and hardly the most skilled. Since someone can increase their own many by killing their enemies, this has led many such practitioners to become extremely deadly.
3. Kaleo was not very careful in hiding his earliest experiments, and unbeknownst to him, at least one of his professors put together that he could do things that shouldn’t be possible.

Only just found this, and submission has closed! Ah well.
@TheMightyAtom: if you end up reopening submissions at any point in the future, please drop me a pm.

Alright! The party members have been chosen!

There weren't quite as many submissions as I had expected, and I'm a bit sad about Harakani coming in a tad bit late, but in the end I'm pretty happy with the results.

The party members are:
[list]

  • Aipaca as Cillian "Breach" Gibson
  • JonGarret as Carnival
  • Ever_Anon as Alexandra (Alex) Weir
  • Red Heat as Father Asher Anderson
  • Ithe as Julian Jacobs
  • And Captain collateral damage as Kaleo Green

Expect the starting post to come up sometime between now and Wednesday. Let's have some fun!

  • Ah, unfortunate I didn't get in on this, it sounds like a blast (and as a Portlander, finally a chance to live out my dreams of fighting floor-to-floor in Powells). Feel free to drop me a message as well if recruitment re-opens.
