Prank War Map

You have all been sent missives recently to help take part in the exploration of the pocket dimension contained within the Hao Jin tapestry. Given the nature of the item and the power, you are called to go deep within Absalom's Grand Lodge as you pass many other Pathfinders who have been called to do the same.

There is a flurry of activity through the halls as scholars of all sorts bustle through with stacks of esoteric tomes. Even far from the windows of the lodge, the halls contain an unbridled energy of enthusiasm and haste as various folks share bits of knowledge they have discovered.

Jahz passes a Vudrani man, kneeling down to help an older woman pick up a scattered stack of papers. He is apologizing profusely as he helps her retrieve and sort the scattered writings "Yes. Color coded, very good. My apologies again for not noticing you behind that stack of paper. Nothing that can't wait another few minutes here." He assures her as he sorts the paperwork while Jahz scoots past him.

"Yes you are almost there, straight ahead then first right." He calls in his ever helpful tone.

So much haste here. Everyone would do well to take a breath and calm themselves.

Pattering down the hallway and dodging under and around the many bustling, busy people comes a sprightly looking bright peach female gnome with straight, close-cropped flaming orange hair and pale green eyes. "Whoop! 'Scuse me! Tiny gnome, coming through! Pardon me. I just need to--oops! 'Scuse me! Just gotta--ack!" It is difficult to tell how much of her chatter is a personal trait, and how much is simply to alert the taller folks coursing through this space to her presence so she isn't trampled under their feet.

She finally makes it up to a man (D. Kembe) who is helping a woman pick up papers, stopping there as if resting in the lee of a boulder in a rushing river.

"Hi! Gosh, I'm almost there. I'm headed to that room just ahead, on the right. But, hey, do you need any help? I've got a few minutes before I have to be there." Her speech is uttered with rapid fire quality and cheery good nature as she crouches to nab a few sheets just before they would have been trampled by passersby.

Now anyone can tell: she's a chatterer.

A rather large female half-elf wearing leather lamellar armor pauses in the hallway near the gaggle of folks cleaning up the spilled papers. With a small wink at the gnome, she suddenly stops slouching, rising herself to her full imposing height. Her mere physical presence creates large eddy in the flow of traffic in the hallway, which passes around the cleanup crew. Once they're finished, she offers each of the folks on the floor a hand up. It's a bit of shock when they discover that her arm is a metal prosthetic.

With a nod, she says, "I'm Mera. Nice to meet you."

Once the papers have been secured Kembe stands up with a smile, waving goodbye to the nameless, faceless scholar who trundles away once more, bumping into more innocents on her journal to the copy machine.

With large calloused hands he speaks slowly and deeply to the others who have gathered around to assist in his quest "Greetings to you both. I am Kembe, and I too have a meeting with the Society. Let us continue to our destination before block the entire hallway." Its becoming clear that between he and Mera a significant portion of the hall is being impeded.

As Kembe leads the way you notice he wears no armor and carries few weapons. A simple faded backpack slung over one shoulder carries his belongings.

A little gnome with a youthful face and starkly white hair approaches the group as the tall dark man addresses them.

As he scans the already present members you note that his demeanor is very peaceful and still, devoid of much expression. While he doesn't smile as he speaks he does tend to put others at ease (at least outside of certain situations...)

Greetings! I am Arin. Where do I go to respond to a summons about a mission related to the Hao Jin tapestry?

He looks around at the chaos in the bustling room.

They sure... summoned a lot of agents here. Is everybody here for this same reason or is there just that much going on at the grand lodge?

A new mission, a new group of team members. A new group to acclimate to my... curse and my tendencies. On the other hand, one more opportunity to query the gods and determine their purpose for me...it always seems to remain at a comfortable distance though. Sigh.

Recognition, at least of some sort, flashes across Pai's face as she spots the white-haired gnome. Is he a bleachling? If he is, how did he survive? ...Could my mother have...? She loses herself to introspection for a few moments before shaking herself, putting on a cheery expression, and greeting the newcomers. "Hi! I'm Pai! Looks like we're all here for the same thing. I think there's a bunch of stuff about a tapestry going on right now, so that's why there are so many people here. I heard someone mentioning something about it at the tavern last night. Nothing specific. Just that they've got a bunch of missions starting that have to do with it, that's all."

"Ah. Apologies for getting in your way." Stopping just short of a headlong crash into Mera is a youthful halfling barreling down the halls carrying a single tome in her arms. As she stammers through more apologies her face turns a flush red of embarrassment as she tries to offer a distraction from her reckless rush. "If you are Pathfinders reporting for a summons then you should head to the former master Aram Zey. Please, let me lead you. He will be livid to know that any of us slowed your entry."

She weaves her way through the crowd tagging a few of the other nameless passerby with the tome as she tries to clear a path while both leading the party and offering her own insight. "He is currently guiding various researchers, like myself, in studying the Hao Jin tapestry. I couldn't believe my own eyes when I saw I was brought in, it looked like an ancient relic worthy of a space within a museum or a noble collection, but I wouldn't have even thought to throw out the conjecture that it would be a gateway to another dimension of Hao Jin's creation!"

"She was a powerful weaver of the magical arts and stored so many relics to require a whole land to hold them in. And not small things too! Buildings, battlefield, and ruins of ancient civilizations! There was so much the we have been tasked to help catalog and research the various tantalizing bits in there." She slows a bit as she dreamily relates the profits of the research she has poured through, but stops as she somberly returns to the reality that she shares with you all.

"With all the dangers swirling about in her realm the less combat tested, like myself, are in far too much danger to explore when even the slightest dangers would send us running. I'm glad you are here though. I've been estastic to see some bits of the reports other Pathfinders have given and I'm looking forward to see what you find as well."

She leads you deeper into the depths and corridors eventually leading to a massive room with the Pathfinder Society's former Master of Spells, Aram Zey, as he gestures at a tapestry hanging on the wall. He is surrounded by ladders and scaffolds filled with scholars and diviners who scurry across the framework, each of them analyzing the tapestry's abstract patterns and comparing insights.

"Stupid, stupid, stupid. What would Lady Lila think?

"Actually, she'd probably be laughing out loud..." she mutters to herself before finally having the good sense to keep quiet.

Mera quickly draws Zey attention and as she raises her voice over the crowd he snaps his fingers to demand silence from the rest of the room as all discussion in the room halts for Zey to hear Mera.

He doesn't hestitate to take over the conversation as Mera trails off,
"That will be unnecessary. There are others who would be far more appropriate to be tasked with cleaning."

"The aasimar nation of Tianjing contains a handful of temples to Korada, Empyreal Lord of forgiveness and foresight. The Pathfinder Society is interested in exploring these holy sites, but the aasimar disciples in Tianjing are reluctant to grant the Pathfinder Society full access to their faith’s secrets. Fortunately, the custodian council of Tianjing gifted one such temple to Hao Jin centuries ago. This temple—the Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment—now sits vacant within the museum demiplane of the Hao Jin Tapestry. We need well-trained explorers to survey the isolated and abandoned site."

He gestures to the tapestry without taking his gaze away from the party as he appraises each of you as he continues to describe the mission. "We will transport you to the Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment within the Hao Jin Tapestry and provide you with a small cache of supplies. We need a complete report on the temple with a focus on four key locations. First, locate the temple’s meditation room, find evidence of any meditative techniques described there, and record any effects of performing those techniques. Second, prepare a comprehensive catalog of all works in the temple library. Third, find the temple gardens and draft a detailed plan of the garden’s layout. Finally, enter the temple’s crypt and take rubbings of the carvings on each sarcophagus."

"You will enter the tapestry within the hour. Any questions?" He lowers his arms as he both finishes the briefing and his gaze reduces from the glare as his analysis of each of you ends. He seems satisfied with the group before him although he does keep his yes out for another.

You all might know aspects relating to the topics he discusses here and can make Knowledge (history) and Knowledge (religion) checks.

Knowledge (history) for information on Tianjing and the Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment

DC 15 Knowledge (history):
Tianjing is a nation of aasimars in the Dragon Empires. The empire of Lung Wa protected, rather than conquered, Tianjing, allowing philosophy and arts to flourish in the aasimar nation.

DC 20 Knowledge (history):
Several centuries ago, Hao Jin performed a great service for Tianjing’s custodian council. In gratitude, the council presented the sorceress with a temple of Korada, the Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment, to add to her collection.

DC 25 Knowledge (history):
The temple to Korada was not a difficult gift for the custodian council to provide, as their architects were already designing a new temple to Korada that would replace the Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment anyway.

Knowledge (religion) for information on Korada, Empyreal Lord of forgiveness and foresight

DC 15 Knowledge (religion):
Korada is the Empyreal Lord of foresight, forgiveness, and peace. He is a force of good, dedicated to peace and contemplation. Korada spends his time meditating in the Dream Lotus on the plane of Nirvana, balancing the spheres of existence in his mind and conversing with other enlightened beings.

DC 20 Knowledge (religion):
Devotees of Korada are scholars and mystics who are often contemplative pacifists. Korada’s worshipers meditate by spinning small glass spheres in their palms. Practiced disciples spin three glass spheres in each hand simultaneously while meditating.

DC 25 Knowledge (religion):
The Spiral of Korada is a symbol sacred to the Empyreal Lord. The Spiral of Korada is an outward-sweeping arc balancing three circles. The circles represent reflection on the past, focus on the present, and contemplation of the future. This symbol is often prominently displayed in temples to the Empyreal Lord, and devotees take care to keep the sacred symbol unobstructed.

Kembe mostly stands in silence, a bit blown away with the magnitude of the mission he'd agreed on taking. Another plane? And a demi-plane? Whatever that is. I'm much more at ease walking the earth helping those less fortunate than hoping around in powerful magic such as this...

Mera dutifully pulls out her mostly empty journal and starts writing down notes. As she's writing down the mission objectives, she gets a puzzled look on her face and starts to raise her hand, but then thinks better of it.
She merely asks, "Um, Master Zey. I have a few questions: is the entire semi-plane vacant? If not, how can you be sure a temple that's just been sitting there for centuries is still vacant?"

She then leans close to Pai and says, "Y'know I grew up not too far from Tianjiang...I mean sure there was a whole 'nother kingdom between us, but still, same continent and all...only a few hundred miles away."

Prank War Map

Zey rankles a bit at the pronunciation of "semi-plane" but holds his tongue as he ponders the question. "Over various excursions several tribes have been discovered living within the realm, but the size of the area have limited a full accounting of whatever sort of groups exist. Given the records of her acquisition of the temple we have no evidence that it would have inhabitants aside ancient guardians or traps."

He evaluates the question for a moment more before admitting, "I do suppose given the variety of creatures within the demiplane that some scavengers may have found their way into the structure. You will be the first team to directly investigate the location."

Recalling some tidbits of information she has overheard while hanging about the Lodge, Pai chattily shares what she knows with the group:

"Oooh! I know some stuff about this! Tianjing is a nation of aasimars in the Dragon Empires. The empire of Lung Wa protected Tianjing instead of conquering it, and so the arts and philosophy were able to flourish there. And Korada is the Empyreal Lord of foresight, forgiveness, and, uh, peace? Yeah, peace! He's a force of good, and dedicated to peace and contemplation. Korada spends his time meditating in the Dream Lotus on the plane of Nirvana, balancing the spheres of existence in his mind and conversing with other enlightened beings. Or something like that."

Changing topics swiftly enough to cause conversational whiplash, Pai suddenly blurts: "Oh! Traps! Is anyone here good at disabling traps? I'm not. But if it's a gas trap I could probably help us out with breathing for a few minutes." It is evident that she is inordinately proud of this ability.

Arin listens to all of this information, stoically taking it in.

The question he adds is quite practical in nature (if existential in consequence).

Master Zey, is there any limit to the amount of time one may venture into the Tapestry? Is there any possibility of becoming trapped there? Finally, do magicks continue to work within it?

Prank War Map

"Certain areas may vary as they do here on Golarion, but as of the previous entrances I have made, there is no significant impact on magic of any school. You will be farther out of reach of teleportation magic, but your magic should neither diminish nor improve within the plane."

"I have found no limit to the duration of the transportation the artifact allows. By traveling through the tapestry, you will leave a planar eddy in your wake. It will appear as a ball of a light two feet in diameter. The planar eddy is visible and usable only to the creature who created it. By returning and moving into your individual eddy you will be returned here with any objects you have acquired. It will continue to exist as long as you live so the only limit to this expedition would be due to your supplies."

With that he gestures to a porter who begins gathering bundles and packages that are being set before you. Among them is an ample supply of food, water, ink, charcoal, parchment, rice paper, and measuring twine.

"I expect the full expedition might take several days, depending on the condition of the temple. Take all the time you need."

Once the party is done asking questions the room returns to a level of liveliness as additional supplies are acquired on the behalf of the party.

When ready to proceed Aram Zey escorts each of you onto the scaffold and directs your attention to a specific point on the tapestry. "Place your fingers upon this symbol of three linked circles." In turn you are allowed to place your hand and he utters a command words that causes you to vanish and be whisked away into the plane.

Once you pass inside:
The sudden burst of momentum fades as a whole new world is open to you. In stark comparison to the musty rooms within the Grand Lodge the sky above is bright and the air smells clean and fresh. you are standing atop a forested hill before a large, wide building of burnished white stone. Behind you is your portal out of this plane.

The graceful building has no sharp corners; the white marble walls are carved with soft, round edges. The edifice appears well-scrubbed, but despite this obvious care black flecks of mold cover its surface. A gravel path leads into an airy courtyard and up to a pair of large wooden double doors. The doors are carved with an image of four spheres resting inside an open lotus flower.

He whispers to the others "Tread silently until we can assess the safety in this magical place." He draws out a short, metal rod and looks to those with magical power.

"This places the 'mage armor' spell on the target. Can any of you use it on me? And anyone else in need? It will protect you for an hour."

"Sorry Mr. Zey!!!" a small voice yells, a little too loud and a overly chagrined. The halfing looking backwards at a Venture-Captain who is no longer there is dressed simply but brightly in colorful, sturdy traveling gear. He turns around, bounding on his heel, and introduces himself.

"Sorry about that! I'm Feelo, and I'm always late. I say I won't be, but then I am. But I'm here now!" He turns around to examine the portal that links him back to the Grand Lodge and studies it with interest. "That's pretty cool! Desna's stars, but that's pretty cool."

He takes a moment to quickly run up to everyone for a personal introduction, getting names and shaking hands, then finally gives himself some time to take in where he actually is, allowing some of the majesty to settle over him.

He follows Kembe's lead, asking to have his own wand of the same spell cast on him before proceeding.

He walks several yards down the hill and then looks back up at the forested area that his party emerged from, attempting to commit the path back to their portal to memory.

Just trying to note the way back. But perhaps we won't be going too far, as I take it this is the temple...

Aram Zey's reponse to Feelo is clear and direct, "Do not let your tardiness to continue to impede your task."

As Kembe examines the ground outside the building he finds the trails of several humanoids. Some are the size of humans or elves while a few are from smaller races like halflings or gnomes. There are several sets of prints approaching and leaving the front gate over the last week at least. Any other prints seem to have been faded by wind and rain.

There are no creatures outside not traps outside, but the main entrance is an ornate set of wooden double doors in front of you. There are smaller wooden doors opposite it.

The map for the adventure has been updated. Let me know if you have any trouble with it at all.

How do you want to approach this situation? And who can activate wands of mage armor?

With mage armor my AC is 20 and I'm ok being in the lead. Without it I have the lowest AC here and don't make a great front line character with such a poor AC. Do we want to redefine a marching order at all?

"My exploits in Daggermark are known?" the halfling asks, somewhat surprised. "Wow, someone reads Chronicles, I guess! Good for you!" (I didn't recognize Jahz as a character I've played with, so I had to dig and see that you were the GM of that game. Haha; that was a wild one, and lots of fun!)

So, I creeped on everyone's sheets, and it looks like Jahz has UMD at +6 and Pai at +5. Would you two care to try casting mage armor from our wands? It's a DC 20, and if you roll a natural 1, you can't attempt that wand again for 24 hours, but the other PC would still be able to make an attempt after that.

1d20 ⇒ 12

As Mera inspects the temple she doesn't locate any traps on the path forward and the temple lacks any defensive structures, like arrow slits. The walls are weathered by time it has spent here, but that is the extent of the damage and even that damage seems to be minimal.

Nothing steps in to interfere with the party as Pai and Jahz activates the wands. The area around the party is serene and tranquil. Opening the doors into the build you hear light activity inside. The sounds of people moving and speaking with one another.

At the center of the room is an engraved spiral, battle scuffed, but still clear over the years. The pair of voices approach and are revealed to be a tien woman traveling alongside a halfling man just entering adulthood. They both wear a white tunic with small bells sewn into the hem and sleeves. The woman speaks in casual Tien to the man, while he slowly replies back with a far less trained cadence.

Tien:
She speaks to him of how his prayers have gone as well as how much closer he feels toward harmony now that he has arrived here.

He responds that he still is far off, but he feels that this place will be able to eventually guide him there if he tries hard enough.

She also begins asking of his father's training and if he is doing well following some event before stopping as she takes notice of the party with some suprise.

The woman takes notice of the party's entry and pauses her speech in momentary shock before speaking to the party in the common tongue. "My greetings to you travelers and welcome to our temple. I am Di Duang, a disciple of Korada. Have you traveled far today? Do you need a place to rest or food?"

"I will be preparing our daily meal within the hour if you are able to wait. If you wish you can wait here or, if he is willing, Xifen here would be willing to give you a tour of our temple."

The halfling clasps his hands, missing the tip of one of his middle fingers, and bows down dutifully as he answers "I would be grateful for this opportunity if you allow me. I haven't been able to share this place with anyone new myself as we only have a few travelers every few months."

Just a reminder if anyone forgot, but we revealed the following spoilers about those who typically worship Korada.

Korada K Religion DCs 15 and 20:

Korada is the Empyreal Lord of foresight, forgiveness, and peace. He is a force of good, dedicated to peace and contemplation. Korada spends his time meditating in the Dream Lotus on the plane of Nirvana, balancing the spheres of existence in his mind and conversing with other enlightened beings.

Devotees of Korada are scholars and mystics who are often contemplative pacifists. Korada’s worshipers meditate by spinning small glass spheres in their palms. Practiced disciples spin three glass spheres in each hand simultaneously while meditating.

On the outside, Pai waits patiently and respectfully with a pleasant expression on her face. On the inside, however, she's quite the fidgety chatterbox. What's going on? What language are they speaking? Are they going to translate for us? Why are they missing fingers? Oh! Did they drop their glass balls? But then they wouldn't have shattered until they hit the floor. And you wouldn't lose a digit just cleaning up glass. Something's weird here. Hey, by the way, how come there are people here? (...and so forth.)

At the mention of a tour, she brightens and nods enthusiastically. They'll only show us the benign stuff, but hey, we'll get started on our assignment!
