Alright Drask Umbra is complete. I'm rather proud of the backstory I wrote, and how great it will tie in to the crunch. The shadow is going to be flavored as the spirit of his dead twin brother who sacrificed himself so that Drask could live.

@Phoenix - Yeah we kind of have a lot of the bases covered, assuming that John Gs is able to handle traps. I second John Gs that you should play what you would like to play. I'm sure an oracle or a swashbuckler would both be great. But if you are wanting some ideas from us, I'm thinking that a bard might fit really well. With a party size of 6 inspire courage would be an extremely welcome buff (especially with me being a two-weapon fighter, I can really pour on the inspired damage). It may be good to have someone as a face as well, since the cleric will likely be the closest thing we have to one.

I'm happy to go with the flow anyway and can adjust for other members if needed.

I've to go to work now so I won't get my full build up until tomorrow but the basic build I'm looking at is an Aasimar (Musetouched) Paladin who will be focusing on ranged combat. They will be pretty good at diplomacy too, so can be the face if needed. I'm thinking protector/guardian of a rural community who was chosen by Erastil at birth (hence the Aasimar blood) as a champion. They won't be so much preacher/priest as a holy warrior protecting Erastil's values and followers. They'll take pleasure in the simple things; like other's company, music, a warm fire on a cold night etc.

Happy to take any advice if anyone has any, although that'll probably be more relevant once I post a full build tomorrow.

I thought I was gonna handle traps? No skin off my nose either way...I just need to know what traits to be eyeballing and how to work them into my background.

Sapher would be BAD as a trap disarmer. It is all you, Thron!

I'm sorry, I got the names and associated characters confused. In my most recent post I meant to say Thron, not John Gs. Yes please cover disable device for us :)

”So stereotypical. A half-orc with a pitiful memory...”

;-P

"So stereotypical. An elf with a jaw that breaks after only one punch."

:P

Hehehe, this will be fun.

Haven’t looked at the finer details of the group I’m tagged with, but are there any others of Elven heritage in Group 1? I’m hoping so...lol

Liberty's Edge

I thought I'd go ahead and post the build I'm leaning toward (PatheticWretch, Group 2 here).

I need to do backstory, but the basic idea is that he is a former con-man who became an over-zealous detective/investigator (specializing in investigating magical crimes), who was fired for being over-zealous and decided to try the Pathfinders.

He's a paranoid conspiracy theorist, but he wants to get to the bottom of things.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

I'm leaning toward slayer (vanguard) for my character, who's a former sailor who had his life saved by PFS and devoted his back to it in turn. He's going to be a bit stiff and proper, so should hopefully be fun to play and read.

You must have missed, I plan on doing an Ekujae Elf wizard into magaabyan arcanist prestige class. Lawful or Neutral good, tries to be very friendly and helpful to everyone. Worshipper of Yuelral. Trying to decide on a school - but will likely also do some type of crafting as well.

Nice. I plan on being very close to those of Elven descent. I’m debating how xenophobic I wanna be, but I’m considering primarily speaking in Elven Unless absolutely forced to. Her backstory will have a very profound reason to dislike outsiders.

She will be an elf from Kyonin. She and her fiancé were both part of the Elven vanguard charged with keeping the forests safe from human intrusion. During an encounter with a group of Pitaxian bandits who had gotten lost, her fiancé was killed. She was grief stricken, but since the humans had fled their lands, her unit was ordered to return to their own camp. She refused, turning and hunting them down and slaying them in their camp.

For her insubordination, she was cast out, and is now forced to walk the world surrounded by those she loathes. Humans, Orcs, dwarves, halflings, all of them are the same in her eyes...

As for Veltariel herself, she is a true Elven beauty. A downright stunner. However, those good looks are tempered in a personality that chills most to the bone. With elves, it thaws a bit, but only slightly. She is curt, brash, and to the point.

Collaboration Part:
She will likely be working for you directly, if that’s okay, as a bodyguard, mainly for Elven comradery rather than pay. Her loss has left her cold and bitter, and she finds friends hard to come by, and she doesn’t want to become Forlorn. You may be the only person she has told. I dunno if you will be a member of the Society or not, but if so, I figure she will not outright be a member, but will go along with their missions you are assigned to. How’s that sound to you?

Any other of Group 1 wanna collaborate?

I love snow days! :)

Here is Davor Riverside, my warpriest of Hanspur submission for Group 2.

[Player: GM PDK]

Here's the official picture for Davor - pic also linked under alias

I'm in Group 2. I went with an aasimar (musetouched) human-looking bard (archivist). I DID take cure light wounds for one of her two spells, but she WON'T be a skill monkey--almost all her skill points went into Knowledge skills, all the better to pump up her naturalist bardic performance. So she'll be a weak, fragile support character who'll buff at the start of combat and try to chip in eventually with a crossbow and her +3 Dex.

Did I mention she's a creepy little know-it-all? :)

Alright, so I believe everyone that said they would be interested is here. Here is what I am thinking for the adjusted groups:

Group 1: Thron (Ranged), John G (Front/Skills/Heals), CampinCarl (Front/Skills), Litejedi (Arcane), Tazo (Heals), Phoenix (Fill)

Group 2: Silverstream (Skills), Pathetic Wretch (Arcane), Profession Smith (Skills/Heals?), Burkadiem (Ranged), Motteditor (Front), PDK (Front/Heals?)

I'll give it 12 hours or so for anyone to comment, but assuming this works for everyone I will split the groups out tonight into separate threads. Still plenty of time to work on your characters, but figure that way it will keep things a little less congested.

That works for me!

So, here is my half elf cleric of Calistria, Caroliss Kaddren. It turns out I'm in the same group as our two elves. Caroliss knows little about her Elven heritage, and I think it will be intriguing for her to learn more from two very different perspectives.

Happy to do some tie-ins as desired.

Sapher (and myself as well) likes banter, so as long as Veltariel doesn't stab her for the occasionally ribbing, she can make anything work. Thinking about stabbing her, or threatening to stab her, or dreaming about it, etc.... all that will be perfectly acceptable.

But hopefully the plan and desire is to eventually see us as individuals, and we can come together as a group. At least somewhat.

Two elves, one half elf, one half orc, and one dwarf (With phoenix still in the planning mode). That makes this the most non human party I've ever been in!

Phoenix, as a ginger, I am required by the council of gingerhood to show preference to the fiery red headed swashbuckler, but just for that reason.

That sounds great Velatariel, I think it would be an interesting dynamic. I think he would be a member of the exchange, despite being lawful/neutral good, due to his trait and the fact that he’s somewhat of an outsider to the area, or was. He would stay there likely due to inertia, and also because he believes in open communication, trade, and transfer of people is the best way for society to advance (even if it is slowly), and the society is a good way to facilitate that. It is after all, one of the few truly worldwide organizations. He also is very comfortable in the wilds, for a wizard, and sees a calling to explore. Think like Twoflower that is always excited to meet new people even if they should be dangerous. Which is where you’d go out of your way to point out if for example, a bulette was actually dangerous.

He’d also be interested in documenting every he sees in the “barbaric lands” of the north. My understanding is that the elves and humans of the Mwangi are a little like Wakanda, in that they have very advanced (in this case magically) societies and are guarded to some degree to keep their secrets from being spilled for their own protection and for the protection of the rest of the world. So he’d find many practices quaint and interesting, and would want to take notes and draw pictures.

So he’d be almost a junior ambassador (everyone’s level 1!) who sometimes accidentally comes across as condescending due to the fact that he thinks people to the north are a bit backwards. This would likely have us have something in common, as you’d probably not be too enthusiastic about the non-eves in the area. That said, he obviously respects Old Mage Jatembe, who is a human, as well as the other arcanists of the magaabyan school, as well as any druids, rangers, and paladins of all races a little more than a random person.

He’d likely follow at least some of the code of conduct for a druid, as destroying the natural world for no reason would set him off (though he’s understanding of the need for people to live and build settlements). See the yuelral paladin code for examples of taboos.

@Tazo Yeah, your character sounds interesting! I don’t know how typical my dude would be for an elf but he will certainly have a lot of elven magic prowess.

@all, are there any interesting things people like for wizards? I was looking at the conjuration school, looks to be a lot of good overlap on Yuelral’s blessing.

@Phoenix--Oracle sounds good. I wouldn't worry about too many divine characters. Right now, our party is roughly as follows:

Half Orc Slayer (TWF)
Dwarf Inquisitor (Frontliner)
Elf Ranger (Archer)
Elf Wizard
Half-Elf Cleric

In my mind, what's missing is a party face. (Caroliss is good at Bluff but not Diplomacy.) And Oracle fits that perfectly. And whatever spells you have known on your oracle, Caroliss will just memorize different ones so we remain adaptable.

Liberty's Edge

Group 2:

Goblin Rogue - Silverstream (Skills)
Gnome Illusionist - Pathetic Wretch (Arcane)
Bard - Profession Smith (Skills/Buffs)
Aasimar Paladin - Burkadiem (Ranged/off-healer)
(Race?) Slayer - Motteditor (Front)
Half-Orc Warpriest - PDK (Front/Heals)

Looking pretty well-rounded on Group 2, no? Anything we're missing?

@CampinCarl9127 - Great suggestion, a bard would fit in here nicely! Unfortunately, I'm playing one on here already and I'd rather get a class I'm not playing in currently.

@John Gs - Lol, good to know! :) Also, I definitely can't go human now. No humans allowed!

@Tazo - Ok, sounds good. I'll bring an Aasimar Dual Cursed Oracle for maximum fun!

I love the dual cursed oracle, good choice!

And Litejedi, conjuration is always great. Summoning a critter behind the bad guys is a truly lovely thing.

Looks like things are coming along. Helping my son with a project tonight so I will split the groups into separate threads in the morning.

Sweet: if she's creepy Davor will befriend her... and by level 3, he will kindly ask him to WATERBOARD him every morning before prayers!

Sweet! thanks for running this Dak!

Have a good night Dak.

Think I finished Sapher, seen here

Chose Alluring as a trait, to give her the 'Something' that makes people hesitate in deciding she is just too plain and not worth looking at. And Adoration from the subdomain Love, will help the tank part of her description.

@CampinCarl9127 Very nice background, just remembered I hadn't read it. And you are right, your traits fit perfectly!

Question for Dak: can a composite bow’s strength score be adjusted later, or is it permanently set at what it is originally made at?

Okay...alias has most of my crunch put together there. Still need to do gear, then crunch final numbers for Attack and Armor sections. Full on fluff to follow too.

Ok, Group 1 (Thron, John G, CampinCarl, Litejedi, Tazo, Phoenix) go ahead and report in here: Shattered Star 1 Discussion

Group 2: (Silverstream, Pathetic Wretch, Profession Smith, Burkadiem, Motteditor, PDK) go ahead and report in here: Shattered Star 1 Discussion

I got an initial gameplay post up if you want to dot and delete so the thread shows up under your campaigns but hold off on any actually In Character stuff for now.

@Vel Good question and I'm not sure of a definitive answer. Will have to do some research. However, I am currently leaning toward it being permanently set, but let me do some digging and I'll get back to you on an official ruling.

@Vel I recommend an adaptive bow. It's a flat 1k cost that doesn't scale with other magical enhancements and will also be able to compensate for any buffs/nerfs you experience in combat.

Yeah, that’s a long term goal. But requires someone who can craft items.

I may make myself a Masterwork Composite Longbow with the goal of adding that enchantment asap. Is anyone in the party planning on taking crafting feats? And if so, how often will downtime opportunities present themselves to make crafting viable?

I’m figuring with my Craft Bow skill, it will just be to make my own Arrows long term and my own bow pre-game. As for my Armor skill, it’ll be to make me some boarding for an eventual animal companion.

Speaking of: is the players guide accurate in its suggestion to notntake a companion? Or would a large creature (the 1x2 variety, like most companions) be viable at all?

During each book downtime will be pretty limited, but we could probably make some downtime work between each book. As for animal companions you are in a lot of dungeons and there are a good amount of narrow, bending hallways that will limit maneuverability. Large mounts wouldn't really work, but Large (1x2) animal companions likely wouldn't be as much of an issue.

The Exchange

@Vel: just make a MW Longbow and add the 'adaptable' enchantment for 1,000gp later.

One thing to note concerning crafting/downtime at least for those that are members of the Pathfinders, and possibly for those of you who aren't depending on how things play out, you will start to gain fame and prestige and access to services through the Pathfinders so that may alleviate some needs for crafting. While prestige points generally shouldn't be spent on physical goods, I don't really see an issue hiring someone as a service to enchant something for you for the appropriate prestige cost.

That’s actually my current plan Davor. Except also going Compound for the ability to use while riding if need be.
