"And by what authority do you become the arbiter of who has a right to the artifacts on the past? I take offense at the very idea that you would equate those who work to preserve history to common thieves! We are representatives of the Pathfinder Society. We have taken hundreds, perhaps thousands of relics and preserved them for posterity. If you wish to condemn her for that, then perhaps you should come over here and put the rest of us in chains too!"

Favian stand and holds his arms together as if daring Tchekua to come arrest him.

"Hoa-Jin is a very powerful wizard. I'm sure whatever spells she used to weave her magic together wasn't callus. We aren't comfortable that she used human souls to make the tapestry but we don't want it to further unravel. Like my friend Hassam said the Aspis consortium caused a LOT of damage to it. We wouldn't want her condemned for anything they did. We want to repair any damage and stop it from unraveling any more and causing more damage to the cosmos."

Human souls...By the Gods what's next...she's going to be allied with the Abyss?!?!?

12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

Tchekua blanches, backing down from that line of questioning, but the other two Judges, Zahal in particular, seem unimpressed and quite unamused by Favian's brash display.

Rogar's response was a bit of a non sequitur for the issue of theft, but happens to be such a great response for Zahal's next bit, that I'm just going to engage in some time travel :-)

"Regardless of whether we condemn her for theft," despite lacking human shoulders, Zahal manages a creditable impression of a shrug, "Let us not forget what drew me to these proceedings in the first place: Hao Jin’s interference with the River of Souls. In recent years, her demiplane has captured souls bound for Pharasma’s judgment. And as I need not remind anyone, stealing ouls is, ah...” Zahal leans down, taps her snout, and rumbles the last part of her sentence to convey its severity. “...deeply frowned upon." Then with a smirk, she adds, "Unless this is what defines cosmic law these days?"

Tenth-By-Third begins to protest and Tchekua's feathers are visibly ruffled by Zahal's taunt, but she quickly smooths things over as Rogar begins to speak.

Rogar wrote:

We aren't comfortable that she used human souls to make the tapestry but we don't want it to further unravel. Like my friend Hassam said the Aspis consortium caused a LOT of damage to it. We wouldn't want her condemned for anything they did. We want to repair any damage and stop it from unraveling any more and causing more damage to the cosmos."

Tenth-By-Third makes a chirp of annoyance. "Again, this one and its colleagues will not interfere in Hao Jin's attempts to maintain her tapestry's existence. This trial serves to determine what punishment is appropriate for her misdeeds, not the fate of her tapestry."

Zahal makes a bored gesture and drills down further on Rogar's testimony. "Do you have any more details on the Consortium's abuses? Hao Jin has maintained that she never intended to trap any of the souls within her tapestry. Is there any evidence that this was an external malfunction, and not the result of callousness or reckless incompetence?" Rogar's roll can be used to approximate appropriate arcano-technobabble

Tenth-By Third and Tchekua seem relatively mollified as well, but the prickly orb brings up another line of attack against Hao Jin, and Rogar's testimony.

"Your grasp of the appropriate theory is sound, Master Rogar. But your argument possesses a fatal flaw. Hao Jin is not a wizard, trained to work magic through formulae and practice, she is a sorceress, whose magics cannot be trusted to work as they ought. Mortals on the whole are fallible, naturally erring from cosmic law and planar constants. The accused has a record of specific recklessness, and it is clear that she would revert to such reckless behavior again if permitted the freedom to experiment again. Can even centuries of self-reflection overcome a creature’s base instincts?"

Tchekua objects, pointing out that [b]"The very rise of societies and civilizations is itself proof of mortals' ability to surpass their instinct-driven ancestors..." His arguments grow more and more strident until Zahal steps in to play peacemaker, "Of course societies and individual mortals may evolve, but they do so only by overcoming the staggering inertia of the philosophies that presently govern their lives. I have seen countless souls that never left their chosen rut. What you speak of can exist, Tchekua, but is Hao Jin such a soul?"

"Precisely," rumbles Tennth-By-Third, "What reason do we have to believe that she could ever overcome her innate recklessness?"

"No offense to one so wise as yourself, Tenth-By Third. But isn't this precisely what Abadar hopes to achieve? To overcome out base instincts?" Seren seems completely out of sorts from her normal sloppy self. Her stance is rigid as stone and her hands are clasped together behind her back, while nearly closed eyes flitter about as if seeing something else entirely. There's the faint shimmer of something standing just behind her, arms wrapped around the waif so that its hands can settle on the symbol of Abadar at her belt.

"In my lifetime serving him his goal has always been to help us reach beyond our base nature. To achieve more, create order, and spread civilization. Are we fallible? Of course. We cannot grow if we do not make mistakes, and we make them more often as others might, for we only have so much time to grow. But even beings of the planes make mistakes."

"We met an inevitable during are trip that was violating protocol and behaving irrational because it did not grasp the engram it held. We found a devil breaking protocols without punishment because he sought power and none of Axis had listened to words that he was violating the law. Basing Hao Jin's judgement on the perceived flaws of others is unjust."

"Judge her on her own growth and merits. She has err'ed, but she has also strictly adhered to the will of Axis for centuries to make amends. And even sought council and permission to act to correct the damage to the tapestry for an unwillingness to make a mistake or disappoint this council. But she stands ready to correct past mistakes if given the chance."

The spirit releases its hold on Seren and she promptly wobbles, nearly collapsing into a heap on the floor before she catches herself. She glances around, her face pale. [b]"Wha'?"

Tenth-By-Third projects uneasy looking runes, reacting poorly to the chaotic aura that surrounds Seren, but remains still and does not interrupt, convinced by her borrowed words. Zahal slowly nods, though she too seems distracted by the swirl of souls that surround Seren, while Tchekua appears entirely convinced!

"I believe I have no further questions. What say the other judges?"

Zahal remains pensive, but Tenth-By-Third shows no such compunction. "Even in the event that Hao Jin performed the necessary steps to create her demiplane and fill it for the sake of historic preservation, there remains the fact that she left her charges untended. Thousands of creatures across more than a dozen generations suffered in her absence as she explored the Outer Planes. Were she truly responsible, would she not have guarded and guided these people until such a time as they could chart their own destinies? The fact that she wishes now to correct her error does not erase it!"

"Hao Jin's sentence is not yet fixed in stone. She may be bound to service for a term of years, or perhaps some other punishment will be found more suitable. The question now is to determine her guilt."

Zahal says, "It seems there is really no question. Even her new advocates speak mainly of preserving her work, and ask for mercy for her crimes."

Tenth-By-Third quickly assents, "Mercy is only given to the guilty."

Tchekua makes a token vote against, but seeing he is outnumbered, makes no speech.

"Hao Jin, this tribunal finds you guilty on numerous counts of cosmic misdemeanor, as well as several more serious violations of the souls of sentient beings. In light of your work towards rehabilitation, and the possible need for your expertise in maintaining your demiplane, however, you will merely be sentenced to a term of service, to be split between the aggrieved planes of Axis and the Boneyard. If this is unacceptable to you, imprisonment is still an option."

Disappointment glimmers in Hao Jin's eyes, but she merely says, "I accept the council's judgment"

The tribunal swiftly disperses; once the matter is completed the viewing gallery sees no need to concern themselves with Hao Jin or you any further.

The exception is Eleven-Sun-Truth, who floats up to you all to offer their congratulations. "Thank you Pathfinders. I am certain your opinions and information were invaluable in aiding the tribunal in arriving at the best judgment."

Hao Jin's mouth twists sourly. "I would have preferred a different judgment rather than the 'best' one... Still, you have my thanks for your attempts, such as they were. Well, I suspect that with the additional time to better myself, I might even be able to seek an early reprieve in a decade or so.

The ritual to stabilize my tapestry should be workable my enough sufficiently skilled mages. Your... Master of Spells should be able to manage that much."

Okay, you got the memories and secured the transposition ritual, and though you didn't convince the judges to rule in Hao Jin's favor, you at least didn't alienate anyone in Axis, so you'll be getting the second prestige point!
Chronicles up later today.
