"We should investigate the voice beyond the door. We have a few minutes of invisibility remaining. Someone help Timinic back across the gap."
Janus recovers one of their javelins, lifts Janus Too out of the water, and returns to the passageway where the voice came from.
"The fungi have been destroyed. Will you come out and parley? Allow us to help. This situation must be ended."

There is no response from door.
There are other passages and a set of doors to the south, as well.

![]() |

"Let us try another route. Battering the door down would suggest we do not wish to parley."
Janus moves towards the other doors, checks them over, and if they seem safe tries to open them.
perception vs door: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 11 + 2 = 15

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Even before they get there a doorway opens! Unfortunately it is a pair of doors secreted in the floor beneath Janus squared.
Reflex saves (DC 20).
What are other folks doing?

![]() |

reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
clockwork insight: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Does Ezren or Jurmo have a Feather Fall available?
of course, being invisible might make it hard to target Janus with Feather Fall, but Janus Too is visible.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Janus Won is not really targetable while invisible and so will have to rely on his own reroll to escape the pit.
If no-one comes to his rescue, Janus Too takes: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 6) = 12 falling damage
On further research, neither wizard seems to have that as a prepared spell, and there doesn't seem to be any spell books attached to them for arcane bond to be able to pluck it with so it looks like Too is falling 30 feet.

"Main door it is, then."
Andolyn walks up to the main door and waits for others to give her the okay to open it.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Anyone wanna help the familiar (though unconscious) form of Janus out of the 30' deep pit? That reminds me, stabilization rolls please. Anyone got a rope? Beuller?

![]() |

"Hosser. We have fallen into a pit. We are ending." The voice of the human Janus is clearly not coming from the pit.
"We have enough rope to reach the bottom, but we would prefer to open the door whilst under cover of invisibility rather than fish ourself out of the pit. If you could stabilise us Hosser that would be ideal."
Human Janus moves towards Andolyn.
"When Hosser has stabilised us, if that is possible, then open this door. Let us ensure it is not another trap."
It's not the end of the world if the familiar 'dies', it just comes back the next day.

![]() |

"Who the hell said that?" Hosser hustles over to the pit. "I didn't want to say anything but I used to wrassle fellas like that back in the swamp."
Hosser casts stabilize.
it takes Hosser a round to get to a point where he can cast stabilize, so Janus II should make another stabilize check

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Janus Too stabilizes. Now what?

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Bueller?
Hey, if you kids don't start making a racket back there, I'm gonna turn this adventure around.

Is the voice still calling out?

"Get that door open Andolyn. We must know who sent the doppelganger assassin. The answers are down here."

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Is the voice still calling out?
No.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

"Main door it is, then."
Andolyn walks up to the main door and waits for others to give her the okay to open it.
"Get that door open Andolyn. We must know who sent the doppelganger assassin. The answers are down here."
Andolynbot slams open the door with such force that it nearly rebounds closed again.
A lantern hanging from a hook in the ceiling provides warm light to the large, musty, vaulted chamber beyond. A long table bearing a map of Daggermark stands at the room’s center, surrounded by mucky footprints. Several doors line the walls and stairwell leads upward toward the surface. A pair of ladders outlined in red too lead upward to hatches in the 15' ceiling.
Two hooded men at the table look up from map.

![]() |

Hosser will enter the room, with his handaxe stowed for the moment. His hands are up, though he's still bearing his shield.
"Listen, we're here seekin' answers to the death of a couple friends of ours. We don't want to cause no more trouble than what's already happened. Courts for kings and all that, we just trying to find out what happened. Now I suppose genetlemen like yourself, I don't want to make no assumptions, but I'm guessin' you two the hired help. Ain't no profit to be made tryin' to slit our throats, I tell you that. Why don't we take a deep breath and you tell us about your boss."
diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15
Hosser will take a glance at the map and see if anything is marked, especially maybe the Venture Captain's house.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

![]() |

Whilst Hosser talks, Janus stalks quietly around behind one of the toughs, flail poised to strike if the men should prove hostile.
stealth, invisible, moving: 1d20 + 12 + 20 ⇒ (8) + 12 + 20 = 40 that's a half-speed double move action.

Hosser will take a glance at the map and see if anything is marked, especially maybe the Venture Captain's house.
"Sure, sure." says the other man reasonably. He sets his plate with the crumbs of a sandwich down upon place on the map where the Dryblade House would be. "Why don't you tell us about these 'friends' of yours."

" A dwarf officer in the militia, and an academic type, lived in a mansion with a manservant. Names were Clovesh and Bosk, respectively" Hosser said.

Jurmo tries to feel the power in her Metal Whip, hoping that it will calm her, she tried to have her dancing lights circle her in an ominous way but it just ends up distracting her,

![]() |

Janus makes the man next to him his studied target whilst the others talk (and/or decide to bribe the thugs).

![]() |

"Listen here, rabble. You kill an oathbreaker recently? Yes or no!? Any other answer and I'll consider you guilty."
Andolyn, who never put her sword away, levels it at the head of one of 'em as she talks, shaking it about with great force.

"Ilchok the doppelganger has been ended. It has been ferried to the next world. Tell us why it killed our friends. Now."
The disembodied voice of Janus commands.

Timinic |

" A dwarf officer in the militia, and an academic type, lived in a mansion with a manservant. Names were Clovesh and Bosk, respectively" Hosser said.
"Wait you mean Bosk is dead?!?" shrieks Timinic from the doorway. "You dragged me down here knowing that the Venture-Captain and the sergeant were killed by these assassins!? I thought you wanted to help with my research into the humanoid underdwellers!"

![]() |

"Who, her? Just someone we picked up. We bested her in a riddle game after the mysterious extraplanar ninja cult, who've been stalking us ever since Crystalhue for reasons we've yet to discover, burned down her enchanted turnip farm, and she pledged her hook-hammer to us in return, though of course we just happened to have an even better hook-hammer rattling around in our inventory that none of us could use, so we gave her that straightaway. She did just bear the brunt of an insanity mist trap, we'll get her right as rain as soon as we can find a temple that is sufficiently cheap while still not being the sort whose services would taint our reputation as a party. Such is the life of an adventurer."
Bluffing my f&+*ing head off: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

"Who is your boss? What business did he have with Bosk? Why would a Venture-Captain swear an oath to your benefit? What is your business here? Speak."
Janus, almost but not quite surprised at the creativity of Sirius' story, questions the thugs,

![]() |

"That's a girl under that mustache?!?" says the man at the end of the table in alarm.
"Aye, Gnomes may not be best known as a fearsome warrior-race, but the lustrous sweep of the infamous Gnomish Battle-'Stache, often passed down from generation to generation of ancient and blood-drenched Gnomish families, has been the final sight of countless kobolds and overconfident giants."

Shadowy Thug |

"Who is your boss? What business did he have with Bosk? Why would a Venture-Captain swear an oath to your benefit? What is your business here? Speak."
"We kill people for gold. That's our business." says the man at the head of the table proudly. "And as to why your man made the deal probably because he would have been killed otherwise for nosing around. He promised he wouldn't interfere if we let him off."
