Survivor's Salvation

The PbP Outpost convention is scheduled to begin on March 11, 2019. For now, if you've signed up for this game you can ninja-dot here.

Survivor's Salvation

Zigvigix, leader of the Exo-Guardian faction, has summoned all of you to the warehouse in the Downlow district that serves as the Exo-Guardians' current base of operations. The shirren indicated that they have a personal request of you, but did not provide any more details.

You may introduce your characters approaching or entering the warehouse. I will start the briefing in earnest tomorrow.

If this character played 1-01 The Commencement or 1-04 Cries from the Drift:
You recognize the warehouse as being significantly improved since the events of those scenarios.

A ryphorian of medium-length golden fur bursts into the warehouse breathing heavily as most would running in heavy armor, his rig of warm bronze rings and solar hued force-fields pulsing gently in contrast.

"Sir?! He...*inhale*...here sir! Not late this time and I still got in another game of full-contact blackjack and sure as the sun shines I took their dinner money *inhale* HAHA." he blurts out before looking around at the others and adjusting his spear on his back.

He nods to the others with a bright smile.

"Ah...look at me being an arse and not introducing myself. Altorin Cyrido, centurion of the sun and one of ol' Zigs Exo-Guardians. Pleasure to meet and likely fight beside you." he adds.

The handsome lashunta wearing an impeccably clean and pressed Steward Officer's estex suit checks his watch when Altorin bursts in. “Good to see you again, my friend. You're not late. By civilian standards, “ he finishes with a smile.

Though in the Stewards, if you're not 10 minutes early to the briefing, you're already unforgivably late.

As the others arrive, he makes a point to shake hands or offer the culturally appropriate greeting. “Jaqweh Navar, here on behalf of the Stewards,“ he greets each new teammate.

A Yoski saunters in, clearly not concerned with arrival time at all. He wrinkles his nose a bit and scratches it while looking around the warehouse. "Hey, Ziggy, you really gotta get somebody in here. This hole still looks awful. I mean, deck it out a little, will ya?"

He wanders over to the others and nods. "Hiya, dolls. Name's Itch. What's the game today?" In contrast to Jaqweh's pressed clothing, it looks like Itch might have slept in his. For days. The yoski pulls out a small device and clicks a button. He puts it into his mouth and inhales, taking in a vapor. He exhales some up into the air.

A dwarf joins the others. He's in heavy armor and looks like he feels pretty dangerous despite only having a yo-yo like item tied to his belt as a visible weapon. His right arms looks extremely sickly and pale. One might be concerned it is even dead. He's got scars like someone who has been in too many fights or had too many augmentation operations. He speaks in a heavy barely decipherable dwarven accent.

"Ack, I dinna know wha reason we haf ta be 'ere, but fer sure none e'er call on ol' Garven unless sumthin' needin' a beatin'. So what's tha target, boss?"

Survivor's Salvation

A smell of ozone wafts through the conditioned air of the warehouse. Makeshift offices full of equipment and furniture are in the process of having more permanent walls erected around them. A heavily augmented host shirren is conversing with a vesk when they glance over and notice the new arrivals. The shirren wears a pair of shoulder speakers playing upbeat music that fades in volume as the shirren telepathically greets the new group.

{Welcome! I am Zigvigix, for those who don't already know me. Thank you for answering my request and coming to our headquarters, such as they are. This old warehouse is turning quite nicely into a functional place. I dislike being so brief but an important figure to the Starfinder Society is missing. Hurondo, a shobhad who left us after his rescue from the Scoured Stars, started a center in the Lorespire Complex called the Respite and has disappeared since. The Respite provides treatment and services to other survivors of the Scoured Stars and any who have suffered trauma.}

The volume of the music pumping from the shirren's shoulder speakers further lowers to a barely audible level and the shirren's telepathic voice takes on a wistful tone, {I have also been to the center, and joining such a close-knit community can be essential to the healing process. Please go to the Respite and talk to Hurondo's partner in operations, Jiwalla Zarvim. She's a ysoki who has many connections and a keen mind. She may have clues as to Hurondo's latest whereabouts.} Zigvigix produces a datapad with a picture of a tall ysoki female in one corner and a map marked with the route from the warehouse to the Respite's location in the Lorespire Complex.

{I thank you for this!} Zigvigix projects telepathically, just as the shoulder speakers begin to blast sugar-pop music again.

You may know about the Respite:

Culture or Diplomacy 10:
The Respite is a center in the Lorespire Complex specializing in providing succor to those who have experienced trauma. A shobhad named Hurondo and a ysoki named Jiwalla Zarvim maintain and run the center, alongside several volunteers. Both are former members of the Exo-Guardians faction.

Culture or Diplomacy 15:
Hurondo often campaigned within the Starfinders to provide mental health services for free or at a reduced cost to fellow Starfinders. Jiwalla is the operational expert in the center. Her shrewdness and connections have allowed the Respite to stretch its resources far and provide most of its services, such as counseling and temporary residence vouchers, at no or low cost to any who come to the center looking for help.

Culture or Diplomacy 20:
Jiwalla's operational expertise allows the center to offer no-cost, temporary housing and food vouchers to those in desperate need. These accommodations are located in the area of Absalom Station known as the Spike. Societal pressure means many of the creatures that receive support from the center feel embarrassed for seeking help, which might make them reluctant to admit they are receiving help to their friends or feel like they should remain in isolation entirely.

You might have heard about the Respite from the infosphere or through professional channels:

Computers or Profession (Psychologist) 10:
An ad that asks the user if they have been feeling anxious or stressed, sleeping too much or too little, eating abnormally large or little amounts, and experiencing feelings of hopelessness directs them to visit the Respite in the Lorespire Complex.

Computers or Profession (Psychologist) 15:
The Respite provides professional services and any possible financial and living aid they can give. Two former Starfinders named Hurondo and Jiwalla operate the center together.

Computers or Profession (Psychologist) 20:
While the Starfinder Society provided both space and financial support to the Respite, it is still underfunded and only manages to stay open and offer services due to Jiwalla's shrewdness and Hurondo's negotiation skills. Recent rumors indicate that a new establishment providing services more successful at helping people recover from trauma than those found at the Respite can be found somewhere in the Spike, though the specific details about the organization remain unclear and are available only to people who are "in the know".

Altorin adds shaking his head as the group gets ready to head out.

Survivor's Salvation

Zigvigix pauses to wave toward one of the Starfinders moving a desk across the warehouse, and you get the impression that they are giving instructions telepathically. They then turn back, looking a little distracted. Zigvigix's mandibles chatter in agitation at Jaqweh's question. {Would you believe some of the workers here complained about hearing their most recent album too many times? To keep up morale I tried switching to something new for a bit. This is a group called Bubbledrop Nexus - not the same, but they're quite good, don't you think? I might add them to my regular listening cycle.} They crank up the volume on the speakers a little more, and you see a lashunta setting up a computer nearby wince and turn away. Luckily Zigvigix's telepathic voice carries clearly over the upbeat tune.

To Itch's inquriy the shirren responds, {Ah, yes, Jiwalla was an Exo-Guardian as well. Members of the Society were sad to lose her talents, but her work with Hurondo is honorable.} Zigvigix pauses to think for a moment. {Before he stopped responding to my communications, Hurondo had mentioned that some of the Respite's regulars have suddenly stopped visiting the center. I don't know if it's related, but maybe Jiwalla would know. I'm afraid that's all I can think of. Is there anything else you need before you go?} Zigvigix glances back over the bustle of the room.

Do you have any more questions before you go? You should make your final choices for boon slots at this time; please list what they are in the discussion thread.

An old halfling with a heavily wrinkled face, sparkling brown eyes and a wide smile enters the room. Her hair is gray, wavy, and pulled back neatly. She wears comfortable, well-tailored clothes, with long sleeves and a high neckline, cut in classic styles. At the hollow of her throat is pinned an elaborate brooch. Earrings jingle in her ears, rings adorn her fingers, and bracelets line her wrists — some of which look like they were made by a child. Her feet are bare and hairy. Her hands are bony and slender, with clean cut, practical nails. She doesn’t bear and tattoos, augmentations, or other bodily enhancements. She doesn’t even appear to wear makeup or dye her hair. Over her shoulder is a laser rifle, and on her hip is a large knife.

She wanders over to a stool in the corner, slow and leisurely. Her knees and ankles creak as she walks. She sits down on the stool and let's out a groan.

"Oh, it's good to get some weight off these old bones!" she remarks conversationally. "Hello, Ziggy, dear. So nice to see you, again. I'm not as nimble as I used to be, but I'm happy to be back in the field."

She smiles at the group. "Oh my! And look at all of you. Come a long way, haven't you." She looks a little nostalgic, as if she somehow has known you for a while. "My names Eralyn. It's a pleasure to finally meet you in person."

Turning her attention to the meeting at hand, Eralyn listens closely.

The tapping of his right index finger on the back of his left hand in rhythm with the music blaring from the Captain is the only indication that the lashunta is actually enjoying the music. Switching to telepathy to ensure that he's heard, he comments, {They're good, sir. Not my regular fare, and I might rcommend mixing it up a bit. Perhaps check out a group called f(Molasses). Their lyrics are a little bit "darker" though.}

{But back on topic, sir, you haven't heard of any other groups offering similar services, have you? The Stewards picked up a rumor of a secretive, perhaps underground, establishment competing for clients with the Respite.}

Then to his teammates, he vocalizes, “Either way, sounds like our first stop is the Spike. Whenever everyone's ready,“ he finishes with a pleasant smile at Eralyn.

Survivor's Salvation

{Vendettas? Criminal ties? Oh no, nothing like that.} Zigvigix waves one arm, dismissing the idea. {I'm sure those two are entirely above-board. As for other competing groups... I haven't heard those rumors myself, so I can't say. It wouldn't surprise me though. The need is great, after all, and there's only so much one organization can do.}

The shirren diligently makes a note of Jaqweh's band recommendation, though they seem skeptical at hearing the lyrics described as dark. They nod to Eralyn and the others. {If there's nothing else, I should get back to work. Thank you for taking on my request. It means a great deal to me.} With those heartfelt words, Zigvigix goes back to overseeing the work on the warehouse.

You can still get in questions if you have something else to say, but I'll go ahead and move to your destination.

It only takes a short time to reach the Lorespire Complex, and the map directs you to an area known as the Healing Arches, beyond the campus’s main entrance. Two magnificent arches of green-hued steel intertwined with silver span the hallway. Many creatures of varying species have gathered here. Most of them are humanoid beings that lean against walls or slump in the worn-but-comfortable office chairs and reception sofas immediately preceding the arches. Some of these creatures talk to each other, while others have gathered around a pair of vesk who are talking loudly. One vesk speaks with a tinge of hysteria in their voice while the other tries to sound calming. A small building on the other side of the arches has a sign across the door saying ‘Respite’.

There are a few things you can do here. You can act individually or as a group, but I will resolve the actions one by one.

* Talk to some of the visitors (humans and a ryphorian) who are leaning against the walls
* Approach a ysoki who is slumped on a sofa next to the arch
* Go to the two vesk at the center of the gathering crowd
* Try to eavesdrop on or talk to a small group of two androids, a half-elf, and a strix, who are standing separated from the others
* Pass through the area and directly enter the Respite itself

Although unmistakable as a Steward, Jaqweh doesn't want to alarm anyone into thinking that "the Law" is here. Wearing a look of genuine concern for the vesk's obvious hysteria, he approaches the gathering crowd. As he does so, he asks the calm one telepathically and in vesk, {Hello, is there anything I can do to help?}

As Jaqweh approaches, he hears the loud one, a male vesk, crying, "But Svata! Look, everyone's staring at me! It's no different from everywhere else. I haven't slept in days, and I don't know how much more of this I can take." He lets out a sound halfway between a growl and a sob. The other vesk, a female apparently called Svata, gingerly replies, "That's why we're here, Razda. They can help you, if you'll let them." There are some murmurs from the small crowd, but words are impossible to make out.

When she hears Jaqweh's telepathic voice, she looks around, wondering who addressed her. She makes eye contact with the lashunta and replies to him, "I'm trying to convince my friend that he should get help at the Respite, but he's-" The other vesk throws up one hand and shouts at her, "Don't tell them! Why would you go talking about me to strangers?!" He doesn't appear to be calming down at all.

Jaqweh feels confident that she is genuinely worried about the other vesk but is not sure how to handle this situation.

Sensing Razda's sensitivity to the growing public spectacle, Jaqweh addresses him & Svata together telepathically and in vesk. {My friend, no one else need hear this. I was at the Scoured Stars, too. If you're concerned about "everyone staring at you," let's go inside away from these others. Please.}

To the crowd, he says in his best command voice, "Folks, please give our fellow some space. Nothing to see here. Move along. Please." Though the way he says 'please' to the crowd makes it clear it's not a request.

The onlookers start to disperse, most of them looking a little abashed. Razda focuses his gaze on Jaqweh. His tail droops and his riled-up demeanor starts to deflate. "You... you were there? Really? You're right, I should go inside. Away from all this." He repeats the words a few more times under his breath, and does not resist when Svata gently takes his arm and guides him toward the Respite. She throws Jaqweh a grateful look and says, "I'll take him from here. Please wait, and I'll be back in a moment to thank you properly."

The two of them disappear into the building, and Svata re-emerges a minute later. She approaches Jaqweh and thanks him with tears in her eyes. "This will be a real turning point for him, I know it. My name is Svata. We came from the Spike, where there's a new clinic that said they have a perfect success rate treating patients who have experienced trauma. But we couldn't find it, and it was all I could do to get him to come this far to try again. This means a lot." She takes out a flat metallic plate and presses it into Jaqweh's hands. "Here, take this. I took it from Razda when I found him distraught. I was afraid of what he might do with it. I'd rather you have it now."

It's a red star solar brand, an advanced melee weapon.

Neither of them are rude, but they look like they would rather go back to their interrupted conversation, and will do so as soon as Garven steps away.

***

Garven examines the ysoki, who continues to act in a slow and confused manner. While asking about symptoms, he finds out that the ysoki's name is Scratch, but he has lost a significant part of his memories. Garven diagnoses that while there is no affliction active in his body right now, he must have recently had some outside influence take over his consciousness and is suffering from the aftermath of separation with it. "I thought they could help me, maybe," Scratch mumbles. You assume this is why he has come to the Respite.

***

Faria doesn't notice any threats, nor is there any sign of Sarenrae obviously displayed. Now that the brewing conflict between the two vesk has been resolved, peace reigns over the plaza.

***

You can continue to engage with people, or go into the Respite, as you see fit.

Seeing the look the woman gave Altorin and Garvin, Jaqweh decides to see if he can get anything from the androids and their associates.

"Excuse me, friends," he begins with a genuine and friendly smile even though he suspects it's lost on the androids. "Have you been coming to the Respite long?"

After Jaqweh gives Garven the solar brand, the dwarf straps it to his left hand. He draws it to see what he looks like as the plasma blade extends from the back of his hand. "Well bless me bottom! Tis like me other, but a wee bit hotter!"

Garven draws his weapon on the other arm, a heavy bone blade extruding from his sickly looking, apparently undead wrist. He grins as he holds his two arms before him comparing the weapons. "Now I just need somethin' ta hit wit these! But first we needs see ta' the docs!"

Garven is ready to go in to the Respite when everyone else is done.

Survivor's Salvation

The two androids take to Jaqweh's friendly manner, and quickly answer his questions. "I am new here, but he has been coming for some time, I understand," one announces, pointing its thumb at the strix, who tilts his head in a bird-like fashion and leans in, interested in the conversation.

None of them have heard about the other facility from the rumors, nor do they seem to be aware that Hurondo is missing. But the strix does smile and open up when asked about Jiwalla. "She's a good one. As ex-military myself, I know it when I see it. She's still as efficient as any soldier, and likes to be treated as such." He clearly means this as a compliment.

This insight into Jiwalla's character gives you all a +2 circumstance bonus to Diplomacy checks with her for the rest of the scenario.

The ryphorian grins at Eralyn when she walks up to them. He crows triumphantly, "See? Her sons like it! It's not just a show for girls!" The women around him laugh, as if this was a topic they had just been joking about.

I'll assume you go on to ask about Hurondo and the other topics, now that the ice has been broken.

The ryphorian taps his chin in thought. "I did hear Hurondo say he was going to post some holographic notices about missing persons near the Spike. It seemed strange at the time, but I didn't ask him what it was all about. I think that was the last time I saw him here, a few days ago."

Itch nods to Scratch, thinking the Ysoki looks a bit like his brother. Really? Itch-y and Scratch-y?

Jaqweh thanks the strix and the others for their insight and their service. He steps over to Itch-y and puts a shoulder under Scratch-y's other arm. “Let me help you get him inside. “

He looks back to make sue that the others are following.

Sorry, Itch. It was too easy...

I think we're ready to head inside now.

Survivor's Salvation

Scratch nods his head and leans gratefully on Itch, who he seems to find a little familiar. With Jaqweh's help they stumble over to the building and inside.

Just inside the door a lashunta receptionist mans a welcome desk, and is currently speaking with Razda and Svata. He looks up to see the newcomers, and gestures to a seat against one wall. "Please take a seat, and I will be right with you." Scratch slumps into the chair.

To the left of the entrance, there is a small workout area. It currently contains a kasatha sparring with a gray-furred ysoki matching the picture that Zigvigix offered earlier. Jiwalla howls a squeaky victory cry and performs a maneuver that twists two of the kasatha's arms behind his back. The kasatha yields, and goes off to the side to get a drink of water. Jiwalla looks over at the entrance and, seeing a large crowd of people come in, she drapes a small towel over one shoulder and walks over. "Can I help you?"

Jaqweh helps Itch settle Scratch into a seat and turns toward Jiwalla. As he crosses the room to her, he lightly touches Svata's shoulder and gives the two vesk a nod and pleasant smile.

Addressing Jiwalla with a tradional ysoki greeting, in the ysoki language, he then gets down to business.

“We were asked by Captain Zigvigix to come... check on you and Hurondo. Is there somewhere more private we could speak? “

"Ah, Ziggy sent you. If you insist." She nods briskly to Jaqweh and leads you to a small room adjoining the workout area. "Come this way."

There are enough chairs for everyone to sit down should they choose to, though Jiwalla stays standing and paces back and forth at one end of the room. Once everyone is settled she gets right to business. "I assume you know already who we are. We'd been having a little trouble lately: many of our regular clients stopped visiting the center for treatment. I know Horundo was planning to leave during the last few days to check on a couple of them in person. The housing vouchers we gave them were redeemed for temporary residences in the Spike, so that's where he was going to look."

Itch frowns and sniffs, then rubs his nose. "Do you think one of the clients might have hurt him or otherwise be responsible for his disappearance? Maybe we should check them out?"

Survivor's Salvation

Jiwalla shakes her head uncertainly. "I don't know. I don't want to think that of any of our clients, but it's certainly possible. Hurondo can take care of himself, but for him to be missing this long... If you're going to go looking, take this." She pulls out a credstick and a few moments later has transferred 700 credits to it. She hands it to Itch. "The Society provides us with stipends to use on exemplary agents. I can think of no better use for these funds at this time. You're welcome to look around the Respite while you're here as well. Hurondo's office is just down that hallway. But first..." She grins a big toothy grin. "Would anyone like to compete with me? Physical activity is a necessary part of the mental health services we offer here at the Respite. Some of you look like you could give me a run for my money. Indulge me, while you're here? An active body for a sound mind, you know!"

If anyone wants to compete, you can do weight-lifting, endurance rowing, and sprinting. Any character can attempt any of them or all three, but you must roll individually; you are not allowed to aid another. Here are the rules for each:

Weightlifting:
Perform a Strength check. Whoever has the highest result (including Strength modifier) wins.

Rowing:
You will operate stationary rowing machines set to a high resistance. Attempt three DC 12 Athletics checks. Each time you fail a check, you take a cumulative -3 penalty on subsequent checks. Add the total of the three checks to get your result, and the highest sum wins.

Sprint:
This takes place in the hallway. Make separate Acrobatics and Athletics checks, and add the results together. The character with the highest sum wins the race.

Jaqweh smiles as he rolls his neck and shoulders to limber up. "Annual fitness tests are required by the Stewards, of course, just as they are for any military unit. But do you have somewhere I could change? I don't want to get my uniform sweaty."

He follows her directions and returns shortly in basic fitness clothes borrowed from the kasatha they saw earlier. The shirt doesn't quite fit right owing to the extra arm holes.

I've got to get a set of those reconfigurable clothes. My quartermaster must have forgotten to requisition them for me as I asked him to.

He lines up for the sprint race, and...

Eralyn smiles kindly at Jiwalla. "It's a pleasure to see you, Jiwalla. Ah, perhaps in my younger days I could have taken you on. But these days my old bones aren't good for much more than yoga." She chuckles, then takes a seat to enjoy watching the competition.

Seeing Jaqweh line up to race, Itch decides to show how quick he can be. He definitely lacks in pure strength, but the detective is incredibly shifty.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Athletics: 1d20 ⇒ 15

Survivor's Salvation

Jiwalla eagerly moves to the weights first to take on Garven.

Strength: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

He manages to lift a heavier load than her, and she grudgingly congratulates him. "I won't forget it indeed! I'll have to do some more strength training." Next she sets up some markers for a start and finish line and takes a racing stance to compete with Jaqweh and Itch. The kasatha who was training earlier is pulled in to assist, and in a good-natured fashion he claps all four hands to signal the start of the race.

Athletics: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Sum: 37

She races incredibly nimbly, but Jaqweh had a better start, and Itch scampers past both of them to pull out a victory. Jiwalla walks around the entrance for a few moments with her hands on her waist until she catches her breath, and then she goes to shake Itch's hand. "It was a pleasure racing you! I hate seeing someone's tail ahead that I can't catch, but you did well. I can see they still choose the best as Starfinders."

She looks toward the rowing machines, but nobody steps up to try them out. Jiwalla laughs. "I don't blame you. Those things are tough! Another time, perhaps, when there isn't pressing business to get back to. And on that note, I should return to my own work. Feel free to look around, as I said." She gestures broadly and starts packing away the various pieces of equipment.

***

While the spontaneous athletic competition is wrapping up, Altorin starts moving down the hallway. There are three doorways, the one Jiwalla indicated as Hurondo's office at the end. As he's passing the first door, it opens and several humanoids come out looking relieved and with a spring in their step. Inside the room, a heavily scarred android is picking up chairs and random bits of trash.

The second door remains closed, but the third has an engraved brass nameplate on the door, confirming that this is Hurondo's office. The door is not locked, and Altorin heads in, followed shortly by Eralyn and the others.

Inside, there is a holographic interface that displays a newsfeed from the infosphere, currently playing a short segment describing a number of missing people and instructing viewers to report any sightings of them to the Respite. Other images are also projected holographically onto the wall, the largest of which is a continuous loop of a ribbon cutting ceremony outside the Healing Arches attended by Jiwalla, Zigvigix, First Seeker Luwazi Elsebo, a small group of other high-ranking Starfinders, and a shobhad that must be Hurondo himself.

Perception DC 15:
There are several datapads containing the personal information of various creatures, including photos and addresses associated with temporary residences in the Spike. They match the images being shown on the newsfeed.

Perception DC 20:
There is a sprayflesh hidden inside the desk.
