Season of Ghosts

While Luurg moves to what he hopes is a more favorable position both Tiffany and Sheela begin summoning allies while McKieg and Wadi smear the slippery salve all over their bodies. The dwarf then prepares to use his wand to bless everyone once the summoned allies arrive.

I'll give Adyr a little more time to act if he wishes and then I'll advance the action, most likely tomorrow afternoon/evening.

There isn't much Adyr wants to do other than engage from distance. He will remain next to Wadi and Sheela as they summon creatures to help.

Season of Ghosts

In a bid to head off any potential shenanigans at the pass Luurg finds himself farther ahead than the rest of the group and on the other side of the excavation chamber. The path narrows again into a small passage that curves away out of sight...but his foresight is rewarded as a new challenger comes around the curve! Another skum, but instead of weapons and armor this one wears robes and carries a wand in one hand. Unlike the other skum you've seen this one's limbs are freakishly long, granting him an increased reach.

"You should not have come here! Master Mohl'omog will be freed and we, his faithful servants! You cannot stop it!" Gerlach - for this must be he - croaks as he takes aim at Luurg with the wand in his hand and fires a coruscating ray!

Wand vs. Luurg (Ranged Touch): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

But the ray just misses the half-orc and *zots* against the wall!

Season of Ghosts

Adyr advances towards his other companions, starting up another lecture and boldly proclaiming the lack of fear he holds for gods both old and young. Even if you disagree with the man's personal philosophy it's still quite inspiring.

But.

Perhaps it would be wise to not tempt fate when a god...or even a being that fancies itself a god...is within earshot. From beyond the illusory wall comes a great splashing and flopping sound and then an enormous, three-eyed fish-like creature lurches out into the passageway, four great tentacles flopping and flailing about.

Kn. Dungeoneering (DC 17):

It is, perhaps unsurprisingly, an aboleth!

For every 5 that you exceed the above DC you recall one piece of information from this list.

1=Sheela, 2=Tiffany
1d2 ⇒ 2

As the three great eyes settle on Tiffany - who is visibly casting a spell - it seems to be attempting to bring some manner of power to bear but just what is uncertain; it's almost as though it's purely a mental exercise for the great monstrosity...

McKieg you may keep to your previously-stated intention or you may do something else this round if you wish.

McKieg: 1d20 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 8 + 4 = 30

As Tiffany's summoned croc springs into existence the startled grippli rapidly falls back from the three-eye monstrosity that's suddenly come out to play. Crocodilla zooms through the 3 feet of water thanks to her inherent swim speed, attempting to push past Gerlach and get behind him.

As per the rules here, Crocodilla needs to either make an Acrobatics check or try to Overrun as part of a move or charge since you can't otherwise move through an enemy's square unless said enemy is helpless. For the sake of expediency and avoiding retcons I'm going to assume a croc would attempt an Overrun.

Gerlach isn't stupid; though he'd probably rather not have a big ol' crocodile behind him he'd rather avoid getting bowled over even more. He takes a retaliatory swipe at the croc and then quickly flattens himself against the wall, allowing Crocodilla to zip past him.

Gerlach AoO vs. Crocodilla (Claw): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Though injured, Crocodilla whips around and snaps at the skum's leg but Gerlach quickly yanks it clear.

Not impressed with Gerlach's opening salvo Luurg chows down on a fruit and grows three sizes this day larger than usual, rumbling forward to pin the skum between himself and Crocodilla. McKieg blesses the group with his wand and then lumbers forward towards Mohl'omog, weapon in hand.

Both Tiffany and Wadi target fire spells at the great beast while Sheela's friend Aquas zips up and tries to punch the thing in the face. While the creature somehow manages to avoid getting torched by Tiffany's flaming sphere it does suffer some minor burns from Wadi's immolation attack, though it doesn't catch fire. Sheela herself quickly cloaks herself from sight, not appreciating this thing being so close to her.

Tiffany & McKieg:

The two of you realize, from watching the fiery sphere land atop Mohl'omog, that...he's not actually there. Instead, this is a very clever and powerful illusion of some sort - though it's not real, it still possesses enough substance to be dangerous.

"No, you should give up! Perhaps Master Mohl'omog will be merciful if you do," Gerlach hisses, adopting a defensive position as he attempts to cast a spell...

Season of Ghosts

Alarmed, Adyr attempts to cast a spell to allow him to both attack and safely withdraw from the three-eyed Mohl'omog but can't quit manage it - the thing is just that scary.

Of course then Tiffany and McKieg both call out that the thing is actually an illusion...

...and now that they look more closely, Adyr, Wadi, and Sheela can see it too. This Mohl'omog is most definitely an illusion, but stronger - it's quasi-real and still has the potential to be dangerous. It only looked as though the illusion took damage from Wadi's spell.

How dangerous?

Well...whatever the illusory Mohl'omog was doing seems to come to some sort of completion and Tiffany feels a very strong mental effect attempting to take hold of her.

Tiffany, please make a DC 22 Will; this is both a compulsion and mind-affecting effect for the purposes of any bonuses you might get from traits, etc.

If You Fail...:

You are now dominated as per Dominate Person. An alien presence seeps into your mind and you feel compelled to aid Gerlach by fighting against your friends.

Spellcraft (DC 22):

Now that you've seen the illusion for what it is *and* realized that there are magical effects coming from it, you recognize what you're dealing with - a Project Image spell.

1=Adyr, 2=McKieg, 3=Wadi

The three great eyeballs then roll around and fix themselves on Adyr...

I'm going to have Tiffany resolve the Will save and her actions first before calling for actions from everyone else, for reasons.

Season of Ghosts

At about the time that Wadi realizes that the Mohl'omog illusion is actually a Projected Image, Tiffany suddenly does a heel-turn and whips around to drop her net over McKieg, who happens to be standing right next to her. The net easily drops over the dwarf, soundly entangling him. Somewhere in the back of her mind Tiffany realizes that this isn't right, something's wrong about this entire situation, she has to fight it off!

Tiffany, please make another DC 22 Will with a +2 bonus; if you succeed the effect ends.

Luckily for everyone else - and not so much for Gerlach - Crocodilla remains blissfully unaware of what's happening with her summoner just around the bend and continues try to chomp on the skum's legs. To no effect, as Gerlach is more evasive then you'd think just by looking at him, but at least she's remaining focused on her original target.

Blissfully unaware of the chaos happening back behind him in the tunnel, Luurg continues to focus his attention on Gerlach and tries once more to skewer him with New Spear. This time he succeeds quite handily in spite of the skum's protections, leaving a nasty puncture wound in Gerlach's side! But Luurg does notice that New Spear seems a little less effective against Gerlach than it was against some of the other strange things you've encountered down here.

The Bane property doesn't affect Gerlach in this case.

The still-invisible Sheela moves up to McKieg and attempts to help free him from Tiffany's net; though the pair make a good effort working in tandem it still proves annoyingly difficult to remove. But luckily for McKieg, Tiffany suddenly seems to shake over whatever strange effect she'd been under and now might be able to simply pull the net off of him - or it might be possible to simply Hulk out of the net, whichever seems more expedient.

I'll allow Tiffany to pull the net off McKieg on her next turn since she's still ostensibly holding the rope that it's attached to. Otherwise McKieg can try again with Escape Artist (DC 20) or try to break out with a Strength check (DC 25).

Meanwhile Aquas still tries to punch the Mohl'omog illusion; though he's intelligent enough to realize that something strange is going on he's still not able to pinpoint just what it might be.

Since it was asked in Hangouts earlier, yes, anyone that sees the Mohl'omog illusion for what it is may simply pass through it.

Deciding to heed McKieg's suggestion Wadi takes a deep breath, closes his eyes, and walks through not only the illusory Mohl'omog - though there's a bit of a chill as he does - and the illusory wall that the group had detected earlier. Even though it still looks like the wall is there, behind him, Wadi knows that he can just as easily walk back through it again if he needs to.

But right now he's got bigger fish to fry. As soon as he steps through the wall and opens his eyes he sees, still lying atop the massive bier that Luurg had described earlier, another Mohl'omog! Hoping that this one is the real deal, the sorcerer fires off a fiery ray that strikes the massive monstrosity and leaves a massive burnt patch of skin!

Outside and around the bend in the passageway Gerlach grapples with being caught between a croc and a Luurg-face as he tries once more to cast in a defensive pose but once again fumbles his spell!

Season of Ghosts

I've been rolling the saves vs. illusions for the group (factoring in bonuses such as McKieg's) and everyone is now aware that both the wall and the Mohl'omog out in the passageway are illusions.

GM Stuff:

1d20 + 16 ⇒ (18) + 16 = 34
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18

Following Wadi's lead, Adyr passes through the illusory Mohl'omog and then the illusory wall to see - just as expected - the real deal still lying atop the bier inside his hidden chamber. Though still likely blinded from being attached to his Projected Image, Adyr decides to try and make extra sure by conjuring a burst of glitter atop the beast.

And though Mohl'omog finds himself now covered in sparkly glitter, he manages to resist getting it into any of his three eyes. Somehow.

But on the bright side, whatever he'd been doing earlier seems to have been disrupted by Wadi showing up and blasting him with fire. And now that his true form has been attacked, the three eyes blink and focus in on Wadi as the beast drops all pretense and simply begins lashing out with numerous tentacles!

Not only does the sorcerer receive a rather sound thrashing from all four tentacles, whose reach is unnervingly large, but at their touch he feels his very skin beginning to soften and change...

Wadi, please make a DC 20 Fort save x4 until you either fail one or succeed at them all.

If You Fail...:

Your skin and flesh begins to transform into a clear, slimy membrane! This transformation occurs over the next 1d4 ⇒ 4 rounds. It doesn't hurt but your vitality seems to suffer for it (-4 Con) and you're pretty sure that if you don't keep yourself moist until this can be resolved you'll start to dry out. As soon as the first tentacle slap connects against Wadi's skin he feels himself beginning to change, his skin starting to grow more translucent...but more immediately, this strange effect saps some of his vitality away and leaves him weakened. Now more vulnerable to the remaining tentacles than before, he's swiftly pummeled into unconsciousness and collapses to the ground, bleeding out. But at least he didn't fall further into the water!

Out in the corridor Sheela hustles forward towards the illusory wall and the sounds of battle on the other side but it's slow going thanks to all the water in this section of the underground. Now finally aware that the real threat lies elsewhere, Aquas wills himself to pass through the illusory wall where he can now see what's going on. He swiftly zips up to Mohl'omog and gives him a sound punch on the snoot...or whatever might pass for a snoot.

Meanwhile Crocodilla continues to snap and slap at Gerlach, unable to catch a mouthful of the wily skum, while Tiffany obligingly frees McKieg from the net she'd tossed over him.
