Before proceeding with Ysildaë's help, Toraim waits until his other companions are ready. After all, who knows what lies beyond!

"Leave it to humans to put a sturdy door in a weak frame," the dwarf mumbles to himself.

"Of course we can," Akula said pulling a chisel and a hammer out of her kit.

Akula drives the chisel between the stone wall and the wooden framing. With a few precision hits, the framing gives way. After a few additional hits the lock is freed from the framing and the door swings open. THe interior of this room is clean and smells of yeast and barley. A keg sits tipped upon a stand, the tap already set into the lid. A cabinet stands against the west wall. Inside, the party finds portable brewing kit and a set of tools to craft beverages.

PerceptionDC20:
Inside of the cabinet a false bottom reveals a compartment with six flasks. Two are labeled, Boulderhead Bock. Another pair are labeled, Longbeard Lambic. The final pair of flasks are labeled Coppertoe Stout.

"Clever! There is a hidden nook. Cleansed and lain to rest, we have done our appointed task. We should go report."

When they leave the basement, Ysildaë speaks to Toraim. "These bane-blighted undead are a danger. If possible, we should keep them back from us. Decades ago, I was taught to use a weapon, in the traders' tongue it would be called the petals of Miravynn. It is a long metal rod. Topped with blades in the shape of a jagged flower. I believe I could make use of it in the coming battles. Would you like to work with me and craft in honor of Valthyra?"

Like all dwarves, Toraim loves ale. He smiles when he sees the keg, and cannot but be eager to try the baker's brew.

But he loves smithing more still, and turns to Ysildaë with keen interest, "Like a ranseur? Or a mancatcher? The latter is difficult to use but would definitely be useful... Could you draw what you have in mind?"

@Toraim - Yes, to both. The keg would be a bit heavy but could be carried out with a little teamwork.

Yep

Ysildaë feels a kind of way about profiting from the dead, but the guard captain had told them to claim valuables. She does find something almost unseemly about Toriam's eagerness, but she worries that this is a cultural disconnect and does not want to appear unworldly.

@Toraim - You've pretty much grabbed anything of significant value, other than furniture, clothing and bedding... maybe some other pots and pans in the kitchen area. Although, I don't recall if you grabbed the longsword that was sedged in the floorboards to secure the office door.

With the Happy Giant Bakery secured and looted, the group heads back to the Tired Flame Inn, checking in with the constable. "Very good!" Marcusic nods. "I'm glad that everyone came back alive. We've lost a few people today... not a great start to the retaking of the Point, I'm afraid..." his voice trails off unsure of what to say.

Finally, his thought returns to the group. "Any information or discoveries that you think I should know?"

Toraim nods, approving Ysildaë's request.

"But not everyone was affected by... whatever it was that caused this," Toraim adds. "It seems the baker and his wife were alive when their daughter turned. The mother died at her daughter's hand. The father took his own life. But neither of them returned as walking dead. The mother's soul remained as a haunt, but that could be due to her undying love."

He sighs.

"Perhaps the daughter was affected more quickly? Perhaps the mother and father were somehow guarded from dying and being turned? In any case, this suggests that perhaps there could be survivors."

"We aren't sure if the energies that have caused this epidemic of undead are still present, so be sure to take precautions with our own fallen," Akula suggested.

"It also seems likely all manner of creature, living or not, has come into the land in absense of life. We found at least one giant spider and its children; I cannot imagine they were there before. People ought to be warned that there may be dangers beyond the undead, though I doubt any are more dangerous."

Maria scratches at her chin absentmindedly, planning what she will prepare later; what tools may help rid them of the undead and other threats.

"The Tilted Anvil is an excellent target and one we've identified," Marcusic agrees nodding his head. "The City Command is trying to secure the old jailhouse across the square from where you just were. Once it's secured, along with a few other homes, then I'll have you move into the ol' Anvil. Get some rest and hearty food, and come see me in the 'morrow." The Constable grins at the group and returns to his duties.

Busy day at work for me. I'll post the next day's conversation with Marcusic probably tomorrow morning.

As I understand things, we don't know if the rise of undead caused by the shaping was a one-time event, a new constant thing, or the start of a repeating pattern.

The princess gave the commander a nod and headed out to find a meal.

Bright Tower Maps | Last Haven Table #1 Maps | Last Haven Table #2 Maps

@Akula - I'd phrase it slighly different. You know that the Shaping caused a surge in undead at that specific moment. Many living mortals had their souls literally sucked from their bodies and sent into the void via the tear in the ether within the Bright Tower. You don't know if this caused any reoccurring or ongoing issues.

What else is everyone doing the remainder of the evening and into the night?

"Sell? What about the refugees? Would it not be best to share anything potable with those who distribute food?"

Ysildaë will draw a schematic of the weapon she wants to craft with the Valthyran priests. She also wants to talk to Anarin. Both to tell him about her day (and how strange she finds her new companions) and to ask for more blessed water.

"How are we ever going to pay our way if we give everything away," Toraim mutters to himself.

"If we can't sell it," he speaks up, "then we should drink it ourselves and, as a tribute to Valthyra, share it with the brave warriors who are fighting in the Point. I'll not let another distribute our spoils."

"And we're keeping the flasks," he finishes, almost daring his companions to say otherwise.

"There's no money anymore, Toraim," Akula said gently, knowing that reality might not have sunken in through traditional dwarven sensibilities yet.

There were a lot of small realizations like that which had been shaking her world view since the Shaping. It was amazing how many societal constructions were taken as a given. Their sudden loss was a series of small, jarring revelations.

"Beer isn't exactly useful as a provision to share, so we might as well enjoy it. Comforts are in short supply these days."

Sorry I took a bit. I assume Maria followed everyone else

Maria catches up with the others after looking in her bag, looking to Ysildaë apologetically. She begins to speak in elven, in a voice less shaky and raspy than she normally speaks; proficiently spoken, if formal and measured.

"Apologies, Ysildaë, but if its at all possible for you to find paper elsewhere... my only paper is in my formula book, and it is not something I'd like to deface. It's of a particular quality, and, well... if you can't find other paper, I can certainly give you some, but hopefully we can find paper that isn't so expensive. You're welcome to my ink and pen, of course."

Maria looks to Toraim with a sidewards glance, finding his words distasteful.

"He certainly has a bit of avarice, which is disturbing. I do not understand how one can be so callous in these times. But, I digress; I've been thinking of, after the reclamation or any time I have between, of making things that may aid in either combating the undead or helping the injured and such. I am welcome to any suggestions in that regard. Just know that these things are slow to make at the best of times; perhaps I could set up a workstation in or near this forge place we were discussing."

"I have paper," Akula said, digging through her pack for a moment. She came up with a metal scrollcase full of loose vellum, a metal inkpot with a screw on top, and a metal stylus, all of very fine quality. She passed them all to Ysildae. "These used to encompass the majority of my duties. Doesn't seem like I'll need them much anymore."

"Gold isn't worth anything!" the incredulous dwarf continues muttering to himself, almost scoffing.

"That's what I said," he reminds them, agreeing with Lady Akula. "We'll drink it, and share it, and be merry!"

Then, he waits for Akula to hand over the paper to Ysildaë...

@Toraim - The Laughing Crow Inn (#2) sits three buildings south of the bridge. It was cleared yesterday by the City Command when they established a bulkhead from which to launch the clearing of The Point.

As Toraim begins to speak, he gestures to the southwest towards a two-story building. For the first time, the group notices that the first several buildings there are lit with glowing of fires within. A group of three men and a child carrying torches are entering the larger building. When they open the door the distinct sounds of many voices floods the area.

To the northwest, the bridge is quiet. The makeshift first-aide station is nearly filled. Thomas and the nurses can be seen tending the sick and injured. The area has swelled with bodies strewn on blankets in a mixed pattern making passage to the refugee encampment upon the bridge more difficult. Closer to you, an extensive barricade has been set on the edge of the bridge. Further down the Dragon Road, a series of barricades block the street. Many of the Coity Command can be seen patrolling the streets in and around the barricades.

Female Aasimar (Muse Touched) (Noble Elf) Monk (Scaled Fist) 1/Paladin 1/Samurai (Warrior Poet) 1 l HP: 31/31 l AC: 19/T: 19/FF: 14 l Fort: +6, Ref: +5, W: +2 l Init: +5 l Per: +6 I Sp: 40'

The look of relief that Ysildaë gives Maria when she starts speaking in elven is almost comical. She immediately launches into a long string of liquid elven. Between her voice and the manner in which she speaks everything she says has the meter of some unfamiliar type of poem.

Elven:
"I am as a bear, as a barbarian, in that tongue. First time beyond Ska’édhel, I come. Thank you for freeing my tongue. Now it can dance again."

She gives the investigator a wry and self-deprecating smile and continues.

Elven:
"Would that I have paid better attention to my tutors. Thank you for your offer, but I would in no way wish to diminish you. The princess has made a generous offer. As for the dwarf, loathe I am to speak ill of Valthyra's chosen, yet his understandings of her teachings seem far from my own. She who forges all bonds between people is not best served, I think, by things that divide them. I think your plan wise. It would be nice to have a place together where we can all work. Do you know of any science especially harmful to the dead that live? We should mention this to the man who commands the reclamation. Would the brewing equipment serve you?"

When Akula makes her offer, Ysildaë bows in recognition if her generosity. "To you I give thanks. I once read that beer is drunk where water is bad."

She blushes prettily. "But that was in a book of travels. Far not have I roamed. Few gems I possess of other ways of knowing and doing."

Taking the vellum and quill she presses them against the wall of a nearby building and begins a series of sketches. She draws the metal shaft of the weapon and gives its dimensions. She draws each piercing petal with a diagram of how they attach to the head of the shaft to form the blossom which seems as much as mace head as it does a spear tip. The blossom is held in place by its stamen, which when she diagrams it out is something like a nut and bolt that tops the tip of the shaft.

Toraim studies the drawing for a while, grins happily, and nods as if to say, not a problem. Clearly this is a fellow who loves the forge and is supremely confident in his abilities.

Dwarves!

With that, always lugging the cask of ale, he heads towards the Laughing Crow Inn, his step quickening as if drawn by thirst and hunger. Nearing the door, he stops and asks his companions, to be sure, "Shall we tap the cask?"

Akula tried to hide a giggle when Ysildae bowed so formally over a pen and some paper. Then it occurred to her that making more pens and paper, particularly of the quality she was used to, was going to be awfully difficult anymore. She might have just given away something priceless.

Oh well. Ysildae deserved them. Besides, her blushing was cute. Moments like that were likely to be rare, so she was glad for them at any price.

At the Inn, she could practically feel Toraim's excitement over the beer.

Dwarves!

"You do the honors," Akula smiled at Toraim's question.

I will in future adjust elven speech to the f@!!ing awesome way you just had Ysildaë speak. Hell yeah!

Maria looks happily at Ysildaë , glad that her switch to elven was appreciated.

Elven:
"The knowledges are no issue of time, but the hours limit more than all else; a truth anyone comes to know as it passes through the sky. Given weeks, I might make things which linger in the air and blanket the wounded, and liquid fire to clean the unliving. Waiting for our passage into this hopeful forge, I will bring with me what I am required, but no withholding of equipment will bring benefit; if unneeded, I might find use."

Maria looks at the others, smiling at her companions and the ritual of cask-tapping which was done with rare reverence. Switching back to a common tongue, Maria responds to Ysildaë's comment on her readings.

"On the topic of water and alcohol, while it is true that the processes involved can remove illness of water, no society could live on ale alone; imagine, every soldier a drunkard! There are easier and better ways of cleaning water. Of course, ale is neither hard nor long to make, and that is its strength. It is at the least more interesting than water."

Maria is relaxed; the conversation has allowed her to forget much of the current goings-on and the immediate events before.

"Come! Gather around!" he calls out to young and old and he prepares himself to tap the cask – a rare pleasure and a priviliedge among his people. "In the name of Valthyra, we will share this ale, all of us, to remind us that we are stronger together than apart. Let us honor the old, tell tales of those that were lost, and share our woes. But do not let your tears flow in vain. No! Let your tears temper the steel of your resolve, that we may forge new bonds and reclaim our hearths!"

"And as my people say, never turn down an ale, who knows if it may be your last!"

With that, he taps the cask and quickly serves a first pint, which he hands to Lady Akula!

(With a short prayer for guidance, a diplomacy roll for Toraim's toast above, to champion the Church of Valthyra.)

She lifts her glass. The light of the fire catches in her hair like molten gold.
