"As I said previously - I don't know for certain the stops he made in between that lead him to Perelande, but I know where I left the ship for him in case he returned after I died. We go there in reverse of how I arrived here: Hop a flight from here to Qi, then from Qi to the moon, where the World Portal waits. We take the World Portal back to Perelande and I lead everyone on foot to the island where I last saw the ship."

"Granted, there are any number of things that could go wrong. It was easy for me to stow away on the flights this direction, but I'm practically invisible in every way, when I care to be. But at least there's a plan and a goal in this case. While we're in Qi, we might also look at purchasing or bartering for faster ground transport for the lot of us for when we arrive at our destination. Perelande is large. We can go on foot, but we would be limited by our slowest members. The largest risk is that I do not know whether he returned for the vessel after I was killed and began my journey here. It's just as likely that he did return for it after I departed and has since moved on as it is that he was killed or never returned for it, having found the Ruins that he sought."

As am I. Okay with returning to halfstar, that is.

The short return journey to the coastal village of Halfstar from the Masstriad River crossing, through the Viridian Forest, is relatively uneventful. Once again, the motley collection of travelers hears strange cries arising from the mists of the dense coniferous forest as they pass along the raised pavement of the oddly-constructed Palestrade Road, the unusual thoroughfare which connects the village of Halfstar to the interior of Naverene, and which is constructed of millions or even billions of unusually heavy, rose tinted star-shaped blocks of some variety of granite.

The return to Halfstar's premises is marked by the strange painted wooden totem, an impressive construction several stories in height, which stands on the outskirts of the settlement's small urban center.

The Aeon Priest Brother Ismin is standing on the Palestrade Road as the party enters the center of Halfstar, near the Conjugatorium. He regards the returning group quizzically,

"Already returned, have you? I would be surprised that you even reached the Glade of Silence in that amount of time, much less had an opportunity to explore the Spire."

"Greetings, Ismin! We are going to make the Lattimor more cooperative. We are going to find and return their Night Lady to them. Which has the benefit of easing tensions between you and them. We returned to seek supplies."

Power surged through Oscar's body, in starts and fits, waking up each limb and joint independently. Light streamed through the broken lid of his former prison. With it’s claw still wedged into his neck, his now cooked savior, a twitching crustacean of some kind lay dying. How long had it been? There was salt water in the air. Since when were they going to visit the coast? … Where was he? Who was he? He broke out of the crate and stared up at the sky. It all looked so unfamiliar, so alien.

Looking down at his own limbs, brought no clarity either. While his own body didn’t bring the same discomfort, it also didn’t seem quite as familiar as he’d hoped. His body was made up of segmented stiff limbs broken at the joints, sandstone colored. Natural grooves and whirls followed in line with most of his body. His hands were far smoother with dozens of overlapping parts. Feeling his face, he couldn’t really tell anything special. He was humanoid, eyes, ears mouth, facial features and engravings. All normal.

He was maybe 3 %$#S tall? Was that a glitch? Trying again he estimated himself perhaps at about a meter. Looking around, he caught sight of a mess of loosely organized scrap and parts that seemed to have some activity.

Strolling without fear or hesitation, walked up to and through any activity, trying to understand.

Oscar's initial, halting explorations of his environment are quickly noticed by a small group of humanoids on the shore. They appear to be about half again as tall as Oscar, and organic. The creatures are clad in metallic armor of some sort whose appearance is such that a cursory inspection might cause an observer to mistake their wearers for genuine automatons. The small group points demonstratively at Oscar and emits a high-pitched keening, apparently in response to his appearance.

He approached and leaned in inspecting their equipment and ‘armor’. They might have been shy, but he certainly wasn't. Was their hooting and hollering a proper language? He wasn’t sure, and circled around them, careful not to touch.

Oscar found himself insatiably curious. Why were they here? Were they hunting or scavenging? Where did they come from? Words were slow coming, but he found himself remembering some ”Can you understand me?”
Awaiting for a response, he allowed his fingers to strum invisible strings. A few chords to distract, floated from the thin air.

Perception: 1d20 + 37 ⇒ (1) + 37 = 38
If he manages to say the words out loud, we can say it’s Elvish. Otherwise, it’s just thought.

The strange creatures grow extremely agitated as Oscar approaches. One appears effectively paralyzed with fear, and this individual is the one available for Oscar's inspection.

It continues to shiver perceptibly as Oscar approaches.

The creature's head is covered by a broad helmet of thick metal, the outside of which is embossed with a bewildering variety of tubes, grooves, and other adornments, as well as a plethora of whizzing and wheezing levers, gears, and small pulleys. The operation of this dense encrustation of miscellaneous mechanical paraphernalia is far from obvious - it might be merely an elaborate layer of adornment without any actual function.

Its torso is covered by a barrel like shell of metal whose pristine simplicity could scarcely present a more opposite profile than the creature's helmet festooned with assorted mechanistic perturbations. In general appearance, it resembles something like a beetle or tortoise shell made out of some synthetic alloy.

As Oscar commences his inspection, the creature's fellows quickly disperse further up the shore, and are soon hidden behind a low hillock.

What exactly is the Perception check focused on?

It was mostly just trying to grasp cultural context in the absence of any. I was also trying to figure out if I could intuit where the town was, but that was a long shot.

Fear was no good. He'd have to get them past it. He'd have to move a little slower and find a peace offering of some sort. If he had supplies, he'd offer some. Hunting would be too dangerous, and with his luck, whatever he found would be poisonous.

Sighing, he resigned himself to giving the only thing he had, himself. Bracing himself, for possible attacks, he touched the frightened figure.

A bit of energy passed through with that touch, clearing the mind, and accelerating the limbs.

This should calm him and give him/her a noticeable buff. I still full expect them to attack.

About 30 seconds after the figure disappeared, Oscar climbed the crested hill himself and looked inland. It was a new land with so much to explore!

Looking for any signs of the figures, and notable geographic features

Oscar, upon making the crest of the hill, is now at a perfect vantage to take the entire vista of a small town on the foreign seashore. It is to this settlement that the strange little collection of humanoids he first encountered have all seemingly fled. With a moment's concentration, Oscar can detect the little shapes headed towards the apparent center of the town.

The settlement is evidently organized around a raised central road. This strange causeway slopes down to the water, where it disappears into the ocean, though apparently continuing unabated into the depths. It appears to be composed of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of starfish-shaped blocks of stone the hue of a sunset or lightly-tinctured rose. Of various sizes, between that of a fist and scarcely visible to the naked eye, these architectural units are locked together by their ingenious design, by which they meet, edge to edge, like the individual pieces of some gigantic puzzle. It is raised to a height of almost a full story, and is made up of millions or even billions of rose colored blocks cut into the shape of starfish. These are ingeniously interlinked without any sort of mortar to tie them together. Though the odd construction creates a highly variegated surface, it is apparently steady and just smooth enough to serve the needs of the townsfolk, many of whom are standing on its approaching slopes, or traveling upon its raised surface.

Oscar sees one sixteen legged pack animal of some sort with gray skin and a long, banana-like snout approach what appears to be the center of the town. It carries three travelers on its howdah.

The settlement appears to be constructed predominantly of lacquered wooden buildings. Many sport elaborate carvings. The roofs appear to be mostly made of thatch or slate tile.

In this relatively uniform arrangement, a few of the constructions stand out.

One side of the intersection is dominated by a three story wooden building that is cruciform in shape. A three story tower rises out of its center, where the bars of the crucifix meet.

The building is adorned with elaborate wooden carvings both of geometric properties, as well as apparent imitations of various flora and fauna. The scale-like slate tiles which cover the high-peaked roof are overshadowed by the sun-cast reflections of the many such ornamentations which festoon its buttresses, gables, and other principle architectural features.

Across from this curious building, on the other side of the raised road, is a two story stone building.

Directly across the street from the 'T'-shaped building is a stone structure, likewise with more than one level. It appears to be constructed of millions of rounded stones of various colors that are, like the road, of different sizes but somehow all fitted together ingeniously in a fashion which is difficult to comprehend. Some areas of the building's walls appear to undulate slightly. The roof is made of red metal slats fixed by protruding nails of bronze which seem both larger in dimension, as well as further protruded from the surface they are securing, than architectural necessity would ostensibly require.

The small crowd outside the stone building is a mixture of about two dozen men, women, and children.

In terms of appearance, it is noticeable that most appear to have extremely dark hair, paired with green or purple eyes. This majority of the group also have slightly epicanthic eyes. Their skin is a tan of a slightly caramel shade. A few have dark freckles.

However, a small number have bright blonde or platinum hair with sparkling blue eyes which are so bright that they seem to almost project light from their rounded, non-epicanthic orbits.

The standard dress for the males appears to be a white linen undershirt with decorative ruffles with varying degrees of ornamentation. A few of these garments are further decorated with colored filigree. Each also wears a chasuble of a bright color such as red, purple, or blue which is also decorated to varying degrees. Their feet are fitted with leather boots, many of which are also dyed, that have prominent, curled toes.

The women are dressed in flowing tunics with metallic colors. These are secured with decorative broaches. They wear high, conical hats upon their heads. Many also have their hair gathered in a net or head covering.

Ismin's brows furrow precipitously,

"Did they say what they were doing at the river cross? The Lattimor inhabit a large cave complex below an old fortification that predates the current civilization of the Steadfast known as the Moathouse by the locals."

"It is a cause of some concern, I must tell you, that they would be discovered so far afield from their usual habitation, and apparently engaged in hostile surveillance of a major trade route. We will dispatch a caravan to the capital of Navarene within the week, and now I do not know what we should do."

The center of town it was. Between the individuals of possible import, and destination of his acquaintances, it seemed like it could be interesting. Whatever he was, wherever he came from, however much he wanted to find something familiar, this world didn’t disappoint, far as being just plain interesting. Maybe, he’d put ######### into not being so distracting this time, though.

With a small flourish, he intuitively found himself imagining a set of shirts, and boots, as roughly as he could approximate from a distance, and seeing that same set simulate over his body. As long as he focus, he could keep this up without much effort. Hmm, perhaps a simple cap as well. A small person could be excused, but his facial feature, less so.

Keeping to the same path of his forerunners, he didn’t manage to keep pace. As he approached closer, Oscar marveled at the incomprehensible architecture, and varying features all around him. Perhaps, he'd be overlooked enough to be able to find his place.

The Unfettered Prince had already covered this but Brother Ismin seems to have gotten sidetracked by the knowledge of the Lattimor just on the other side of the river so Kiyoshi reiterates the situation to keep things clear, "The deal we made with the Lattimor is to return to my own home world and retrieve the ship the Cigar Thane used to reach Perelande in the first place. If we can make our way to Qi, then catch a flight to the moon, I will be able to take us to the last known location of the ship, and then, if it's still there, return it to the Lattimor, easing the tensions between them and you, and possibly get their assistance in reaching the Spire. Or if not their assistance, then their neutrality towards that end. Currently they will make every effort to prevent us reaching the Spire on behalf of the Spinner. So the short of it is that we need the easiest way to find a ship to - and a map of - Qi, as well as supplies for a decently long journey away from this planet."

The Aeon Priest Brother Ismin chuckles,

"Well, that sounds like quite a journey!"

He then raises his hands and shrugs his shoulders,

"You mention a ship, but do you mean one that crests the waves or glides upon the air? Actually, it matters not, since I myself have neither an airship or a seaborne vessel of any description in my possession. I and the other members of my order arrived in this isolated locale by ground on the back of a lumbering ishtiqaal."

"But perhaps you will find assistance among one of the travelers currently lodged at the Laughing Gasp Inn, over on the other side of the Parade Procession."

He points at the odd stone structure on the other side of the road, opposite the high, ornamented gables of the Conjugatorium.

Directly across the street is a stone structure, likewise with more than one level.

"Often those that ply the seas take lodging there, as well as merchants and others who might be able to arrange for your transport. Perhaps one could summon an aerial dirigible were they aware of your need."

"As to a map of great Qi, I am sure we must have one in the geographic reading room of the Amber Priory, but it is not currently in my possession."

"Finally, your request for supplies will require some kind of currency or barter. Since you have all appeared, seemingly out of mid air, I question whether you are currently endowed with the requisite pecuniary resources to obtain that goal."

After he finishes addressing Kiyoshi, Brother Ismin turns to Oscar,

"And who exactly might you be, another one of these memory-fled travelers from a previous world?"

The Unfettered Prince looks at the newcomer.

"Greetings! We plan to depart to find a vessel in the hunt for another vessel. You are welcome to join us."

He turns to face Ismin once more.

"Brother, we have a *considerable* quantity of magical and physical might between us. Unique opportunities for those who aid us, as evidenced by the lengths we are going on this quest. Your advice is welcome, though I think barter - or our mere presence on a journey - should be quite sufficient."

"Stranger who calls himself a Prince, having myself witnessed some of the many feats of which your motley collection of amnesiacs is apparently capable, I do not doubt for a moment the first assertion of your reply, that before this humble servant of the Order of Truth stands a company of high and diverse talents."

"However, you would be incorrect to assume that your abilities are unique in this Ninth World, which is filled with a plethora of wonders."

"It remains to be seen whether your particular gifts would be sufficient to compel a traveling merchant to offer you passage aboard his airship."

Yet again, even though his face remains behind his helm, it is obvious from his body language and tone that the Unfettered Prince is smiling broadly.

"I appreciate your candour, Brother! I ask you then. What qualities do such merchants most often seek?"

Now he sounds genuinely curious.

The Aeon Priest assumed a somewhat contemplative expression as he considered the Unfettered Prince's query,

"Well... I suppose it depends in what direction they are traveling, and to what end."

"As you have, during even your short sojourn, probably already concluded, the Ninth World, even the relatively settled holdings of the Steadfast, can be quite dangerous outside of the major population centers, such as your proposed journey's termination in the distant metropolis of Qi."

"Many merchants hire enterprising sell swords to protect them on dangerous journeys, such as expeditions to the isolated claves of the Beyond, the wild region that lies eastward, beyond the forbidding expanse of the Black Riage Mountain Range."

"Others may require assistance in determining the nature of mysterious numenera for various ends -- for instance, to re-purpose for present commerce with as a ware or tool of trade, or even on the basis of a strictly academic interest and appreciation."

As the priest spoke to him, Oscar became suddenly wary of those around him, darting his gaze back and forth. Welcome was rarely sincere. A brief unease washed over him, as he realized he didn't know which pieces of architecture could be hidden passages for attackers, but as he watched, nothing untoward happened. The priest 's assuring demeanor seemed to put his fellow townsmen at ease. It wasn't perfect, but they didn't seem in danger of attacking.

Slowly, the tension eased out of the wooden construct. The abrupt swing of his emotions startled even himself. He would learn more if he gave a bit of trust. He might earn some in return. Slipping his cap off, letting it fade to nothing, he stepping forward and bowed. "Greetings. I'm honored to meet you and your family. Yes, I seem to have lost my way; I'm not the only one? Can you share anything about our path? May I meet the other Lost?"

Can you clarify if this would be mental or verabl

He met the priests gaze, steadily. He wondered if he seemed just as alien to the priest, as the priest in turn was to him. Maybe this world had become such a hodgepodge of mixed cultures that grey eyes with tan irises weren't as uncommon as he might guess.

For now it would be mental, since Oscar doesn't currently know how to speak the language of the natives. One of the others can teach him, since they learned it recently.

In that case, you should head off to the Laughing Gasp Inn, across the street from the Conjugatorium.
