Rolf the Unworthy |
Before unlocking the kobold, Rolf casts a quick detect magic to see if there is a diamond in the rough. After determining if there is anything of true value, he finally reaches down and unlocks the chains, cutting any rope bonds with his shiny mithril knife.
"You can be going first, show us the way. Make sure to be pointing out traps to eif you please. Peerhaps Rolf and Nighttail be good friends someday." The ulfen smiles.
Let's make sure we are healed up. I still have all 3 spells, so I am doing just fine to keep pushing deeper.
Rolf the Unworthy |
"Cheer up Jaeqil! We weill be keeling kobolds again soon!" Rolf says with a smile on his face, completely oblivious to how Nighttail might interpret his joyous attitude.
GM Hawthwile |
Using your Take 10 Spellcraft of 19 to move things along.
Nighttail grins toothily at Rolf as he cuts her ropes. "Oh yes - point out traps and keep you safe! Well, at least for traps I know about. Not been everywhere you see. I can have my stuff back, yes?" She hurries over to a wooden gate on the far side of the tunnel. "Friend in here - we rescue! Then kill Chief Roaghaz!"
What do you do?
Rolf the Unworthy |
"Sure, you can be having of your things back, once you have helped us weith what you promise."
Turning briefly back to the others, Rolf raises an eyebrow and passes along the information about the treasure trove in the bag. Peerhaps we are finding a way to keep theis stuff? he muses to himself, torn about possibly lying, even to the kobold.
Open the spoiler earlier about what Rolf finds. Some good stuff in there...
Primketh Noctua |
Primketh raises a catlike eyebrow as Rolf mentions the wand of cure light wounds. ”That’d be very handy indeed...save me some of my precious spells per day. How do you propose we go about, um, liberating these items without too much fuss?”
Tabin Greenhallow |
"Now, now. I think this kobold has done nothing to earn our distrust, so the least we can do is not earn his. Let's give him back his stuff."
Well, I am still planning on becoming a paladin so...
Rolf the Unworthy |
"You are not necessarily wrong Tabein. But she eis a kobold after all. Notoriously not worth trust."
Rolf stops, dead in his tracks as the full realization of what he has said, coupled with what they are doing, settles in on him. He shrugs his shoulders and pulls out the wand of cure light wounds and taps Tabin on the shoulder twice with it.
CLW: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (4, 5) + 2 = 11
GM Hawthwile |
The wand of cure light wounds now has 15 charges remaining.
"Well, if I don't have stuff I can't go in front. Very easy to hit without armor, not very useful without weapon. You understand." Nighttail nods towards Rolf's unarmored, barely-weaponized form. "And I can't help you if dead. So! I lead from behind, tell you what I know about traps, kobolds, Chief Roaghaz. You give back stuff, maybe I can be more helpful." She shrugs as she pushes open the gate and strides down the tunnel.
After opening the matching gate at the other end of the tunnel, Nighttail surveys the large cave beyond. "Hak!" she yells, "estas aqui, Hak?"
With a cry of delight, a small dinosaur rushes out of a corner of the room, a well-chewed bone still clutched in its mouth. It happily nuzzles Nighttail, who returns the affection by scratching above its eye ridges. "Oh Hak! Estoy muy feliz de verte de nuevo!" Nighttail coos.
What do you do?
GM Hawthwile |
Hak looks curiously at the adventurers as Nighttail easily slings herself up onto his back. "Right, now back to stinky room and then right," the kobold directs from her perch. "It long tunnel that open up to cavern. Watch out that point - trap at chokepoint in room, around corner. Then climb rope down." She waits very obviously for the adventurers to take the lead.
What do you do?
Jaeqil |
Jaeqil rubs his temples in annoyance as he wordlessly turns around and begins going back the other way.
Rolf the Unworthy |
Rolf nods, clearly impressed by the little Kobold's presence. He simultaneously wonders how strong this chief might be to have subdued a kobold with this kind of command over such a creature.
Then again, the fact that she clearly has some power might have been the reason she was tied up in the first place.
Following the directions of the kobold, Rolf travels with the group, keeping his eyes peeled for hazards along the way. As soon as they get close to the ambush point that Nighttail has described, Rolf is studying the walls and other hiding points hard, expecting enemies to jump out as they work on disabling the trap.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
GM Hawthwile |
With Nighttail to help point out the trap, Primketh finds a trip line attached to a series of spring-loaded darts hidden under the straw covering the floor of this cave. Rolf watches carefully, but does not spot an ambush as the catfolk's practiced hands get to work releasing the tension on the tripwire slowly, eventually letting it rest on the floor before detaching one end and coiling the wire around the top of the straw bedding. A sizeable hole leads down into darkness, with a knotted rope hanging over the edge. "Chief Roaghaz further that way," Nighttail says, pointing. "Past food pools."
What do you do?
Rolf the Unworthy |
"Jaeqil, Would you be beeing so kind as to go feirst?" Rolf asks, surprisingly eager to slide down the hole. "Or, eif you want, I could drink theis leetle potion here, deissappear and check out how the land lays." The ulfen wobbles his head back and forth as he presents a couple of options.
I'm happy to go first if I am invisible. Otherwise I am a bit squishy to lead the way down the hole. If we do decide the invisible witch option, I would just like to point out that we try to take as much advantage of that as possible.
Jaeqil |
”Yeah, yeah. Save the magic, I got it.”
Jaeqil sheathes his club and starts climbing down the rope.
GM Hawthwile |
Since Jaeqil doesn't have darkvision, I'm assuming someone cast light on a piece of his equipment so he can see.
As Jaeqil climbs down the rope, he hears a gasp from below him and the pattering of tiny feet on stone. As his feet touch the ground, the ghoran spots a kobold clambering over the fallen stones and rubble that coat the floor of the chamber's other exit and disappearing around the corner. "Listo los pargos!" echoes down the tunnel.

"I am theinking they are waiting for us to fall einto kobold traps. Peerhaps we are needing to draw them in somehow." Rolf purses his lips as he contemplates what to do. Eventually, he pulls an alchemist's fire flask from his pack. He walks ahead a little to prepare to toss it around the corner and quickly retreat behind Jaeqil.
Draw Alchemist's fire, then move up to corner (but stay behind it!) and hope there isn't a trap in that part of the hall... lol. Next turn my plan is to toss the vial then run back behind the front line fighter.
GM Hawthwile |
Around the corner, Rolf spots a rubble-strewn passage that opens up into a larger cavern with a pool of water in the middle. Though he can hear kobolds yapping to each other, none of them are in sight.
"What you wait for?" Nighttail asks as she descends the rope, Hak following with practiced ease. "You want them to sound alarm, bring whole tribe on you at once?"

Jaeqil moves forward, past Rolf, and into the next room.
Where he is currently is only 30’ from where he started; haven’t moved him fully because the map is still partially hidden. If he sees a kobold then he moves toward the closest one, otherwise he’ll move to the nearest passageway.
Rolf the Unworthy |
Rolf grins and leaves his right arm cocked behind him, spinning the dangerous vial in his palm. He follows Jaeqil in, staying behind the warrior and gets ready to chuck the fiery bomb.

The catfolk moves up behind Tabin, touching the archer with a bit of divine guidance. As Jaeqil moves through the rubble-strewn tunnel, he spies a low-ceilinged cavern with a large pool of water in the middle - as well as a trio of kobolds arrayed around the water's edge.
As the ghoran steps out of the tunnel, the kobolds strike! Two of them jab at him with long, hooked polearms...

”What the—?!”
Jaeqil has his feet sweeped out from under him and nearly falls into the pond below! He looks down into the pond with eyes wide.

Primketh doesn't spot anything dangerous about the environment as he surveys the cavern, while Tabin launches two arrows around the corner - the first plinking against the ceiling and falling into the pool, while the second pierces the kobold on the far side of the cavern through the stomach.

Primketh Noctua |
"I don't see any pesky traps about, so that's good. Tabin, you still have some of my magical guidance, correct?" Primketh casts guidance again and holds the charge, ready to use it on Tabin again, or Rolf if he moves back (just don't want to get in Tabin's line of fire).
Rolf the Unworthy |
Rolf snarls as he stands up, mud caked to his robes and hands from the fall. He looks at the same kobold with his blue gaff and narrows his eyes. Suddenly that blue gaff feels a little unsteady in the kobold's hands.

Crit damage: 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
...and the kobold cackles with glee as the ghoran yelps in pain.
The reasoning behind that movement was:
1. Jaeqil moves through Rolf's square - totally legal
2. Kobold trips Jaeqil as he leaves that square - again, totally legal
3. Jaeqil is now prone in the same square as Rolf is prone - now this we cannot have, so Jaeqil must move
4. Edge of the pond is sloped downward, so the most natural course of movement would be into the water
Also, the turtles provoke AoOs from Jaeqil for entering his square. Remember that you are prone and underwater.
Blue Will vs DC 15: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (9) - 1 = 8
The kobold's laughter is cut short by Rolf's stare, and she clutches her polearm fearfully as the witch stands. From the cavern behind him, a pair of arrows fly over the pond and skewer her remaining companion. The remaining kobold whimpers and weakly tries to trip the witch again...

"Get out of there Jaeqil! Those turtles peerhaps are liking plants more than meat!" Rolf calls out, unhelpfully but with worry in his voice.
Rolf reaches back to his backpack and tugs on the slipknot holding his coil of silk rope in place. He takes a careful step backward to get out of the way of Tabin coming into the room, already feeling bad for tripping the Ghoran up.
Rolf tosses the coil of rope down towards the fallen warrior and loops it around a stone he hopes is stuck solid in the floor, and prays to Kurgess he is strong enough to help Jaeqil climb back up.
Up to you GM on how you want that action economy to play out. I figured move action to grab the rope, move/standard to toss it down to Jaeqil, plus a 5' step. Rolf is not strong, but he is hoping to give Jaeqil whatever help he can to get away from the snapping turtles. He figures that Tabin can take care of the last kobold, and is comfortable in his evil eye giving them the edge they need.
Jaeqil |
Jaeqil tumbles down into the water and is accosted by a trio of turtles!
AoO vs Green: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 5 - 2 = 8 I’m assuming that the low ceiling penalty doesn’t apply in the water (the -2 here is from being underwater).

Tabin's arrow skewers the last kobold between the eyes. The snapping turtles harass Jaeqil as Rolf and Primketh help him out of the pool, but they are little more than annoyances and do not pursue the ghoran beyond the water's edge.
Out of combat! Damage report:
Jaeqil (-1, -2 Nonlethal)
"Oh, that what they mean by snappers." Nighttail pauses thoughtfully as she looks down at the pool from atop Hak. "They whisper about them when they pass me and snicker. Or maybe that because they also threw rotting food at me."
A wooden gate blocks one tunnel leaving the chamber, but Primketh's steady hands make short work of the lock securing it. On the other side is a small, dry cave filled with a large number of weapons stashed in neatly-ordered stacks and piles. Most are small weapons for kobolds - Nighttail takes the opportunity to grab a spear and suit of leather armor - but a well-made longsword of cold iron sits in its own pile, too large for most kobolds to wield easily. (That one is medium-sized.)
Heading south, the adventurers find a single small pallet heaped with furs against the wall of another cave. Lying on the bed is a aged kobold, his green scales dull and eyes shut tight as he clutches something to his chest. As Primketh and Jaeqil approach, his eyes fly open to reveal milky white orbs. “I can tell... by your scent... that you are strangers... here," he weezes in a raspy voice. "If my nose... tells the truth, you bring the destruction I foretold. Good... good. I had hoped to... see our ruin before journeying to the afterworld, but I will settle... for listening to it. Beware the great scaly beast, strangers. He seems to speak reason, but his words are poison. And his bats, the ones he called from the darkness... they are harbingers... of lunacy and chaos... Dread Lord... Aeteperax... will surely be... your doom... as he... has... been... ours.” His head falls limp as he forces the last words out with great effort.
What do you do?
Rolf the Unworthy |
"Who eis wanting to carry theis?" Rolf holds up the cold iron longsword. "Theis kind of metal eis good for keeling certain critters. My people use them for keeling the Linnorms of the north. Good for fey too." He states as if the others had never realized such a thing.
If no one takes it, Rolf will stow it, just in case we need it.
When they reach the dying old kobold, Rolf listens intently, but keeps to himself. He makes mental notes of the warnings given to them, mulling over what he could possibly mean by bats being harbingers of lunacy and chaos.
"Best to make minds hard like steel." he screws up the adage.
When the others are ready, Rolf gets ready to follow, his crossbow loaded and up, just in case.
Primketh Noctua |
”They throw rotting food at you? Ew! I’m sorry, that’s just gross. I’m happy to see you able to arm and armor yourself though!”
