While I did not state that Emil was not going into the room, I did not place him in the room on the map deliberately, as he did not see the need if there were no significant enemies. I'll make a save, in case the spores have enough range to exit the room to where he and Pila are standing.

Emil: Fort: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Pila: Fort: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Emil peers into the room when he hears sounds of distress and coughing. He holds his breath and waits anxiously, watching to see if any in the room needs assistance to exit the room. He gestures for them to return outside, not wanting to make any noise that might alert enemies. He's not sure how such a threat should be countered, but leaving it alone seems best.

Jillian also holds her breath long enough to avoid taking any damage from the mold. She grabs the door to the south and yanks it open just as Selde casts her spell of thorns and Jillian quickly closes the door as fast as she can. As the garden begins to transform into treacherous territory, the group makes their exit from the mold-covered room back the way they came.

"What's Fangy complainin about?" you overhear one of guards saying, his voice carrying on the wind.

Howls and snarls from a large cat creature can be heard coming from the garden, and it would appear that its sounds of displeasure are loud enough that it has drawn the attention of the guards to the southeast who begin to make their way towards the garden to investigate.

What are you doing?

I don't think it matters, since the GM said the garden is the only place that has enough vegetation for the spell to produce impediments to movement.

Emil moves forward, hoping to get in range of the critter in the garden to apply one of his spells for controlling animals, assuming the beast would work its way out eventually. In the meantime, he fires an arrow at the nearest hobgoblin.

Thael maintains his position behind Jillian and nods as Selde suggests maintaining his more powerful spells for later.

"I was thinking the same thing," he says quietly.

TG1 | FF

Correct. Even though the range of the spell is large, the only area with vegetation is in the garden. Anyone coming within 15' of the garden will be struck.

The creatures from the south move forward to inspect the noises from the cougar in the garden area that is being pelted and entangled by thorns. As they approach, they are each also stuck by numerous sharp objects from the garden.

It was at this time that Emil and Selde fired off arrows and let the hobgoblins know where the real threat lay to the northwest. Both arrows strike, but they can tell it's going to take a lot more to bring these Ironfang soldiers down.

Emil and Pila move foward to near where Caspan emerges from the building, grateful to see he is okay. As he moves, he studies the birds he can see, forming a plan of action based on whether he can recognize the creatures as subject to one of his spells that affect animals.

Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30 Focused on the flying creatures. I assume this roll is good enough to recognize whether they are animals or not. Other information needed if available: INT, # of HD.

Since much of what Emil will do depends on the results of this knowledge check, I'll post his action after getting the results of the monster lore roll.

TG1 | FF

Yes, they are animals. The creatures were previously identified as very young Rocs. 5HD, 2INT.

Portrait Male Human Cleric of Erastil 6 | hp: |

Emil calls out to his companions, "Do NOT attack the birds. I'll try ta calm 'em enough to take 'em out o' the fight."

Emil prepares to cast Calm Animal as soon as the birds get within 40'. The spell requires they also be within 30' of each other. The spell can affect 2d4 + CL = 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (2, 1) + 6 = 9 hd of creatures. Since they are 5 hd each, this will only affect one, alas. The animal gets a DC 16 will save which negates the effect. If affected, I expect the animal will circle without attacking, as long as the effect lasts, which is 6 min.

If any bird is at ground level and in a location where Pila can use her sprint ability to attack via a charge attack, she'll charge and make a full attack.

Neither! It was successful and I am tracking it, but since they didn't act yet I hadn't typed it up in the narrative. It's moot now!

Selde's first shot fells the blue hobgoblin and she directs her next two attacks to the brown one in the rear who then is hit with the thorns from the garden again.

Thael's fire melts the first bird and scorches the other two as well, though not nearly as badly. Wren's missiles slam into the redish roc just as Caspan whiffs on all three of his attempts to hit it. Jillian steps up beside him and tries to slice the bird in two, but she misses as well.

Pila was grappling the bird, however, that bird is now since deceased after it burned to death. I'm assuming she doesn't rake the dead, burning bird? There is another bird to her south, but she can't rake that one.

Both of Emil's swipes miss, but Pila is able to sink her teeth into another bird to her south. She is able to grab a hold of this one like the other, preventing it from flying away. White is now grappled.

The two Ironfang soldiers fire arrows towards the party with their longbows, but only one arrow hits its mark on Pila. Pila damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

After firing their arrows, both Ironfang soldiers split in opposite directions. The pinkish one moves east towards a door in a large building and the one to the south moves southwest, disappearing out of sight around the corner.

The birds will continue to attack you, so if Caspan/Emil/Pila want to post their condition actions for this round with the others, that's fine.

I didn't realize the bird killed by Thael's spell was the one Pila had grabbed.

Wren, Jillian and Thael put down the first bird and injure the second, but not enough to take it out of the fight. The creature attacks Pila, the most injured looking creature and tries to take her out of the fight. First it critically injures her with a bite on her face that rips open her mouth and cheek Crit Damage: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 4) + 2 = 10 before then slashing her again with a talon into the already terrible wound Pila damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 Should take her to -5.

Emil misses, but Caspan punches the bird hard with his fist and sends it to the ground, taking it out of the fight.

Both of the hobgoblins disappear, one having ran to the east and another to the south. Jillian takes a step forward to chase one when she slips on a loose rock and twists her ankle badly. She reaches down and grabs it, cursing. "Go on, I'll be right behind you."
I'm setting Jillian out until Dak returns. You will push forward with five for now.

Dropping out of initiative since there are no immediate threats visible. You may pursue immediately if you wish to not rest, recover and plan. If you wish to stop and search the fallen hobgoblin, I can list its loot.

Pila has 39 hp and the only damage I can find listed for her this battle was the two hits just posted, for 15 points, and one earlier for 6. She should still have 24 left. Was there other damage to her that wasn't posted or is this leftover from an earlier battle?

Also there was a duplicate post (Aug. 2). The first lists Emil as taking 5 damage while the second dicebot came up with 3. I assume the first is the official post and the second should be ignored.

Emil is good to go. We at least need to move south to see what is currently hidden. We must be wary of the big cat in the overgrown garden. Emil can try one of his animal control spells on it if it breaks out and attacks.

TG1 | FF

On Roll 20 Pila had 13 HP remaining, that is where my post came from. This is what I've used in the past, so if that is in error and she's still up, that's fine I'm not going to make a big deal about it, but I'd like a visible place to track her HP so I'm aware of it. If you don't want to use Roll20, then please add her HP to the end of your statline somewhere.

The group moves south past the building towards the garden that fills the space between the buildings to the northeast and southwest. The garden contains a profusion of vegetable plants, small fruit trees, and climbing vines. Doors into the adjacent buildings are just visible through the riot of vegetation. It's not towards the vegetation your eyes are drawn however, its the cougar who is growling at you that has your attention. It eyes you and tenses its muscles, preparing to strike.

Sense Motive DC20/Handle Animal DC15:
The large cat is defensive of its territory and as long as you stay clear of the garden, it looks like it will not engage you.

You need to walk about 30' past the garden to get to the door to the southwest. How would you like to proceed?

Portrait Male Human Cleric of Erastil 6 | hp: |

Before moving on, Emil channels energy a few times to heal up the wounds of the previous battle.

Positive Energy Channel: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 2) = 4
Positive Energy Channel: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1) = 7

These heal Caspan and Emil, but Pila is still showing some red scabs where the healing energy had not completely restored health, so he converts a spell into a curing spell to take care of the rest. Converts the 1st level positive pulse spell into CLW.

CLW, Frontier Healer: 1d8 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 1 = 10

Handle Animal: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23

As the group gets close to the garden, Emil looks the big cat in the eye and says in sounds it could understand, "If ya don't bother us, we won't bother you."

To the group he says, "Fluffy an' I have an understanding: stay clear o' the garden, an' he won't interfere with us."

Emil and Pila then begin to skirt the dense thickets extending beyond the garden, keeping a wary eye on the cougar. Pila treads right behind him, looking nervously at his large cousin. Moved one double move on the Roll 20 map. Emil will let the others take the lead while he follows, keeping an eye on the cougar.
