”Okay Adarion, yes. It is a good idea to rest. Let us look around on this area for a little while first until our protection spells go away.”

Sven leads everyone to the last room they didn’t search, and searches carefully and exhaustively.

Deciding to leave the watery room be for now the group heads back to search the rest of this lower level. Having throughly searched the room with the shadows already, but also having found a secret door there, Sven takes his time as he back tracks through the level. In the hall, near the carving of coins Sven, upon closer examination, finds something they missed before. On both sides of the carving there are two small slots, about the size of a coin. Otherwise, there is little else of interest in the hall.

Before doing anything with it Sven finishes searching the rest of the level. In the entry room he finds nothing of interest. However, in woman's room he finds some other items of interest.

There are several sheets of notes and several journals that lie on the tables here. It would take hours to sort through everything, but perhaps would be a good thing to do when you were waiting to rest for new spells. In addition to the notes there are various holy texts, scrolls, relics, and objects.

Know. Religion DC20 - Other stuff on shelves:
You recognize these items as sacred objects to the worship of Lamashtu.

The fountain in the room is magical and after some examination you realize it is a source of magically created clean drinking water. The burning skulls are simply enchanted with a continual flame spell.

Skulls of continual flame! Worth something to someone!

Sven and Bart check the slots for traps, exhaustively per our normal process then Sven fishes out some gold. "Stay back out of the room. Naesehorn and I are not injured - we will drop in some coins - maybe we will get more rewards."

He shoos the others out of the room, and drops a gold into each slot.

Uvara stands near him, ready to attack more enemies, should they appear.

Does anyone resist getting kicked out of the room by Sven?

CotCT | HR | MM | RoA | RotRL1 | SD | SS1 | SS2 | WftC_1 | WftC_2 |

Too late they have been kicked!

Inserting at least a coin into each slot causes the pillar to noisily and slowly grind down into the floor. Beyond is a hall with three sets of doors, one to the north, east and south. The floor here is caked in dust and cob webs hang all over the room. It is pretty apparent no one has stepped foot beyond that pillar for some time.

M Half-Orc (Ulfen) Druid (Goliath Druid) 3 Speed 20 ft | HP 23/23| AC 21 ( Barkskin), T 13, FF 17 | F +6, R +5, W +8 | CMD 17 (15 FF) | Init +3 | Per +11

Sven grumbles, "this is NOT treasure."

He approaches the dusty hall, and says "old hall, Bart can look for old traps. I will look for scythes and plates."

Uvara will follow close behind Bart and Sven, as Sven looks for Mechanical traps too.

Take 10 with Bart on searching the entrance to the old dusty hall for 21. Bart searches with a 17 (magical traps) IIRC.

Note: everyone let me know if we're going too fast, or if you want to chime in, I'm not trying to be deliberately pushy!

Checking the hall and then each of the doors the group finds there are no traps. The north and east door are unlocked but the southern door has an intricate lock, the key hole to which appears to be a seven pointed star.

Adarion shrugs at Sven, "We can try if you think we'll be okay but that thing looks dangerous. It might be easier to take it on after the shadows' strength drain has been weakened."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now

Adarion looks in excitedly from the door as the coins cause the pillars to drop down into the floor, he examines the room once the others have checked for traps and given it the all-clear. He looks at the seven-pointed star lock with interest, trying to figure out if he saw anything that might fit it recently. He points to the northern door, near Sven. "Shall we try this one next? Maybe the key to this lock will be one of these two rooms?"

Sven nods, "yes, though these monster people are not smart if they leave their special keys adjacent to special keyholes. Why even have a key!" Sven looks confused, and then Uvara pops open the north door.

"Hmm... I suppose people like to lock away their valuables or secrets. You're right though, it would be pointless to hide the key right beside it, but maybe there was a sentry who allowed access? We might even find something of value in there even if it's not the key."

Opening the northern door first, this barren room contains an upraised dais on which sits a marble throne. To either side stand statues of a man clutching a book and a glaive. A ghostly figure seems to be seated in the throne, an image of the same man who appears in the statues. He seems to be addressing an audience as he moves his hands about, his fingers decorated with hooked rings, but the words issuing from his phantom mouth are difficult to make out and in a strange language.

Thassilonian:
The ghostly figure seems to be repeating the same thing over and over. [b]"…is upon us, but I command you remain. Witness my power, how Alaznist’s petty wrath is but a f lash compared to my strength. Take my final work to your graves, and let its memory be the last thing you…"

If you can understand what the statue is saying you can try your Know. History check again to identify the man with a +2 bonus.

Adarion's eyes light up as he hears the figure speaking what he recognises as Thassilonian. He translates for the rest of the group. "He seems to be repeating the same phrase over and over;

Sven nods, ”um, can you write this down? Maybe Nyx can? He likes writing runes. You smart people can look into it later.”

Sven then looks for a key. Naesehorn looks for a vegetable.

"So it's an illusion then?" Bartholomew squints at the figure, trying to study it without getting any closer. "Why would someone make an illusion down here of all places? It's not even a very good one - maybe it would fool a goblin or a small child, but that would be about it."

"Um, it is old, and maybe broken, and also this was maybe once part of the Thassilonian empire. Maybe important to them? Maybe it is not for fooling, as much as an honor-message or something." Sven and Uvara move to the next room and pop it open. It should have already been searched, iirc.

Moving onto the next room, this room contains three low tables, their tops covered with a strange and chilling selection of tools, saws, long-bladed knives, and objects whose purpose is not readily apparent. A strange collection of bones lies near the southern table, too many to be one skeleton, but too few to be two.

Heal - Bones DC15:
The skeleton seems to have belonged to a twoheaded man with an additional partial skeleton of a smaller man growing from the small of his back.

The surgical tools on the tables are exquisitely made, and are worth 100 gp in all. Sitting on the easternmost table is an object that, upon closer examination, isn’t a tool at all. It appears to be a silver and gold seven-pointed star; one surface is studded with nodules and blades, and the other features a thin, curved handle. This looks to be a perfect fit for the keyhole on the southern door.

Other than the tools, key and skeleton there is nothing else of interest in the room.

Moving on to the final door, the group does detect an overwhelming magical aura on the door itself but they can't detect anything into the other room, its like the door is blocking them from detecting anything on the other side.

Sven grunts, "okay, yes, safe right? At least the door. When we open this - let us take more precautions. Maybe there are more ghosts like before."

Sven hands the key to Uvara and she plops it in, opening the door. They then step back and everyone detects from outside of the room.

Inserting the key and turning it the doors pop open enough that you can pull the two large stone slabs open. As you do a wave of hot air rushes out over the group, a stark contrast to the cold, damp lifeless stone in the rest of the place. This room is lit primarily by a 10-foot-long pit of flickering fire that fills the room with a strange humid heat and the smell of burning hair. In the northern corners of the room, wooden risers each hold several dozen golden candles that burn without melting, while to the south the wall bears an immense carving of a seven-pointed star.

The candles in the north all detect as magic. As well there is a magical aura near the fire pit. Otherwise from what you can see the room appears to be empty.

"Is that magic a trap?"

Can Bart tell if the magic aura near the pit is a trap from outside of the room? Otherwise, can someone with K. Arcana have a go at it? Sven has none.

Uvara prepares to move in, and Sven searches for traps, spending a few minutes.

Take 20 perception just outside the door with Uvara, looking for mechanical traps for 31. I think Bart can look for magic traps at 27.

If we find no traps, we start collecting the candles, Uvara goes first.

Uvara moves into the room and is looking at the candles. Each of the racks in the northern corners contains 30 eternal candles (60 candles in all), minor magic candles that burn eternally without heat, similar to a continual f lame spell but shedding only shadowy light in a 5-foot radius. Each eternal candle is worth 25 gp.

As she looks to start taking them however, out of nowhere a massive beast appears and begins to rip into her.

My idea here is that grease will force it to move at half speed until it gets through the greased patch (even though it's guaranteed to make the Acrobatics check), which will hopefully be long enough for us to gain a headstart. So if it's still in the room and everyone withdraws, I can cast the spell in front of it but behind the group so only it will be slowed. Adarion will also move his full 30ft before casting the spell, so we should all be roughly the same distance from it when we start running.

Sven nods, and he and Naesehorn drag Uvara's body past the coin sculpture.

Nyx follows behind and goes into the same room.

Sven moves after Nyx and Bart, but before Adarion. Sven and Naesehorn block the door.

The group begins to retreat, Adarion casts his spell and falls back as well. For now, there is nothing, no sign of the monster that ended Uvara, but it had vanished into thin air so perhaps it is still here lurking or who knows what. Either way, it hasn't attacked again as of yet.

If you plan to keep retreating together we can go out of combat for now.

Sven and Naesehorn solidly stand in front of the hall - waiting for something to come. When nothing comes, he looks confused.

"Hmmm - a puzzle. It didn't follow us." He scratches his head. "What should we do, yes?"

"Does anyone know what the wolf beast was? I want to kill it for killing Uvara..." He hefts his scythe.

We saw it go invisible, so I could try to faerie fire in the room where it was. But it's a small area spell - it's possible that it could be on the other side of the little room. We can also rest and prepare better spells... I'm for killing it if we can - even if it means later.

Adarion has a scroll of see invisibility that we got from the female mage. We can use that if needs be but I'm not sure we can take it out with our reduced numbers. Might be best to come back after our party is brought back to full. Adarion also made the knowledge check, so we know it's a greater barghest. See info below.

You recognize this monster as a greater barghast. You know it is resistant to damage from weapons that are not magical.

You know everything there is to know about greater barghasts.

To note, there is going to be some 'downtime' before you get a new party member (ooc). As long as you are ok waiting and thing it will still be here when you return you are welcome to wait to deal with it, but you will need to remember to come back and do that once you actually get your new party member.

Ahh, okay, let's leave and come back. We can fight the helmet later too.

Sven grunts, "Okay, let us gather up all these materials from the witches and take the corpses of Gudada and Uvara back for burial, yes? We can fight the helmet later." He pauses, "I want to talk to Gogmurt too - maybe he will let us search around for any other clues before we leave."

Can we head out to get our replacement paladin, and on the way, ask Gogmurt to just look around the upper level to see if there's anything we missed in terms of info? We won't take stuff without his permission, but Sven is pretty annoyed that two people died. He's wanting compensation from someone even if asking the goblins for it is nonsensical. Should we be level 4 soon, if we're leaving?

Yup once you guys are *done* with Thisteltop for the time being and ready to head back to Sandpoint for awhile you will be leveling up to 4th.

Adarion nods at Sven, the weariness plain on his face. He helps gather all their things, saying an Elven blessing over the bodies of their companions. He thinks of Khalbar as he says the blessing, hoping that the big man was not killed when he fell into the water.

"If we can I feel that we should also bring back the body of the woman with the demon arm. She seemed to be the leader of the attack. Perhaps someone in Sandpoint might know who she was?"
