Caster's potential submission. GM, the player's guide doesn't list Koya as a viable choice for childhood crush. But this salty old caravan guard has had his eye on her for a while! Would you allow me to take that trait with her as my crush?

Sure, I don't see why not.

Grand Lodge

Still a work in progress as I have not had time to write out the backstory, but this alias is my submission.

Great! Thanks.

Dots really hard

I've been wanting to play this campaign for so long, but recruitment threads for it are few and far between.

I am the kind of player who is more interested in storytelling, roleplaying and character development than in mechanics and min-maxing.

I made Torra a while ago specifically for this campaign, but if we are lacking specific roles in the submissions so far I can happily whip up a new character. I am intimately familiar with Sandpoint from having run Rise of the Runelords as a GM until last year.

While you're more than welcome to submit Torra, I do think we've got a fair number of damage-dealers. Ultimately, its up to you. :D

EDIT: Let's see, we've got:

Avric K NG half-orc Brawler
Zvetlana CG human White-Haired Witch

As well as potential/incompletes:'
Ol' Pike CG human Bloodrager
Nikka Eversong N halfling Druid
Gudada Perrun CG human Unchained Rogue
Kenta Kaijitsu ?? human Swashbuckler
Torra Volkerdam LN dwarf Monk

I'm probably missing some folks, so poke me if that's the case.

I've also misidentified who's where, I now realize. Oops. Gudada should be in the complete section, and Avric in the potential/incomplete.

Liberty's Edge

I'm in Nikka's campaign, and I'd like to apply similarly, but with a different character. Likely a Varisian Pilgrim Cleric of Desna, or an Eldritch Archer magus.

Understood. I make no promises of accepting you guys, but I will remain open to those apps if your other game falls through.

Background:

That Samton Verro should take on wizardy is perhaps not surprising. After all, the two most influential men in his life, the gnome cartographer Veznutt Parooh and the local headmaster Ilsoari Gandethus, are both accomplished practitioners of the arcane. But both men are surprised to see young Sam become a fully proficient wizard at the tender age of eighteen. Pleased, to be sure, but surprised. It’s not that the two had low expectations for the young man. Not at all; as he grew up under the care, tutelage and indeed roof of Gandethus's school/orphanage, both his parents having unfortunately perished in a goblin attack, Sam displayed every sign of having a good head on his shoulders. And when he came of age and was apprenticed to Parooh, as a cartographer in training, the gnome too took a liking to the well-mannered and clearly bright young man. Both expressed hope that Sam would attend higher education in Magnimar or perhaps even the Twilight Academy in Galduria. That Samton would train to wield magic should not surprise them.
But that’s just it; Sam never received any training. Samton Verro is entirely self-taught and a wizard at eighteen. And this does surprise Ilsoari and Parooh, as it should anyone. Especially as both agree that while their young ward is very sensible, neither have seen anything that would indicate outright genius. Nothing less can explain Sam’s abilities.

Every mystery has an answer, however, as Samton himself would tell you. And the answer to the mystery of how young Sam Verro managed to master what would take the typical wizard years of study is simple: he cheated. Sam is what is known to some as a pact wizard, a highly derided subsection of magicians who consort with otherworldly forces to forego years of training for immediate benefits. Unbeknownst to Parooh and Gandethus, Sam has spent every penny of his meagre earnings from his master on books dealing with supernatural and extraplanar beings outside this world, desperate to contract and barter with them. It took some time, more than he would have liked, but finally, on one rainy evening inside Parooh's shop, as Sam sat bleary-eyed in front of his desk sketching a map, it contacted him. The ink on the paper started shifting to form strange unknown words, and it was then that he knew something had answered his pleas.

The reader might now be wondering why, why for goodness' sake, a perfectly normal bright young lad like Sam would expose himself to who-knows-what nefarious beings in exchange for power. Beings that would someday certainly demand a hefty price for their aid. The answer is, again, simple. And it has a name: Shalelu Andosana. Sam first met the enigmatic elf warden to Sandpoint when he was just seven years old. He doesn't remember much of the goblin incident that claimed his family on the road from Galduria to Sandpoint, but he does remember her. He knows he owes her his life. As might be expected with such a traumatic event, especially being so young, Sam was left with a deep respect, even a reverence, for Shalelu. His admiration never waned as he grew up in Turandarok Academy, and he treasured every opportunity for greeting, or even speaking to, the elusive elf whenever she stopped in town. However, as Sam matured from childhood to adolescence his feelings towards Shalelu grew more complex. He started getting nervous whenever he saw her. He became increasingly desperate to impress her. He grew obsessed with such peculiar questions as what her hair smelled like. In short, Sam was and remains head over heels in love.

It has often been said that romantic relationships between humans and elves are a fool’s errand, and Sam is no fool. While ‘dalliances’ between the two races are relatively common, a lasting relationship is near impossible. Unfortunately, while Samton pines for any attention from Shalelu, what he truly wants is exactly that. He is not interested in a casual tryst, only in eternal devotion. Sam wants the elf to make an honest man out of him.
The problem, of course, (beyond the fact that he has no idea how to even begin to express his feelings) lies in the ludicrous age difference between the two, and, crucially, their life expectancy. Expecting eternal devotion from a partner likely to outlive you by several hundred years is a cruel thing indeed. Sam loves Shalelu too much to demand that of her. Really, it would take a miracle for there to even be any chance at the lasting relationship he seeks. But seeing as the gods are busy, Sam turned to the next best thing: magic.
If anyone were to ask Samton why he took up magic, his answer would be rather trite and predictable. He would say, like so many wizards before him, that the arcane studies offer the only real glimpse at universal truth and understanding of the universe. A part of him would even mean this; Sam is quite the proponent of rationalism and objective thought. But the truth is that the young man only started practicing magic, transmutation magic specifically, to fulfil his ultimate ambition: immortality. Sam hopes that by putting his own lifespan on equal footing with the elven Shalelu, he can become a worthy, more realistic, partner to her. And if he happens to impress her along the way, so much the better...

Sam realizes the chances of his grand plans coming together are next to nil. He also fully understands that he's risking much by foregoing traditional magical study and consorting with alien beings. But love makes people do crazy things, and if you can't live with hope then why live at all?

Comments:

So, if you've gotten this far, thanks for reading. I want to just briefly discuss some mechanics, how I'm hoping they're going to play into the character and AP story, and emphasize that I'm totally willing to make minor changes to better fit the final party. For example, I chose the Ancestors witch patron because I have this idea that the character's otherworldly patron might actually be tied to Tian Xia somehow. Said patron empowers him only because it knows he will ultimately help Ameiko get the throne, something a being tied to the theme of 'ancestors' would be interested in. That's not a spoiler, is it? I mean, it's on the cover of the AP...

Regardless, that's just an idea and obviously completely in the hands of the GM, really. I wouldn't have any problem swapping the patron out for Healing instead, if the party is lacking in that department. I'm very much imagining Sam's role in the group being a buffer anyway. That, and throwing out save-or-suck spells at the enemy. As far as in-character motivation goes, he's obviously willing to go on the grand journey the AP revolves around simply because it means following Shalelu, but he also has secondary goals. For one, he wants to grow more powerful, but I also like the thought of him mapping out every region the party travels through in a grand cartography project. You may have noticed the Craft (maps) I gave him. I'm thinking he wants to gift the final outcome to Parooh the gnome back in Sandpoint when all's said and done, as thanks for taking him on as apprentice.

I could also mention that despite the True Neutral alignment I gave him in the crunch, Sam is a decent guy who on a philosophical level completely agrees with the more conventional Good PCs about helping the weak, protecting the innocent and all that jazz. It's just that he's so humble Sam views such charity an imposition on others. Who is he to interfere in others' lives? I totally expect him to gravitate towards a NG alignment throughout the game though.

Again, thanks for reading, and thanks for running the game, man, with or without me.

Another application to throw on the pile, Second. I think he's done, but do speak up if you find something missing or just have questions. This is a weird one for me as I've never made a character primarily motivated by romance before, nor am I even sure that's a particularly good idea, but I guess there a first for everything.

I'm pretty familiar with Sandpoint where the game starts out, if that's a concern, having myself run the RotR path years ago, but I know next to nothing about Jade Regent itself. I hear it's a good one despite the caravan rules being a bit iffy. Hoping to join.

Oh, and +1 on using google slides for the maps. It's a good way to do it.

Oh, neat. I like what I'm seeing from everyone, so far.

Just one question, @Red Heat - why does a wizard have a witch patron?

Never mind, found that he's a pact wizard. Makes sense now.

The Exchange

I hope this isn’t foreshadowing, but I was the first character submitted and left off the list entirely.

If I need to re-submit a more memorable character, let me know!

It's just that you're so small that when I looked around, my gaze went right over your head.! :P

Oops! See, I knew I forgot someone. Sorry about that. Here, lemme do a new list.

working on a Shoanti Animist Unsworn Shaman diplomancer/utility healer, and will create backstory today. :)

”Or, are my efforts to not dis-attract unwanted attention that I’m allegedly trying to avoid paying off by hiding in plain sight?”

I can multiclass Torra into either a cleric or a sorcerer (empyreal bloodline), or rebuild her as a kineticist (elemental ascetic). Let me know what you prefer.

Torra Voliokerdam wrote:

Hm... I have no preference, in all honesty - it's up to you. That said, I'm less familiar with the occult classes, so I'd need to learn more if you rebuilt her as a kineticist. Not that that's saying you shouldn't do it! I won't reject someone just because they built a class I'm not familiar with.

I'm getting things together but realizing I could use a little clarification on what Koya is like so I can have a reasonable idea what my character would like about her. It seems like she's smart, wise, and adventurous, which helps. Does she like to tell stories? The player's guide mentions that she likes stories.

On an unrelated note, my plan is to MC fighter with bloodrager so I think I'm going to start fighter. It makes more sense to me as that feels like more of an everyday person. When his friends (particularly Koya) are threatened, he tends to get angry and protective. Eventually, this will manifest itself as bloodrage.

I’m still planning to submit a wayang, though I go back and forth between unRogue, Ninja*, and Oracle. Also, I need to do some more reading and thinking on why there’d be a wayang in Varisia.

*Why is there no unNinja? UnRogue is such a better class for the role, but Ninja is so much more flavorful for this campaign. Argh.

Then I'll use this avatar when bloodraging. That way my status line will make it easier to keep track of how my stats change in bloodrage.

I see a few arcs along which my character would develop: Getting worse at controlling his anger issues then trying to fix that, his relationship with Koya (growing closer or further apart), his desire to explore new places, and his belief that the world is simple. There are bullies and there are friends. I see this last belief being really challenged by the AP...

Will finish backstory soon. Then I should be good for review.

Well, unRogue can learn Ninja tricks, right? More flavor should come from play of the character rather than mechanics anyway, right?

I mean, there's a case to be made that 'Dada should built as a Bard and not a Rogue. It isn't wrong, but it is a different emphasis is all. There's a lot more difference mechanically between rogue and bard than rogue and ninja.

Ol' Pike wrote:

Koya Things:

Niska Mvashti, Koya's mother, was easily the oldest person in Sandpoint until her very recent death of old age. Koya herself is "well over 60 in age," and has long traveled with caravans throughout Varisia, though she's never been beyond its borders or frontiers, tales from which are her favorites, and the reason she's been pushing so hard to go on a long journey now that her twilight years are upon her. She's adventurous, devoutly bound to Desna, and generally a motherly figure nowadays, though she's had more than a few wildfire affairs as a youth, rumor says. She's made mention of wanting to go either north to the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, or even south into Cheliax, though both would likely be quite dangerous.

So, with that said, I assume you don't want to take the penalty/bonuses for age? I don't have a preference, but if I choose you, then I won't take someone who wants the opposite, just 'cause there's likely potential for abuse of that.

@The Second GM, would it be possible to play an 'unchained' ninja (i.e. one with class features ninja shares with rogue swapped for u-rogue equivalents)?

I'm considering writing up a child of Minkaian immigrants who doesn't approve of their family abandoning their martial roots a generation or two back and is willing to take all kinds of risks for the sake of recovering their ancestors' craft and honour.

Like I said implied and meant to say upthread, I'm not entirely sure of what the Unchained Rogue (and Barbarian, Monk, and Summoner) does, and thus am somewhat reluctant to allow that. I mean, I might be open to it, depending on how it falls out, but I'm... wary, because of my (somewhat lamentable) ignorance.

The Exchange

The unchained versions, according to Paizo, were "four new takes on existing classes, which have been redesigned to improve their ease of use and power relative to other classes. In addition, this section contains new rules that relate to character advancement."

In the case of Summoner, it was a nerf. The other three were buffs.

As for making a new 'unchained' class, that will be your decision.

Fair enough. @Tavarokk, what are the specific features that would be changed?

The Second GM wrote:

U.Rogue gets Finesse training (finesse at lvl 1 and dex to damage with a weapon of choice at 3), Debilitating injury (either AC, attack or speed short term debuff on sneak attack hit) and Rogue's edge (advanced skill use options for skills of choice) over normal rogue. Of those, Finesse training is the big one, the other two are nice to have but not essential.

Alternatively, there has been a 3pp version that does more or less the same thing.

Any of the above would work.

Hm... and what features of the ninja would you be replacing with these? I admit to being somewhat reluctant to allowing an exception to my no 3pp materials, and I'm not quite sure what would happen in the case that I allowed this.

The Second GM wrote:

Technically, they're added on top of old rogue's class features rather than instead of any prior ones, but if you feel that's too overpowered for ninja, trading Poison Use and a ninja trick for Finesse training should suffice as well.

I haven't had time to write down the backgrounds or make aliases yet, but here's Mythweavers sheets for unchained summoner Cassiel and her eidolon Kagu. The eidolon is a fire elemental, mostly based on the kaenju variant of the raiju. Campaign trait is Student Survivalist.

I'd like to submit a character! This is an Arcanist who has invested in some face abilities.

Backstory:
Growing up near Koya, Mick and Sandru began as friends of convenience, but quickly grew into a devilish pair. With a penchant for trouble, the duo would raise a mischievous sort of hell on the neighborhood, much to the chagrin of Koya (which they paid for with their hides on more than one occasion). Unfortunately for the pair, Sandru's wanderlust expanded rapidly as they became teenagers while Mick became increasingly invested in the Sandpoint community. While this never created a true wedge in their relationship, it did eventually result in their separation when Sandru finally set out on his own.

When Sandru left for his life of adventuring, Jubrayl, Sandru's older brother, recruited Mick for the Sczarni. With his penchant for enchantment magic, Mick made the perfect lookout, sending warnings and updates to the other criminals doing the real dirty work. (This is a function of his Force of Will Arcane School ability where he would charm his companions and then stand outside, telepathically letting them know what was going on outside.)

Alas, one of their break-ins was tipped off to the town guard and Mick, being a well liked but ultimately low-ranking grunt, wound up doing time for it. Embittered by being left out to dry by his former comrades combined with frequent visits during his imprisonment by an Abadarian Priest, Aeneas Cicero, steadily converted him to the faith. Following his conversion, Sheriff Hemlock recruited Mick to help bust further Sczarni activities, utilizing his insider knowledge and natural talents.

Now that Mick has turned over a new leaf, not to mention his large personality and distinguishable features, he is looking to skip town and lay low for a while. Fortunately for him, his childhood friend Sandru is just the ticket he needs...
________

Mick is a handsome, talented man just over thirty years of age with deep olive skin. Despite the gentle creases forming in the corners of his eyes and around his smile line, his green eyes and way with words have gotten him into plenty of trouble, but has also gotten him out of more. He enjoys feeling in control and being socially in charge. If it wasn't evident already, he also has a natural tendency to be self-important and overconfident.

Unknown to Mick:
The Abadarian priest made visits at the Sheriff's request as part of a trial criminal redemption program. Mick would never admit it, but he sees the priest's visits as divine intervention from Abadar himself.

The person who arranged for Mick to do time and to let the other gang members free was Jubrayl himself.

Trait Note:
Friend in Every Town is more representative of Mick's former Sczarni affiliation. While he might have been a low ranking grunt during his criminal career, he knew and worked with Sczarni agents from an innumerable variety of locations.

I'm willing to make changes/take suggestions/add more about areas of interest. Just let me know!

Hm... arg. I kind of want to let you do it, but at the same time, I'm always cautious about modifying the default stuff like this.

Why don't you go ahead and add them, but under the provision that I would really need a great story? ... I really don't like making exceptions, because that runs the risk of everyone wanting little things, and defeating the purpose of the rules. And then I'm showing favoritism, and... just bad things.

Hm, if you want a specific name for the Abadarian priest, there... huh. There's apparently no priest of Abadar in Sandpoint, canonically, despite him being one of the six deities represented in the Sandpoint Cathedral. That said, I don't mind if you make him (or her) up for the purposes of the backstory, as Abadarian priests are often assigned to backwater places to settle and spread the faith (and civilization).

For real?! Why would they list it and not give them a priest?!

I'll come up with a name and edit it into my submission. Any glaring omissions or something you want me to expand on?

I know, right? There's a canonical acolyte for each of the other deities, plus Father Zantus, which results in a cleric for every deity except Abadar, and two for Desna.

Sandru's Life details for Gummy Bear:

Sandru, Jubrayl, and their younger brother Alder were orphaned early in life, by storms that struck the the Lost Coast when Sandru was 7, Alder was 2, and Jubrayl was old enough to strike out on his own. Sandru and Alder were taken in by Koya, but Jubrayl struck out on his own and joined the Sczarni. Maybe you could expand on how Sandru and Mick met, when they separated, etc. Also note that Sandru is nearing middle age (by the rules of the game, that is), at thirty-one, which might also influence you.

Adjustments made and not a minute too soon! My edit window is now closed, so that will pretty much complete my submission unless I have some sort of epiphany and will post again with it. Looking forward to the 21st for a decision!

I would like to submit Gulujak for your consideration.

Gulujak is a half-orc hunter whose intellect and wisdom have allowed him to survive a dangerous childhood. He can track by scent and relies a great deal on his ability to perceive the little things to survive. He is plagued by a cantankerous she-wolf named Witch. Neither Gulujak nor the she-wolf will admit they are fond of each other much to the amusement of his mentor, Shalelu. Gulujak has developed a crush on Ameiko and has been secretly practicing singing which inevitably causes Witch to howl.

I imagine that Gulujak will be able to fill a variety of roles. He can scout and fight from range, heal, summon allies, and his wolf companion can provide some fighting also.

I will be adding additional background detail but wanted to get my name on the list.

Sure thing. One minor nitpick that jumped out at me - Common in Avistan isn't Varisian, but Taldane. Varisian is a separate language, which you could legitimately take as a bonus language, if you so chose.

Beyond that, looks good so far.

Reworked Torra as an earth kineticist (basically an earthbender). Role - blaster, controller.

Sounds good to me.

In the same vein, I think there is a dearth of healers/supporters at the moment, based on nothing more than my instinct, rather than a definite count, for anyone who wants to submit such things.

Thank you for the comment. I have made the correction and exchanged gnoll for Varisian.

Grand Lodge

Avric's application is ready.

Hopefully the backstory is not too long for you.

As an update, I should have my character up this evening. I am making a samurai.

Dark Archive

I'm thinking of applying with a spiritualist with a kindness phantom as a support character.

Question for the GM:
Would it be a problem, story-wise, if the phantom was the spirit of Niska Mvashti? I really like the Friend of the Family trait, and was thinking of taking it one step further. Niska would have stayed around to watch over and protect her daughter, but she's be reluctant to manifest when her daughter was around.

No such thing! :P Mind, I'll probably look at it in more detail in the morning.

Been reading through the splatbook on Sandpoint and there actually are holy people of Abadar in town, they just don't work at the temple. There is a Paladin of Abadar running the mercantile league and functioning as city planner and there is a Cleric of Abadar, the Paladin's sister, running a secondhand store.

Oh, good points. I forgot about them.

Ina-Quah-Shtii was born a small child to a large family, of the Shikiiri-Quah who frequently traded at the cascades of the Yondabaraki near Kaer Maga. His size and odd quiet were noted by the tribal elders as auspicious, and when the boy, known as “Naqua”, wrestled with nightmares and visions, it was clear; his destiny was to be a shaman of the people. Unfortunately, his parents did not wish this—shamans were outcasts, not warriors. At the age of 10, they cast him out. Having no place to go, he found passage with entertainers on the river. Along the way, he and they discovered that Naqua was a natural at quelling disputes and gathering information from locals. Slowly, Naqua learned to quell his nightmares, beginning to tame the spirits he saw in everything.

After they reached Magnimar, one of the minstrels suggested that Naqua head north—a bard by the name of Ameiko Kaijitsu could use a hand running bar and setting up performances, what with those scoundrels at the Sandpoint Theater trying to bite on her business. Ameiko proved to be an excellent employer, but soon after the Shoanti youth started, the Troubles began in Sandpoint, and after a short time, the town suffered many losses from goblin attacks—and Ameiko found herself short a brother. Her new hire became something of a foster sibling to her, and they became fast friends.

Naqua became a well known oddity in town—a humble, young, “uncivilized” Shoanti wearing dull greys, sometimes stained with earth, and the white and blue strips of cloth tied here and there to mark a shaman, with the bare minimum of tattoos, and yet, extremely personable, and quick to share a laugh with his ‘big sister’ Ameiko. Naqua noticed Ameiko’s restlessness at at night, and felt the same thing—was something calling to him? Upon his 15th birthday, a sign appeared; a thrush came down from the sky and he could feel new spirit powers flowing through him. But that was a year ago, and nothing new has happened. Uncertain of where to go, he polishes glasses in the Rusty Dragon, speaks to rocks and plants, and looks toward the Storval Plateau with some longing.
