Ah... well, even if Mort approves, I could instead go with:
That or STR 7 / WIS 9.
Or STR 8 / INT 10 and drop a skill.
Reason: I'll want 17 DEX eventually for Manyshot.
Also, in addition to having a Cure spell in every slot, my Flowering Lattice produces goodberries every week. If the GM permits, I'd like them to be goodcherries to support the sakura imagery.
Oh, is there a build your character section in recruitment? It might answer some things.
The build notes I read are in post #1 of this discussion thread. Mort mentioned being by-the-book. With me being a cheapskate and totally freeloading whatever can be found online, I used a point-buy calculator to build Hanako, and checked other characters for precedent.
If legal by Mort's call, I prefer my 6 STR / 19 CHA as posted above over the 5 STR / 20 CHA build from the other page.
I definitely need to know if Mort's cool with Natural Finesse, as I found it on SRD but not AoN[-url]. (I expect anything on AoN is legit.)
Stats aside, I plan to RP Hanako's little heart out. She's one who considers herself a good person, but she does have a bestial side if she's cornered.
So, how to get her in-game?
• (1) Did she find refuge in the ratlings' tunnels? (She can fit as a fox and can speak Aklo.)
• (2) Is she, as Mort said, sent to investigate so-and-so? And if so, did she only agree (lie) to in order to get away from someone? Or did she agree (truth) because she still wants to avenge her parents?
• Hanako's about 19 (or so); her parents have been dead for eleven (or so) years. I'm thinking much of her childhood was spent in fox form (among a few kitsune in hiding and several genuine foxes), and once in her teens, an influential kitsune helped her get into an all-female troupe (similar to what my Japanese friend told me about last night). I'll give up a rank in perception for one in survival to reflect this past.
-and this leads to a plausible third option-
• (3) Is she simply another survivor that the party finds before the monsters do? (Found unconscious by Winter, disoriented by a nightmare and wondering how she got here, or something equally unspectacular.
Sorry to follow the double-post faux pas with an audacious triple-post. But… I just read the backstories of the current party members and I'm thinking: evil deal for revenge works.
Two questions for Mort:
• (1) Does the idea of kitsune-hunters seem plausible? "Fox Hunters"... they're 'gentlemen' who all look like Col. Mustard and hunt down kitsune and other bestial humanoids (like centaurs, minotaurs, and the motaur from those Progressive ads) believing them to be abominations. Something like: hillbilly + sheep = satyr.
• (2) Could Hanako still be an otherwise innocent and devout follower of Shelyn? I'm thinking she performs for the very gentlemen who murdered her parents, using her acting skills to distract while an over-the-top assassination from her fellow beastwoman, a succubus (or other extremely beautiful demon/devil/temptress), works out just a little too well.

Sorry my timezone is Asian so if I seem a bit slow on certain times it's because I'm asleep. Things on Aon are fine. If you want to utter the necromonicon wrongly, that's fine, but we can say instead that you attracted unwanted influence and in order to get some sleep(you kept seeing those things), you decided to make a bargain with one well versed in occult matters.
6 str 19 cha is fine. Having too low str... You never know when shadows are lurking. And also the lower your strength, the more likely I'm going to audit you for carrying weight
Natural finesse is good to go. The mod doesn't give that many humanoid type opponents per se except for disciples of great old ones.
Kitsune would more often face discrimination in Golarion rather then people turning them into pelts. They're still humanoid after all. It's quite scary to think of people hunting varana, Kitsune and all those fluffy critters as abominations.
I'll write a backstory. The one I have in mind depends on these Fox Hunters being implausible.
And if you don't like it, there's always misreading the Necronomicon.
I would like to see if anymore are joining before I think on where to insert people (will be unexplored areas of Asylum) and get things started again.
Mort, I had reached out to another player but unfortunately he is not able to join us, so from my end for now we have VV ;)
Apologies for only joining the character considerations debate now, but the holidays were hectic, and coming back to work today is not helping.
Anyway, without wanting to throw any sand into the gears, but taking into consideration my list of what I think our group may need (some posts further up), I think we could perhaps benefit from a Recruitment post nonetheless before proceeding with a final concept from VV.
Because if a cool enough Arcane submission comes along, maybe it would maybe give VV an option to play the Rogue UC Carnivalist he felt inclined to, since in fact we could use a scout character :P?
Dunno, I am just throwing it out there - in any case I am fine as it is, and Bardic Performance will do wonders for Garrosh's archery :D

I'm more into the bard path at this point. Here's the backstory. (Oh, and she can scout and use scent+survival to track.)
A pinch at the neck. A caress. The chord is repeated. The third is different. The instrumental has the crowd enraptured. The men's eyes are all on the vulpine maiden's lips. She sings,
"I've a cute little heart... yet to break in
I'm a sweet little... loveless maiden
"Do you want to take me home?
Will you do me no harm?
I've got to be all yours... all yours
"This," she whispers seductively, "Foxy Lady..."
And it's only through sheer will that Hanako completes the line, for at the utterance of the syllable fox, she remembers--the funny hats, the khaki shorts, the curly moustaches--these men are "Fox Hunters!"
Hanako now sees herself coming up on a scene: herself, eight years old, curled upon Mother's lap! Mother gets up from her rocker and screams, echoing Father's words. "Fox Hunters!"
The child does not understand. Who are these men? What are these things they carry? These boom-sticks? One is pointed at mother. It booms a hole in the wall. Father's katana flashes and the boom-stick is on the floor, still gripped by severed forearms. Many men lie art Father's feet, missing heads, limbs, or both.
Mother shouts, "the burrows!" and takes the shape of a fox. Hanako takes this as her cue to flee, and does so in her diminutive fox form! Boom-sticks cause cones of dirt to burst inches from Mother's tail, but the two vixens are too swift and too small to die so easily. And the burrow is now within paws' reach...!
But a BOOM stills the air. It stills Mother's escape. Her vulpine eyes look back, and Hanako does as Mother does. She sees Father... on his knees... a red splotch on his chest spreading as he faceplants. Behind him, the monacled man with a smoking boom-stick sneers as the samurai bleeds out.
Many others still live, and they point their boom-sticks at Hanako--
But in a flash, the men are obscured by the hem of Mother's skirt. Her human form towers over the daughter fox. There is time to say "I love you," but Mother chooses her last three words with prudence:
"Don't look back."
The little fox dashes into the burrow, her little paws drumming the earth to the beat of a dozen boom-sticks.
--and yet this flashback does not stop Hanako from dancing as she strums her instrument, for she knows what comes next: Miss Mizzola who taught her all there is about music, among other things, will avenge the Kojima family!
The succubus charges one of the men, goring his throat with a horned headbutt! The arterial spray does not distract the male gaze affixed to the bard's swaying hips, and so the next man falls to a skull-crunching cloven-hoofed kick. Hanako keeps twirling and strumming as the Fox Hunters drop like bloody dominos. The eldest is the only one who lives long enough to scream as the succubus jams her clawed thumbs into his eye sockets until his monacle cracks against his frontal lobe.
Hanako drops her lute. A broken string twangs as the summoned instrument fades from existence. And the little bard girl turns away from her mistress to vomit.
"There, there. Let it all out," Miss Mizzola says. "But as promised, your parents are avenged."
Hanako turns. "Promised? I don't remember..."
"You suppressed you memories, dear. The Fox Hunters killed your parents. I killed them. Now, we live happily ever after."
Hanako tries to remember... and she does. She has another flashback, only... in this version, Miss Mizzola is the one with eight-year-old Hanako in her lap, leading her to the burrows as men try swatting the little fox with BROOM-sticks!
"Broom-sticks?" Hanako asks the succubus. "Why do I remember it differently?"
The succubus looks annoyed. "You misheard me the first time. Look, sweetie. I'm tired of wasting all my precious--all my freakin' time. The deal is I avenge your parents' death and you and I rule as succubus and succubus, wife and wife. Well, until next century. Then you join my ex-wife entourage."
Six more succubi come out from back stage. One has a mop and bucket, and begins cleaning Hanako's vomit without having been asked. Another moans, "Do we need to lure more johns here? Or should we change brothels. My guy said there's a rumor the men check into this place, but never check out." She points to the man with the gored throat when she says "my guy."
Miss Mizzola says, "We'll get a new place by next full moon. Oh, and we need a new monacle."
One ex reaches into her purse, which has several monacles in it. "Done," she says as she hands a monacle to Miss Mizzola.
Hanako, seeing this exchange, does all in her power not to barf again. "Wait... so these are not even the men who murdered my...?"
"Oh please," Miss Mizzola says, "What kind of a dick kills a kitsune child for kicks? Your mom died birthing you, and your dad... you don't wanna know. Point is, you gotta be all mine--ALL mine, Foxy Lady. And you've been of age for over a year. So do I memory-wipe you a-friggin-gain? Or can we just consummate our relationship without me having to kill a bunch of middle-aged dude-bros?"
"What is a... dude-bro?"
One ex-wife glares at Hanako, then at Miss Mizzola. "You dumped me for this clueless moron?"
Hanako says, "How dare you, you, you... witch-with-a-B!"
"Seriously?" says another ex-wife. "Are you really so pristine a maiden you can't even swear?"
Another ex warns her, "Miss Mizzola doesn't need your words. She needs action, and you better give her what she wants or you'll end up as a wretch-with-a-D."
Hanako is even more confused now. "A dretch?"
Miss Mizzola gently explains, "It's the lowest form of demon, my sweet. Too low even for you, even when you refuse me for the hundredth time. That's fine, however. Two of my lovely exes here have played hard-to-get longer than you. Longer than they can remember. But I'm afraid you've lived among foxes for too long, so I need to try a new tactic. But first, a punishment for your refusal to be deflowered."
Miss Mizzola releases pink petals from a cherry blossom into Hanako's hair. Within seconds, a flowering lattice is entwined in the maiden's hair.
"Since you refuse to be de-flowered, I have you flowered instead!"
The vomit-mopping ex says, "What kind of punishment is that? Why not make her clean her fishy puke! Girl, the f~*& did you eat today?!"
"I... forgot," Hanako replies.
"Of course you did," Miss Mizzola says in a tone that is not angry. No. Not angry at atll. "My dear bride-to-be, the flowering marks your virginity. You will remain pure for me. And you will go to another place where you will see, others are not as kind as me. Then you will come crawling back, kissing my hooves, begging for me to kiss you back."
"But Mother," Hanako says to Miss Mizzola, her overwritten memory adding confusion a conversation the girl can barely comprehend, "you kiss my cheek every night before I sleep..."
And the next thing Hanako knows, her eyes flutter open. And she has no idea where the heck-with-a-double-L she is!
I'm more into the bard path at this point. Here's the backstory. (Oh, and she can scout and use scent+survival to track.)
Hah! Garrosh can scout WITHOUT scent! :D
Glad you got a kick out of it! So neither parent was murdered, and with all the memory-implants and -wipes, Hanako doesn't know what she agreed to (or whether her father is, in fact, alive for that matter), but she somehow feels responsible for the death of perhaps around a thousand men who all look like Col. Mustard.
I'll add a typo-free version to my profile when I can.
• The Blues Brothers (mention of a hooker named Minnie Mizzola before the Cab Calloway performance of Minnie the Moocher)
• Hotel California ("check in / don't check out" ...didn't google the lyrics, don't know 'em, and in fact I only thought of the song at all because of the weird cover in The Big Lebowski, which was on my mind because I imagine Miss Mizzola talks like Maude Lebowski)
• Evil Dead: Army of Darkness (boom-sticks are manufactured in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and available at S-Mart)
Oh... scent is fox form only. Also, +8 size bonus to stealth due to her tininess.
The typo-free version of my backstory is now in my avatar’s profile.
Also, part of my preference for Bard vs. Carnivalist is that Carnivalist is meant for animal familiars. You even use Animal Handling in place of Perform. So it doesn’t work for the flowery hair thing.
Seeing how the Bard is GM-approved, I’d like to stick to her current build. Do I purchase 3000g of stuff? (Light stuff!)
Shopping done! Not sure if I need one bandolier to hold my coins, so I bought two. I have a goblet in one, meaning I’m out of storage space if money uses one storage space.
Better than anyone but her carries add’l stuff, as this character literally holds one-tenth the weight of my Vermilion Vixen, who can carry all her gear and a grown man as a light load! I’m not used to counting the pounds. (A real life problem, too?)
Anyway, I audited weight and found the lightest light armor I can get—with 4 AC!
• MW Short Bow (2 lbs / 330 gp)
• +1 Spider Silk (4 lbs / 1000 gp + 1000 gp)
• Sleeves of Many Garments (1 lb / 200 gp)
• Bandolier x2 (1 gp)
• Quiver w/ 20 Arrows (3 lbs. / 1 gp)
• Goblet of Quenching (1 lb. / 180 gp)
Yep, she is solid at the moment.
Nevermind she can be intangible at the moment.
You can post whether Ann gets hugged or not. It doesn’t have to be goofy.
(I deleted the spoiler, and will react afterward, now that I know either outcome is possible.)
Oh... speaking of Hanako’s arrows:
My Lv.1 spell list is, I believe, exactly as I posted on this thread before appearing in-game.
However, for my finalized profile, I did swap out two Lv.0s so I can Mend used arrows and Mage Hand them to me, if need be. (Prestidigitation would clean the blood off.)
So the spells I don’t know are Detect Fiendish Presence (wasted on me—I’d never think to cast it) and Light (which is probably not the best choice for a stealthy caster who could eventually have access to darkvision).
If Mend doesn’t work on arrows, that’s fine. I checked these boards and still can’t tell. Several threads have people debating the official rule, each side claiming the other misinterpreted the official rule. Other GMs have handwaved retrieved arrows being usable, but I imagine arrows can only take so much abuse.
I realize arrows are cheap, but I thought an easily-encumbered character might want to limit herself to one quiver, and do all in her power to keep that quiver full.
Question. Possibly a dumb one.
Biting Words:Your voice becomes suffused with magic so that you can harm your opponents with but a word. As a standard action, you can target one opponent within 30 feet with a ranged touch attack by speaking to it, dealing an amount of damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength or Charisma modifier, whichever is higher. The damage dealt is bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage and can be reduced by damage reduction. Each attack you make reduces the spell’s remaining duration by 1 minute. If an attack reduces the remaining duration to 0 minutes or less, the spell ends after the attack resolves.
So my damage is d6+4, but how about my d20? Do I use DEX because it's a range touch attack, or do I use CHA because I'm using my voice?
And if CHA, is that BAB+CHA or 1/2 caster level +CHA?
I'm sure this is obvious to everyone but me. I normally play melee characters and defensive casters. I didn't even know Bards could heal until after I looked up spells I wanted, since no Bard PC in any party I've been in knew cure spells. (Personally, I love being a spontaneous caster with healing!)
I believe it is always Dex for ranged touch attacks. I have one bard and that's what we use (plus I always have a cure spell as well, I think in a crew like ours with no dedicated healers it is an even better choice).
Mending won't work on arrows because they go straight to destroyed as opposed to damaged. You may change the cantrip if you wish.
Okay. Open/Close Door.
...and if I can ditch Mage Hand (also meant for arrow retrieval), I'll take Light.
Dex to attack, charisma for damage modifier.
Okay. That's how I have it in my profile, but thought I should check and make sure.
On second thought, I’ll just reverse the swap (Mending for Light) and keep Mage Hand.
There may be fun (and useful) ways to combine Prestidigitation, Mage Hand and Light, so no buyer’s remorse.
just to note, while Piotr has been checking for traps and such at all the doors (since he is in first) he is rather crap at it with a +0. He had been running off his sister's instincts (though her rebirth has dulled her senses significantly (not many skill points for spirit companions)
@Piotr, I took this OoC note to mean you wanted someone with a Perception bonus to help search. Let me know if I'm mistaken.
Hanako's intent is to be helpful, not a showoff.
Well... the dance-acro bit when Apep asked her how she balances on two legs—*that* was totally showing off. But even then, it was to relieve tension with the ratlings who feared she would eat them.
That is exactly what I was suggesting. :)
Piotr and Ann both suck at perception. I didn't think you were showing off at all and was quite appreciative of the good roll. Ann just started helping to move the opening of the drawers along.
For the record, I was gonna quote lyrics from a song by The Cure, but that just felt cheap in an immersion-killy way. And plus, it is infinity times more fun to make up lyrics as I post. I don't know why I went seven years PbP'ing without playing a bard before.
"blood squirts" was a nice touch :)
I have played Bards more than once - funnily enough only one of them ever rhymed or played an instrument :D
In one of the games I'm running, I have a village of mermaids who communicate solely through song. Their speech needs to rhyme, and I have the poetry skills of a 7th grader. It's a great idea, but I'll be so relieved when it's over.
|1 person marked this as a favorite.|
NOOOOOO it can never be over! We will visit the mermaids every chance we can get and have long roleplaying sessions with them!
Mermaids. The only other race that might communicate like that would be Dwarves.
Smash the bottles and burn the corks!
I meant (jokingly) shoulda kicked because I rolled a natural 20 (18 might be enough for an average door). But no, I will save door kicking for my other game.
My Vermilion Vixen escaped prison with a kick. Her bonuses were +5 STR and +2 to door-breaking from Muscle of the Society. Even a natural 20 would fail (DC28), but the GM allowed me to use Pugnacious’ effective size bonus for the +4 to break DC. This brought my bonus to +11 for 1 round only. I rolled a nat.17.
Of course, my door-kicker thinks she’s a superheroine. Her five memories are from a comic book she read. Hanako is more a scared kid trying to act brave by being like the heroes (many of which are male) that she played in her musicals.
Would be hilarious to get all pumped up, kinda like 'Let's go! Let's go!', then kicking it, and the door not budging an inch :)
Been there; done that.
Link leads to four-post exchange. Just above linked post: GM mention of break DC.
In game, my character finds her failure to break a door embarrassing.
OoC, I find my typo(s) embarrassing.
I have a Wrath of the Righteous game running strong at level 12/Mythic 5, but we have been struggling to find an Arcane character who will stick with the game, since our original Wizard left a long time ago.
We've had a replacement (or two, not 100% sure), but that replacement is also gone now - at the moment group consists of:
- And a Zen Archer/Inquisitor/Champion/Archmage (me, of course :D)
Let me know if any of you would consider joining us (this includes you Mort, even though I know you usually don't game anymore) - the GM is SOLID, and he has stuck with the game ever since day one without faltering.
For healing, I am seriously considering this feat: Contingent Spell
Additionally, I might want to start taking Masterpieces.
Given the house rule that converts durations to # of encounters, does this mean Triple a Time would last for 3 encounters? (+10’ speed for 10 min.)
On the topic of diseases, I do want to point out that I have Divine Health, which should protect me from disease.
