A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 1–5.

“On Sharrowsmith’s Trail” is the first scenario in the three-part Scions of the Sky Key campaign arc. It is followed by Pathfinder Society Scenario #6–14: Scions of the Sky Key, Part 2: “Kaava Quarry” and Pathfinder Society Scenario #6–16: Scions of the Sky Key, Part 3: “The Golden Guardian.” All three chapters are intended to be played in order.

I will be hosting the other 2 parts after this one, with recruiting preference given to those who play the earlier parts!

As you arrive in town you notice a crazy person standing on a crate in the town square, shouting nonsense at townsfolk who either pass by pretending not to notice him, or heckle him with words and sometimes fruit.

...and that is why we must prepare! Listen, my good people, I am trying to save you. You do not know the destruction that will come when He/It arrives to devour all. We only have 10,000 years to prepare before She/It/They arrives. You, sir! Have you any knowledge of the strange magick known as "Tekk-Gnoll-O-Gee"? Do you know any Gnolls personally? You, sir! Have you heard of something called a "new clear bomb"? No? The courtesy of a response is the polite thing to do, you know...well, that was a response, but a very rude one. Have a nice day, sir, you and your middle finger. You, ma'am! Have you heard the Bad News about It/He/They?...

You feel sorry for him, until he waves at you and you realize that he is part of your team.

A tall and scrawny man walks confidently down the street, an ornate rapier jangling at his hip. Among the streets of Absalom, this man’s grooming and lifestyle makes him stick out like a sore thumb. Upon finding the screaming beggar in the middle of the street, he stops for a moment to listen—almost entranced by the old man’s words.

A well-to-do Pathfinder agent approaches The Herald, interrupting his raucous doomsaying and handing the man his assignment papers. In tow is another Pathfinder, holding the same pile of papers. Slowly but surely he hands each of you your assignment, thanks you for your time, and leaves. In this group of papers, you find detailed instructions to Sharrowsmith's Exports, a walled trade compound on the northern edge of Nantambu in the Mwangi Expanse, along with a boarding pass for a ship headed to the area. Also in the pack is a writ, declaring assistance on a missing person's case, signed by an ally of the Pathfinder Society known as Aya Allahe. You all gather what belongings you deem necessary for the area, and hop on the boat the following morning.

Upon arrival, you are escorted into a back room where a beautiful dark-skinned woman with golden features looks upon you, examining your stature and immediately assuming (thankfully correctly) your allegiance to the society. "I wish I had more to offer," Allahe apologizes before even presenting what information she has.

“Nieford Sharrowsmith never truly retired from being a Pathfinder, even after he started this business. I think, in his mind, he was still the young adventurer that hiked through jungles and fought off troglodyte tribes. Sharrowsmith’s attitude changed over the last few months—I think he was concerned for his legacy and how history would remember him. Would it be for his discoveries or for the export business that dominated his later years? The answer, I fear, was unpalatable.

“It was no surprise when he packed up and left on an expedition. But that was months ago, and neither the Society nor I have heard from him since. Sharrowsmith has never left for this long without leaving some word as to his status or sending rather demanding missives about business decisions while he was waist-deep in some jungle bog. When my own contacts failed to turn up any useful information, I had no recourse but to go through his private notes.” Allahe motions to the mess of documents scattered about the office.

“What caught my eye was this translated rubbing. It appears to be the most recent piece of a very large puzzle Sharrowsmith was researching and indicated that he may be somewhere in the Bandu Hills. Traders from Fort Bandu have confirmed that he paid the garrison a visit, but that’s where my trail ran cold. Something happened out there, and Praetor Sylien—Fort Bandu’s commander—refuses to correspond with me on the matter despite knowing how close Nieford and I are. All I received in response was that Nieford had ‘done enough damage for one lifetime,’ and that if I wanted to discuss the matter further I would need to go to Fort Bandu in person.” Exasperatedly, Allahe runs a hand across her forehead and turns her distant stare out the window. “I cannot shutter the business and travel hundreds of miles on the off chance that the praetor can help; the company would fall apart. I’m hoping that you will be able to go in my stead, speak with the praetor personally to learn what has befallen Sharrowsmith and help him return.”

A picture of Aya Allahe, along with the rubbing appear in the third slide of the slides, linked at the top of the page and here!

Does anyone know of a mountain named "Nakyuk"? It doesn't sound like any mountain I've ever heard of, and last I checked, I'm a human.

He looks to Ferdrin.

I am still human, correct? Sometimes I have these dreams where I crawl inside my wagon, which is pulled neither by horses nor by magic, and become part of it while I steer it at great speed with a tiny wheel in my hands, along great roads wide enough for many wagons at once. I'm not a wagon, am I?

Hell's Vengeance - Slides

The Herald's Knowledge Geography:
You know of no mountain by that name.

"The Fort is at least a week away," Allahe responds to Orzworth, "that is, if you make it there alive. It's a dangerous place. This is true of much of the Expanse, yes, but the Bandu Hills have a dozen ways to kill before even accounting for living creatures. Heat, dehydration, landslides, poisonous plants, carnivorous plants, and so on. Unfortunately, the place is sick with riches like diamonds, gold, and silver -- an embarrassment of wealth that only attracts more dangerous occupants. I am surprised that Sharrosmith didn't settle down there, to be honest."

She then turns her attention to Jerrid, a hint of worry in her eye, "That's what I assume. I know Praetor Sylien only by his reputation. The grandson of an old elven explorer, he's served the garrison for decades, though I hear he's mostly retired now. My business associates say his is a fair and very pragmatic man, one who respects hard facts and truth. His being dismissive of my request seemed rather uncharacteristic."

She then, lastly, turns to Herald, intrigued enough by what he's saying, but not quite enough to respond. Her gaze returns to the window, worrying yet again.

At this point, you may all roll a Knowledge(geography) check to obtain the following information.

DC 10+:
Thanks to the rocky terrain and bright sun, the daytime temperature of the Bandu Hills can sometimes reaches lethal extremes. Fort Bandu is the only major settlement for miles, and serves to protect the prospectors in the region.

DC 15+:
Regional threats include the often-hostile Bandu tribes, ghouls and groups of kobolds, goblins, and hobgoblins. One of the highest points in the Bandu Hills is Mount Nakyuk, famed for the veins of gold under it several centuries ago.

DC 20+:
Stories of ghoul activity in the Bandu Hills also include confused accounts of ghoul-like creatures that scholars call festrogs -- horrific flesh-eating undead that walk upright but run on all fours.

You may all also roll a Knowledge(local) or Profession(merchant or miner) to obtain the following information.

DC 10+:
The Bandu Hills remain rich in gold, silver, and gems, despite several centuries of colonial mining. Prospectors arrive from throughout the Inner Sea region to seek their fortune. The local Mwangi tribes often retaliate violently.

DC 15+:
Most of the larger mining operations belong to the Deeptreasure Mining Company, which has dominated the local industry for nearly three centuries. Their onetime competitors, the Gold Crown Company, are now better known for shipping and export services.

DC 20+:
Deeptreasure agents are always on the lookout for independent miners, whom they bully away from promising claims. A Deeptreasure representative in Fort Bandu is offering a bounty for information regarding any promising unoccupied (or ill-defended) mines.

Ferdrin sighs at his companion, resigned that he's likely not helping Allahe's mood.

Yes Herald, you are still a human. I also do not know this mountain.

He attempts to turn a warm, sympathetic look towards her for re-assurance. Yes, of course we will check in on your friend. Pathfinders have to look out for one another.

He ponders the situation thoughtfully for a moment, trying to add up the facts so far. Is there anything that you know about Sharrosmith's tendencies that you can imagine would get him in trouble with one such as Praetor Sylien? Is this wholly unexpected, or does this happen often and perhaps he finally ran across the wrong "sheriff". I used to get into a lot of trouble at the Arcanarium and I know how it is getting by on non-conforming curiosity until I ran into the wrong... administrators. The journey South proves uneventful. The society, not wanting everybody to walk when there's possibly a life on the line, secured a route to Fort Bandu via river. You travel by boat down the Vanji River, and after a day or so switch to paddling up the Little Vanji and Dzimmi Rivers by canoe. Thankfully, the area proves hospitable enough, and no uses of Endure Elements are required due to your ever-close proximity to these rivers. After some time of paddling, you finally wind through several of the lower Bandu Hills through a pass to Fort Bandu, but having been given directions, you know you all can take a plunge in the river before heading out and still be damp by the time you make it to the Fort.

The fort is a small frontier settlement surrounded by high stone walls located on the northern edge of Sargava. Within the fort's walls, dozens of mining companies maintain outposts out of pavilion tents, hiring laborers and purchasing necessary supplies brought in by merchants from the north, south, and west. The fort holds a garrison of 150 soldiers, who maintain a balance of defense of the frontier and protection for the miners and traders within its walls.

When you arrive, the atmosphere is noticeably tense. Cold stares and accusing looks greet the group. This part here is a plot hole in the story. Go along with it. There's not much else that can be done for the story. it doesn't progress unless the town openly knows you're Pathfinders. Sorry. Merchants refuse to open their stalls to Pathfinders and lay blame on the Pathfinder Society for the "troubles of late," though these traders are fairly tight-lipped in sharing details.

Getting an audience with Praetor Sylien is simple enough. You simply arrive at the garrison and mention Aya Allahe, and a member of the garrison escorts you to the praetor's office, a modest and utilitarian space comprised of several tables and a handful of half-stocked bookshelves. A war table featuring a map of the Bandu Hills region sits prominently in the center of the room, and three tall windows nearby let in a great deal of natural light.

Praetor Sylien (pictured in slide 4 of the slides) is in mid-conversation with a lanky Garundi man (Also pictured in slide 4 of the slides) in fine attire. Their conversation stops abruptly, and the praetor's guest disdainfully glares at the latest arrivals. "Pathfinders," the guest scoffs. "I shouldn't be surprised. Only your organization would have the gall to so brazenly show its face when you've already caused so much damage."

Praetor Sylien interrupts his guest. "Pathfinders," the praetor's voice lacks the contempt of his guest, as if trying to subtly apologize for his tone. "This is Amersanus Valacosti of the Aspis Consortium. DUN DUN DUN!! We've been discussing the troubles Fort Bandu has faced of late--troubles caused by your organization. I was unwilling to disclose the details to Mistress Allahe by courier, but now that you have arrived, I feel it pertinent to explain the nature of Fort Bandu's...misgivings. Venture-Captain Sharrowsmith came through here some months ago, gathering supplies and information before setting of on an expedition into the hills. There, he roused the local kobold tribes and angered them enough that they now actively raid our settlements and mining operations.

"Amersanus Valacosti and I were discussing how the Aspis Consortium may be able to help repair the damage your Society has inflicted on the people of Fort Bandu. Now that you've arrived, perhaps we can have a more balanced mediation. Your Pathfinder Society has a damaged reputation here in the Bandu Hills, so I ask you state your business and why you think I should allow you to even so much as stay within the fort's walls. What knowledge do you have of this land and its people that could prevent this situation from deteriorating further? I will only entertain questions regarding Sharroswmith once I'm assured that providing you information will not further endanger my charges."

”Come now, my dear...uh....Herald, I’m sure Valacosti and the Praetor are well aware of the Pathfinder-Aspis feud, but we are not at one another’s blades, we are merely having a business proposition; there is no need for name-calling.”

Jerrid looks at the Praetor with pity in his eyes and sighs. "I cannot count how many times I have seen leaders or various settlements getting duped by the Aspis. You say that Sharrowsmith riled up the local kobolds. Are you so sure of that, perhaps someone closer to you at the moment might be responsible." He looks accusingly at Valacosti.

Valacosti waits patiently for Jerrid to finish his statement before rebutting. "Ha! You Pathfinders go as you please, do as you please, and take as you please, as your own Captain Sharrowsmith did here."

"Enough, Amersanus. Let them explain themselves," interrupts the praetor, obviously peeved by the sudden tension in the room. "I do understand the Aspis Consortium has a dubious past, at best, but then again, so does your organization to some eyes. My eyes see two organizations, one no better than the other. One seems to have caused this raucous, the other is offering solutions. I'll have you know Asmersanus speaks for the latter, so you are in no position to throw blame."

Hoping that quells the tensions in the room a little, the Praetor continues, "I see this man," he gestures to Malthus, "knows a bit about our land. Tell me, sir, what do you know that could help?"

It'll take a Knowledge (geography, local, or nature) or Survival check to demonstrate your familiarity with the area. You've received a bonus for mentioning something learned earlier in this adventure.

"My apologies, Praetor, but as you can see, this feud runs very deep, though," Malthus glars at Valacosti. "I was expecting far more professionalism from an international business organization, rather than resorting to petty personal attacks like those that my companions have so...eloquently demonstrated--you had the chance to appear more mature than we and you frankly blew it. I assure you, Praetor, from here on personal and professional matters will be kept separated," Malthus's glare falls on Jerrid. "From both sides, I would hope."

In this specific situation, Malthus won't accept an aid from anyone who flavors their aid as a personal attack against Valacosti, as that's completely against what Malthus is trying to do right now.

"Now, as for your question, Praetor--and I hope you will excuse my relative ignorance on local matters--but perhaps you could open up the mining to more than just Deeptreasure Mining, so that should such an event occur then the perpetrators would be facing the organized wrath of more than a single organization. Additionally--while unconventional--have you thought about making peace with the kobolds? After all, you cannot judge someone based solely on their skin--er, scales."

Valacosti grows increasingly incensed as you explain your case. "Sharrowsmith professed an intimate understanding of the region and its delicate balance of power as well, and behold the results: dozens dead, dozens more missing, kobolds attacking our mining operations, and people living in fear of the next raid. Praetor, with all due respect, you cannot allow these Pathfinders to exacerbate an already delicate situation."

The praetor remains patient. "Amersanus makes a good point. Sharrowsmith was a well-read and knowledgeable man, yet he disappeared in these jungles and caused damage we're only beginning to feel the impact of thanks to the local kobold tribes. How is your expedition different? Do you have the necessary strength to survive in this environment where so many others cannot? Show me that those weapons and spellbooks you carry are not just for show."

Relevant checks include a caster level check (you still need to create a reason to roll one), a combat maneuver check, or a Spellcraft check to display your prowess. This MUST be roll-played, as several modifiers come out of how you accomplish your task.

A combat maneuver specifically? Odd, but I can work with that. I’m just gonna leave this here to explain why my bonus will be inconsistent with my general CMB.

Malthus bows deeply towards Praetor Sylien.

”Thank you, sir. We of the Society understand that there are always bad seeds among us—there was that Shadow Lodge business that occurred years ago, after all—but the bad seeds are outliers among an organization. We will not disappoint.”

Without warning, Malthus gracefully advances upon Valacosti, pulling out his beloved rapier as he does so, and sweeps at the Aspis agent’s legs using the blunt of his blade.

”My apologies, Amersanus. I hope you didn’t mind that I used you as a practice dummy—we are technically rivals, after all!”

“Is this supposed to make an impression?” Valacosti is quick to dismiss the display of power, brushing off his cloak as he stands. He almost spits in the face of Malthus (during the full Nelson, for effect), but refrains from doing so in present company. “If you think this situation can be solved at the point of a rapier, the hands of a brute, or by brandishing some weather wizardry, you’re as ignorant as your predecessor. These Pathfinders will rush headlong into the jungle and slaughter the kobold tribe, creating a power vacuum among the other tribes and only worsen this disaster.”

Again, the praetor tries to remain impartial, though it is clear his patience is waning. “Once more I find myself seeing reason in Valacosti’ words. Strength of arms and magic is all well and good, but this is a situation that also requires a certain amount of finesse. How do I know I trust you to handle this situation with a level head and a delicate touch when necessary?”

With all due respect, Praetor Sylien, I have been keeping the peace between my comrades and Mr. Valacosti here since we first arrived--or at least attempting to--and frankly, the fact that this room is not currently a battleground is proof enough that the Society is capable of more than just bloodshed."

Visibly frustrated, Valacosti appeals one last time to Sylien. "Praetor. I implore you, send these Pathfinders back to where they came from. This is neither the place nor the time for their presence. For the sake of the people of Fort Bandu, do not let them worsen this situation."

With reluctance, the praetor acknowledges you with a slow nod. Then, after a brief glance to Valacosti, he appears ready to make his decision.

Praetor Sylien's trust in the society seems to falter at Malthus' words. Luckily, the words of the Herald were able to raise the lawman's spirits. With a reserved sigh, the praetor relents. “As the Pathfinders are responsible for getting us into this mess, I see it fitting that we give them the chance to remedy the situation. I’m putting my faith in you, and the lives of the people in Fort Bandu. I pray that you don’t betray that trust, for the consequences could be quite dire for all who call this home.”

“Most unfortunate,” Valacosti observes with disappointment that gives way to menacing resolve. “I believe you are making a grave mistake by placing any faith in these glorified tomb robbers, praetor. Once they fail, remember that the Aspis Consortium has extended a generous offer of aid in this troubling time. One can only hope that this Pathfinder experiment does not exacerbate the situation further and necessitate our renegotiating the terms.” Valacosti dismisses himself from the room, ensuring to bump into Malthus on his way out. "Hope you don't screw this up!" he jeers mockingly as he leaves. He shuts the door with a loud thud that shakes a book off the nearby shelf.

It hits the ground as the Praetor claps once. "Well then. I advise you, instead of charging directly into a cave of Kobolds, do what you can to find your leader. If you come across any kobolds along the way, I trust you'll use your best judgement to placate them. Don't let your desire for peace get you killed, though. I've lost a few good men that way.

"Pathfinder Venture-Captain Sharrowsmith was last seen at a Gold Crown mining operation approximately 20 miles away." He pulls out a map from the drawer of his desk, carefully unfurling it and pointing to the spot. "That one. That was the last place any of my scouts saw the man. We anticipate he went, and I advise you go, this route," he says as he traces his finger along the map, carefully avoiding close proximity to any lakes, cliffs, or dense rock fields marked therein. "Moving during the day is dangerous, though. I assume you're all well acquainted with the climate here. It's hot. Quite hot. Since you're on official state business, I'll provide you a small bit of aid." He reaches into another drawer of his desk and pulls out a singular Potion of Endure Elements. "This here will make you completely immune to the heat for a bit. You may use it if any of you are feeling particularly faint. I do not expect it back."

"Though moving during the day has its negatives, the landscape is remarkably similar, so navigating by moonlight proves even trickier for outsiders. That, combined with the nocturnal predators around here, is why many move during the day even through the heat. Depending on your group's aptitude, I'd advise either way.

"So, when can I expect you to depart? Now? Or later this evening?"
