"Sounds like a plan. If we have the opportunity, I'd definitely like to pick up flowers for the memorial - even if that's not as common anymore."

Thanking the acolytes as you leave the Temple you make your way to the Harrowstone Memorial. The road to the memorial is lined with small farm lands and little cottages.

As you are about to cross the bridge to the river you come across a group of five little girls dressed in shawls and dresses playing a skipping rope game on the side of the road. Each of the girls takes turns jumping in the rope while singing two lines of a rather disturbing song.

"Put her body on the bed.
Take a knife and lop her head.
Watch the blood come out the pipe.
Feeds the stirge, so nice and ripe.
Drops of red so sparkly bright.
Splatters spell her name just right.
With a hammer killed his wife.
Now he wants to claim your life.
Tricksy father tells a lie.
Listen close or you will die."

Sisu pulls out her journal and starts writing down the lyrics as they approach, mumbling to herself. "That's a very odd song. A little more morbid than you usually hear."

Speaking quietly to the group so as not to disturb the girls, "Children tend to not warm up to me too much on account of my appearance. Could one of you ask them about that song? I'd like to find out if it's local in order to add it to my notes about this increasingly interesting place."

Because I'm way too much like my character and keep notes on everything...I just noticed something that might not be a coincidence.

Looking through her journal, Sisu thinks she might be starting to make connections. "Our research on Harrowstone showed that five very well known criminals had just been put there in preparation for execution when the fire happened." She gestures towards the children. "Listen to the song. 10 lines, in pairs, at first I thought it was all one story. Look at it again though. First couplet references a knife, whereas the second mentions a pipe and the fourth a hammer. The third and fifth aren't as obvious, but I think this is speaking of 5 separate horrible events or people. I bet this song references the killers that were in Harrowstone." She continues to jot down ideas. "Things are starting to tie together a bit, or maybe I'm just looking for connections that aren't there...."

@GM - Do we know how long ago the fire was? I went looking back through the research we did and didn't see it there. Was curious if it was recent or back in the past.

Lots of them are. I read once that Mary Mary Quite Contrary is about Queen Mary I's penchant to torture and kill people, and also mocks her for her multiple miscarriages. (how does your garden grow) Kids sing creepy things

Yeah kids song/rhymes are often creepy and disturbing. Also Kendra let you all know that the fire was in 4661 and the current year is 4718, so it was 57 years ago.

As soon as you start to talk to the children they stop playing and stand there quietly. A number of them push, what seems to be the oldest among them forward to talk to you. "Our parents say we aint suppos' ta talk ta strangers.." she looks around nervously to see if any adults are around."buuut you played ya flute really nice. And for tha jumpin' song, well us kids here have been singin' it FOREVER, but its jus' a silly song. Oh no! I think my mom is coming...lets go everyone!!" The whole group of them runs off towards a barn screaming and laughing.

As you make your way down the path towards the memorial you can see the looming ruins of Harrowstone on a nearby hill. at the end of the road you come across a 25-foot-tall, moss covered stone statue that is over looking the river. It depicts a proud, muscular human man dressed in leathers and wielding a truncheon. There is a plaque bearing the name of Warden Hawkran and then 25 other names-the guards who died in the fire of 4661. However some of the plaque and the base of the statue is covered in blood and a large letter V.

Leaving the others to pay their respects/place flowers as intended, Sisu is immediately intrigued by the 'crime scene' and jumps right into it.

"That's a bit disturbing. I wonder what the V is for?"

Sisu looks around to see if there are any authority figures here. If there are, she'll go ask them about the situation and ask for permission to check out the scene.
If she gets permission, or if there is no-one from the Sheriff's office present, she'll investigate the blood herself and look around for any signs of footprints or other clues that might show what happened.

What sucks is that as a player I'm almost positive there's SO MUCH more to look into here, as well as with the hidden cache in the Restlands...but Sisu isn't the type to railroad the group into changing plans on so little evidence, so they'll probably have to wait for another day. Sisu I totally understand where you are coming from!!

With all of you looking and inspecting the Memorial you are able to make out that the last name listed is Vesorianna, but none of your research thus far has mentioned any names other than Warden Hawkran.

Leaving the memorial, for now you all make your way towards the looming burnt ruins of Harrowstone. walking along a partially overgrown track from the southern edge of town, you wind up around the base of the hill and back up along the southern slope. Once at the top of the hill you find a large gap in the surrounding ivy covered wall of the prison and can see the stark central structure through it.

You are currently at R1 the courtyard Tower Doors. Here is the link for the map Map of Harrowstone

A sagging wood and metal gate set between a pair of stone guard towers once barred entrance into Harrowstone, but the gates now hang negligently open, creaking softly in what wind touches the ruined bars.

If there was a connection between the name that looked like a V and the blood on the memorial it certainly didnt connect to her at the moment. Chellian was certainly glad to be back on the move, even if it was to go to the horrible site of Harrowstone. This close to the building she found herself more closely paying attention to her surroundings. . . Well until she saw an interesting looking bug. Then she watched it more than paying attention to anything else.

I perceive... that i will be no help here :P

This place seems rather ominous, but I guess a burnt out ruin probably would.

While Sisu takes a minute to create an extract of heightened awareness,
She notices Chellian next to her. "I am also interested in entymology. If you'd like to go through my notes on unusual instincts we can chat tonight. I could also capture that specimen if you'd like so that you can study it more at your leisure."

After creating (but not yet taking) the extract, she steps through the gate to get a better look at the main building, and looks around for anything odd that might catch her eye.

Sisu walks further through the gate, looking around. "This place would have looked quite nice before the fire. You don't normally see a prison with such beautiful architecture."

Glancing back at Malakos, "Oh, you're funny! It's been closed since the fire. I wish I could be as quick with wit as you." She is fascinated enough with the prison that she is completely oblivious to the group's prevailing mood. She begins walking away from the rest of them towards the small outbuilding to the left of the main building's gate.

Sisu as you walk through the sagging and rotten main gate into the Harrowstone courtyard you suddenly feel like the walls are closing in on you and you start to panic that there is no way out. Your breathing becomes labored and you start to cough like you’ve been swallowing smoke. As you gasp for breath, you suddenly feel like your skin is on fire and begin to swat at the flames. After long agonizing minutes the feelings begin to fade.

Sisu stops mid-step and begins to cough and writhe, slapping herself as she stands there. After several minutes (that felt like hours) she draws a deep breath and turns back towards the group.

"Um...that certainly was odd. Suddenly I felt like I was burning." She looks down at herself and carefully inspects her clothing and exposed skin, a little lost for words. "I don't know how to explain it but I do seem to be fine. The feeling has completely passed."

She shakily walks back towards the group, tentatively feeling the mass of scar tissue on her face. "I've felt worse pains before but that was...well...real. Let me take a minute to gather myself and I'll be ready to continue if you want."

I wonder if that was a residual haunting? I've run into them before but always as an observer not a participant. This definitely bears some investigation

"I would also like to revisit the idea of that possible hidden cache in the graveyard. It seems like defense against supernatural forces might be needed, and maybe the Professor did leave some supplies behind there."

She sits down on the ground for a minute with her eyes closed, thinking.

A two-story stone building looms in the center of the prison grounds.. Ivy and moss cling tenaciously to the walls, while above the wooden shingles of the roof are often missing entirely, exposing the wooden rafters of the upper structure to the sky. Here and there, leering stone gargoyles perch on the eaves, once functioning as drainspouts and decorations but now seeming almost to serve a more ominous role of sentinels. Many of these stone decorations have crumbled away and lie in ruined piles on the soggy ground below. Windows in the building's facade are narrow and blocked by grills of rusty iron bars. Stone columns support a slumping wooden balcony over the building's wooden front doors, both of which hang askew and reveal dark glimpses of chambers within.

As you wander around the perimeter of the central building you notice something rather curious. The ivy and grass have been cleared along the edge where the foundation meets the ground along the edges is a series of sinuous runes that have been etched and smeared with blood.

"Hey guys, I found something interesting. Do you mind if I jot down some notes on these runes while you look around?"

Really? Offering Sisu a chance to write something down? Of course she's gonna go for that. (She does speak Varisian)

As opposed to waiting for an answer, Sisu pulls out her journal and starts taking notes. She will continue unless the group asks her to stop.

Knowledge(Arcane) + Inspiration: 1d20 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + 7 + (2) = 15

Does taking the notes mean I can retry the check later on without having to be right here by the runes? Just curious.

"Theses are odd!"

"They look to be Varisian - part of some adjuration and necromantic ritual. This will require further study - perhaps the Professor's library might help. Does anyone know Varisian?"

Relying on the ever studious Sisu to take notes, Niralzi's new knowledge prompts her to be even more cautious and she casts Detect Fiendish Presence.

Scratching his chin, "I'm not really getting anything from these runes, let's take the time to scribe them and we can tackle them later,"

Inwardly he empathically tries to feel if his rat has felt anything or found anything worthwhile, sensing nothing, he'll try to reach out and urge Hannibal to return to him while they wait this next hour.

"We should also look for where the Professor died, he died somewhere around the main building didn't he, crushed by a gargoyle I think it was,"

Malakos continues walking around the edge of the building heading for this left side landing. R6 it looks like

Sisu looks up from copying the runes. "I speak Varisian, what do you need?"
