The Balrog |
Table switch! Okay, no problem.
Maybe someday he'll have his wings, Improved Whip Mastery, and Advanced Weapon Training. For now, Balrog has his whip or sword, Arcane Strike, a bunch of skills, and a bit of bardic performance.
His stinky cheese trick could be Firesight, with smokesticks and the Spark cantrip (because smokesticks actually need to be lit, not just thrown). Haven't used it yet, but will get some smokesticks just in case.
Personality-wise, he's a cocky, hedonistic Calistrian, easily recruited into the Dark Archives by Zarta Dralneen with the most perfunctory of flirtation. Appealing to Balrog's pride or greed are good ways to manipulate him into doing good and noble things. (He's also got a good grasp on gluttony, sloth, wrath, envy, and lust.)
Since I haven't played him at Level 2, I still have the chance to change things. I am considering taking the Mostly Human alternate racial trait so he can benefit from Enlarge Person (the Efreeti Magic alternate racial trait doesn't seem to work on the ifrit himself unless he counts as humanoid). Aesthetically, Mostly Human is all wrong for him. I guess he could use Disguise to look like a 'real' ifrit, or I could just say he's about as ifrit-looking as you can get while still being humanoid type.
Lawmaster Malora |
Yeah, talk about confusing. I've got to try to get removed from that other Assault on Absalom thread I already checked into. Haha.
Well, now I'm here! Still interested in playing. I'll be bringing my Abadaran inquisitor! Oh, yeah!
Gerald Spalding |
I'll be bringing my Battle Host Occultist! I think that class should do pretty well in a Special.
GM Zoomba |
Slide with maps (when they come) and handouts is posted at the top of the campaign and in my profile.
Can each of you also on that second slide add a token for you, as well as fill in your character info and [dice] tags for your Perception and Initiative when you have a chance.
Gerald Spalding |
Craft (Traps): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30 Lol, alright.
I'll get my picture up there tonight.

Gerald Spalding |
Wow, another Occultist! I've only ever seen one other, and here we have two in one game! Fabulous!
Also, let's hope these Discussion thread Nat 20's hold out for our Boons.
GM Zoomba |
Our first combat!
Given the format of PbP, to keep things moving along I am fine with characters acting slightly out of exact initiative order as long as their in the same 'block' (all going before the next enemy/hazard/thing). So if you're Bold in the initiative order, feel free to post your action even if other Bold people are above you.
If you have any other questions, or issues with the map, let me know!
Gerald Spalding |
Do we only have four players?
Also, we should use that token this fight so we can move it on!
GM Dennis |
That's an excellent idea, Gerald! Please do use it and pass it on soon :)

Allied Offensive Boost: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9Darn, failed on aid boost.
GM Zoomba |
I've contacted everyone. One has indicated they're unable to participate, and between this and the other tables the waitlist is empty. Lienna I'm not sure what happened to: hopefully just a brief unexpected RL thing that'll be resolved soon, but I haven't heard anything from her in a few days.
GM Zoomba |
As your pre/mid-mustering activites and the Society's faction successes are granting special resources and boons for you to call on, I've added your current ones to the top of the campaing under the 'Earned Rewards' spoiler. The latest one: the retrieval of the codebook is allowing Zarta and her assistants to send counter signals to the invading undead of the Black Echelon. At any one time, you can have all the undead you're facing be confused for a round.
Also, Gerald, Lienna, Sirius and Nuethro can you each let me know what type of +1 bane ammunition you would like to have grabbed from the armory. (1 piece of ammo of your choice, for the type and weapon of your choice)
Nuethro Hisk |
Nuethro will grab a Demon Bane Bolt.
Gerald Spalding |
I'll take an undead bane sling stone!
GM Zoomba |
Since once Sirius reads out the proclamation the mission will be over (and successful), which mission would you like to attempt next?
Nuethro Hisk |
Hmmm.... How about Sovereign Court?
The Balrog |
Sure. As a player, I have no preference.
In character, The Balrog is happy to do that mission not because he cares about Taldor or nobility, but because he thinks Gloriana Morilla is kind of hot (though she's no Zarta Dralneen).
This will also be his rationale for doing the Silver Crusade mission.
Grand Lodge appeals to his Pride (doing work for them seems the best way to get recognized in the Society), while Exchange and Scarab Sages appeal to his Greed (he thinks they will pay the best).
GM Zoomba |
As seen in the Overseer announcement, The Society has helped the Exchange 'convince' many of the city's Black Market arms dealers to patriotically chip in, and a new cache of pristine and deadly armaments becomes available.
At the beginning of one encounter, your party can activate this benefit to treat the enhancement bonuses of all their weapons as 2 higher for the duration of the encounter (if your weapon is non-magical, it becomes a +2 weapon, but +1 weapons become +3 for that fight!).
Gerald Spalding |
I just realized Balrog wasn't a magus. lol.
The Balrog |
I just realized Balrog wasn't a magus. lol.
I knew I wanted Mutation Warrior to get the wings eventually. That's the main class.
But the 1-level dip was a real tough call between Kensai Magus and Arcane Duelist.
Both get the whip. Kensai gets WF, and bard gets Arcane Strike (both of which I want).
Kensai has that awesome True-Strike-Whip Trip/Disarm as a full-round action. But only 1/day (+1 for each Pearl of Power you get).
Arcane Duelist can counter fear effects by being even scarier (Rallying Cry). And can Inspire Courage. And has more skills, better skills, CLW (to be a team player despite his cockiness), and is Charisma-based which seemed more fitting than Int-based for the character.
Gerald Spalding |
Are we using the four player modifiers?
GM Zoomba |
This special does not technically have an official 4-player adjustment.
I’ve brought this up in the GM chain for this special. The overseer and us are considering how to move forwards. Based on all the examples of adjustments I have several ideas and thoughts on how to modify coming encounters if Sirius’ RL delays/absence continues. This particular mission is one that’s trickier, so as you can see I am for now boting as needed (Sirius is fairly diplomatic)
The Balrog |
The Balrog has decent enough Diplomacy for this level (+6, as well as +6 Bluff and +7 Intimidate) but I didn't want to monopolize that portion of the game.
However, if needed he can step up, behave himself, and try to persuade nobles.
(Also: he's kind of a goofy gimmick character with an outsized personality, so if it is grating or annoying to any of you, feel free to ask me to tone it down.)
Gerald Spalding |
I like the Balrog! Lots of fun. And thank you, the botting is a perfect solution for these diplomacy encounters.
Lienna Nava |
Sorry, I got caught up in the game and completely forgot about this thread! Lienna will take a +1 construct bane crossbow bolt (that we can get an initiative bonus against them has me slightly concerned).
GM Zoomba |
Since forum bugs are preventing me from actually editing the campaign right now, here's the full list of potential bonuses your scouting/the Society's factions have entitled you to:
Once this adventure:
*When facing one or more constructs, the party can get +4 to all your initiatives
*You can force one enemy’s attack to be re-rolled
*Get a free burst of healing of 1d6 hp back to all of you The Silver Crusade has rescued trapped Sarenrae clerics who are happy to help
*Have an attack deal an extra +1d8x1.5 damage, and hit or miss the enemy is considered flanked for a round. The Scarab Sages found themselves a giant construct somehow, and its been shooting all sorts of lasers blasts from its arcane cannon
*Get a +1 Inspire courage bonus for 3 rounds The nobles of Absalom are assisting with the fights and directing their forces to shore up the defense
*You can force all undead creatures in a fight to be confused for a round, and if they strike you in that state their attacks are restricted Zarta's codebreakers are disrupting the Black Echelon's signals
*Begin an encounter with 6 temp hp (as the Grand Lodge's retaking of Fort Tempest has emboldened everyone)
*Begin an encounter with all of your weapons' enchantment bounses being 2 higher The Exchange got some choice black market supplies
*For one encounter, treat all your speeds as 10 higher As freed slaves aid the defense effort (yeah I don't really get the connection here either)
Once per each of you:
*Re-roll an initiative (this one is you only, but each can re-roll once)
GM Zoomba |
It happens. Though buckle in, cause this next one's a bit of a doozy:
GM Zoomba |
Perfect timing: both of those boons were necessary to finish the job that round :)
Gerald Spalding |
NO FREAKING WAY. I'm SO excited for this fight. Time to kick some high-tier butts.

Passing Token. (Offensive Aid): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
GM Zoomba |
Hey all,
As we're about to reach the conclusion of this defense of the city, a few things to make sure you're chronicles and reporting is all set as quickly as possible.
First, check and make sure your PFS# info is accurate on the Google Doc slide with it. Lienna: I think I'm still waiting on yours.
Second, as this is a Gameday game, there's a chance of boons! Everyone please roll a d20, like so:
boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 19
If you get a 19 or 20, also roll a d4
which boon?: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Gerald Spalding |
Boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Nuethro Hisk |
..............Boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 12
GM Zoomba |
Thank you all!
With the Society's success at driving off this dual invasion of the Black Echelon and the Fiendflesh army, the people of Absalom have witnessed and will not soon forget your courage. What’s more, the various factions of the Society have also shown that they can band together to accomplish wonders.
Each of you can choose TWO of the below rewards. Due to both your and the rest of the Society’s success, all of these potential rewards are available to pick for you, and you do not need either of your choices to be your own faction.
The Balrog |
Those are some nice rewards!
Lord Balrog does have a nice ring to it. I think I will take Noble Heir (Tullian) and Tempest Guardian (Resilient).
Thanks for running!
Nuethro Hisk |
Hmmm...
I'll take these two:
The Coins Custodian (The Exchange)
Anointed Champion (Silver Crusade)
Gerald Spalding |
I'll take the following, please:
Tempest Guardian (Grand Lodge)
Noble Heir (Sovereign Court)
Thank you for such a fun game, Zoomba!!! Specials are so crazy and you did an AMAZING job running us through it! What a breakneck pace, and you constantly had amazing and descriptive posts!
