how do you indicate speaking a different language? is it comic book style? <spanish> for example
What I'll probably do since we're dealing with real languages is to use freetranslate or Google Translate to get a rough idea of what it says, and then include a spoiler below for those who speak it.
Something like this:
The prostitute looks at Lilly with fire in her eyes. "Vous êtes la prostituée"
Spanish:"You're the whore."
Since I don't actually know Spanish or German or French, it'll be pretty rough, but it should get the job done when we use it.
It should be understood that only someone who knows Spanish should open that spoiler or have their character understand it.
They could make a Diamonds roll to see if they understand it, where a Partial Success means they understand the gist, but may come to regard a single word meaning something that it doesn't, and a 10+ Success means that they understand it completely. It would probably also move them closer to having a full understanding of the language.
I realise we didn't do a whole lot with Languages upon setting this up - a mistake on my part - so let me deal with that now.
Benji knows English and Gaelic and can understand the basics of whatever African dialect his slaves know.
Elle knows English and German. She can speak and understand Spanish, but it tends to take her a bit longer to read or write it.
Talulah knows Navajo and can probably speak English passably, but aside from a few words, she can't read or write it at all.
Actually, I guess the translation services won't have Gaelic or Navajo, so I'll find something (probably offensive) to use in those cases. But this is a thing that might sort of work.
I am totally fine with that. I assume Lilly knows German if you want Elle to be learning some of it, but I am not sure how sentimental she is about her father's memory, that she'd want to learn the language? Of course, she and Lilly could also be using it to give each other signals, since it may not be one of the more common languages of the region. I'm open, so long as you can justify it.
Elle probably knows German enough to "get the gist" of some things, but her father would have either spoken English or Spanish around her and her mother. Maybe some secret "cutesy" German phrases were thrown around but not enough to really read a German book or speak fluently to Lilly. I like the idea of signals for Elle and Lilly though. Likely the bar would be too loud for real speech to be practical from the upstairs to the downstairs. The idea of Lilly teaching Elle German is cool too. A way of feeling connected to that part of her past since this city and forward are mostly Mother memory bearing. Her father kind of represented this point of journey and adventure that she is trying to reconnect with.

I don't know if this will only make things get out of control...is there a before continuation. In my mind this would happen if the action you are doing before isn't fully resolved in the initial post, and the after action isn't fully resolved in the initial post (because this is regarding the current situation). Or maybe I should use the quote feature to respond to specific things?
In this case I'll intervene only because I was posting anyway, but especially as you guys develop a relationship, it'll definitely be understandable that you'll simply communicate with each other without me being in the way.
And what you're doing with the "before" stuff is totally solid.
