Not to contradict our GM, but the Quickstart rules seem to say that those percentages just overrule our starting values, instead of adding to it, while the 4x 20% hobby skills stack with the starting values.

It seems odd and it's at odds with how previous CoC's have done things.

Allocate the following values among the eight
Occupation Skills and also the Credit Rating skill:
one at 70%, two at 60%, three at 50% and three
at 40% (set the skills directly to these values and
ignore the skill base values written next to each
skill on the investigator sheet).
After assigning points to the Occupation Skills,
select your Personal Interest Skills. These are skills
that your character has acquired outside of work.
Pick four non-occupation skills and boost them
by 20% (adding 20 to the skill base values listed
on the investigator sheet).

Oops Wow, you are right! Thank you Allrianne...

That means I've been letting my tabletop group have about 10%-20% extra in each skill, hehe.

Q_Q

Homebrew rule maybe...?

I don't have stats yet, but I'm considering playing an Egyptian soldier evacuated from the Sudan during the Mahdist War. So the ex-military occupation. Kind of an outsider and feeling grim for the losses there.

Here's Tom Wiggs. He's a young, currently unemployed, locksmith that's been known to do the occasional (as he would put it) side job. These jobs are oftentimes rather shady, but pay is pay. The background is really short, but I'll probably fill it out a bit more tomorrow. It's meant to just give a feel of what sort of guy he is.

Tom is a really small guy that's hard to scrape by most of his life. He's used to getting beat on. He's bright and mentally tough, but barely educated.

While he owns a pistol, he almost certainly won't be carrying it very often. As he puts it, he's simply not a fan of guns.

I may change around the skills slightly depending on what people want to do with their characters, but I think he's good to go.

If I've done it correctly, I am sharing my character.

Phaedra Alexandria Covington

She is a scholar at a local university, I didn't pick a name for what university yet though since I wasn't sure exactly where we will be in game.

So are we doing it "by the Book" or "Home Brew" Just need to know to get the right numbers not that I have figured out exactly how to use them yet...

By the book! Your sheet looks golden Angus. I got confused, surprise surprise!

So far I have...

-Angus Elphinstone
-Phaedra Covington
-Tom Wiggs
-Tourachs unnamed soldier
-Eloise Cartwight (or Allrianne?)
-James or Lachland (IronGiant6)

Did I miss anyone?

Violet you ninja'd my post

In order of appearance
rdknight
aptinuviel Tom Wiggs Male Criminal
TheIronGiant6 James and Lachlan Douglass Male Vigilante and Male Combat Medic
NerdOfTheYear
Robert Henry Angus Elphinstone Male Dilettante
Joy Phaedra Alexandria Covington Female Scholar
Storyteller Shadow
Spinningdice Eloise Cartwright Female Dilletante
Tourach

Edit:Still need to sort out how to do possessions, I think other than his wardrobe, personal hygiene items, military weapons (pistol & sword} and a horse with tack; everything else he uses either belongs to the gentleman's club where he is staying or his family.

Here's my submission. Brief background and character sheet in the profile. I plan to beef up the background once I know a little bit more about where we should be and what ties us to the adventure.

I also need to buy non-weapon gear, but I assume that will happen later as well.

Don't worry too much about gear folks! Once you know what you are up against you can formulate a plan, including gear, based on credit rating.

On all the questions about gear:
Cthulhu isn't like DnD or Pathfinder! Gear, like EVERYTHING ELSE in the game adds to the eldritch Lovecraft-ian Spookiness! Here's how I understand gear works in Cthulhu: suppose you, YOU PERSONALLY, are at home with your children one night. You hear one of your kiddos scream. You burst into their room to find a lanky pale boogeyman monster dragging her through a PORTAL in the back of the closet! Your going after her, that's a given...but you've got a few seconds to think here...what will you take with you? Shotgun from your closet? Fencing sword from the Air Force Academy hanging over the mantle? Flashlight? Do you have an elephant gun in your house? Well roll a credit rating check, and mabe a luck check! This is all part of the horror....
What do you think Eloise? Is that about right?

Okay! 5,8 Eloise! Raconteur: +(2d4)X5% to fast talk! The investigator is a marvelous storyteller, and can sometimes win friends, calm enmities, earn meals, ect., through her tales.

That's a good one!

Violet, are you ok with Angus carrying a revolver? (concealed of course).

found my image of him "Dressed for Dinner" Yep tux and regiment tartan!

There's a whole lot of fight in this group of investigators. Surprising. Maybe I should have gone with the antiquarian or clockmaker. Though the picture of getting shot by a member of the party while running away from a horror was too good to pass up. It's so Cthulhu.

A Phaedra? not born with a mote in your eye perchance?

Raconteur, I can work with that Fast Talk bonus: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6 x5=+30

Do we need to tie out characters together at all, because we're quite a disparate bunch, or is there going to be throwing random misfits together in the intro?

EDIT: Oops Wrong Alias

I'm always happy to link together backgrounds. But I'm also happy with falling it at random. I'm flexible.

James could be watching/hunting down Wiggs, but he doesn't work with others at the moment.

No pinprick of blood in my eye.

Phaedra is currently a university scholar with an interest in the Spiritualist Movement going on. She's even attended a few seances and would like the university to host one that could be documented for scientific research.

I'm going to assume every British curse word in the book is allowed? James is... not the nicest fellow.

Phaedra is rather sheltered, so may be taken aback by such coarse language.

The player, on the other hand, can curse with the best of them.

Well! Today is the day! We start tonight at 8pm. It looks like we've got enough seats that we don't have to turn anyone away!

Here is some potential glue: although you come from different places and walks of life, for some reason you find yourself tonight staying at the same Hotel: the posh Draycott Inn in Chelsea, which is an affluent area in southwest London on River Thames. Chelsea is lovely gaslight district with walking paths along the river's parks. You decide why you are spending the night (or nights) here. Wife kicked you out of the house? Big speaker at the lecture hall next door? Planning to rob the bank next door tomorrow? That's enough glue to get us started, what do you think?

I have some testing to do tomorrow, and 8pm PST is 11pm here, so I might post a little early, if that's okay with you.

By all means, everyone please check in on Gameplay thread!

I think it'd actually be better if James learned that Tom was a criminal after they were in the group together. Otherwise it'll complicate a lot of the initial group getting together and become a focal point. I'd rather not distract from that right off the start.

Alrighty! I'm about to post in Gameplay.

I'll think of something and start a post up when I get home from work!

I am really excited to work on an opening post tonight and read ya'lls!

Sorry just did not have time to create a submission this week, enjoy the game everyone!

You are welcome to join up later if you decide to, Shadow. After you've had time roll something up? I invited you a long time ago so have a free pass. I hope you do!
