The old woman answers, teary-eyed.
"Az unokám is beteg, csak azért, hogy mentse. Ezek segítségével talán az élő. Öreg vagyok én már nem érdekel."
| Gyllan Dow |
Gyllan replies kindly in the tongue of his mother, "Elszomorít, hogy hallja, hogy egy ilyen fiatal beteg. Sok szerencsét mindkettőtöknek."
"It saddens me to hear that one so young is sick. Best of luck to you both."
He then gestures with a tip of his head to his companions that it's time to get to work.

You leave the woman behind, as she starts walking away, silently now.
After some paces Seline looks back, but the woman is not there anymore, as if the earth had swallow her.
---
The rest of the way towards the entrance of the sewers, where Eries Yelloweyes told you you can find Girrigz’s wererats gang is uneventful, with the streets empty and a heavy air in the silent streets.
There are a couple writings on the wall, threatening wererats of a horrible dead if they enter the city, and a deformed skull, which you presume is from one unfortunate lycanthrope, spiked on the street.
The smell from the entrance is horrible, filled with heinous odors and refuse on the floors and walls.
You brace yourselves for the worst, and enter the dirty underbelly of Korvosa.
---
So... marching order.
How are you going to see down there? Who carries a light?
Any other special preparations? Weapons on the ready?

Oops, meant to buy an ioun torch with my gold, is it too late for that? I should now be well under 6000 gp.
Also, can you set the map so we can edit it? I tried to put our tokens in a marching order, but couldn't. I'd propose something like this: Gyllan, Rommin, Corso, Iozif, Selina.
| Selina Aldaeth |
Selina continually casts Light on her shield and alerts the party to the eyes in the shadows.
Perception check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
She is fine with marching order.
| Gyllan Dow |
Take 10 on Perception for a 23.
Knowledge (nature), untrained: 1d20 ⇒ 11 = 10 due to untrained
Gyllan grimaces at the stench, but he's experienced the unpleasantness of Korvosa's underbelly before and carries on. "Remember that otyugh we fought a while back?" he asks Corso and Iozif. "His breath was worse than my da's after a night drinking rotgut."
When Selina points out the eyes in the shadows, Gyllan says, "I see 'em. And I hear what sounds like dogs barking. I wonder what kind of dogs live down here."
Corsario
|
Gyllan: Yes, you can buy it.
I normally do the map editing, just tell me the order, and I can set it out.
| Rommin Hawkridge |
Rommin has an ioun torch. He'll offer it to Selina (since she is at the far end of the group from Gyllan and his light source). If she declines, he'll put it into use himself.
Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 Rommin is very preoccupied with his footing, staring at the ground extensively to make sure he doesn't slip.
| Iozif Vasile |
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Know(Nature): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Iozif doesn't speak to the flower woman, his command of Varisian leaving much to be desired, but looks back at her with a sad frown, knowing that there he could not help everyone but feeling guilty all the same. Refocusing on the task at hand, he quickly spots
the eyes in the shadows. "Like a dog's bark, I agree. Strays perhaps? Or maybe guards of some sort? Should we skirt around them?"
| Gyllan Dow |
Gyllan:I normally do the map editing, just tell me the order, and I can set it out.
In my experience, that gets very cumbersome and confusing during combat. In any case, can you line us up in the proposed order? It's Gyllan, Rommin, Corso, Iozif, Selina.
Gyllan sets a small, glowing stone spinning arouund his head and draws his blade, then says, "Let's move forward - carefully - and see what's ahead. If it's just dogs, maybe we can scare them off or otherwise avoid a fight."
Corsario
|
You advance a little bit more, and you find a mangy stray dog, barking at you, with the sound echoing around the sewer tunnel, spiked hair, in a threatening posture.
Behind it you barely realize there is another dog, laid down at the bottom of the wall, showing its fangs but keeping quiet.
| Gyllan Dow |
Take 10 on Perception to hit both with a 23.
"Easy," Gyllan says, raising a hand for those behind him to stop. "It's a couple of strays. The one in the back is guarding something, something small and moving. Could they have pups they want to protect?"
With a quick glance over his shoulder, he says, "Rommin, you got anything to eat? Maybe we can feed these dogs something and show them dogs we're friendly. I'd hate to kill 'em and discover they're just protecting their young."
Rommin and Selina have rations we can offer. The rest of us must be city kids, we figure we can always buy something to eat somewhere.

You can try an untrained charisma check, with one or two people assisting.
| Gyllan Dow |
"I've never been especially good with animals," Gyllan says. "Corso, does your natural, uh, magnetism extend to the beasts of the field? Or the sewer? Here's some food for the nice doggies, how about you try to talk them round and I'll stand here and look friendly?"
Corso has our best Cha, but anyone who feels like it should try to make friends with the doggies. Gyllan will Aid.

Corso quickly gains the animal trust, and soon has the two dogs eating from his palm.
Three newly born pups are there too. Next to an entrance make in a crude way by destroying the wall of the tunnel.
A sign written in Taldan and Varisian reads: "Go no further or die."
| Gyllan Dow |
"Nicely done, Corso," Gyllan remarks. He tries and fails to keep a wry smile off his face as he adds, "You must be her type."
He then moves a little further along the tunnel, asking, "Anyone want a pup, or shall we keep moving - in spite of what the sign says?"
Corsario
|
There is a crude hole in the tunnel wall, and the tunnel proper continues forward for a while before making a turn. Which way?
| Selina Aldaeth |
Selina continues recasting Light spell to provide illumination for herself and trusts the judgment of the leaders in the front and continues looking behind her to make sure they are not flanked.
| Gyllan Dow |
Seeing Rommin eyeing the hole in the wall, Gyllan gives him a nod and leads the way into the opening, keeping a careful eye out for any surprises.
Take 10 on Perception for a 23 (25 vs humans).

The flow of sewer filth oozes into this rough-hewn stone cave, pooling near its center before continuing through a crude channel in the western wall. Fat black mushrooms and other disgusting fungus grow thick around the pool of slime. Several low alcoves are cut into the walls, each filled with moldering hay, filthy furs, and tiny bones.
As soon as your light shows into the cave you hear a voice from inside it.
"Get away! You are not welcome here!"
Shriekers are subterranean plants that emit a loud wail when they sense movement or light.
Subterranean predators know a shrieker’s noise indicates the presence of possible prey and move toward the sound.
| Iozif Vasile |
Iozif ponders the predicament of the stray dogs, but Corso soon has them eating from his hand (literally). Nodding his approval -though somewhat disappointed he didn't have the opportunity to try one of his extracts- he makes his careful way past the dogs. "Onwards indeed. I concur with Rommin's assessment. Namely that we appear to be on the right track."
Know(Nature): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Carefully trying to pick his way through the sewer and avoid the worst of the oozing filth, he enters the cavern behind the others. While looking about the room, he is caught off guard by the voice. He looks at Gyllan and Corso, though is distracted as he spots a mushroom in the corner. He whispers to his companions, "The fungi, there in the corner, is what is called a shrieker. Should it detect movement or light, it will begin to emit a cry rather like a scream that will draw all manner of creatures in here. Many will likely be predatory. We should be quiet and cautious with our light."
Corsario
|
Iozif even knows that the "range" of the shrieker is some 10 or 15 feet.
Do you enter the cavern?
| Gyllan Dow |
Looking back through the thread, I see that Eries, the ratfolk who asked us to come down here, said she'd give us directions to the lair of Girrigz Ripperclaws. Do we have these directions?
"Or we stay right here and talk to whoever just told us we're not invited to the party," Gyllan remarks quietly, though he gives a grateful nod to Iozif for spotting the threat. Raising his voice a little, he calls, "We were asked to come down here. Who do you serve?"
In case it's not clear, Gyllan is trying to figure out if the voice in the dark is loyal to Ripperclaws.
Corsario
|
The ratfolk that sent you here point you to this sewer, but didn't give you a map or anything like that.
"We don't' serve you, damn human! Go out and die with the rest of your dammed race. These are our tunnels, and after you all die it will be our city too!"
Corsario
|
I think Rommin will advance while showing he is not armed, to try and see the creatures.
Or am I mistaken?
| Corso Gaczi |
Corso makes a flourish bow, waving his great hat and great feather in a wide arc: "Well indeed, you do not serve us... That's not why we're here. We're here because we care about the city and, whether you want or not, you are part of this city. Do you know a fellow named Girrigz Ripperclaws? We'd like to speak with him."
Diplo: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

A wererat peeks out from behind a stone in the middle of the room, slowly and cautiously.
"Go away or you will die in his name! He won't talk to you. We will wait for all of you to die and take over the city. The city is no longer yours. The city will be ours now!"
He takes a shortbow out and points at Gyllan.
"Go now and die on the surface!"
| Gyllan Dow |
The shrieker is not going off with the wererat that close to it, right?
"Maybe you can let him decide if he'll talk to us?" Gyllan counters, stepping casually forward. "There's no cause for us to fight - and certainly no cause for you to shoot me with that bow of yours, we're just talking."
I'd like to move one square east and one square north. If he shoots, I'll move around the rock on the north side to the square NW of the ratfolk, drawing my sword as I move.
Corsario
|
The wererat lowers the bow.
"Why do you want to talk to him? He won't talk to your kind, he only want you all dead."
He approaches a little.
"What do you really want? You want the cure?"
| Gyllan Dow |
"We want everyone to be better off," Gyllan replies, rather pleased that he hasn't been shot at, "and talking to Ripperclaws is part of that. Does he have a cure? That would be helpful indeed."
