Grunyar charges right past Maria and Helgarr. "By whatever god's possessed ya, can we barter AFTER savin' the lad?" He reaches down and grabs the portcullis, and heaves until his veins bulge. The portcullis seems to give a little bit, but Grunyar is still unable to pull it up high enough for Ali to escape.
Shalelu notches an arrow and waits in case things go sour.
Waiting on Vandra. Maria can still make an action if she wants. I'm not updating diplomacy until next round.

Vandra moves forward to Helgarr and uses his augment ability to grant her +2 strength for her next turn.
The white haired woman casts a spell that creates a red aura around her arms. Meanwhile, both the armored man and the Shoanti woman ready themselves for battle.
Maria and Grunyar work hard to try and lift the portcullis, but it barely budges under their combined strength. Just a moment afterwards, Ali is suddenly diced along his front and back as the statues' glaives cut wicked arches along his flesh. Ali takes 27 damage!
Everyone's turn. Diplomacy can continue now if you wish.

The potion trickles down his throat, barely knitting his wounds back together at all and he laughs bitterly, more a moan of pain than anything else.
"Figures..."
He straightened slowly, standing there defiantly staring at the enemies. He reached up and gripped his holy symbol with one blood stained hand and smiled.

The man looks visibly shaken as he turns to the white haired woman. "That boy is just a teenager, can't we just let them go?"
The woman replies "They will not yield until the danger is stopped. But I will not be stopped. Not by them, or the village, or ANYONE! I shall burn Sandpoint down until it is all but ashes around me. Now are you going to man up and fight, or shall I just cut you down?"
The Shoanti woman giggles.
The armored man shifts slightly and says very quietly "I'll fight." Anyone who can beat a sense motive DC of ... 2, can tell that he's lying.
While they're all talking, Grunyar continues heaving up the portcullis, but to no avail.
Waiting on Vandra and Maria. We move on tomorrow morning.

Vandra uses his augment ability to enhance Shalelu's Dex for the next round. Maria has been pushed back since there is not enough space for all three of them (or even two really) to lift the portcullis. Instead, she draws her bow and prepares to shoot.
Miraculously, Ali in a fit of desperation manages to dodge the two glaives with rogue-like reflexes! He's okay!
Meanwhile, the white haired woman smirks. "You're of no use to me, you lying, cowardly swine. Lyrie, you know what to do."
"Yes, Nualia." Replies the Shoanti woman. She draws a magic wand and casts a spell on the armored man, while Nualia goes into a frenzy and begins ripping him to shreds with kukri and claw.

Maria abandons trying to lift the bars through muscle power and starts looking for a way to release him. D.Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
DM TreasureFox |
Maria notices that the portcullis has a tiny keyhole on the outside, allowing her to tinker with the lock. After a couple seconds, she expertly unlocks the portcullis, which flies upwards as Grunyar heaves.
Grunyar is holding the portcullis open. Characters can now move in and out of the trap without issue (on this side anyways). Since Ali has already acted, someone might want to grab him and pull.
Also note that when actual fighting begins, characters occupying the same square (currently Helgarr, Maria, and Grunyar) will suffer penalties, likely to AC and Reflex.
Waiting on Helgarr, Cleo, and Vandra.

Oh well you may be right. It was a lovely run though. Treasure you did awesomely! This was my first play by post and truly you made the town of sandpoint into something real. I never expected the level of detail you provided, and was enamored from the start.
Maria and Ali, to the very end, thanks for being there, you made me laugh repeatedly which I think is one of the greatest things ever.
Furnok, Helgar, and Vandra, if you ever read this, I hope all it well and continues to be so.
Bye guys.
ps: I'll happily retract the bye if we're wrong and this comes back alive.

I'm adding you to my address book so that any games I start in the near future I can invite you.
Cleo Gingerberry |
Didn't know we could do that, but done now as well.
Helgarr |
I admit I got a little lost on the turns - is there time in the round for Ali to move back, or has he already acted this one? My actions will depend on that, but still I can talk:
"Get the heck behind me!" - the Barbarian roars at Ali - "You too, if you want to fight on our side!" - she glares at the warrior - "In a second we will be cutting everything down from this line forward" - finishing with a low growl.
DM TreasureFox |
Part 1 of incremental posting
Ali has already acted, so your best chance to get him out of there is to pull him.
The warrior yells out in pain with his back against the other portcullis. Blood begins to drip down his armor.
I'll give Helgarr some time to act. If anyone would be willing to send Vandra a message on my (or the game's) behalf, I'd appreciate it.
Helgarr |
I'm gonna do just that - pull Ali out. He is not going to resist I think, so do I need to roll anything?
"Get out of there!" - Helgarr roars, pulling her companion out of the trap.
Let me see if I understand this - beyond Ali, there is a portcullis which is still down (the one on this side is only up because Grunyar is holding it up, correct?) - the warrior has its back to that portcullis and is being attacked by his 'former' allies. Am I getting it all right?
Helgarr |
Ok, in that case, I'm gonna talk again :D
"Fight defensively warrior! Stay alive! We will be with you in a second!" - the barbarian roars - "Maria! Can you open that gate?!"
Maria the Great |
I'm trying. Did anybody else run into a weird glitch yesterday where all their game messageboards were blank?
Maria the Great |
Scary. Good thing they were able to be recovered.
DM TreasureFox |
Just in time. Ali gets pulled out of the cage just when the floor gives out and reveals a 20 foot pit.
Shalelu fires an arrow at the unarmored mage, but even though it flew through the portcullis, it struck some sort of magical barrier protecting her. Orik focuses completely on defending himself, but receives a wicked cut from Nualia's kukri. There is a fair bit of blood dripping down his armor. Meanwhile, the mage reaches out towards Orik and casts a sudden blast of fire. Orik was able to keep away from the majority of the blast, but Helgarr and Ali stumble into each other in the cramped space and get hit. Grunyar fortunately is just a tiny bit short, but still the top of his head gets singed and his patience wears very thin.

Guys, sorry for throwing sand in the gears but... Maria, you told Helgarr you were trying to open the second portcullis - did that fail or you decided to change tactics? :D
My understanding was that there were two locks on the first portcullis and that's what I was opening and talking about. Now there is no floor in front of the second portcullis. Least that's what I thought was going on.
Helgarr |
I don't think the floor is gone - why do you think it is? :D

Seems like a solid reason :D
This means I have basically no way of getting to him... Or...

Cleo heals up Ali while he begins summoning a creature. Maria and Shalelu fire arrows into the portcullis which gives Nualia and Lyrie enough cover to attack Orik. Fortunately for Orik, he blocks Nualia's frenzy, but cannot block the missile Lyrie fires from her wand. Helgarr leaps onto the portcullis and hangs on for a few seconds before the pit closes up and the portcullises lift up into the ceiling. A cranking sound can be heard from the walls behind each statue.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Deaf (Ex)
Akatas cannot hear. They are immune to spells and effects that rely on hearing to function, but they also cannot make Perception checks to listen.
Hibernation (Ex)
Akatas can enter a state of hibernation for an indefinite period of time when food is scarce. When an akata wishes to enter hibernation, it seeks out a den and surrounds itself in a layer of fibrous material excreted from its mouth—these fibers quickly harden into a dense, almost metallic cocoon. While hibernating, an akata does not need to drink or eat. The cocoon has hardness 10 and 60 hit points, and is immune to fire and bludgeoning (including falling) damage. As long as the cocoon remains intact, the akata within remains unharmed. The akata remains in a state of hibernation until it senses another living creature within 10 feet or is exposed to extreme heat, at which point it claws its way to freedom in 1d4 minutes as its cocoon degrades to fragments of strange metal.
Salt Water Vulnerability (Ex)
Salt water acts as an extremely strong acid to akatas. A splash of salt water deals 1d6 points of damage to an akata, and full immersion in salt water deals 4d6 points of damage per round.
Void Bite (Ex)
Akatas hold hundreds of invisibly small larval young within their mouths, spreading these parasitic creatures to hosts through their bite. Only humanoids make suitable hosts for akata young—all other creature types are immune to this parasitic infection. The disease itself is known as void death.
Disease (Ex)
Void Death: Bite—injury; save Fort DC 12; onset 1 hour; frequency 1/day; effect 1d2 Dex and 1d2 Con damage.
An infected creature who dies rises as a void zombie 2d4 hours later; cure 2 consecutive saves.
Alis eyes snap open and he gestures at a spot behind the two women, grinning ferally. As he gestures light explodes from the spot, on the opposite side of the woman from Orrick, and a blue lion esq creature springs in to being. The creature lets loose a blood curdling howl, before attacking the woman Nualia.

Cleo leans over to keep Helgarr protected while Ali and Maria launch projectiles at the enemy. Though Maria misses, Ali lands a clean hit on Nualia's head. Despite the impact, Nualia seems to be completely unphased by the acidic potion. Ali's akata fares less well, as it tries to attack Nualia and misses every time. Even Helgarr couldn't manage to land a solid hit, as her ranseur is easily dodged. It would seem that Nualia has some sort of protection magic on her, given that normal hide armor would never protect the user so effectively.
Shalelu manages to get a shot into the mage Lyrie, while Grunyar gets back to make some space. Orik mutters a hurried 'thanks' before filing backwards towards Cleo. Nualia is put off guard by how quickly the group focused her, and so she focused too hard on defense to actually land any attacks. Lyrie fires another beam to keep pinging Orik, while the ghostly dog tears the akata a new one Akata takes 12 damage.
