OK - I strip him down to the bare essentials.
I chose Illuskan, Korrinish and - Dennik. He may have some loner/northmen blood in his veins.
Cheers
Dennik is a good fit.
Yes, you can have a dog. But don't stat him out, he won't feature in this adventure.

To be fair Fabes, the bit that was wrong was the bit I did. Told you I was not mathstastic.
Done and dusted. Checked all the skill bits, and think I'm now straight.

Rev -I count the halfling as a 23 pt buy PC (if you apply racial bonuses after buying stats).
Second thoughts you may be right, Rev. Which way round should we do it, DM?
Just interested because I am playing a human but we have always applied the racial bonus on top for maximum advantage.
Cheers
I
(a) am deeply rubbish at maths,(b) have never played a halfling before - which is why I wanted to try it,
(c) until 2 weeks ago, had never built anything on a point buy. I grew up on very old 1E when all character builds ended in a stand up fight because only one of us ever had calculator and that one person was always the person who got the PC that lived beyond first level.
What I did in this case was to knock the racial plus and minuses off before and then used the buy to bring the St stat back up 8. Up to DM. I'm very happy to have the S -1 that crop up all over me skills take a walk, but I'll do whatever is best.

Because my son is in the land of Nod and I have some free time...
I have collated a rough idea of what the players various strengths and weaknesses are (10-11 represents average, 12+ is a strength and 9- a weakness).
This is purely subjective and chance for us to natter on a bit more while the PC's are all up and running. Please don't take this as advice or orders, it's just a bit of fun which we can look back on after the first adventure - and probably laugh. Fabesmini - I hope you don't mind me doing this, but like I said this is sort of the way I start every game.
If we were playing a normal game, the stats would help decide what everyone was playing. But in Treasure Hunt, the fun part will be seeing where we all end up. Getting a balanced party could be much harder than in other games.
1) Healaugh ap Caftenor, halfling fisherfolk, Very quick and bright but a bit lacking in common sense? A rogue perhaps?
2) Tresmeer Torwalker, human farmer, Quicker and more forceful. A druid, hopefully?
3) Cynderyn Meurig, human smithy, Very strong but a bit clumsy. A fighter?
4) Bran Stonar, human warrior, Very strong but not so nice. Another fighter or a barbarian with a greataxe?
5) Conall MacFaolan, human houndmaster, Very wise and hardy but a bit slow on the uptake. A cleric?
6) Siobhan, half-elf wise woman/sage, Very Intelligent and wise but a bit weak. A wizard?
What does everyone think? It looks a balanced party on paper.
Fabes, when do we start, I am champing at the bit.
Cheers

Tough blacksmith. What simple weapon is he proficient with? http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/craft.htm
It's all there about crafting - it won't be relevant in this adventure though. And he ain't got no maul. ;)
@ French Wolf - Well, it won't be at least until tonight what with work and all that.

Healaugh I think is just a bit obsessive. He could possibly end up going the Rogue route (it's a natural for halflings after all). His highish Charisma is useless at the moment, but I'm hoping adventuring will make him a bit more balanced. All the chap thinks about now is fish and pirates. Gotta broaden that outlook.
It does look a balanced party though - I am so looking forward to this. Plus I have an evening in tonight.

I am in tonight too, once my little rascal is in bed.
I have Tresmeer as an hairy Liam Neeson type who knows a bit about animals etc, but I have deliberately put all his stats over 10 in case he flunks as a druid.
Ten years ago, my warrior bog elf played in Under Illefarn (the sister to this scenario) and the dice definitely ignored me, Swampy ended up a pacifist druid by the end of the scenario.
This time I'm trying to keep my options open.
| Rev Rosey |
All my own plans and calculations for Healaugh are highly dependant on my throwing better rolls than usual. Dice hate me. Might get son to do my rolls, his luck is miles better and he'll be up and rambling for at least the first half of the evening.
Love the Liam Neeson image. I can see him. Healaugh is more a scaled down thinner Andy Serkis (in non-Gollum/Kong mode).

Rolls will be done via Invisible Castle
If you're not familiar with it, you just go to the roll dice section, enter your info, and it will provide you with a links to cut and paste.

If you go into reply to this post, it shows you an example of how to post a roll.
I tend to open another link to IC to make my life easier. Also the BCCode tags at the end of the posting screen may help too.
Tresmeer's Attack roll 5, Damage 3
It took a bit of a while to get used to, but after a few attempts I got the hang of it and I'm a complete technophobe.
On that point, Fabesmini (when you get a chance) how did you get the map available for us.
I guess you scanned it from the back of the scenario or a pdf but what do you do after? I ask for my Splintered Isles campaign for which the players have never seen a map.
Cheers

I went into the pdf (that I had purchased from Paizo), and right-clicked on the page with the map. I then saved it as a jpeg. I have an account on Photobucket, and I uploaded it to there. I then posted a link to that.

1) I totally see that, yay halflings!
5) I think roughly Ranger was what he was thinking of with all the goodness with his nature skills.
6) Wizard or cleric work. Adept spells are divine, so she already has a link to the Earthmother, and she's already lived in books with all those knowledges ;)

Golden. Thank you, I got the scanner last week. So the mysteries of the jpeg is next. Then onto the slopes of Photobucket before the summit link.
As you can see, I regard computer stuff as a bit of a challenge.
Kayos - I agree on the houndmaster ranger. And your girl looks like she may end up a mystic theurge one day. But first contact will probably change all of that.

Mmm.. mystic theurge, that's a shiny one that I love :) But yes, who knows what will happen once we hit play? -I've planned out character progression for characters in the past and it sometimes falls down in the play as something in the RP changes things.

Whereabouts in the north, Rev?

Yorkshire. Where in Yorkshire? The bright lights of Leeds? or it sounds like James Herriot territory.
Heriot country - Swaledale. Most of the associated cuteness mercifully centres around Thirsk. We just get walkers in droves and there are many, many deeply terrible tea shops to cater for them.

Could you let us know how you want us to use specific untrained abilities or skills?
What about the lack of equipment, how does that effect the dice roll?
For instance, Tresmeer wants to make the little girl a friend and make sure she is ok.
Can I just make a Diplomacy check, it is an untrained skill. Heal Tresmeer has too but no equipment other than his robe.
This maybe where my knowledge of the way the scenario works in first edition is against me.
Cheers
| FabesMinis |
You just make checks the same way you normally do in 3E. No difference. If a skill says you can use it untrained, you can use it untrained. i see no reason to change one of the primary benefits of 3E. You won't be magically changing into full PC classes, you will take one when you reach second level.
One of the girls is Siobhan, one is an NPC (obviously you can't use Diplomacy, Bluff, Intimidate etc against other PCs)

I'm raising a glass of cider here to Mr Gygax, without whom we wouldn't be here, creating a fantastic story. His funeral service has started I believe, so I'm dedicating this PbP to the memory of the original Dungeon Master. It's not much, but he influenced so many lives.

Fabesminis, I am sorry to say that I am unable to participate in the game. My computer went on the fritz Friday evening and I have spent all weekend trying to fix it with no success, and I don't know when I am going to be able to have one up and running again. At the moment I am at a public access computer, checking in on certain things, writing a few notes to a few boards and people, but am unable to devote myself to something as intensive as you PbP game. I am sorry for this as it was something that I was looking forward to and excited in participating in as I hadn't before. Please tell the other players thank you for the help and that I am sorry for having to back out.

That's really sweet. Whilst I haven't been playing long enough to have much exposure to anything written directly by the late Mr Gygax, I have had no end of fun playing in many D&D campaigns that wouldn't have happened if it weren't for him. (or something less babble-filled)

Oh no! I hope you get a fixed computer really soon, you'll be missed but thanks for letting us know *hugs*

Sorry to hear that, fopalup; let us know if your pc gets fixed and our lovable blacksmith can appear later on in the adventure as another survivor.
The same goes for other PCs who die; you can create a new one who will be encountered later on (if you wish to keep playing).

Very sorry to hear that fopalup. Hope you'll be back in the of computerdom very soon and Cyndeyrn reappears. With luck you might even recognise some of us, although at the moment I'm not counting my own chances of survival as high!
