The Tomb of Horros Part 1 (4e) - Group 2

Game Master Rev Rosey

Tomb of Horrors Group 2.
Ah yes. Now I remember. I set up another thread for Group 2 after the first episode because the type in the main title was just embarrassing me.

Female Tiefling Warlord/Infernal Strategist 18

"This palce is a tomb, or perhaps it would be more accurate to say a burial vault. Full of traps, and puzzles, and an assortment of undead creatures. It once belonged to a famous lich called Acererak. And yes, we're aware of the problems with energy being transferred from the feywild to here, and then on to... somewhere else. Where is hard to say, and the lich was supposedly destroyed some years ago, so who is also a problem."

Once you're all rested up, what's the plan?

Male Dwarf Warden/16

Do we assume this one (first?) key happens to be the correct key, or should be go to another portal and find out if there is another key in it as well?

I'll bet we need more than one key, Acerack won't make it that easy on us, he he.

Female Tiefling Warlord/Infernal Strategist 18

Did we work out how the door opened? I don't want to trek back and find we need anything else.

There were two locks, both of which needed keys.

Yes, I think we should tackle another portal and see if another key is in it. After that, we may need to tackle the third one to make sure there is not one key in each (with one being a faux key or the like). For now, after the rest, lets see if we can find the tri-portal room (should be easy enough...judging from the map) and choose another portal then.

Female Tiefling Warlord/Infernal Strategist 18

Agreed. Although I don't think we should just wander down there humming jaunty tunes, without having someone checking for traps.

Female Wood Elf Cleric / 3

I cannot currently see the map, but i will head where they are indicating scanning for traps 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (13) + 15 = 28

Lynore creeps forward weerily looking for traps.

Lynore discovers no traps on her way to the door. The door itself however is a portal, enchanted to give the appearance of wood. Through it, the assassin can see the group's starting place.

MAP

Female Wood Elf Cleric / 3

Lynore boldly steps through the portal.

... and is right back where she started, confronting three portals.

The rest of the group see her vanish.

Male Dwarf Warden/16

Barel walks forward and looks through the portal. Does he see Lynore, or just the starting room? If he sees her, he will follow her through the portal. If not, he will wait for Thom to act.

"Never have trusted portals. Doesn't feel right, being beamed around the planes like a damned...I don't know what, but it isn't right!"

Thom moves up behind Barel, and laughs, "Heh, leave this to the professionals, Barel."

Arcane check take 10, for total of 30

Female Tiefling Warlord/Infernal Strategist 18

"I'm going through." Arishat shrugs, and moves past Barel and Thom. "If everything is all right, it's all right, and if it's not Lynore might need help." She steps through the portal.

Beyond the already strong sense of arcane power, Thom learns nothing new. Through the portal, Barel can see the unharmed assassin.

Arishat simply follows Lynore, vanishing from the sight of her friends, but returning to her strarting point.

Male Deva Cleric lvl 14

Sorry for the delays everyone, I was gone for a while and now its hard getting back into the habit of checking my games everyday.

Tavar's Cat Tabi boots prevent any damage for the fall and also because of the boots he allways lands on his feet.

Athletics = 1d20 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 6 + 3 = 29

Tavar jumps up grabs the ledge and scampers up dusts off his robes and acts like everything was part of his plan all along.
"What's everyone waiting for?"
Tavar will then follow Arishat through the portal.

PS Tavar will also spend a 2HS.

Male Dwarf Warden/16

Barel does hurry through the portal as he sees Lynore...slightly ashamed as he hears Arishat's comment. He had not thought of Lynore in trouble on the other side.

Male Halfling Monk 18 / Ghostwalker

Lanthair shrugs his shoulders and follows the others.

The group reassemble in front of the three portals. The souternmost is thoroughly explored, leaving only the middle one with its odd emanation of feywild power and the top one radiating a sense of the mortal world. It seems as if all three portals are linked to this single exit.

Quick reminder to save you all having to hunt back pages:
Mortal Portal had a ruined and apparently deserted lab behind it.
Feywild Portal was covered in fungus.
Alien Portal, you've just explored.

MAP

Female Wood Elf Cleric / 3

The deserted lab sounds nice, it might be the perfect next stop and chapter in our Travel Guide, i am thinking of naming it "Come see Moil, Sit a Spell, Stay Awhile." Not the best title but I am always up for suggestions. So far the tapestries and the guardian at the portal have been my favorite and will be getting full write ups.

Male Deva Cleric lvl 14

The lab could be interesting but the other portal has fairies.

"Moil! City of 1001 surprises! All new attractions, recently upgraded to meet health and safety requirements!"

Female Tiefling Warlord/Infernal Strategist 18
Tavar oracle of the Raven Queen wrote:

"Definitely a reason why the lab is preferable."

"There is a reason why I became a wizard, fairies scare me too much, he he."

Sounds to me as if the votes are going to the Mortal Portal.

Male Halfling Monk 18 / Ghostwalker

Lanthair stands aside impassively. But ooc, this choice sounds fine by me.

Marching order and light source arrangements?

Thom will be in the middle, and will also provide the light, he he.

Female Wood Elf Cleric / 3

I do not mind going first if needed, but Barel being big and tough may be the best bet.

Female Tiefling Warlord/Infernal Strategist 18

"Barel and Lynore, I think, in the front. Thom and me behind, Tavar and Lanthair last. Don't move too far into the room, let's check it out first, but don't get stay too close together. If there are enemies, let's try and take them down fast and hard."

Male Deva Cleric lvl 14

"Agreed, but if we have 10 minutes I can recast Deathly Shroud, it might prove helpful if we encounter further traps like the bridge and vats."

Just in case we do, religion = 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19
That's 2 hours with a little help we can up to 4.

Timing is up to you. Nothing is chasing you that you know of.

Female Tiefling Warlord/Infernal Strategist 18

Arishat will help as best she can. Religion check to Aid Another 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27.

Cunningly disguised as undead, the group form up and enter the next portal.

The shattered remains of three stone vats spread across the floor, joining a mass of glass shards, broken crockery, destroyed equipment and rotted wood that litters the whole area.

MAP

The brown objects are bits of broken table, desk and bookcase large enough to be hazardous. The vats are much more broken than that, but I can't find a way to show it.

Male Halfling Monk 18 / Ghostwalker

Anything moving or making a sound? Perception 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (1) + 15 = 16

Female Wood Elf Cleric / 3

Perc 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24+4 if traps

Lanthair notices nothing, but Lynore is fairly sure she senses no traps. The atmosphere in this chamber is bleak in the extreme, void of life, void of sound, void of anything that looks as if it has been used for centuries. Your protective covering from Tavar does seem to reduce the chill and sense of dread, however.

Happy Christmas!

Thom will assist with the ritual, and then he will scan the area for magical auras.

Aid another for Religion 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (5) + 16 = 21
Arcane take 10 total of 30

Merry Christmas all!

Thom is sure the place has been deserted for centuries. Possibly the faintest hint of a malicious laugh lingers in his ears . . .

Thom shudders, "Hmmm, I don't like this at all. I say we just get out of here and move on to the next portal."

Male Dwarf Warden/16

"Fair enough," and Barel heads towards the exit while walking next to the wall.

move to M3 via E6, L6, and L3

Keeping his back to the wall, Barel eases his way past the broken remains of the lab, feet crunching as he crushes fragments of glass, stone, bone and wood underfoot. As he moves, it seems as if faint, ancient shades tug at him.

The way out is barred by a 10 foot pit filled with rusted spikes.

MAP

Male Halfling Monk 18 / Ghostwalker

"I thought we were looking for something in this place. Perhaps we ought to search."

Female Tiefling Warlord/Infernal Strategist 18

"I suppose so. I suggest Barel and I get a rope across the pit so we can get out, you adn Lynore search, and Thom and Tavar can add their expertise in arcane and religious matters. From near the exit, if they want." She smirks slightly at Thom, before moving over to the pit.

Is the wall worn enough to try a horizontal traverse above the pit? Pitons and a rope would surely make it easier.

The pit looks simple enough to negotiate. Once down - and with a rope that would be easy - crossing the spikes presents no difficulty that Arishat can see. Falling on them would still prove to be an error, however.

You can try the horizontal traverse of course. The DC wouldn't be high.

Male Halfling Monk 18 / Ghostwalker

Lanthair cautiously searches the junk for keys or other useful bits.

Perception 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (17) + 15 = 32

Thom nods at Arishat, "Yes, I like that idea." When he notices the smirk, he glances guiltily at Tavar, and says quietly to him, "Do you think she is on to us?"

Move towards the exit, and end in L5, taking the same route Barel took.

Lanthair finds the scrapings of enough ancient experimentation to be useful in the present time and place. With each movement, more of the residuum disperses, but he can gather enough to be of service if he chooses. He also spots a few fragments of mithril.

A faint movement of the air makes the hairs on the back of the halfling's neck rise.

Took an educated guess on Arishat and Lanthair's positions.

"In the last chamber, we got the key off a creature. If there aren't any here, let's just collect anything that seems valuable and leave."
