I think I'd go with a bomb-lobbing Grippli alchemist if I do ever use it, but like Uesugi I'm also a little oldschool, preferring core races.

In my Rise of the Runelords F2F game, I play a melee alchemist called Eddie. Gods, he's powerful. He's a hilarious character, but he came out a little stronger than I intended. I have to make sure to underplay his abilities a bit in combat, only going nova when we've got a really tough fight.

I took a glance at the Metamorph Alchemist. Looks pretty damn powerful and highly flavorable. But I haven't played one live, so I don't know yet.
Hmm, the real problem with this archetype is that you don't need Intelligence- you can dump it and just min max your Str, Dex, Con stats. Just like the old days of 3rd ed...

I didn't dump int with Eddie. Getting high level alchemist spells / potions is important. I went with a 14 int and a 17 strength to start. But if you're a beast morph, your mutagens really boost you. Then you enlarge. By the time you add haste in... You're scary. Especially if you have fast drinker trait and a familiar to feed you potions!

I have a build for a Preservationist Alchemist that I've been thinking about moving into PFS. He's an elf so he gets longbow proficiency, and I would get the explosive missile discovery so I can shoot bombs at people from 100+ feet away, then drop summoned beasties to cover my retreat if they get too close.
Alchemists man, they're pretty amazing. That's why I like the Mutagenic Mauler archetype for Gallix. Gets him a little bit past just being a pure brute.

Yes self buffing speed is a drawback. Once you get to decent enough levels there are a large amount of 10 min/lvl or hour per lvl extracts that will buff you significantly. They are very versatile characters.

I have a grenadier alchemist, who eventually will be flying and discover eternal youth. While staying an enigma, with a mask and a mishap of vocal alteration.

Ya my mindchemist is also on the eternal youth path. He's in his 50s and doing his very best to avoid death. Spent his youth a man servant slave, traded away his soul upon death to escape... doing his best to avoid payment permanently.

Regarding which tier we wind up playing, I've got a variety of 1st level PCs to pick from and that's basically it; my one higher level PC is playing through a series of scenarios and likely won't be finished by the time BuA starts. But Darth [Insert] seemed too cliché.
Since his family traveled from Tien to Golarion, with the idea of better business (his parents are Merchants in antiques), the long Tien name would be a tricky thing for western tongues.
Since his family name translates as Dark Raven in Taldan, it became Arthraven, for the ease of the gaijin.
The D. would be an easy one to add, though i've yet to find a nice Tien name that starts with a D

This first part is mostly investigative and roleplaying with little combat. Given that, I hope that you're still enjoying yourselves! There will be plenty of opportunities to test your combat prowess later.

Us low level casters don't mind a lack of combat.. at least this one :) A mix of things is one of my favorite qualities of these PFS modules.

Agreed on both points.
I also play an Elven arcanist, so I can certainly empathize. Having 4 spells a day makes you really picky in deciding when to use them. I've lobbed many, many acid splashes. :)

I can't say that investigation is exactly Gallix's forte, but it's fun to force him to stretch his mental muscles from time to time. Plus, he does have the social skills to help things along if we get in a jam with a particularly stubborn citizen, so at least he's not totally useless. This is why 4+Int skill classes are great!

I don't mind but don't think my katana isn't crying to CDG something. But the training in Uesugi knows that a blade must only be drawn when there are no other choices left.
