Krezen strikes the fourth lizard, which crumbles to dust and vanishes!
L4 down. Gemheart, then Jan.

Gemheart 5ft steps to E3 and attacks with his Lucerne Hammer and Energy Blade on L1.

"I'm sick of these damn lizards!"

Jan charges forwards, striking with his staff.
Charging to D4.

acrobatics to avoid AoO from L1: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15

Acrobatics is probably a failure. AC is 23 against the AoO because I am charging.

To hit bonuses: +2 charge, +3 divine favor, -2 Power Attack. Total +3.
Damage bonuses: +1d6+1 shillelagh, +3 divine favor, +6 Power Attack, +3d6 sneak attack. Total +1d6+10, +3d6 sneak.

Quarterstaff vs. L2: 1d20 + 13 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 13 + 3 = 24
Quarterstaff damage: 1d6 + 7 + 1d6 + 10 + 3d6 ⇒ (3) + 7 + (4) + 10 + (3, 4, 2) = 33

9 of that damage is sneak attack damage.

The second lizard gets a tongue attack in on Jan:
AoO: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
though it makes no difference. Both Gemheart and Jan destroy a lizard, leaving only the third lizard remaining.

The final lizard hisses and strikes at Krezen:
tongue: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
but they, too, can't seem to hit.

Map updated, Krezen's turn.

New page, reposting initiative, although it probably won't matter for much longer:
Arat Karavakos -- 25
Krezen -- 23
Gemheart -- 20
Jan -- 18
L3 --0

HP: 49/56 || Current AC: 23

"Ok then - have it your way" - Krezen grumbles, moving forward and striking twice at the lizard.

5' to E:9, and attacking L3.

Bardiche: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23

Bardiche: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Damage if it hits: 1d10 + 17 ⇒ (10) + 17 = 27

Krezen hits and the final lizard crumples into a deep red powder!

Combat over, finally.

Anyone who inspects the partially destroyed body finds something else wedged inside of its frame: a four-inch wide key that seems to be made of pure adamantine. It does not appear to be trapped, and it has an engraving in Draconic:

Draconic:
First in hardness, not in place.

Detect Magic:
The adamantine key has a strong transmutation aura.

Gemheart:
The adamantine key looks a lot like the mithral key you obtained from the Splinter you defeated on the second floor on page 54.

From the northwest corner of the room, underneath the table there, a muffled, deep elvish voice becomes audible. It sounds as if whoever is speaking is directing their voice towards the wall and not towards you, but you can sort of make out what they are saying:
"You, you there, hast thou comest to rescue me? I hath been trapped in this foul chamber ever since a previous group of bumbling adventurers brought me here and then lost me. "

Gemheart:
The voice definitely sounds like the Head of Vyrelis.

"Why do these lizards crumple to powder when killed? Is it because they are summoned? And who summoned them?"

Jan tries to identify the aura on the key.

HP: 49/56 || Current AC: 23

"Thanks Jan" - Krezen nods at the healing - "I gotta agree - it seemed we would be biting it there for a second, but you lads definitely brought the pain on that bastard! - he claps both his companions on the back.

'First in hardness, not in place' - he reads the inscription on the key - "No idea what it means though" - he shrugs.

Jan Carpenter wrote:

"Not for long" - Krezen growls, drawing his bardiche and moving toward the head - "Who, or what are you? Speak"

"I am Vyrellis Virnia, one of the original two prisoners of the Pyramid of Shadows. The other is the man who killed me, Karavakos Karthad."

As Krezen approaches, he can make out the source of the voice stuffed behind a stack of books under the table. A black crystal the size of a bowling ball sits in the corner of the room, and contained within it is the animated image of a disembodied eladrin head. The head, Vyrellis, as she calls herself, continues to speak.

"The lizards, as you call them, are Eaters of Vecna. This chamber was once the heart of a temple of Vecna, and some of the power still lingers here, occasionally spawning creatures like those. Though the lunatic Arat Karavakos claimed this space for himself, it doth seem he could not completely remove the magic of its previous occupants. Still, the Eaters of Vecna now are less powerful and less frequent than they were a century ago, as the Pyramid of Shadows slowly heals itself as long as its original purpose remains."

"But thou art curious to know why I am here," she says in spite of the fact that none of you asked,
"Permit me to explain to thee."

Unless one of you stops her, the eladrin will continue monologuing...

"The Pyramid was created by Shavarla to house a single occupant: Karavakos himself. The vile architect sought to prevent her captive from escaping, so she created a spell that split his life energy into four splinters. Three were scattered throughout the Pyramid, whilst the fourth remains in his body. Moreover, to prevent the tiefling from recovering the fragments of his life, some fiendish spawn of Shavarla created a trio of golems, each powered by a splinter of Karavakos. Only with the destruction of these creatures can Karavakos regain his full power. That is why he continues to beg those he has captured to destroy the Splinters."

"Unfortunately for me, I was right next to Karavakos as the Pyramid was completed. Not only was I sucked in with him, but Shavarla's spell affected me, too, spitting my life force into four pieces. But whilst the splintering of Karavakos weakens him, I am already dead, as thou can doubtless tell from the fact that mine head is not attached to my body. Yet having my splinters separated prevents me from moving on to any afterlife. Thusly I am trapped here, in limbo, until someone recovers the remaining splinters of my life. I take it as a small blessing that the fiends did not create golems out of my splinters:
the remaining pieces of me art not moving around.
"

Reminder: The entry to the Library of Whispers, the room you were in immediately before this one, contained a statue of an eladrin. I'm reminding you of this because it was awhile ago, even though it has only been a few minutes of in-game time.

"With the aid of a prior group of adventurers, I hath already recovered one of my splinters. I had hoped to find a second one here, in the statue of me, but it was gone. Arat Karavakos, in his ravings, uttered something about fey raiding his territory and taking valuables, so I assume they took my second splinter. In any case, the adventurers who brought me here were defeated by the Splinter of Karavakos, and hence I have remained in this place ever since."

"Interesting. So you seek to reunite the rest of your body so your spirit can pass on? There is a statue of an Eladrin in the next room. But how can you be sure your spirit will be able to leave this place?"

"And you said that Karavakos killed you. Do you seek revenge for this? From your story it sounded as if it was Shavarla's spell that killed you, not Karavakos."

"Karavakos is the one who slew me. He cut off my head, with a sword. Shavarla's magic is what bound my spirit from moving on from this life. Yes, I would revenge be brought against Karavakos."

Ah, right, you human(oid)s have faulty memories. Let's see here...

--A pair of harpies that were friendly to the original PCs were kidnapped by a group of dragonborn who live on the first floor. The leader of the dragonborn, Garash Vren, offered to release them and further reward the PCs if they brought him a book called the Tome of Vecna's Breath, which he claimed would be in the Library of Whispers (the room you are in right now). He also sent Hozela to help the PCs, and Hozela is waiting back in your base.

--Thoraska the frost dragon on the second floor wanted you to investigate the home plane of the arboreans. The arboreans seem to have some sort of intra-faction conflict going on, but you have yet to learn much about it or them. Regardless, one of the arboreans (Hathnor) was sent to help you and is back in your base. Thoraska also sent Sorjla to help you and she is in your base as well.

--An eladrin who lives in Thoraska's cave asked for help with their brother, who has been transmuted to stone. The three of you (plus Yessai before she left the game) talked to a medusa on the first floor who was affiliated with the Otyugh Empress, and the medusa claimed that one of the Otyugh Empress' followers could reverse petrification. When you went up to the third floor and fought a bunch of shadows and almost all got turned into shadows, you met and talked to the Otyugh Empress. The OE was on her way to go see the arboreans, because she is concerned about them planting seeds in the fabric of the Pyramid which could mess things up.

--The Otyugh Empress also claimed she had an ally known as Harumon, who lives in the chamber on the first floor to the southwest of the Grand Stairs. Harumon is part fire elemental and could reverse petrification, but he is ill after getting into a fight with a shapeshifter who sucked the flame out of him.

--Thoraska is also concerned that the Otyugh Empress may be being manipulated by Shavarla, the creator of the Pyramid.

--And now the Head of Vyrellis wants you to recover the two remaining fragments of her life, once of which used to be in this room before it was taken by some sort of fey recently.

No, Thoraska specified that she wanted to know more about Arsalaunooza, the demiplane from which the arboreans originated before being sucked in to the pyramid.

In response to Krezen's query, the Vyrellis responds
"[b]Yes, I can see, I still have my eyes, don't I? And I can aid one of you in movement.[/b["

Whoever is carrying the Head of Vyrellis gains the following benefits: You get a +2 on Knowledge (Arcana, History, or Religion) and can make these checks untrained. Also, once every five minutes, you can teleport up to 35 feet as a move action which functions as a (Su) ability. You do not need to be holding the Head of Vyrellis in your hands or in any particular slot, you just need to be carrying her in some capacity.

[ooc]Yep

"Indeed," Vyrellis responds to Krezen's inquiry, "That doth depict how I appeared in life, though who would create such a statue I knowest not. I am far from a well-known figure outside the Pyramid, and I was dead right before I was drawn in. I would be surprised if anyone in this entire plane, save the true Karavakos, knew me in life."

The statue's head unscrews easily enough. Although the inside of the statue is hallow, there is nothing in there. It's just an ordinary statue.

Vyrellis responds,
"He lived in a different world than I for most of my life. Shavarla, she is a pit fiend, and holds the allegience of a vast legion of creatures. Somehow, through means I know naught of, Karavakos acquired much of Shavarla's army. He brought his hoards of fiends to my world, the demiplane Coraria near Bytopia, as an invading force. My people were strong warriors, though, and Karavakos' fiendish legion was defeated. After losing, the few devils who remained in my world turned on Karavakos, their former lord, out of frustration at their loss or for some other, more sinister reason. The vile tiefling himself, however survived both our mages and his own former allies, and he later hunted me down as if he were an assassin. "

Forgeborn map Armorist(Symbiotic Knight) / Incanter 6 || HP 53/60; g

"Why you? because it truly was your demiplane?"

"No, I certainly did not rule over the realm. The fallen leader of a defeated invading army could not simply walk up to the leader of the plane that had defeated him. I hath no knowledge of why he sought out me, specifically, after his loss on the battlefield. Mayhaps Karavakos had many targets, and I was merely the one unfortunate enough to be closest to him when the fiends caught up with him."

Ok, I need a recap - we have the Tome of Vecna's Breath, correct?

One question about the Eladrin who requires assistance with his petrified brother - he has the statue with him, correct? I would say we should try to find Harumon, and see if he can be of assistance?

And I think we are done with this room - all agree?

"Ok then, I believe it is time we left" - the pragmatic soldier puts in - "Shall we go guys?"

I say we head to the chamber on the first floor to the southwest of the Grand Stairs, and try to find Harumon?

"Yes, but let's take as many of these books with us as we can. I hate the idea that those lizards will show up and eat them all."

I originally thought this would be a good spot for our camp, but if the room periodically spawns monsters then that's not so great.

Finding the room the Otyugh Empress referred to is pretty easy: it's just to the south of your base of operations. When you get back to your base assuming you stop there to rest, since you are all somewhat worn out from the last two battles), it is much as you left it. Mundarion, De'arv'ki, and Yessai are still there, as are Sorjla, Hozela, and Hathnor.

In your sleep, you see the Pyramid burning again. This time, the cackling voice of Karavakos comes through:
Good, good!
As his voice echoes in your minds, the tiefling materializes, somehow more solid and real in your dreams than at any time he has previously made himself visible to you in the waking world.
Only one Splinter remains.

When you are ready, the door to the south opens to reveal long, hooked corridor. A number of mirrors hang upon the outer wall. A set of double doors hang in the opposite wall, across from the mirrors.

Three people are present in the chamber: an ifrit, a gnoll, and a kasatha. The door creaks loudly enough to make a stealth entry infeasible, and all three look up when you enter.

"Who--"
the ifrit starts to speak before interrupting herself
"Ah, it is you, the ones many have been talking about recently. Why have you come to our home here?"
There is still an air of mild alarm on her face, and the ifrit's voice shakes with timidness. The other two occupants of the room say nothing, but both look ready to attack if threatened.

Psst, players?

Jan smiles, and bows.

"We were hoping to speak to the one called Harumon. We are in need of his services, and hope to broker some sort of trade. Perhaps an exchange of favors. We mean no harm if you mean us none."

"I make Jan's words my own - well met, I am Krezen" - the half orc nods.

"S-so you want to speak to Harumon? Well--"

"I am here."

A soft but deep voice interrupts the ifrit, and from the next corridor a small, gray halfling emerges. His eyes full of exhaustion and age, but his legs are firm and confident in their steps.

"I take it you are the heroes whom my lady has asked to help restore me. As you may know, I was born half-fire-elemental, but I had all the fire power sucked out of me by a very disagreeable shapeshifter known in the Pyramid as Tala. She used to be an ally of the arboreans, but she recently betrayed them and now associates with the Shadow of Karavakos, on the third floor."

The halfling continues,

"If you really want to help me, you will have no easy task. There are only three ways that I know of to restore a drained half-elemental. The first is to harvest new elemental power directly from its plane of origin; this method is of course implausible given our current location. I am sure that if you had some way of getting to the plane of fire, you would not still be mucking about in the Pyramid of Shadows."

"The second method is to find another half-elemental of the same species, and suck their power. Even if you could find another half-fire-elemental in the Pyramid, it is not a fate I would wish on anyone else. "

"The final way is to find the person who took my essence and kill her."

Harumon reaches into his bag and pulls out an orb, roughly a foot wide, which seems as dull and empty a gray as the halfling's eyes. Yet, there is a dim sparkle to the orb.

"If Tala were to die, all of my power that she took, as well as that of anyone else she has so harmed, would be released. You can use this to break it back to me. I must say, I am grateful for your kindness. I have little of my own to offer you in return for what you are planning to do."

"Who else might have been drained?"

"There is no way of knowing,"
he responds,
"but I would expect she would mainly prey on Outsiders and those descended from Outsiders, since they are more vulnerable."

Krezen looks around at the others, than at Harumon again - "I have nothing again putting some sod in the Deadbook. Fact is we need your assistance in return" - he ponders - "But do you mind me asking why she would steal your fire power? Do you know?"

"I do not know,"
Harumon responds,
"There are several uses for raw elemental fire. Most of those uses are in weapons, but it can also be used to disable or seal interplanar portals. What Tala has to gain from such a use, I do not know, especially since there don't seem to be any portals leading out of the Pyramid of Shadows."

"Perhaps to disable whatever seals the pyramid here."

At the mention of 'preying on those descended from outsiders,' Jan swallows and looks around uncomfortably.

"You were unable to prevent this 'theft of power?' How did she do this to you? Is there no defense against it?"

"Perhaps this Tala simply wants an edge to use against the others in the Pyramid. You say she consorts with the Shadow of Karavakos, but does she have any other allies in the pyramid?"

"I do not know how to prevent Tala's magic. Maybe one stronger than myself could have resisted, but I could not. As to her other allies, I do not think she has any. As I said, she betrayed her previous allies, the arboreans, and the Shadow of Karavakos does not have many friends in the Pyramid."

no further questions from me

When you are ready, you start heading back to the third floor where the Shadow of Karavakos is supposed to dwell. Heading northwest from the stairway (the direction from which the shadows attacked you last time you were here), it does not take long to reach a branch in the hall. AG7-AG11 on the map of the third floor

To the east lies a solid steel, unadorned door.

To the south, the corridor opens into a wider chamber. The outer walls of the chamber are pitch black, but inside, there are translucent, purple walls that envelope the room in a maze. The purple translucent walls writhe with hideous, tormented forms emitting piercing screeches, desperate to escape. You can sort of see through the maze, but the purple things, whatever they are, make it a lot harder.

Knowledge (Arcana or Religion) 20:
The purple stuff are the trapped souls of past victems of the Shadow of Karavakos, turned into a maze. Though you can see through it, they act as barriers to living creatures. However, a shadow, should one be present in the room,
could pass through the purple walls unimpeded. Moreover, being next to the tormented souls is deeply unsettling for the living, and will hurt your mind over time. Any living creature who ends a turn on a spot adjacent to one of the purple barriers takes four damage.
This is a mind-affecting effect.

"Stay away from the purple walls. They will slowly drain the life from you if you stand next to them."

GM: Does the damage from the walls include if we are only adjacent diagonally?

"I think I can see few spots where there are passages leading out. If we move fast we could take refuge in one of those."

Jan pulls out one of his unfinished staves and murmurs a few words, running his hands over it. The staff begins to glow faintly.
