Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

Sandman's spittle catches the first ghoul full on, hardening instantly and trapping it in place. It continues to growl and scream in frustration as it struggles to break free from the spittle. The spittle begins to crack and tear in a few spots, but overall holds firm. The other ghoul continues on forward, oblivious to the other's plight and walks right into Fargrim's swinging chain. The strike is too much for the ghoul and it topples over into the water dead.

Fargrim's chain lashes out and fells the other ghoul. It remains in place thanks to the spittle, but ceases to move. The caverns suddenly grow eerily quiet.

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

As the grindylow comes to, it immediately wiggles and squirms as it tries to get free. After several minutes of questions, pain, and screaming, some information is extracted from the prisoner. Mostly it continues repeating the same threats. "The whale will eat you, eat you all. Yes, yes, and the mother will laugh."

It doesn't offer up any solid numbers, but when asked it simply replies with the biggest numbers it can think of. "Dozens, no, no, no, scores! Wait, no, hundreds, yes, hundreds. Or seven!" While the creature is somewhat intelligent, it is quite mad.

When probed about the layout it doesn't give up much more than "lots of tunnels. Filled with water. And traps!"

Frustrated that the torturing seems fruitless, Nivian turns to the others:"Pain does not seem to cause it to speak the truth. Do you think it's even worthwhile trying to ask for our missing crew or further information about this place?",
Nivian looks at the others, to see their judgement.
First two identical responses decide. If I should ask, I will, if you think it's pointless, I would slit his throat. I doubt he would tell us the location of the traps either..."everywhere", and I don't trust him to lead us someplace. Mother is probably a Martriarch, Whale could be some tribe totem they feed with victims, like a Hill Giant Ally for a tribe of Goblins or something-

Male Dwarf 4th Level Bloodrager (Untouchable Rager) | HP 46/46 | THP 0/8 | AC 17 (15) | T 12 | FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort +7 | Ref +3 | Will +4 | Init +4 | Perc +10 | Bloodrage 17/17

Fargrim smiles at Johara when he healing magic takes effect. "Thank you, dear." Regarding the grindylow, Fargrim simply shrugs. "It cannot hurt to ask it about them. If he replies with more nonsense, then just end it."

HP 41/41, AC 12, Touch: 10, Flat Footed 12, Fort +8, Ref +3, Will +6, Init +0, Perception +2 | Scarshield 4/4, Kit 8/10, Active Effects: Mage Armor, Ironskin, Longarm, Enlarge Person, Dancing Lights, Prestidigitation Crew

Or it could be an actual whale. An Orca or something.

Sandman had dawned his mask and explored the creature's strange anatomy with his obsidian blade. In spite of his skill at torture, he did not seem to be enjoying himself. He was not a sadist. He went about his task with the grim resoluteness of someone cleaning a bilge.

Torture wasn't really reliable. There was a point of pain where a person will say anything to get it to stop. There is another point of pain at which the brain will essentially shut down and not really feel anything anymore. Those two points were different for everyone, and often had very little to do with each other.

It is a frighteningly easy thing to inflict more pain on a person than their mind or body could handle. Far more difficult is to inflict just enough pain upon someone that the body stays receptive and the mind remains alert, but still in enough pain that the thought of more has more effect than the reality of more.

Sandman was quite good at finding that line.

"It is speaking truth. We know there are watery tunnels full of traps, their leader is called Mother and the most dangerous thing it knows is called Whale. We also know that it cannot count."

"Ask about our crew. Then ask about Mother and Whale."

Sandman cleaned his obsidian knife off in the murky water and waited to see if he needed to do more.

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

"Aaarggeh. It stops! No cuts! The whale, he is us. He is the mother's. Mother puts yous in cages with rest. Waits for whale to eats. AAaahhhhh. STOPS!" It's not hard to tell that the creature is terrified. In continues to squirm against it's bindings and now cries out even before the knife cuts.

"So. This Whale is one of them. He serves their Mother. A matriarch and her enforcer."

When he wore the mask, his voice was unpleasant, like it was coming from far away, and had another voice overlapping with it.

"The rest... That will be our crew. Where are the cages?"

Female Undine Sea Witch 2 | HP 16/16| AC 17 Touch 13 Flatfooted 14 | Saves F 3 R 3 W 4 | Init 3 | Darkvision 60, Perc 7 , Swim Speed 30(Aquatic, Amphibious)

Interesting, I fully expected to use the alternate use skills for heal, the torture stuff - which would not only have fit thematically but also had meant your skill in medicine would come into play - also, yeah, lets assume I translate perfectly well and you reach this conclusion, because otherwise you would have to trust what I claim, not understanding the creature yourself-

"I think it can count, and it should know we will slay their precious whale and mother if they don't unhand our crew...maybe even so, to secure this island. But if you have confidence enough in your skills to believe it, I'll gladly let you take point."

Aquan: "So, where are the cages? If we end up in them anyway, we can save mother the trouble and head right there- My friend wants to continue learning about your body using his knife, if we don't get moving soon, so speak!"

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

To be honest, I missed that use for the Heal skill but we can use that in future interrogations. I'm not sure it would have been useful in this instance since it takes an hour and then they get a Will Save. Regardless, once you have prisoners on board your ship, I'm sure it'll see some use.

The grindylow just whimpers and points south east.

HP 41/41, AC 12, Touch: 10, Flat Footed 12, Fort +8, Ref +3, Will +6, Init +0, Perception +2 | Scarshield 4/4, Kit 8/10, Active Effects: Mage Armor, Ironskin, Longarm, Enlarge Person, Dancing Lights, Prestidigitation Crew

I assumed that was essentially what Sandman was doing. I just didn't want to make a big description of torture, or make a roll without the GM asking for it. Assume Sandman Took 10 on "Heal" for torture, whatever that means.

There's a whole lot of reasons that it's something Sandman is good at. I just didn't want to get to squicky with my descriptions. Stuff like this is better implied, in my opinion.

Sandman puts the creator out of it's misery with a quick thrust of his knife through it's ear canal and into it's brain.

He took his mask off, looking a little sad as he cleaned his knife and hefted his warclub.

"Let's go."

Female Undine Sea Witch 2 | HP 16/16| AC 17 Touch 13 Flatfooted 14 | Saves F 3 R 3 W 4 | Init 3 | Darkvision 60, Perc 7 , Swim Speed 30(Aquatic, Amphibious)

Nivian nods approvingly when Sandman slays the creature, having wanted to execute it prior to these last questions already.
Aye. Don't ask. Do. You are your own Woman now, Nivian. Old habits die hard, but it' no good being subservient. Walk your own path, and force acceptance.
"South east, then? I would prefer retrieving our crew intact, and the longer we dally, the less likely that will work out."

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

The pirates trudge on through the knee-high murky water. The tunnel heads south east but soon enough turns and bends and splits in several directions. After a few dead ends and circling around once or twice, they end up in a four-way intersection. To the north, are two grindylows. To the east are two more grindylows. To the north west is the biggest grindylow you've ever seen and a few more grindylows. All of the grindylows look on with bared teeth and looks of hatred, but something is holding them at bay. At least for the moment.

What could only be described as a female voice calls out in a language that is foreign to most, emanating from the north west passage. The large grindylow holds up a hand and beckons you on.

Aquan:

"Come and barter with me. Perhaps we can come to an arrangement."

Nivian attempts to hold back Baltzar.

Aquan:
"If you wish to barter, it should be you coming. I have trouble concentrating on the topic at hand if I need to worry about my escape route being cut off."
, then turns to the others:"She wants us to come talk about agreeable terms. Can't say I like this setup very much. Told her to come to us if she wants to parley."...

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

Aquan:

"Oh very well. If you insist."

The queen comes into view, escorting two bound prisoners. She pushes them towards the large grindylow who grabs one with each hand and licks his lips.

Aquan:

"Now don't eat them unless I tell you to."

The large grindylow frowns and nods. The queen turns back to the pirates and slowly approaches as another grindylow walks in front of her.

Aquan:

"Now. What have you come to offer me?"

The roll20 map has been updated.

Do we recognize the crew/prisoners?
"I don't like this one bit, but if we are to retrieve our crew unharmed, we may need to...compromise."...fearing that the Queen MAY actually understand them, she continues:"The same way as with Mister Plugg. Do what is necessary, at such time as it is asked for."

Aquan:
"What is it you would request for us to take possession of our property again?", Nivian asks, waving at the 2 hostages dismissevely.

Just asking what she'd want in the first place...to see if talking makes sense.

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

Aquan:

"Foods! Yes, yes. Yous brings us mores to eat, brings us others. Yes, yes. We's needs eats!"

At hearing this, the large grindylow takes a big bite out of the Rahadoumi sailor. The sailor screams in agony as the "Whale" crunches merrily. The mother immediately turns around and shouts at the Whale.

Aquan:

"No! No eats yet! I not say eats!"

The Whale frowns but continues chewing on his mouthful. He nods his humongous head and makes no further attempts to eat the prisoners.

DC 20 Sense Motive:

The Mother is not likely to keep her word and only really appears to be trying to show off her power before her minions.

There's little places on the map to move for non-melees. Also@Baltzar: Did you ever upgrade to Level 3? You seem to still be at level 2...@Sandman: I suggest we try the Whale next turn, but I figure if we manage to "sleepify" mom, he may be puzzled at what to do, he doesn't seem to be very bright, so it would be a 2-for-1 deal which is why I targeted her first.

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

Baltzar, you make take your round 1 action if you wish and are not considered threatened, but please distinguish between your round 1 and round 2 actions. Unless the eastern grindylow is incapacitated before your round 2 action, you will be considered threatened for the round 2 action.

Fargrim's chain strikes down the grindylow bodyguard, leaving it floating in a pool of it's own blood. The queen shudders suddenly as Nivian's curse attempts to ruin her luck, but she is able to shake it off. She screams out in a strange language before retreating back into her sanctuary. Once safely away from the pirates, she waves her arms and chants. The Whale tosses his helpless snacks to the side and lumbers forward licking his lips. The two grindylows to the north retreat further back into their tunnel. The rest of the grindylows swim forward to engage the invaders. The two in the lead stab forward with their spears but impale nothing but water, one missing Sandman and the other missing Fargrim.

The water is about 3 feet deep, providing enough room for the grindylows to swim except for the Whale. This means all squares are difficult terrain for you. No swim checks are required.

Baltzar, you're not able to get to the wounded sailor to heal him yet. He's too far away and there are too many enemies in between you and him. There is one grindylow that is currently adjacent to you (for your 2nd turn). For your 1st action I would suggest a buff, debuff, or ranged attack.

Johara lightly touches Sandman to get his attention briefly, then she starts to hum and sway. Unlike her earlier rapid acrobatic dances, this is a more sedate, simple back-and-forth, with heavily-lidded eyes and a gentle rocking reminiscent of a mother sending her baby to dreamland.

Since I can't get past #7 to get into the fray, lullaby just past Nivian to try to get 2, 3, 4, and 7. Will save DC 14 or they take a -2 on saves vs. sleep, which will hopefully help with slumber hexes!

Can't access the map currently. Would it really make a difference as to waiting on the Whale's turn? If so, consider it a ready action. Otherwise I would prefer to do it as Standard so I can follow up with a "cackle" to prolong the effect for a round, giving me the libery to do a move action at a later time without allowing it to break free.

Feeling the strong mental resistance of the queen, Nivian instead focuses her mind on the "Whale", trying to curse him instead.
"Devilfish incoming, as well.", she states, using it as a vocal staccato over the two-voiced singing she manages thanks to dual respiratory systems.
Standard(or Ready) to curse Whale, move to Cackle/Sing if applicable, free to speak. I figure the reflavor to cackle works better with some anatomic liberty that allows me to keep up the subvocal humming even as I speak, otherwise I would real-world-logically lock myself out of a game mechanic not supposed to be affected by a reflavor.

There are 3 regular grindylows between you and the Whale currently. I don't see any benefit as to waiting on him.

Johara's dancing seems to cause a couple of the grindylows to start yawning while others continue to grin maniacally. Nivian's curse doesn't seem to bother the Whale as he waits on his smaller brethren to move out of his way.

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

Baltzar's claws leave a trail of blood running down the grindylow's face. It shrieks in agony, but continues to fight on. Fargrim's chain is less forgiving. It crashes into a grindylow, shattering it's ribs and bone fragment pierce it's heart. It slips quietly into the water, an expression of agony frozen on it's face. The chain swings on but misses the second grindylow by inches.

One grindylow stabs his spear at Baltzar, but fails to pierce her defenses. Another tries to impale Fargrim, but is too afraid of the dwarf's devastating chain to make a serious effort. The Whale is unable to move through the small tunnels with his smaller brethren occupying it as well so he waits impatiently. The Queen chants again in Aquan while tracing sigils in the air. Fargrim begins to feel his chain grow cold, but it quickly fades as his dwarven heritage shakes off the magic spell.

A few more grindylows funnel into the chamber to join the fight. A purple, seven-armed octopoid monstrosity the size of a horse with hook-lined tentacles follows behind them.
