Cyrioul steps naturally into the Overseer role for the hideout. Gathering the various materials available to the group, he prepares to put the forge to work on enchanting items for general use...

GM: At this point, barring serious tragedy, we should be fairly stable in terms of the foraging/hunting checks that we would need to make, but let me know if you need a list of who would actually be available for drafting into a Team and I'll get it ready!

Bree works in the ambassador role, possibly spymaster. heh, 15 point builds are barely suited for any of these roles :)

Seems like about the only role Boudra could fill well would be Ambassador, though I suppose anyone could be a Strategist or Commandant. I find it hard to picture Boudra undertaking the tasks normally assumed for those roles, though!

Boudra spends the days that the storm pounds down over Hidden Hope making sure that everyone injured is on their way back to health, and scouting the caves in detail to make sure that there are no nooks and crannies holding valuable herbs that she's missed. Now that they're not actively engaged in fleeing, she retreats a little bit from the social scene (always hard for her to enter in any case) and spends more time by herself.

Cedric spends the intervening time splitting time between his role supervising the high-level organizational decisions, helping to acquire food for the settlement, and providing emotional support and grief counseling to their band of survivors.

As a follower of Ol' Deadeye, the stability and growth of this community is his top priority.

How about this: Cyr has overseer (variable stats, but using Int for secrecy), Cedric with Commandant (who I will now think of as Colonel Klink, non-stat dependent), Thorek as marshal (high Wis), Lily should go with spymaster (high Dex), Boudra with Ambassador (high Cha), and Bree can take strategist(non-stat dependent). How does that sound?

Ok by me.

With officer positions assigned, the next decision to make is which organization check you want to focus on: Loyalty, Secrecy, or Security. This determines which one progresses more quickly, similar to how different classes focus on different saves.

After that, you can decide whether you want to deposit any gold into the treasury, then decide how to use your two Militia Actions for the week. You can either recruit two teams, or recruit one team and drill the militia. For now, recruiting teams represents assigning specific duties or training to the refugees, but in the future it will represent new people flocking to your cause.

Secrecy or Security gets my vote for org check. As for actions, drilling the Militia + recruiting a team to use the Surveil action would dovetail with our search for the Chernasado Rangers and maybe reveal more of what's in the neighborhood.

We are definitely more focused on just hiding right now, so I think that those make sense. I need to read the descriptions again, but I might prioritize Secrecy, and definitely agree that the action to Surveil makes a lot of sense.

First Militia Week:

Upkeep Phase:
Training Attrition, DC 10 Loyalty Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Training level cannot be decreased below 0.

Activity Phase:
Recruit Team, Informants, DC 10 Loyalty Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Drill Militia, DC 10 Loyalty Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Training Score Increase: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 4) + 3 = 10

Event Phase:

Event on 91-100: 1d100 - 5 ⇒ (73) - 5 = 68

With the burden of finding shelter and food lifted, there is more time for the refugees to prepare themselves to become the free militia that the Nirmathi transform into during times of war. Under Cedric's guidance, with aid from Caladra, their initial training progresses well. Half a dozen of the people under your Hemlock Banner even take to surveying the surrounding woods. Although it would be too generous to even call them amateur rangers, they should serve well to keep tabs on travelers and events in the area.

The week remains damp. Although the worst of the storm passes after two days, smatterings of rain pass through over the proceeding days.
Pila is the first to notice the arrival; she sniffs the air, and soon her fur bristles, thus alerting Thorek.

In the clearing at the foot of the outcropping, not far from the entrance to Hidden Hope, a harsh voice barks out in halting Common.

"Children of the Stone! I come on behalf of Sergeant Scarvinious, an officer of General Azaersi, to negotiate an alliance!"

From his words, it is clear that this is an emissary from the Ironfang Legion! However, it seems that he believes the cavern to still be under the control of the troglodytes, unaware that you have taken over and moved in.

"Keep quiet, and don't let them see you," Thorek whispers to the guards at the gate and slips back into the caves.

"We have trouble," he warns the others, expression grim. "Looks like the Ironfangs sent at least one emissary to treat with the troglodytes--at least, the hail was for the Children of Stone, so I don't think they know it's us here now."

Boudra immediately looks alarmed. We need to decide what we're going to do, and quickly. she signs. Do we have any way to fool him into thinking the troglodytes are still here? She directs the last question at Cyrioul--in part, evidently, because he can read her signs, but in part because she seems to think he might be the one to offer a solution, as well.

Thorek: the take-back is fine. No problem.
Although Pila isn't warmed up enough yet to be considered a real animal companion, I wanted her to confer some benefit for having "rescued" her, so I decided she would provide an early warning of the Ironfang emissary's approach.

Lily:
Outside Hidden Hope, you find a broad-shouldered hobgoblin, clad in a polished breastplate, dismounting from a massive, ornery black wolf. A dark green cloak draped over his shoulders sways as he moves, although it is weighed down by bits of leaves and twigs stuck to its surface.

"I carry a message from Sergeant Scarvinious himself," the hobgoblin calls out. "This will likely be your last chance to ally with the Legion and earn an honored place among the vassals in our coming empire."

With your cooperation, we can better watch this region for the human remnants. I remind you, though: this land already belongs to the Ironfang Legion, even if you do not accept it. You can be our vassals, or our slaves. And if you cannot even handle a pink-skin rabble, you have no hope of enduring the Legion's might."

Your ruse has worked perfectly: the hobgoblin emissary truly believes you are one of the troglodytes from this tribe, formerly known as the "Children of Stone." Unfortunately, that means you are now subject to the same heavy-handed diplomacy the Ironfangs had prepared for the trogs.

Boudra paces anxiously deeper within the caves, waiting for the others to bring her word of what’s transpired. She checks her healing supplies again and again.

The hobgoblin ambassador curtly nods his assent.

He approaches with something in his hand. When Lily, glamoured as a troglodyte, recoils at his approach, the hobgoblin stops. Instead, he tosses the object towards her; it rolls across the mossy ground before coming to a stop not far from her foot. It appears to be a sheet of parchment wrapped around a stone.

"I will bring your request to Sergeant Scarvinious," he says. "If there is no issue, your first batch of sacrifices will be delivered within a fortnight."

The hobgoblin mounts his dire wolf steed and makes a quick exit, quickly vanishing into the forest.
The parchment left behind bears a message written in crude but legible Common Taldane.

Message:
"My troopers carry this gift to you to show our intentions. Together we can tear our enemies to pieces, their arms ripped from their living bodies, and their heads screaming as we wrest them from their necks. We've slaughtered or enslaved all in the human town save for a few weak stragglers now lost in the woods. We can hunt them down as one, or we will be done with your claims to this region."

I will hold of Aiding Another for now, so we're moving a little bit faster.

Although the hobgoblin ambassador travels alone, his trail is easy to follow, owing both to its freshness and the size of his dire wolf mount's paws. Additionally, as you trace the tracks through the forest, Boudra observes that the hobgoblin seems to stop frequently. At certain clearings or landmarks, as best as can be gleaned from the tracks, he will bring his wolfish steed to a quick halt, remain in place for a time, then proceed onward.

Putting your heads together, the party reasons that he is either keeping alert for danger or perhaps pausing to check a map to find his way back to base. This second option is far more promising, for it means an easy and certain trail to locating the Ironfang forward camp.

Regarding this Trail:
Survival DC 14 to follow this trail. The Ironfang camp is about 10 miles northwest of Hidden Hope, thus a total of 10 successful Survival checks would normally be needed.

However, because the ambassador relies on a map to find his way back and thus stops regularly, almost leaving waypoints on his travel, I will rule that only a total of 5 successful checks are needed.

Also, since Boudra's first check succeeded by more than 10, I will also rule that you get a +2 bonus on the next check, representing how you have identified his travel pattern.

I think it best if we let him reach the camp, we're moving too slowly to make our move right away. Once we know where their base is we'll have the advantage!

The dwarf muses for a long moment, then starts signing again. I think some preparations might be in order, like prepping alchemist's fire to burn tents & supplies, or waiting for a rainy night to wash away our tracks so they can't follow us back to Hidden Hope. As the ideas gains steam his signing becomes more jerky with enthusiasm. Maybe prepare an ambush location? Strike the camp, fall back back to prepared ground and bloody the pursuit, then make our getaway for real!

While Phaendar lies to the southwest, outside the forest and beyond the river, the hobgoblin's trail leads northwest, more deeply into the forest. This ambassador was likely sent from an Ironfang forward camp, established to hunt down both the refugees and the rangers.
