I certainly am. I'm just wondering if you planned for this character to appear or if it was an off the cuff response to my character's habit of extended pacing.
Connacht Metayer |
Yes, but is it the Barnum effect or just vauge oracle speak? That's what's tricky to tell.
Connacht Metayer |
I was suspicious of the entire thing at first, as was my character. He continued to be suspicious up until the fortune teller started getting specific enough.
At *this* point connacht has bought into it. That’s not to say he *trusts* Viorec for a moment, but that he’s categorized Viorec into the “slippery people with actual magic” category vs “just a common charlatan”.
At this point I think it’s probably the real thing. But now that you mentioned this *I’m* second guessing. Well done.
Connacht Metayer |
This entire scene has become way more intense than I thought it would be. Bravo to you good sir.
Connacht Metayer |
Well, that’s not concerning at all. Definitely going to be checking that later on.
Rudabeh |
Wooooooooow. Now that was a scene. Nice work GM, I was on the edge of my seat while reading through the whole thing! Fantastic writing from both of you, really.
That love-bite though... that uh... huh. That's probably going to have some significance.
Connacht Metayer |
Possessing the part of someone’s body when you scry on them gives them a -10 on the save to avoid it. And there’s probably some other magical nastiness to consider that I don’t know about.
Totally worth it for the great scenario though. 8/8 would get ate again for.
Connacht Metayer |
Sorry for the delay. Work is going to be really busy the next two weeks. I should have a post up tonight, but just due to the nature of things posting will be kind of sporadic from here on out.
Connacht Metayer |
Well, that took long enough.
Posting is going to be sporadic for another week and a half, but hopefully a bit more reliable than last week. That's just the nature of the line of work I'm in at the moment during this time of year.
Connacht Metayer |
Oh no, nothing so illustrious as that. I am working on a political campaign though for the time being, not as the guy running for office though.
Should have a post up later today!
Connacht Metayer |
Well, that's finally over! I should be able to return to a nice and steady rate of posting every day.
Thank you for your patience!
Connacht Metayer |
We won by a decent margin- it was the governor’s race in Texas.
Anyways, now that all the loose ends from that are taken care of, I greatly look forward to getting back into the swing of things with this!
Connacht Metayer |
No need to apologize. I’m just glad I don’t have to make any gut wrenching decisions just yet. For now, Connacht will enjoy his breakfast, but I look forward to whatever you have cooking for lunch.
Connacht Metayer |
Oh yeah, that was excellent! I can’t wait to see what (if anything) that all winds up foreshadowing, but for now setting the scene is fine. I’m just glad I won’t be slowing down the game anymore with a lousy posting rate.
Connacht Metayer |
Well, it looks like lunch just arrived early! I'll have to rely on the old spell list I have for now it seems.
Connacht Metayer |
Well, the bad news is I don't think I have time for armor. Thank goodness for having bark skin prepared from yesterday.
In any case, you certainly did spice things up, and if it helps advance the plot all the better!
Connacht Metayer |
Alright, this is going to be a hell of a fight. As such, I’ve got a few questions about the surroundings any my options because I need every advantage I can get.
1. Am I correct in understanding that the caravan (and the endless way) is at a lower elevation from the surrounding countryside? And if so, by how much? And is there a clear way for me to get to said elevation without taking any significant detour?
2. The spell https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/s/shifting-sand/. Does the terrain in this area qualify for use of the spell?
3. Regarding the bandits, how heavily armored do they seem to be? How much metal do I catch reflecting the sunlight?
4. How stringently are you going to enforce the “Creatures cannot be summoned into an environment that cannot support them” of summon nature’s ally. Sharks are out, obviously but what about, say, a lightning elemental?
Obviously, I have no intention of trying to defeat all of these people mysellf, even with summons and whatnot. The goal I have in mind is a mix of:
1. Moving the bandits attention away from the caravan until reinforcements (hoepefully? Please Lord Sabinus? ) arrive.
2. Convincing the bandits that this score isn’t worth it, and using the threat of “I’m just the vanguard of what you’ll be dealing with” to convince the bandits to scram, and quickly. ckly. They have to know how risky their position is, being so close to the town.
Just letting you know I’m not just running at the caravan suicidally without reason, and there is a method to the madness here.

What an excellent list of questions. I am sorry I didn't describe the landscape well enough! It's so tricky....
1. Yes and yes. The landscape is a broken series of ridges and hills (you stand on top of the tallest local one) and deep valleys (like where Wheldrake is). The Endless Way avoids both the highs and the lows. It is at the bottom of a series of slopes from you. No detour required, just some downhill running (although not as steep as the gully you climbed to get here).
2.It says 'earthen or sandy surface'. Considering it isn't just bare rock (although there is plenty of that on top of the ridges), you are fine. I'd say it would work in most places outside.
3. You don't see much armor at all. They look to be a pretty ragged bunch, from what you can see.
4. If it can breath or whatever it is fine. This is a magic spell, after all.
#2 plan is a solid one. Few fights are to the death, be they man or monster. To the pain is almost always more realistic.
Connacht Metayer |
Thanks for the clarification!
It has occurred to me in a horrifying realization that I never actually wound up finalizing my gear. In whatever rework is to come, any ammo I spend in this fight will be adequately provisioned for, if not more, and any gear I have with me now will stay. The only changes will be mild.
Hopefully, I'll sort it all out by Friday.
Rudabeh |
Connacht felt it the height of folly to be sentimental over sharp metal
The crossover has been CANCELED. The Sixth Peak would be highly offended, if it were sentient.

Yeah. I always like it when fights are run this way. Honestly that's why I've always thought undead are really scary- they don't stop when you start to win.
Connacht Metayer |
Just rolling the number of creatures summoned by the next spell so I know what I need to roll next turn.
1d3 ⇒ 1
Welp, that could have been accomplished by a level 2 spell. But it will have to do.
https://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/outsiders/elemental/elem ental-lightning/ going to be using this creature, by the way.
Connacht Metayer |
Well, let's just hope my build doesn't turn out to be trash. If so this will be a very anticlimactic ending to the campaign.
Connacht Metayer |
No kidding. Scatter shot isn’t always useful but this is basically ideal conditions for it.
Connacht Metayer |
Sorry for postponing the meet and greet with the new NPC's, but justice waits for no one.
Really though, I definitely want to try and get a live bandit and try and get him to fess up about the place the rest of them are staying.
GM Mowque |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
I thought you might pursue to some degree. Don't worry. Sometimes I push posts farther then seems prudent to help move things along. Dont' worry about doing your own thing. A very soft retcon (like here, you started moving and acting before the dwarf got to you unlike my post indicated) is fine for me and good for the game.

Gotcha. I’ll keep that in mind for the future.
Not gonna lie I did expect to have to put a few more people in the dust before the bandits broke apart, but it does make sense. Besides, it lets me get through the first fight of the game without a scratch, so how awesome is that?

A few questions for the sake of order.
1.Does the legal code / established precedent of Taldor make any meaningful distinction between murder and attempted murder?
2. What roll do the nobility of Taldor have (in both theory and practice) in the delivering of common justice. In other words, how likely is Sabinus to demand custody of the unlucky bandit I took alive?
3. Giving a reduced sentence to prisoners who rat out their co-conspirators isn’t unheard of in Taldor, right? You’ve probably guessed that’s what I’m going for, I’m just wondering how much flack my character would be expecting for giving it a shot.
GM Mowque |
1. Not much although the average Taldane court understands 'extenuating circumstances'
2. In theory nobles are military commanders of their holdings, although that has long fallen out of disuse in the Empire proper due to the growth of a civil court system (which is used by the Emperor as a check on the nobility). You can expect someone like Sabinus to demand total control and she would be right (although the fact she is a woman would strictly speaking invalidate things, but on the Other hand, Trenzi probably has some moldy law that backs up female inheritance). Basically, it's complicated but expect trouble.
3. The law is very flexible in Taldor. Even more so out here, which is sort of in Taldor and sort of not. (basically where Connacht is standing is taldor, lol).
GM Mowque |
Just as an aside, do not be worried about pursuing the bandits too aggressively or it might 'mess up the story'. The bandits are going to be the least of your problems, soon.
I only say this because sometimes player's to try and help the narrative by not doing certain things. This is greatly appreciated, just not needed in this instance.
(However, rushing off alone into the wilds is a Bad Idea)
