The Avalon Chronicles

Game Master lynora

This is a high level rules light game set in a school for magical kids, kinda a mash-up of Soul Eater, Harry Potter, and X-Men. :)

So skinwalker, the official watered down lycanthrope has "Always Alignments," but the actual Lycanthrope doesn't? -_-

Skinwalkers have typical alignments, not always.

Had some thoughts. I know, for me, having a thought at all is rare, so thoughts plural must've made you fall out of your chair. But here me out. :P

1. Is there a cure for normal lycanthropy in game? Like werewolf lycanthropy?

2A. Are all of the gem planets claimed? I think I offered to operate one and it was still up in the air. How many were there?

2B. OOOOHHHH it just occurred to me that if I can do one, it could be Alocatra(Tybs' planet for those that are new) and the dominant gem dragons there could be the ones Lyn and I talked about which would be sooooooo coooooool!

3. Has anyone ever considered the plane that we summon unseen servants from? Just a plane full of incredibly polite invisible people. They just constantly bump into each other because none of them can see each other. And they're just like "oh, pardon me good sir." "No, no, pardon me. I must say that if I could see your suit it would be impeccable today." "Why thank you. I assume the same of you as well, sir."

4. CELESTIAL KNIGHT. Apologies. I said we had only done a couple class, but I forgot to mention it's lunch right now...

In order:

1. Lycanthropy works as written. So the answers given already on the subject are correct. The twist is that lycanthropy, the magical disease, was created by someone trying to imitate Lycans. Lycans were a relatively peaceful people to begin with. Strong warriors (hence the desire to imitate them) but also bound by strict codes of honor. Because of the crimes committed by lycanthropes, Lycans were blamed. They were hunted and persecuted and that is how their current fairly brutal society developed. There are no Lycans left on non gem dragon worlds because of the false belief that they were contagious. They were hunted to extinction in the Empire. So....basically Lycans have a bone deep ancestral hatred of lycanthropes. The most reasonable Lycan will still try to claw the face off of a lycanthrope if they meet them. The most strongly good Lycan will still be growling and hostile toward a lycanthrope. It's not a matter of earning their trust. It's a matter of instinct. So that is a dramatic obstacle that would be facing any character with lycanthropy. Which isn't to say you can't bring one in, just want to make sure that you know ahead of time what you would be getting yourself into. Also, can work with making a cure more difficult, long term, etc if necessary for drama. Could have them be allergic to wolfsbane or something. So it's even more deadly and therefore an alternative has to be researched. Still wouldn't take forever, but it could be dragged out until the matter came to the attention of a more prominent staff member, or very resourceful fellow student, much like what happened with Ginni when she contracted a magical disease.
As far as alignments go, please remember that we play fast and loose with the alignment system in this game. It's basically an academic argument here. I find that alignment often becomes a straightjacket rather than a tool so I mostly ignore it. I consider the results of detect spells to be basically a fuzzy average. Sometimes that gives funny results. A couple of characters detect as both strong evil and strong good. Anyhow, as far as the potential assigned alignments of lycanthropes, there are none. Even if the rules said there were, there wouldn't be. Alignment is on an individual basis and for some individuals the answer is it's complicated.

2. I don't believe all of the gem planets were claimed. To my knowledge only two were claimed. Since it was first, I already started to introduce Haven (crystal). Next is Annwn (emerald), Lemuria (sapphire), and Nibiru (topaz). FCD claimed Lemuria, and I think DB3 claimed Annwn, but it might have been Nibiru, so I would need him to confirm which one it was. Agartha, Haven, Annwn, Lemuria, and Nibiru are all of the gem dragon worlds.
Alocatra could potentially come in later as a part of the systems alliance or whatever we call it presuming we can ever get this thing to come together in the first place. It just can't be one of the original five.

3. *snicker* I find this image amusing. Especially considering the way my down on her luck noble that I play in my real life game constantly casts unseen servant. She seriously carries a whole bunch of scrolls of it around with her so she doesn't have to actually do stuff for herself. :)

been working night shift and right now my real mind is as jumbled as Ginni's is.

trying to make sense of stuff and decide on what to say...

I do know I need to move Lang's story forward, and I am going trchno blank with Mel at the moment.

she isn't used be told she is wrong.... (which is probably why mel gets in trouble frequently.)

I believe I had the Sapphire dragons, if that helps.

Yep it does. I remembered it backwards. You have Lemuria and FCD has Annwn and nobody has Nibiru at present.

Hey Lyn, I know we sort of allow 3.x stuff, especially if its fitting, and I was curious if that would include the numerous 'other' dragons that have been created, be they planar, or some of the other colors(Yellow, Purple, Brown, etc) that are currently not found officially in Pathfinder.

Also, what's the role of Drakes in this setting?

What if X is the original name of the planet, and the one used on the main island, but each of the races on the planet calls it something different based on their name like Alocatra?

I just think the tie in of the Grandes being one of the Gems works really well.

And if topaz is the one that's not taken, that works even better. Topaz looks like glass and comes in every color.

If there's no mental effect, why would you even want to get cured of lycanthropy?

Shadow Lodge

There's is a mental effect: not always having control of when you turn. and following animal(neutral alignment) instincts.

That can mean anything from hiding to attacking to hibernating and so on.

Ah. That makes sense.

Well, I finally got caught up. I even read a fair bit of the stuff outside the storyline I was in. :)

On Agartha Drakes were hunted to extinction during that whole anti dragon thing. Not that there were many there to start with.

I have brought in some of the other dragons on a case by case basis, but for the most part anyone who didn't fall in line with chromatic or metallic was destroyed. The gems hid. Some few others hid. But for the most part non-standard dragons are either dead or servants of the ruling dragons in the Empire. They are not present on gem dragon worlds. There aren't many in the Empire either. There just plain weren't many of them to start with.

(Confession time: I don't really like most of the less common colors of dragon. They don't fit well into the cosmology, especially for this game. So I came up with that whole explanation previously as a permanent excuse to not have to bring them in.)

In our previous discussion, did gem dragon religion ever come up? Shoot me a PM with the answer to that question and a quick refresher on the grandes to make sure I am remembering correctly and not mixing them up with something else. I think you were already skirting dangerously close to something with your concept that I need you to not do because of other background stuff that I've teased but not put out full explanations yet since its part of the Haven arc, and it makes a big difference to whether I can approve this idea. It was less of a deal when it was just one characters background, but we need to discuss in depth and make adjustments if it's for a whole planet.

Edit: Also there is the whole closed world thing. Tybs's backstory would need some serious reworking if this were true. Basically Agartha's wards broke due to lack of maintenance because the amethyst dragons were killed off. The other planets didn't have that problem. The biggest challenge in getting there is getting past wards. That's why the map book is so important. It's the only key that lets them past the other planets' wards.

Edit 2: even if Nibiru and Alocatra aren't the same world, doesn't mean you can't have Nibiru. We just need to discuss some details first since you've missed a lot of behind the scenes world building conversations.

Incoming, M'lady. ;)

Edit: Sent. :)

Lyn, fun idea on its way in a PM.

Male Drow (noble) 14 Ranger

I like the way Pathfinder handles dragons. They are for the most part the alignment in the stat block, but they can change over time. Chromatic's scales lighten as they shun evil, and Metallic's scales visibly tarnish as they embrace evil.
The only "yellow" dragon on Golarion was actually a tarnished Gold, who's decent into evil stripped his scales of their luster. When dwarves came upon his corpse, they thought they had found evidence of a new species of dragon. Alas, the story was much worse...

I think this can be used here, in this setting as well...up to Lynn, though, obviously.

Just my 2 cp.

Male Weremonkey Rogue/Ranger/Trickster

I like the purples, though I will totally admit, the main reason is their breath weapon: It's a freakin sword of force!! How do you not like that?! LOL

That's basically the amethysts. Their breath weapon is a line of force and they're purple. So yeah....no purple dragons. We already has plenty. :P

Unless Magic change his mind about running Nibiru, yes. Although I would be up for a team up on Haven if anyone wanted. I've only got the basics fleshed out so far. Nothing fancy.

Haven is very Avatar friendly if I recall.

I have ideas, but I doubt they'll work, honestly.

Uhh... I'd like that. A lot. Even though I'm a complete rookie at this game and have no authority or seniority whatsoever. Thing is, I'd have to work with you over eMail, as I will be on (enforced) hiatus from the boards for the duration of summer vacation.

I've been talking and thinking about it, and I might have some comparable ideas after all.

I got Icehawk's pitch for this via PM and it really fits well with what I already have, so I'm going to work with him on Haven.

But I'm sure there will be other opportunities for you to help work on pieces of setting design. Almost everyone does eventually. :)

Spending the day in the hospital waiting room as my husband is having eye surgery today. Fun times. </sarcasm>
Anyhow, I will be trying to post as I haven't got anything better to do with my time. But the hospital wifi is slow so no promises.

Magic, it's cool. I know you didn't mean anything bad by it. I'm not mad.

DB3, all Lysander has to do is open a door to the hourglass, something he will find way too easy to do....
Also Michael and Kitty already teleported back and we're having a conversation in the hallway. Not quite sure where we left that.

Kryz, I posted the intro for Kor already (Pyra in the office waiting for him to show) but I think you missed it. Go ahead and have him show up whenever.

Mostly brainstorming via PM. You bounce ideas off me and I come back with tweaks as necessary. I do a lot of stuff improv so it's not like everything needs to be fully fleshed out. And when we do get to Haven you'll have the opportunity to run NPCs for those scenes.

Hey Magic,

Where's Lim-Mor? I think it might be fun for him and Serrin to run across each other. She's just leaving the infirmary.

Everyone else is doing inventory, so might as well.

Archena- Jones' room
Fanz- Waits for students to finalize project.
Hermes- robot butler waits for orders
Kevin- Waits to know where to tell Jiminy to meet him
Lewis- Itty bitty jabberwocky panic attack
Rakki- awkward yokai
Sara- fuzzy
Tybs- freezer room with Pyry. Your ball, DB3. :)
Lim-Mor is wherever you want him. He's been off camera for a while. He can be on his way back to his room, but Serrin will need to initiate interaction. :)

Hey Magic, does Lim speak in three very different voices? If so, how you would describe each one?

Male Gian&Nero Half-Fiend Half-Celestial All Elf 3 cleric 3 wizard 10 mystic theurge / 8 fighter 8 gunslinger

It isn't necessarily three different voices. It's obviously not the same person talking. The inflection, tone, and mannerisms are totally different in each. But they might sound the same on the phone if you get what I'm saying. Like Johnny Depp is one person, but he's Jack, Wonka, and the old mafia guy in that new one. The same voice, but still very obviously different.

Gian's voice is higher pitched, slightly feminine, but not overmuch. He talks with his hands more and is generally more animated and expressive.

Lim-Môr always seems nervous when he's in control. He bites his lip, looks around a lot, and speaks in a mid range teenage voice. He's nervous and kinda teenager-chill-indifferent at the same time.

Nero always has the corner of his mouth turned up and eyebrows down and together, almost scowling like he is either disgusted or feels like he's above whatever is happening at the time. When he speaks it's deliberate and sparing, much like a mafia boss. He almost always has his arms crossed.
