Efin, you recognize it as an unholy symbol of Baphomet. In addition, the way he is holding it suggests he was using it as a divine focus for a spell. Definitely not something a crusader of Iomedae would have or use.

"Yeah, with her sword." Efin snorted. "...Actually, they probably never got close to her. Looks like a pair of infiltrators to me, maybe trying to cause trouble behind the scenes." her expression grew thoughtful. "So... infiltrators in town, around the same time the Wardstones fell..." Probably not a coincidence. The enemy was always trying to sneak in, true, but there was generally SOME kind of plan behind it.

"Infiltrators? No wonder the stones failed. This must have been a pretty elaborate plot. We have to get out of here and warn people. "

Crap, missed post by the GM when I did mine.

"My mistake." Shimmer looks over the chamber for a moment. "If the plant is dead it's possible there are others that survived. We should look for signs of passage and stay on guard."

"I'm good." Efin said. She preferred staying light on her feet - agility was her best defense. "Take anything you want, and I'll try and burn 'em afterwards, just so nobody can call them back." she added.

Since they're posing as crusaders, i assumed they had iomedaen holy symbols in addition to the hidden bull head symbols.

"That's a good point. There probably aren't many Grippli priests, but there's probably a lot of Tieflings. I might be able to pull off a disguise like that." Kel said.

After gathering the loot, you continue on. The tunnel winds north for about 1,000 feet (about 15 minutes of travel at a speed of 15 feet) before reaching a circular, 20-foot-diameter cavern. Four mongrelmen stand guard here before a large stone door. Since you are accompanied by Lann and the others, the guards greet their mongrel companions warmly. While they eye you with suspicion, Lann’s word is good enough to let them all enter the chamber beyond the door.

A small, dark lake ripples in the center of this two-hundredfoot- wide cavern, the walls and ceiling aglow with thick sheets of luminescent fungi. In the center of the lake, over two dozen low stone buildings cluster on a rocky one-hundred-foot-wide island. Lights glow in the windows of the buildings, giving the settlement an almost welcoming look. Rafts made of mismatched planks of timber bob along the length of a crooked pier at the lake’s closest shore.

Kel had never seen anything like this. He stood and stared for a while, taking in thew amazing sight.

As they walked toward the strange mongrelfolk city, Kel described it for Aravashniel.

"Amazing that this much could be down here without anyone above any the wiser. Looks like a good place to get some rest before we try to find a way to the surface. Best that we warn whomever is in charge he of what is going on topside. "

"Can you show us to whoever's in charge? At the very least, we should probably introduce ourselves." Efin said, looking over at Lann and gesturing for him to lead the way. This was getting more and more interesting - and the people down here might be just what they needed to turn this situation around. Yay!

"We will be meeting with chief Sull immediately." Lann says.

The boats and rafts easily support you and Lann and his companions row over with you. At the shore you are met be a contingent of guards and they escort you to the largest building atop the island’s low central peak. This is the home of chief Sull and you are let in after a short period after the chief speaks with Lann.

Inside you meet chief Sull. He is an intimidating and frightful presence. A huge, bloated and unpleasant looking person. One of his eyes is larger than the other and clouded white. However, when he speaks his voice is at odds with his appearance and he comes across as mild mannered.

"Welcome to Neathholm. We do not often get surfacers here. Please, tell me your story. I am told that Crel's survival is because of your aid. For that I thank you."

Kaval peered around at his companions before stepping forward. "Nice to meet you Chief Sull. My name is Kaval Treehopper. I live up on the surface in Kenabres where I am training to be a crusader. Or... at least I was. The city was attacked by demons, we were overrun, and Terendelev was slain by a massive demon. Moments before her death, she saved my companions and me by casting a spell right as a massive sinkhole opened up beneath us. When we gathered our wits, we found ourselves trapped in a cavern deep underground with the image of Terendelev's death fresh in our minds.

"After that, we started our journey to find the surface, defending our wounded from monstrous vermin and crazed dwarves. We even found an undead creature inside of a desecrated temple of Torag which we fixed up and spent the night at. When we found your friends we helped them pull Crel from the rubble and then came to see you. We had no idea Neathholm existed down here until Lann told us about it.

"I'd love to stay and chat, but my family is in danger with the demons in the city and I really need to go help them escape. Do you think you could help show us the way to the surface? Oh! And could my parents come and stay with you if we can't drive the demons away?"

Kaval paused for a moment to think, then added "Have you had any problems down here with the demons?"

Female Human Sor 2 / WrP 2 | HP: 20/20 | AC: 15 / T: 15 / FF: 14 | Fort: +6, Ref: +1, Will: +7 | M. Touch: +2, R. Touch: +2 | CMB: +2, CMD: 17 | Init: +7, Perception: +9 |

"Or anyone worshiping them?" Efin inquired, adding on to Kaval's question. "We found a pair of what looked like infiltrators, and when there're two, there's usually more." Though it would be pretty hard for, well, anyone to really sneak into this place. They probably knew their own people pretty darn well.

"Kaval got everything. We need to get back to the surface. I hope you know a way. "

"The dragon of Kenabres is slain!?" Chief Sull says with a horrified gasp.
"And the wardstone is destroyed. What a catastrophe."

He looks quite concerened.
"My kind may be outcasts and freaks in the eyes of uplanders like yourselves, but our ancestors helped drive back the demons in the First Crusade. I want the demons defeated as much as anyone who lives above."
He looks at each of you.
"If you are willing, please bring this message to the surface—that the mongrels will stand with the inhabitants of Kenabres to defend the city from the demon hordes. Tell them that we are ready to assault from beneath when they call!"

Outcasts? Well, that was one way of putting it, she supposed. Suppressing a grin of amusement, though, she bowed slightly to the chief of the mongrelmen. "May I recommend not waiting to make your preparations?" she asked. "What went on here had to have been noticed, after all, and I'm sure someone is doing something in response." After a thoughtful moment, she added, "Um, I wouldn't really mind a place to sleep, or some directions to the surface. If you're offering to help, there's got to be some exit you know about, right?" That was probably the best news yet.

"Any aid would be greatly appreciated. Also by chance do you have detainment facilities? One of those we encountered we managed to subdue. He is not in full possession of his wits, and may be a danger if allowed free. We will of course take him with us when we leave, but simply for his safety and others a place to keep him at bay would be of benefit."

ooc:
I believe Kel is the only one down HP, right? If given a rest, I'll use what spells/channels I have to heal everyone up.

"Yes, I can direct you to the way back up. Unfortunately the way is through a village of others like us, but who have given themselves over to the demons. The men you spoke of have been working with them and in recent weeks have especially active. I guess now we know why." Chief Sull responds.
"You are welcome to rest here as long as needed. There are merchants here who will be more than happy to exchange goods with you."

You can get a good rest and everyone can heal up. Aravashnial is excited and kind of makes a nuisance of himself. Horgus is horrified by the place and constantly badgers you to leave. Argus is also in a hurry, but more so because he worries about Irabeth.

"Relax, Horgus, it's safe here." Efin said confidently, thumping her chest a bit. "Look, if you're really that scared, I'll sleep between you and the door - but you really shouldn't judge people by their appearance, y'know?" With that, she nodded and wandered off to find someplace she could sleep. Rest would do all of them some good. She didn't really need to buy anything - not yet, at least - and planned to save her current coin for now.

Kel sighed. "Of course it is. Why wouldn't it be?" He chuckled to himself. "All this good luck we've been having had to run out sooner or later."

As Horgus complained Kel just shook his head. "Horgus, what if it had been you that had been blinded instead of Aravashniel? Would you even know these folks were different than us? It doesn't matter what someone looks like. Only matters what they do. Right now they're helping us, and we could probably stand to buy some supplies. You know some things about trading, right?"

"Aravashnial, why don't we let the others prepare for our journey while we go explore the town and meet the people?" Kaval offers. When things are settled, Kaval leads Aravashnial around, describing everything he can see. After an hour or two, they return to the rest of the group to bed down for the night.

When they rise in the morning, Kaval approaches Aravashnial again. "You're a wizard right? That means you need to use a spellbook to get your spells ready every day? If you have it with you, maybe... maybe I could help you get ready by reading the book to you?"

After their morning preparations and a decent breakfast, Kaval leads his eight companions to see Chief Sull again so they can get directions. "We could probably sneak past the demon-loving mongrel men, but perhaps it would be better to weaken their hold down here? If we drive them off we won't have to worry about them attacking us from behind, and it will allow our new friends to join us on the surface more easily.
"Chief Sull, do you have any idea how many of the mongrel men are in league with the demons? Do you know if they have any important things we could sabotage to drive them away?"
