Tatters of the King Part Deux

Game Master Jigamorphic

Hi, hi, hi me droogies,

GM Gluttony here wondering if there would perhaps be interest in some classic horror roleplaying using Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu RPG.

The focus on investigation and character as opposed to combat would make this the kind of game perfectly suited to the play by post format.

Now, I'd love to make a campaign from scratch, but unfortunately I have hardly the time at all, so I was thinking I'd fall back to a pre-written campaign. As far as setting I was thinking either 1920s (Masks of Nyarlathotep, Tatters of the King, Orient Express, etc.) or modern (Our Ladies of Sorrow, Unseen Masters, and so on).

I dunno if there are any veteran CoC players around, so I'm willing to GM for just about anybody, as long as there's interest.

Leave a reply, a question, a critique, anything you want; just let me know what you think (campaign preference maybe?).

Consider me interested. I'm a Lovecraft fan so I'd vote for the older time period.

Dark Archive

I am a fiend for Lovecraft. I would absolutely love to do Orient Express, or other 1920's investigations.

Glad to hear that there is at least a smidgen of interest. Any other takers?

I'd be keen to get all up in the 1920s. I have the rule book on my bookshelf: we endeavoured to get an IRL group together a year ago, but couldn't make our timetables work... I suspect cultists were involved.

Dark Archive

Mark me down as interested as well. I would like to play Masks of Nyarlathotep. It was many years ago when I played in a group that got part way through it. At least, I think that was the module we were playing. Our Keeper never told us what he was actually running. I haven't played any CoC before or since, but I would like to give it another try.

Liberty's Edge

I am interested! It's been about a decade since I last played in a CoC campaign, and I would love to play again!

Quick question to all who are interested: What published campaigns have you played/GM'd? I'd prefer to run something that's new and exciting for everybody.

I love me some Lovecrafty goodness.

I'd prefer 1920's, but I'd be up for either.

The concept that first jumps to mind is a classic film noir detective type hired to investigate something that quickly gets out of hand. This concept works pretty well for either setting.

I've only ever played homebrew CoC, so any of the modules would be new to me.

Dark Archive

I've actually never been through any of the published campaigns, but I hear that Orient Express is amazing.

I'd like to apply with this character. She was a hoot, but the campaign died. Hoping for the 20's

I probably should re'roll her stats however. I didn't do so good last time.

It seems to me that we'll be playing a 1920s era campaign, in case any of you want to start brainstorming characters.

Any other campaign suggestions besides/votes for Horror on the Orient or Masks (both of which I have heard are awesome)?

I'm game for either. Always wanted to try CoC out, but never got the chance.

Liberty's Edge

This is a character I made for a game that fell off the boards....

Wondering what version? I've access to chaosium's version 2.0 and 5.6.

I'd definitely be interested, I've been wanting to play CoC for ages now, but have never been part of a group that was keen. I have at least three concepts, any of which I'd be happy to stat out.

20s would be my vote.

Hmmm, I can't seem to find a pdf version of Horror on the Orient Express. And it's long out of print, so I'm unsure whether that campaign is going to be an option.

Would you like me to throw some character concepts together? It seems like the 20s are generally more preferred...

Anyone who wants to should start thinking up some character concepts (1920s). I think I know what campaign I'm going to run, so when I feel like it and have the time I'll through up a real recruitment page.

Hmm. I can't find a cheap pdf of the rule book. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You almost don't even need the rule book, the system being simple enough as it is. Heck, these quickstart rules have enough information to build a full character, and gameplay is usually just RP and skill checks.

Would you like attributes rolled here? If so:

3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1) = 9
3d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 2) = 10
3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 2) = 5
3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 2) = 8
3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 1) = 4
2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7
2d6 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6
EDU: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 4) = 9

Yuck! Now I'm hoping your response is, "No, I have this alternate method of attribute generation..."

Dark Archive

You should probably reroll those. You'd be institutionalized in the 1920's with stats like those. Or dead.

Dark Archive

Trying to build some kind of academic...
Str:3d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 5) = 13
Con:3d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 6) = 14
Dex:3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 3) = 8
Siz:2d6 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11
Int:2d6 ⇒ (5, 2) = 7
Pow:3d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 3) = 12
App:3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 4) = 7
EDU:3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 2) = 7

Dark Archive

Aaaand getting an uneducated moose.

Str: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 6) = 9
Con: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 1) = 8
Dex 3d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 5) = 13
Siz: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 2) + 6 = 12
Int: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 1) + 6 = 11
Pow: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 5) = 15
App: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 6) = 14
EDU: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 6) = 10

Liberty's Edge

Should I re-roll?

Dark Archive

Any chance I can move my stats around? I could definitely make a professor out of him if so.

You guys may be jumping the gun a little. :)

Failed SAN checks already!

Dark Archive

Probably, but I'm excited. CoC is amazing. =P

Also it can be hard planning for specific concepts when attributes are undefined, eg planning for an academic, then ending up with EDU 7 :)

Yikes this exploded faster than a crate of dynamite in a Mi-Go nest! Well maybe not, but at least I got to use the expression.

We're definately not going hardcore with the ability scores, those stats are just to gimpy. As soon as I have access to my rulebook I'll check out the alternate methods and pick one for us to use.

Best news all day :)

At this stage I'm thinking a French concert pianist that married an American woman who ended up going mad. He has since been exploring the occult, trying to find reasons behind his wife's sudden and inexplicable mental illness, which ultimately led to her death.

I'll continue to brainstorm other ideas though. Can you tell there's a few people excited by the possibility of this campaign? :)

Well this feisty Debutante is ready to roll, and see how she can be redefined at any time.

Liberty's Edge

Yes 90ish% completed characters....

(isabelle and Chang are from the same former game)

Liberty's Edge

No word?

Sorry folks, I've been quite sick for the past few days. All better now though, so expect an official recruitment thread by the end of the day!

My group has played CoC a few times, but only one shots, they're of the opinion that CoC and Campaign should not be in the same sentence :p

It's been a while since I've read the rules, so I'll wait until the recruitment's posted to do anything with stats, but I had the idea pop into my head of a person who's a bit of a weirdness magnet; his parents started to get involved with a cult (not necessarily an actual elder gods cult) when he was in early teens and he found himself being drawn into it by them. Things started going downhill and he finally got scared enough to run away, leaving his parents behind, and has been a bit of a drifter since encountering other horrible things along the way. He's a bit jumpy these days...

Liberty's Edge

Please remember to post a link when it goes official.....

Recruitment thread is up!

Sorry it took so long, I was finalizing my decision on which campaign to run, and crafting a nice little piece of Photoshop artwork to get us all in the mood! So head on over folks!
