GM Gluttony Proudly Presents:
Tatters of the King
Just imagine this image embedded here.
Wherein:
--------------The stars are right.--------------
Hastur's gaze gains brief focus upon the Earth.
--------------And things change.--------------
It is October 1928. London: the capital of an empire that covers a quarter of the globe and contains a quarter of the human race. The population busies itself with its concerns of politics and government, finance and production, work and recreation.
But how fragile things are.
What ignorance there is.
Welcome one and all to my latest campaign, a tale full of such Lovecraftian madness none other than Chaosium's Tatters of the King published for their classic 1920s horror roleplaying game Call of Cthulhu. If you fancy yourselves in need of some sanity-wrenching fun, simply step right up and crack out a character!*
*Inhuman entities need not apply.
To clarify, this is NOT a Pathfinder game, but will be played using the Call of Cthulhu system, which features the use of percentile die and having your face gnawed off by otherworldly beings. This campaign, however, is just a tad more atmospheric than your Call of Cthulhu adventure (especially the 'pulp' ones like Masks of Nyarlathotep) and focuses very much on roleplaying and investigation as opposed to combat. All in all, the system is relatively rules light, allowing even those without the rulebook to easily play. (Although if you don't own the rulebook, make sure to check out this quickstart guide to learn the basic rules for character creation and play.
Speaking of character creation we will be using the standard rules found in the rulebook or quickstart guide but with the following exceptions for statistics:
Roll two sets of stats, and pick either.
After picking which set you use, you may move 3 points from one skill to another. This may be done up to three times, picking different skills each time.
If you have the full rulebook, do not roll for your financial situation, this may be freely chosen through back story.
And that's it! Because I'm feeling evil tonight, you will receive absolutely NO plot hook/adventure background for now, save that it will begin with a trip to London. For now, just whip up a 1920s friendly Call of Cthulhu character and you are good to go!. I shall be choosing some number between 4 and 8, depending on the quality of submissions and how many investigators I think I can handle.
As always, questions, comments, and submissions below. Get to it!

Taking array no. 2. Just to clarify, can't switch points into or out of the same stat more than once? Assuming that, I'll provisionally go with:
Str 8
Con 6
Dex 15
Siz 13
Int 18
Pow 9
App 7
Edu 10
If you can switch out of a stat more than once, I'd end up with Siz 10 and Con 9...
This is all subject to change, but I'm quite happy with my two arrays, it's just a matter of which concept I choose (I have a couple in mind), and which permutation of which array fits my chosen concept better. I'll keep you posted!

Woot! Just as a heads up I haven't actually played CoC before, but have read the rules (albeit a year or two ago), so I may be a bit fuzzy on some details. Still.... Woot!

Wow... just, how bad can you get for array 1? :p

Never played a CoC game either, but they sound fun as hell. I am interested and I will try my hand at rolling.

Given my stats were so-so, this is an intentionally min-max'd character to emphasise his height and ugliness. I'm thinking of making him a professional garbage man. I'll try and have a full character up later.
littlehewy
Here is Remy Tesson, French composer and pianist, widower, and now occult hobbyist. Background, appearance and personality to follow.
Isabelle Fitzsimmon
I'll be resubmitting Isabella. Rolling for better stats...hopefully...
Array 1
STR 3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 1) = 9 9
CON 3d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 5) = 10 10
DEX 3d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 2) = 10 10
SIZ 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (6, 2) + 2 = 10 10
INT 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 6) + 2 = 12 12 (+2=14)?
POW 3d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 4) = 12 12 (-2=10)?
APP 3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 3) = 14 14
EDU 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 3, 3) + 3 = 14 14
Array 2
STR 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4) = 6

DEX 3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 1) = 6

APP 3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4) = 9
EDU 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 3, 2) + 3 = 11
So if I read this right, I can move up to (3) points from one stat to another in the same array? In other words I can move 2 points from my power and add to my EDU in Set one...and I can do this up to three times. Is that correct? The use of "Stats" and "Skills" in the same paragraph has me a bit confused.
As soon as I get clarification, I'll update Isabelle

It's a pretty cool image :) I've always been jealous of other's artistic talents.

Rules/stat gen question: The quickstart guide says that you can swap stats that use the same dice to roll (Dex and Str for instance), is your houserule in addition to being able to do that (what I've done), or replacing that rule? If the latter I will have to rejig some things.
Note, that before play begins, you may swap around any attributes which use the same dice to determine their value. In other words, you could swap any of the values for Strength, Constitution, Dexterity, Appearance or Power with each other. You could only swap Size and Intelligence with each other. Education remains static.
-=-=-=-
Zouron, Education is 3d6+3, so you got 12 Edu instead of 9 :)
littlehewy
Remy Tesson's profile now includes Background, Appearance, and Personality tabs. I'm working on a longer version of the background, and I'll post it up under its own tab when I get it finished - the short version has all the pertinent info, but the long version might give you more meat to work with, GM.
Also, do you need a skill breakdown?

Unfortunately the move 3 rule does replace the free swap rule, I wanted the proccess to be random enough to the point that players would have certain stats that they normally wouldn't if they were choosing them, thus (hopefully) helping them think about background and possibly how their character would roleplay.
However, if unswapping stats would be too much of a hassle due to having to reallocate skill points and such, don't worry about it.@Littlehewy: What do you mean by skill breakdown?

Doesn't really change my skills at all actually, because I've still got the 16 in Int, and 17 in EDU. Hmm, apart from Dodge. Does mean he's slower and handsomer however :p

Simon comes from a military family, so when Simon decided to attend Miskatonic to study anthropology instead of going to West Point. This caused a serious falling out with Simon's father, one that has yet to be rectified despite happening over 20 years ago.
After working hard for many years and eventually earning his PHD, Simon has been making good use of grant money to study various cultures in the Middle East during the time of Chist.
Simon's favorite hobby has turned out to be Big Game Hunting in French Africa and Simon has begun to amass a few impressive stuffed trophies mounted on his wall.

Let's see...
Remi Tesson the French pianist and small-time occultist
Harvey Andrews the construction foreman
Isabelle Fitzsimmon the spoiled debutante
David Trufant III the freelance photographer
Professor Simon Rose the Miskatonic anthropologist
Am I missing anyone's submission so far? We could almost just start the game with this party unless someone else has a character they've been hiding.

Would like to offer up Michael Andrews, ex-pat veteran of WWI and part-time employee of the American Embassy in London. That is if openings are available. Basically a former soldier who has seem more than he cares to take back home to mom and apple pie.

Working off the second array I came up with the following, taking 3 pts each from Size and Appearance, giving them to Constitution and Strength.
A former volunteer expeditionary and pre-mercenary soldier, Michael joined a variety of units throughout the war, drifting between the Allied Powers, but never having actually served in the American Armed Forces until towards the end of the conflict. He muddled around the trenches, worked on early armored vehicles, ending his services in the gunner's seat of a bi-plane, picking up a host of skills useful for war, but not for civilian life. Now he kicks around, living job to job, working whatever he can find, never feeling settled for too long. The horrors of war have left him disillusioned with life in the States, so he rarely returns there. A friend at the American Consulate gives him work time to time as a bodyguard/odds jobs man for traveling Americans.

Oooh, Cthulhu! I think I'll put my best foot forward here. I'm currently thinking about a private investigator, somewhere between Sam Spade and Sherlock Holmes. Knowing my luck with dice, though, I'll probably just get Wiggins.

7 characters! Zoinks!
I don't want to cut anyone, but at the same time this feels like it'd be a bit too bulky of a group to run through the campaign.
Hmmm. Brilliant plan! If we can get one more investigator to step forward (and no more!) I'll run two "rival" groups of investigators through the same adventure at the same time! It'll be a race for the clues, with two gangs of foolish mortals trying to solve the same mystery.
Thoughts?
