Tales from the City of Opal

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This is my homebrew world Arcaia. This particular setting is the free city of Opal, a lush equatorial city set on the edge of an immense jungle rife with undead , ancient civilizations, and dinosaurs.

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Izkrael springs foward to attack again, but catches a face-full of spores, and his strike proves futile as he launches into a coughing fit.

Everyone attacking the beast hand to hand please roll another DC 17 Fort or lose 1d3 ⇒ 1 pts Con. damage.

Egan's arrow also plants itself in the vegetative horror

After Vilya I'll update more

Elf Magus 5

Fort Save vs Pollen: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

MAgnus coughs and gags on the cloud of spores that Felicia's attack caused. He wheezes, his eyes wide with surprise.

Blurstrike:

Spoiler:
This weapon is semitransparent, almost as though it were glass, but it is obviously of sturdier make.

When activated, a blurstrike weapon partially fades from view for 1 round, appearing only as a faint outline (though you, as the wielder, can see it normally).

When you attack, an activated blurstrike weapon (along with your hand and arm) appears to others as an amorphous blur, preventing a foe from knowing exactly where the blow is aimed. After you activate this property, your opponent is considered flat-footed against the first attack you make with the blurstrike weapon in the round when you activate it. Creatures that don’t rely on sight for combat (such as those with the blindsight special quality) and creatures with uncanny dodge aren't treated as flat-footed against this attack.
The blurstrike property functions ten times per day.

Let me know if you wanted the power activated last round... I'm going forward with the creature's attacks..

After reading what Blurstrike actually does, I do not want to activate it right now.

Egan continues to rain feathered death upon the monstrosity.

I trust everyone is remembering the +1 to hit and damage that Kessel's bardic music is giving them?

Kessel continues his bard chant, more poetry then actual song though, and he pulls out his bow ready to fire should a clear shot present itself.

Female Halfling Swashbuckler 6

Felicia continues the attack

Power attack (+2 if flanking)

1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25

1d4 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11

That should just about do it ...

The flashing blades and sharp arrows the party attack the creature with finally succeed in destroying it. Two last clouds of spores blanket the group

Two more DC 17 fort saves or lose 1d3 ⇒ 2 con pts each loss. This pertains to anyone in hand-to-hand combat.

Elf Magus 5

2 Fort saves: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 101d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Oh my, that's not good! :(

As the last flurry of blows and arrows cause teh plant to collapse, Magnus joins it on the floor in a fit of coughing and wheezing,...

My Con is now 8, which means I lose 2HP per level, (-10HP) So my current HP is now 19HP

Magnus climbs unsteadily to his feet, wheezing and coughing.

"Now I know how an old human feels." He says at an attempt of his usual sarcastic wit. The wheezing and leaning against the wall sort of ruins it.

Should have bought potions of Restoration! ;P

The plant beast has fallen and the party is now in the bowels of the ship. A splintered door stands behind the stairway where the beast had been hammering away. Their light sources show a jumble of moldy sacks and boxes along the sloping hull sides

Kessel stops chanting and looks about the hold:

perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

"Let's hope that was the end of it," Kessel says, "We'll need to check on the crew we subdued, and with any luck they're no longer afflicted. One wonders however . . . I saw no signs of this thing trying to take control of our minds and yet the crew upstairs show clear signs of control of some sort. Perhaps this creature reached it's limits for mind control, or, perhaps, our work isn't yet finished."

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San coughs a bit. "Not feeling great. Anyone got anything to clear out the lungs?" he asks, looking pointedly at Citlali.

He'll also take a look around the hold.

perception 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23

Female Human

Ignoring the hacking coughs of her comrades, the completely untouched Vilya sulks in a corner.

"I could have taken it down all by myself."

Elf Magus 5

"The next one's,... <Cough cough> all yours lass!" Magnus grins weakly.

"Kessel,... I don't think that this, <Cough cough> was what we are looking for. It's green, but not very <cough> slimy. And the journal seemed very clear. We're looking for a humanoid shaped slime. I suspect this was merely another of the former <cough> owners' menagerie."

"I do however, hope I am mistaken. If THIS was only a pet, Then I graciously allow Vilya the honor of killing the slime. All by herself." He grins weakly.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

"Here, this might help a bit". Egan says, reaching in his pack, and pulling out a small bottle.

Potion of restoration, lesser

Magnus accepts the vial with a weary and grateful nod. He pops the cork, sniffs slowly as if savoring the aroma, and drinks it. He swishes it around his mouth a couple of times before swallowing.

It was 'ability Damage' and NOT 'Permanent Ability Drain' correct?
Lesser resoration of Con Dmg: 1d4 ⇒ 1

"Not a bad vintage. Bouquet is a bit weak, and the taste is a little flat. But the after buzz is quite nice!" He grins weakly, a little of the color coming back into his face.

Thanks Egan, Argh! The electronic dice gods hate me again. I needed 2 Con pts back to restore my HP lost to Con. :(

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

"And exactly why [hack, hack] did you assume you got dibs on that? Don't think your name was on it, bub! [hack, hack]" San glares at Magnus with some obvious anger.

I was actually down 3 CON ;-)

Oh? For some reason I thought I was the only one who took CON dmg?!? I was down 5 CON. (Now I'm only down 4) :P

MAgnus lifts a thin eyebrow as he peers at San. (It would be much more effective if he didn't still look like he was about to fall over.)

"Sorry. Consider yourself saved from a worse fate. It really was an inferior vintage." He leans forward and stage whispers to Sanvoros.

"I was just being polite, it tasted terrible."

He stands back up. "And I still don't feel so good. Do I look bad to you?" He asks aloud, weaving on his feet like a torch flame in a breeze.

"You both look terrible," Kessel says, "Ordinarily I'd say:

"Magnus had a foot in his grave,
and Sanvoros a deathly shade of pale,
with life and limb scarcely saved,
would either live and again to sail."

"But that would be morbid and insensitive. Perhaps I'll make such comments once this chapter is closed but don't worry, should either of you actually die I'll be sure to make it sound epic. Just try not to be killed by something that doesn't rhyme. For once I can say it is lucky that we're after a slime and not say a purple penguin."

Their talking is suddenly interrupted by a female voice coming from behind the splintered door the creature had been pounding

"Who's out there? Sound off if you ain't zombified!"

Kessel approaches the door:

"Hello?" Kessel says, "Who is this might I ask? And how did you come to be trapped bellow decks?"

"I'm Velrissa, crewmember from the Laugh. Are you the passengers?"

The group remmebers Velrissa. A slender, dark-haired woman who seemed to fit in well with the rest of the crew. She did go over in the first boat

"Hello Velrissa," Kessel says, "We are indeed the passengers, sent over to investigate after you failed to return. My name is Kessel Cobey, perhaps you could tell us what happened here, and how you got past the creature and into the room."

Bribes always welcome

Velrissa responds

"We were scouting in yonder hold when we were attacked by these slime-covered ...things. They had that big shrub beast with them. We fought back, but then my mates all turned on me! I retreated to this room and wedged the door. Then the big shrub began trying to get in! It's been pounding for an hour!"

She continues

"Make sure you check about, those slime men are out there, and my traitorous mates too. If you are safe, I'll come out."

"If that's the case then the slime men are still at large," Kessel says turning back to his companions, "Everyone stay alert."

Sense motive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24

Kessel is just going to make sure that Velrissa isn't under slime creature control, the crew topside still had some degree of intelligence to them, and this could be an overly elaborate ploy for getting the party to let their guard down. It's not likely but Kessel is a very cautious individual.

"Did you see anything else before you locked yourself in there?" Kessel asks, "Do you remember anything at all? This may be important."

Bribes always welcome

Kessel:

Spoiler:
Velrissa seems legitimately scared, and/or exhausted.

"We saw all the ruins on the top deck an' we decided to check the hold before heading back. We got to the bottom of the stairs when the slime men and the big veggie thing came out of one of those doors near the aft."

As if on cue, one of the doors on the aft wall slams open and six slime-shrouded forms come running out.

GROUP INITIATIVE!!

Elf Magus 5

MAgnus sighs,

"Of course. Anything else would be too easy. You must admire their sense of dramatic timing though. Nice entrance!"

Group roll: 1d20 ⇒ 19

Woot! MAgnus goes on 23 :)

With almost magical skill, a potion bottle appears in The battered ELf's hand, like magic. He thumbs off the top, and guzzles it. More color returns to his face, although he still looks weak compared to before.

Free action (quick draw) POtion, Standard action, Drink healing potion, Move action back up!

Potion-CMW2d8 + 3 ⇒ (1, 7) + 3 = 11

Currently at 31 and MAX HP until I get my CON back!

"Back it up! To the stairwell and doorway! Force them to come at us individually!" Magnus suits words to action and starts backing up to the stairs.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan retreats from the beasts to give himself room to fire, then waves his hands over his quiver chanting softly under his breath.

Cast Gravity Bow

Kessel acts on a 20 INT and casts grease in front of the slimes hoping to disrupt their charge:

Reflex DC 14

Female Halfling Swashbuckler 6

Felicia looks ready to charge but in the end follows Magnus's advice.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San goes on a 25

San steps back away from the slimes, a little gun-shy after the spore attack from the plant thing. He unleashes a scorching ray on the closest slime, hoping it doesn't share the plant's resistances.

Velrissa: [stairs]

Iz: 23 [atk-hit]
Felicia:23 [stairs/action held?]
Egan: 23 [gravity bow]
Magnus: 23 [potion/stairs]
Vilya 22 [pending]
Kessel: 20[Grease]
Citali: 20 [pending]
Slime zombies: 6 [attacking]

The figures dont moan like a traditional zombie would. These ones train bright yellow orbs at the party and shuffle out silently, their jellified forms trailing snotty green mucus.

Their rescued crewmember Velrissa, seeing the swarm approaching heads up the stairs calling

"Don't let them touch you!"

San's fiery bolt hits the first one coming out of the narrow hall, filling the hold with the stink of burning swamp. Iz readies as Magnus and Felicia head for the stairs. Egan clenches his fist and speaks a quiet word. A thrum of power ignites about him briefly. Kessel also speaks a word and smears a line of grease on his hand. The floor in front of the six green-engulfed forms turns shiny-slick

DM dice:

Spoiler:
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

The first one hit by San's ray comes stumbling across the slicked area towards Iz. He cleaves it, but it stays on its feet, it's mouth mindlessly opening and closing quietly. It lurches at Iz in a rough bodyslam

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 221d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

The creature's arms and torso slam into Iz. Close up he can see a skeleton witha few shreds of meat buried deep within the slimy skin of the zombie. Tendrils of slime lash across him

DC 14 Fort save please

The next two zombies slide across the slick floor and fall with a horrid squelchy sound.
The fourth zombie comes out, manages to traverse the slick, but doesn't reach the party. The two final ones fall as well.

Four down prone, two up! I'm centering the grease C/D 10-11. Will update map soonish. Just need Vilya's and Citali's actions
