>Nick would hunt down and kill pretty much anyone he finds using Magic publicly. Presumably everyone is the same.
A: Yes he would and others have and do.
>Okay: is it okay to do Magic in front of other members of our little society without a problem?
A: That is your call, what is the risk, will they blab, do you trust them with your secrets?
>Is there a way to cast a spell that is coincidental without the flashy effects from the book.
In theory if Nick casts Scrying (a high level spell) anyone seeing gets a special effects light show. Is there a way (Feat or something) to make it "he stares into a crystal ball and claims to see what's happening"?
Not looking for invisible fireballs, where making fire is the whole damn point (though that would be cool) so much as being able to cast discrete spells in public.
True Strike is only coincidental when your eyes don't glow blue, basically.
A: Yes there is a way with this Campaign feat
By Will Alone (Su):
The wise can cast a spells without fulfilling any of its somatic, verbal, or material components by making a concentration check as a free action before casting. The 1st time this feat is taken they can cast, 3+ there principle magic stat mod. But spells with expensive foci or material components as materials over 50gp still need them. The wise may select this feat more than once. Each time it is selected, the wise may cast 2 more spells by will alone per day.
Cast spells as [Su] Mod+3 per day.

Currently Nick's spell themese are:
"What would a horror movie villian do". So spells designed to scare and look terrifying. Not a good match.
If they are seen ONLY in the minds of others that is fine.
Limiting the targets is a good idea. On guys screaming in the park pointing at a horror others cant see is fine.| Nick Tailor |
That's an awesome feat I would take it anyway...
Honesty compels me to say it's different though.
The CRB, in addition to Somantic, Verbal, Focus and Material Component spells also states/implies all spells (and spell like abilities) have an effect.
Crazy, huh.
Still, Silent, Eschewed spell? You just stand there and squint at someone? They still know you've cast on them. Usually Piazo artwork depcits it by someone's hand glowing. Both in the case of the Mystic Theurge (so you know they're casting two spells at the same time)
I think it was a balance thing in a fantasy world.
That's the thing I'm looking to hide.
Edit: Hmmm - or is that something you don't have?
Edit 2: So far Nick has
(A) been that creepy shadow form
(B) used Shrink item
(C) thought about the fact he hid in a mirror
(D) created the wave
(E) detected magic
I think that's it. Anyone remember anything else?
Sariel Patrick Cornelius
@Nick, I don't remember anything that you pointed out, sounds really cool though :) Did you say a crystal ball, that would be cool, talk about instant surveillance, Knowledge is power right?
Before Sariel leaves the Lloyds building he places two orders on-line. Using His new alias he has the items shipped COD to the post office box he keeps in Gary Indiana. The first items were two tranquilizer guns and their misc. items, darts bags, rounds, etc for Appx. $2,000 for John. The second item, for Titus; a stick for $50.
When Sariel leaves out of London later that day he flies into Detroit and then takes a bus to Gary Indiana, which is where he has his most southern stash. He removes all the items from the locker, changing cloths and placing one firearm in the magic bag in his pocket, the other he leaves in the bottom of his largest bag. He picks up the items at the post office and returns to the bus station. He purchases a bus ticket to New York by way of Cleveland.
Once in New York He calls John and asks him to set up a meeting.
Sariel Patrick Cornelius
Ok, Sariel left the beretta more to have room in the bag.
I just realized the difficulty in walking around with 100,000 in Euro.
So before Sariel leaves he inquires the name of the bank we did the job for and deposits the money there and acquires a debit card and credit card based on the money.
Sariel Patrick Cornelius
I say everyone we kill we put a sign on them that says "this ones for you" and throw the body in the atlantic, they'll get the message eventually :)

@DM do you mind if Sariel buys John Rubber Bullets I feel like they fit better.
@Sariel, I'll reply in gameplay.
Sariel Patrick Cornelius
cool, I did not even know those were there, consider the switch switched, I will wait for Nick to settle In and then post, since Sariel is traveling by land....
Sariel Patrick Cornelius
I see, I have that info downloaded in word documents from the web sight, didn't even think to look at it for "rubber bullets" good call.
Nick Tailor
Thinking I'm overthinking this.
GM Pandorica: in your world, if someone casts a spell, and there are no components (so no V, S, M, F or DF - eg a spell like ability) and if the effect is internal/invisible (like detect magic), can you see that they have cast a spell?
GM Pandorica
no worry all is cool, I am going to let you guys meet up and do want you want to do. This is going to be a long stake out for the 1st few mouths so you will have time to do stuff. Things will get interesting around mid May 2007. It will be during this time you will be levelling so if you want to write up how you learn new stuff or get classes in NYC that I think will add to you PC.
Nick Tailor
I'm hoping to pick up Scrying - going through everything now in the rebuild.
If he *does* have it, it makes sense to use it, but one of the things I'm questioning is whether to have 4th level spells... So am sort of holding off. Hopeful to have something to present today or tomorrow.
Also, I have a theme with Nick, not sure whether it fits.
Was using Mirror Hideaway/Mirror Sight/(eventually) Mirror Transport. The dark figure as a shadow/reflection. Also looking at a Mirror flavoured summon.
"Have you ever looked into a mirror, and felt like something else was looking back? Walked into a dark room and thought that your reflection was moving when you weren't? The modern world says it's an optical illusion, but it isn't. Mirrors are gates waiting to happen, to a dark realm of their own."
...
"Through the Looking Glass, indeed".
---
I like the idea that it's a secret people find out when they know enough, and then never trust mirrors again. Looks like a weird phobia until you know.
This sort of changes the game world though (even if just for a few knowledgeable wizards) and is the opposite of subtle.
Is it something you like? I can throw it, if you don't.

ok, I'm a little confused now, the things you want us "to write up how you learn new stuff", are you talking about how we learned stuff for level eight, or are you talking about surveillance stuff for learning about the Nazi in the neighborhood.
On a separate note, I though "league of Extraordinary Gentleman" would be the go to movie for ideas. It turns out "sneakers" and "Ronin" (the Robert De niro version) actually help more :)
Sariel Patrick Cornelius
ok gentlemen points of interest the house is out in the sticks, you can tell that by the map the property is in Manorville but is actually nearer to Calverton
Because the house is too far from the city Sariel will not be "homeless" instead he will buy a conversion van or a delivery van and live out of it. To begin surveillance, If it can be done without being seen or video recorded, Sariel will steal their trash on trash day and see where they spend their money, either looking at receipts or the trash itself.
Possibly getting a delivery job at their favorite pizza place to get a closer look at the house and the crew. Just some ideas. He would also be looking for any electronic devices, security signs, satellite dishes, sense undead, animals anything that will give him information but not put him in jeopardy.
Sariel Patrick Cornelius
Are we going to roleplay the meeting?
How much of the next couple of months are we roleplaying? How much are we narrating?
GM Pandorica
Wife Bday, I may add something over the next 2 days guys
RP is good as your going to work things out
Sariel the Trash is a no go, not unless you go to the city dump or pay off the trash men.
A guy with a dog oversees its taking out and pick up.
Its hard to get close to the house, with out being seen, Camiras + 3 guys + dog at all times.
Nick Tailor
Okay,
95% of the way there (I hope)
My plan is to drop Craft Arms & Armour and Craft Construct. Possibly Craft Wondrous as well (torn on that, waiting on answer from above). Looking to pick up By Will Alone, or equivalent metamagics.
Spell wise, I've thrown out some of the really problematic spells.
I've tried to set it up so that I have mostly got subtle spells: protections, preparations, non detections, that sort of thing. Also picked up Greater Magic Weapon, which means that he can enchant about 50 bullets at the start of the day. If we all use the same rounds (which means we're looking for something a wizard like Nick can use) then there's a way to kill DR/magic critters. Going to have to prep for it, though.
I remembered what GM Pandorica said about wanting to be able to use magic, so I've pushed a crazy Evocation focus. I figure the water wall sounded most like Resilient Sphere of all the spells I could get. Nick can do an amazing damn-near-nuke-proof resilient sphere... but it is crazy vulgar. He has a great fireball (looking to go up to about 14d6) which is pretty much never going to be usable.
I was seriously tempted by a spontaneous caster, but I really like the idea that spellbooks are a sort of 'stolen magic' people were not meant to have. Also, Nick just doesn't seem to fit a Sorceror. GM Pandorica: I think a lot of your worries about spellbooks came down to either (A) thematically they make magic easier (B) you've got the problem of a PC easily gaining spells (C) it encourages mages to work together by sharing spells.
(A) it does, this is something I like. If you are prepared to wave (0gp) M component of Secret Page, Nick's going to spam it. I reckon every wizard would. At that point getting a spell out of a spellbook is pretty much a case of password guessing. (B) There's a heap of ways of increasing spell repertoire. None of it makes up for the limited number of spells that can be memorised a day (especially if he's losing slots to nondetection, greater magic weapon and the like). How important is this to you? In all honesty about 10% of the spells make up about 90% of the power Nick has. (C) Nick hates wizards. I picked up Blood Transcription. I suggest it (along with Secret Page) be very common wizard spells. That means that the easy way for a wizard to get a new spell is to kill another wizard and get the answer from his blood. If you're prepared to make wizards paranoid and slightly crazy it would make things easier.
If these are a problem, then we'll need to go back to the drawing board again.
I've put the spells I'm looking at below in a spoiler, just so this isn't too much of a wall of text. Scrying is one of them. GM Pandorica, are there spells here you are worried about?

are nick and Titus meeting us at the park? Or are we driving out to the house?
Sariel Patrick Cornelius
yes, we are at the park right, or are you talking about Sariel asking if you had been to the house or seen Titus? He didn't know if you went there first or what, I didn't mean to be confusing, it was intended to be small talk and to give you a hook if you wanted to narrate what you had been up to a little...
Titus had posted that he went to the house, and GM Pandorica has said that the will move things along once we get to the house so I assume we are headed there from here. Or soon after...
Sariel Patrick Cornelius
Welcome back, I hope you enjoyed the game, I slept through most of it, worked the night before and didn't have a dog in the fight, so to speak.
seems like three choices:
A. dinner and a movie, but none of you guys are Sariel's type.
B. Johns house, if we do that Sariel will give him the gun and rubber bullets he brought for him.
C. Or my personal favorite, go to the house so GM Pandorica can "move things along"
Sariel Patrick Cornelius
Titus has moved in the Lloyds "safe house" right, were talking about going there or to Johns, not the "Nazi Mobsters" house right?
Sariel Patrick Cornelius
Just out of curiosity, what are the odds we could crash the party? Anyone got a sure proof way it would work?
Titus "The Titan" Armstrong
I could call my agent. See if maybe there are any famous MMA fighters there and try and call in a favor to get invited. Problem is the guy saw min in Italy so why I may get in, I'm sure it he would expect something.
Nick Tailor
Sorry missed could you recap here Nick. What research?
bottom of this page, under the spoiler "What Nick Does"Was a bit of a wall of text no-one was likely to know IC, so I hid it.
Sariel Patrick Cornelius
we all came here in Titus' truck, is there another vehicle at the house? Two or three of us could follow different drunks and then call each other to figure out which one to do, that would give Nick more time to prepare.
Titus "The Titan" Armstrong
This is not the best Vehicle to follow someone in. They may notice :)
