A night of revelry at the Formidably Maid sees four unlucky patrons become the latest additions to the crew of the Wormwood. Will the newcomers thrive in their new positions or become food for the sharks?

Jehova here, presenting Tiberius Locke, an extremely perceptive half-elf sailor who grew up in Ilizmagorti. He's had a knack for weather his whole life.

Crunch is about done, we don't get any items, correct?

Backstory is in progress, but I wanted to get him up here as soon as possible.

Per the S&SPG, our property is confiscated after we are Shanghaied at the tavern in Port Peril. Depending on your campaign trait or skill ranks (Come on, Sleight of Hand, don't fail me!) you may be able to sneak something through. So we start with nothing, but that doesn't mean we don't have equipment somewhere.

Gotcha. I'll go ahead and figure out what I would have spent that 70gp on.

DM, is it worth it to take the EWP (Firearms) feat, or are the odds of stumbling across a gun anytime soon slim to none for a non-gunslinger character?

EDIT: To be clear, I read what you wrote about gunslinger/gun wielding characters being able to find guns, I just wanted to be sure this still applies to those with only proficiency, not class features.

Presumably, the AP provides for a way to get your confiscated gear back, or it'd have "But don't bother rolling for starting cash or buying gear" in big letters somewhere in the S&S players' guide.

(Also, 40+ posts overnight. Wow. )

in less than a day the competition is already quite fierce.

The only problem I have with getting shanghai-ed is the potential loss of my spellbook. Even without a spellbook - I will not give up until my wizard is a legit pirate on the high seas somehwere!

Just look at his spell list - IMHO a wooden ship is the ultimate playground for a wood elementalist.

I'd like to submit Amerdan Stormspeaker for consideration, an aloof storm druid from Drenchport. I'm also very open to playing him as a sea witch if that's preferred.

The stat block and backstory are in the profile, and I can post more than once per day if needed, no problem.

B-b-but, I already posted a storm druid ;_________;

life oracle is ready. stats and story are in the profile. I can easily post once a day.

Name: Leandr "The Cook" Southgale
Roll on ship: Cook, Harpoonist, Assault. In that order.

Basics:
Stats: STR 10; DEX 16; CON 14; INT 9; WIS 12; CHA 16
Race: Gnome
Class: Rogue (Pirate archetype of course!)
Alignment: CG
Traits: Ilizmagorti Native, Shackles Seafarer

Description:
As you lie under a bench in the Formidably Maid, you try not to get noticed as hard as you can. A group of customers appears to be shanghaied, most of them too far gone to notice it themselves. The gnome that you've been talking to most of the night, she called herself The Cook, tries to stumble out of the tavern, oblivious to what's happening behind her back. She looked quite pretty to you and she even bought you a few drinks, a rare thing in your experience. With her curly brown hair, smooth smile and big blue eyes she looked at you with great interest as you told her about your last trip in search for a treasure. Through a half-open shutter you see a few men outside, probably part of the operation.

Backstory/peronality:
Born in the dangerous city of Ilizmagorti, Leandr always wanted to join her friends who got to go on raiding trips. Her father wouldn't have it so she worked in a tavern as a cook, not a good one but most of the customers never cared. When her father disappeared Leandr was quick to abandon her job and join the first ship to leave Ilizmagorti. Why did she leave? To find her father. And perhaps it was just because she had always wanted to leave and never could. It didn't matter, both reasons were good enough.

She's been at sea for a few years now, usually hired as a cook but recently learning how to handle herself in a fight. It started with her snatching the harpoon from a sailer who failed to catch dinner. Angered by his slowness, Leandr made a good impression by hitting the dolphin who was practicly taunting them, at the very first try.

Leandr was getting good at her job at sea, she loved ships, the galley not so much but at least working there got her on ships and it gave her a place of her own, usually something that only the captain could claim. While still being handed the harpoon when a fight is imminent, Leandr prefers to use her kitchen knives or even the cleaver.

As a young halfling in the Shakles, his father is a dred pirate, well that's what his mother told him, though she couldn't quite remember his name. She said that his father could beat all the 'uncles' that came to stay and bought her drinks, where she worked in the Inn, 'The Bald Parrot' When he was first old enough, he went with his 'uncles', who taught him a thing or two about being a sailor, not to mention some things he'd best not repeat for his mother. As the eldest of the brood of children, 7 in all, it was up to him to look after them.
It was several years ago that his mother, Ginra fell into the harbour coming home from a heavy nights drinking with one of his 'uncles'. At least that's what uncle Captain Cranchr told the authorities and the children. It was then the children were given to the temple of Besmara and cared for, well some of the time, the rest they were given to various sea captains to use as cabin boys and girls. It is strange, but Cleric Frodthak, saw in Cecic a gift, he said given by the Lord of all Pirates, and so taught him the faith of Besmara. He has developed that ever since, its been invaluable when he's been a cabin boy for a sick captain.

Tonight though, he drinks, he's been 3 months at sea and now its time to forget the rigors and hardships and enjoy what the land has to offer, in the nearest Inn. After a few drinks, he returns to take the evening air, looking over the ship.

Advancement: take selective channeling at 3rd, take a couple of levels of either bard or rogue.

There is at least one place on the Wormwood where you can possibly stumble across a firearm, but it'll take a bit of cleverness or a very silver tongue to get a hold of it. Having access to your weapons isn't too important right off the bat. As long as someone has EWP (firearms), the possibility is there.

Besides with the SU ability you should not be totally helpless. The loss of gear should enhance the creativity and roleplaying. Heck, Jasmine Rose welcomes some catcalls and unwanted advancements. It will be shocking good fun.

I must have been convinced that we were another day but character selection will be finalized by Friday, May 18th, not Sunday.

OK, I'll throw my hat in the ring. Randall McNally, Human Bard (Sea Singer) Began his career at the tender age of 13 as a cabin boy and worked/charmed his way up through the ranks to Bosun on his last ship until an "incident" with that ship owners daughter caused him to be cashiered and he finds himself in the Formidably Maid drowning his sorrows.

Everything is up in the profile now, let me know if you need anything else / anything looks off, GM.

Here's my submission. Maybe S&S is in my future this time! :-)

Name and Role:
Korgoth Belvek, Half-Orc Fighter (Corsair; from Pirates of the Inner Sea)

Traits: Peg Leg (campaign), Killer

Character description, alignment, backstory and personality:

Alignment: CN

Description: Korgoth is a hulking half-orc, his skin a dark green from many years in the broiling sun of the Shackles. He has two prominent tusks that protrude up from his bottom teeth. Numerous scars criss cross his body from a long life of piracy. The most notable feature about him though is his missing leg, replaced with a stump of wood that makes a hollow thump as he walks. Despite this, his gate is steady and assured, no awkwardness to his movement.

Backstory: Korgoth is a Shackles pirate to his core. Born in Port Peril, he was weaned on tales of the first great Free Captains, who carved their way into history on seas of blood and plunder. He set out on the first ship that would have him and he never looked back.

During one of his first voyages he learned that both the sea and a ship could be unforgiving mistresses. One of the other sailors took an instant disliking to Korgoth's orc-ish lineage and wasted no time in explaining it to him in vivid and insulting detail. Being young and foolish, Korgoth wasted no time in handing the man a beating. It became a savage affair and Korgoth ended up killing the man with his hare hands. Rather than feeling remorse or pity, he simply felt gratified that he had shut the loud mouth up in a most satisfying way. Spilling blood proved to be an easy task but in this case it was too easy as Korgoth hadn't known that the man he killed was incidently the captain's brother.

Pitched over the side, Korgoth wasted no time in swimming for the nearest island he could remember seeing. Still he knew his fate was pretty much sealed. Whispering a last prayer to Besmara, he swam feebly onward. At the first tug, Korgoth almost didn't notice, so tired was he from his time adrift. The second and following tugs though were no mystery as the shark's teeth dug into his leg. With a renewed energy born of fear and desperation, he lashed out as much as he could, hurting the beast enough to drive it off. But he could already see other fins quickly approaching.

Yet apparently Besmara decided he had paid an adequate price for her aid for as the other sharks approached so too did a distant vessel, apparently drawn to his splashing defense and the slick of blood that was now spreading through the sea. Hauling him aboard, he barely maintained his vision before the ship's surgeon began sawing the rest of his nub off.

Since then Korgoth has walked with a wooden beam in place of his leg, although after such an amount of time it has almost become one with him. Far from slowing him down, it has added even more to his fearsome appearance and men who've sailed with him know that he is not one to be trifled with. He walked away from one of the single greatest threats a pirate can know and rather than confining him to land, it only further drove him to pursue a life of plunder and blood.

Personality: Korgoth is a quietly violent man. Loyal to those who earn it, he has no fear of standing up to those that oppose him. He has dreams of one day captaining his own ship but he knows that it is best to have a crew you trust and so attempts to build relations with those around him that prove of a similar mindset.

Tanner Nielsen, I went with Elf insted of Tiefling - it pays to not eliminated myself right off the bat!

BACKGROUND:

Before Aroden's death - when Chelaxian rule was both glorious and benevolent - the Elven ambassador to Chelax was offered a tour of Chelax's crown jewel territory, Sargava. As a minor official as part of the Embassy, Parthalas E'ilamia and his pregnany wife, Ylinna were bound to accompany their lord the Ambassador. Berthed on another ship accompanying the Ambassador, they became separated from the rest of the flotilla during a squall off the Garundian coast. The following day the weather died down enough for the crew to try and rejoin their comrades, when they were set upon and captured by pirates - with all male prisoners killed, including Parthalas.

The pregnant Ylinna was spared the worst treatment her co-prisoners endured in the hope she could be ransomed. As the months passed, no word of a ransom agreement came, and she at last gave birth to a son. Naming the child after her late husband, the infant child was taken from her as parole for her continued good behavior so long as there was hope she and the baby could be redeemed.

It was as a boy that tragedy struck: Aroden failed to appear in Chelax, a humongous storm formed out to sea, and a massive tsunami destroyed the coast - including the camp the pirates and their chattel lived in while not at sea. The young Parthalas was gone at the time, held prisoner aboard a roving pirate ship preying on the Inner Sea merchants for a change. When the ship attempted to return home, to find it gone, Parthalas was devastated - and left with only pirates to raise him.

Years passed, and the young elven boy - addressed only as "Thalas" by the inveterately lazy pirates, slowly grew to near-manhood amongst the scum of humankind. Not strong enough to defend himself, Thalas' "prisoner" status continued. As a cabin boy and assistant to Captain "Steel-plate" Jim (on account of a steel plate screwed to his skull), Thalas learned all about sailing, navigation, and what it took to run a ship. The pirates' way of life, and their frequent callings-out to Besmara, was all the boy knew.

Thalas' chance to escape realized itself on yet another of "Steel-plate" Jim's excursions to the Inner Sea. While anchored off a small town, and most of the crew drunk or passed out, Thalas made use of the opportunity. Stabbing the grossly inebriated "Steel-plate" through the eye up to the hilt of his own dagger - and again through the other eye to be sure he was dead - Thalas pocketed a few of the more valuable trinkets in the Captain's cabin and quietly fled the ship with none of the crew any wiser to what had just happened.

Making the long, slow way to Kyonin, Thalas hoped to finally rejoin his never-known family and be amongst his own kind. Reality, however, was a different matter entirely. Aghast at such an un-educated, ill-mannered brute of an child-elf who could barely even speak the Elven language, the E'ilamia family chose to foreswear the boy his name and have him expelled from the kingdom entirely. Enraged beyond measure at the betrayal of everything he, his mother, and his father had suffered and died for, Thalas swore vengeance and set about it the only way he knew: raiding and plundering - and doing so in Besmara's name.

In the decades since, Thalas has worked all over the coasts and trade routes of Avistan and Garund. With the "settling" of Port Peril, Thalas found a new home of sorts amongst the pirates and sailors of the Shackles. Hoping to join a crew himself where his sailing experience and Besmara-granted abilities could earn him the respect his Elvish heritage could not, Thalas headed to the Formidably Maid to seek enlistment.

@Jonasty1031 - Korgoth the Fighter? You wouldn't happen to be related to Korgoth the Barbarian, would you? :)

@Macharius - Well, the DM noted that one non-standard racial character would be allowed. Since there is only one other submission with a non-standard race (and I emphasized that I'm willing to switch if need be) I'm all right with the character.

It would seem so. He posted this in the initial recruitment guidelines:

I took this to mean anything not in the PHB.

I guess the point is moot, because I ended up liking this particular character concept more, anyways!

Alright, ladies and gentlemen!

I know I said that submissions would be accepted until the 16th but I'm sitting at 22 as I type this out so I'm going to close submissions on Tuesday, May 15th, 12:01 (EDT). That's 5 hours and 23 minutes from now for those of you in different time zones who don't want to look that up.

I've got some pretty good ones and it's already going to be tough to decide. There will be two groups picked out, the first to play and the others will be contacted if any of the original crew doesn't show themselves within a reasonable amount of time, anyone drops out or other circumstances of the sort.

Keep 'em coming!

well I was thinking of submitting a character, but you have enough on your hands already hehe. Really amazing how many submission people get on these boards that fast! Anyway good luck all :)

Oh gosh, I didn't notice that Tiberius Locke was also a storm druid...! Apologies, I totally didn't mean to step on any toes. As I said before, I can play Amerdan as a sea witch with the appropriate spells choices, familiar, and patron to accommodate weather manipulation, support healing, debuffs, and some arcane blasting as needed.

To the GM: Consider Amerdan Stormspeaker to be potentially in the arcane caster category if that makes your job any easier. :)

VERY earliest, tomorrow. It's my day off so I have time to just chill and really debate with myself who I want to see in game. Latest will be Friday. The group I'm playing with right now for Carrion Crown is going to show up within the hour so I won't have much time to really make a decision until game time is over. :D

It doesn't help that there's also been 3 (that I know of) other S&S PbP recruitment going on in the last few weeks. That leaves me with a good amount of characters to sift through.

It looks like S&S is shaping up to be a long-term favorite for the pbp crowd. The recruitment drives thus far remind me of Kingmaker. After a few weeks, anytime someone posted a recruitment thread for Kingmaker you would get two dozen fully-fleshed characters posted within half an hour.

I don't blame them. Not only is it pirates, but Mr. Pett did a great job introducing the Sweet Trade and life at sea to the uninitiated.

The quality of "Pirates of the Inner Sea" and "Isles of the Shackles" doesn't hurt a bit. And I will admit that the recurring joke of "Most pirates don't appreciate Chelish Opera" followed by the revelation of one island where they very much appreciate Chelish opera (Or Else) amused and partially inspired this character's background.

Just thought I would try my hand at this AP....

Presenting Kiernan D'Agostin, Corsair (former Gladiator)

I have been reworking a tiefling rogue after I didn't make it into the tiefling S&S game.

Character name: Iuni Seastrider
Race: Tiefling (base tiefling with no modifications)
Class: Rogue (default rogue class)
Iuni was an orphan on the streets of Port Peril who was taken in by a local band of thieves calling themselves "The Family" that pays the bills by hijacking ships docked at the port.

I'll be finishing up the character sheet on my profile tomorrow.

<- What I have so far. I'll post with her again when she's finished.

Yes I will admit I'm more than excited to get a chance at this ap. I have been stalking this thread and the competition is quite stiff.

A little over an hour left before closing time.

If nobody else throws their names into the hat, I have a very good idea who I'm going to be asking to join up on this AP so I'll have it posted much sooner than Friday, like in over an hour, bar some last minute submissions!

*Bounces hopefully*

I have a final list ready for 12:01 am. If anyone has a submission, you have four minutes left. ;)

A half-elf does not gain proficiency with any weapon due to racial abilities. They do, however, have an alternate racial ability called "Ancestral Arms." Half-elves with this racial trait receive Exotic Weapon Proficiency or Martial Weapon Proficiency with one weapon as a bonus Feat at 1st level. It replaces Adaptability.

Tiberius Locke (CN male half-elf druid)

I spent hours deliberating the pros and cons of each character and I'm hoping what I came up with will make things interesting. Especially with the main party (E and G in the same group!), however you're all being pressed ganged and you can't choose your mates---you just have to work with them! I know the submission window was short but I also know that more than a few people have been itching to play S&S for some time now.

Victims, please post in the Discussion Thread when you see this to let me know that you're still available and interested!

If anyone has to drop out, or doesn't post in the discussion thread by tomorrow @ midnight (EDT), I'll be harassing the alt. to take the spot. I'm sure you're all clever enough to figure out who'se going to be replacing whom.

To everyone else, keep an eye out for this thread; if there are any openings after the alt's have been used (hopefully this doesn't happen) you guys will be my first choice should another recruitment be needed.

Thanks everyone for submitting your characters. I love reading all the different ideas that people have and it didn't make choosing easy.

Thanks for the invite!

Edit: Aaaaaaand I see Seijiro has already posted in the Discussion board. Let me know if you need me in the future.
