"So there are more like you? But they can't make more now," says Chloé.

"Now the question is, what do we do next, Schmitty? We can't have you going back to Ixion or the giants or whomever and telling them everything that's happened here. But we also can't just tie you up and throw you in a garage."

Schmitty stops and thinks for a second. It becomes readily apparent to you, Chloe, that this is probably the deepest thinking he has done in a long, long time.

"We...we haven't seen Ixion since we were made. I don't think he cares. It's...hell, it's sort of funny, isn't it? I grew up Catholic, and so much messed up garbage happened in my life...the things that happened to me, the things I did...I was pretty sure God just didn't care. Then I meet god, and he makes me even more of a monster than I already am...pretty much for the hell of it. And then it turns out I'm right...he doesn't care.

I don't know. I feel this overwhelming...loneliness. All of the others do, too. We've tried to make more, but we can't, and...I don't know. I don't know what to do."

It's hard to tell, with a raspy voice coming from a throat that seems more tail-pipe than windpipe, but you think you're detecting...sadness? Epic ennui? You're not precisely sure, but this horrifying Titanspawn now seems pitiable.

"And after all the terrible things that the world did to you, well, it seems only fitting that you are one of the terrible things, right? It feels like everything that happened just underscores that you are a monster. So you felt that if you're a monster, you might as well really be a monster," says Chloé sympathetically.

"Some of us got amazing powers and great heritages... and you got to be left out in the cold. It's not fair and it's not right."

Impulsively, she hugs Schmitty.

"Just because someone did bad things to you and made you bad doesn't mean you have to be bad. I can't promise we can make everything all right, and we have a lot of work to fix things, but we can at least try to make things better."

Chloe, the Horseman is pretty obviously stupefied. It obviously expected to be cut into pieces, so a hug was about the last thing it expected.

"But...how? What am I supposed to do?"

INACTIVE - GAME DIED

"Let me give that some thought," says Chloé to the horseman. She peels back for a moment to find Erika.

"So, Erika, this is really in your court now," she opens. "Jurisprudence, that is. I feel like the horseman wound up on the wrong side, but that doesn't excuse his bad acts. This isn't the sort of thing where we can just lock him up in a jail, though. And... if uh, some kind of badness is really coming, we could use all the supernatural allies we can get... but I'm not sure if that's a good idea, or even the best way to go about this. What do you think?"

Erika looks up from her screen as Chloe approaches. She frowns at the other woman's words, not because she dislikes the request, but because... well, this is a very difficult topic.

"I am not a judge, Chloe. I just make sure that the bad people are punished. But is our justice system the best it could be? I don't know. And I don't know enough about... about Schmitty and what he's done to even start making a decision."

She closes her laptop and slides it in its sleeve, then turns to look at the motocentaur surrounded by the others. Squaring her shoulders, she strides over, stopping in front of Schmitty and seeking his gaze.

"Schmitty, you have done some bad things."

Using the Judgment boon to try and determine if he is guilty or not.

Sorry guys, I thought I responded and was waiting on you...forum ate my post!

This creature is guilty of a great many things. It is a Titanspawn; it has kidnapped, it has killed, and it has committed evil. For all that, you sense a desperate loneliness within him, a void that aches to be filled.

Scion of Frigg- Legend 3 - 9/9 LP - 7/7 WP - Health: -0, -0, -0, -1, -1, -3, Incapacitated - Purviews: Prophecy 2, Magic 2 - Join Battle: 6 - Dodge DV: 3 - Parry DV: 2 - Glock: Speed 4, Accuracy +1, Damage +3L, Range 20

Chloe was right, this wasn't a case that you could bring before the court. But what were they to do with the motocentaur? Kill him? Imprison him? They certainly couldn't let him roam free after what he had done.

The nature of justice is something that Erika has spent a great deal of time thinking about. When someone breaks the law, we have to also examine the nature of the law, and the nature of the circumstances that led that person to break it. We also have to consider the degree of harm that they have inflicted upon others by doing so. Should we also judge intent when we weigh a transgression?

Yet, good and evil can exist independently of any laws. And the nature of punishment is another complex topic. Many legal systems intend punishment as a mix of deterrent and as means of offering the victims some satisfaction. Yet, she had been reading a lot about the incarceration systems in nordic countries like Sweden and Norway, where the focus is on rehabilitation, and not punishment. Somehow, that seems fitting here.

"You cannot undo the pain and loss that you have caused. But perhaps you can atone for it, by changing your heart and your ways. We fight a desperate fight to save the world; nothing less. Now is your chance to be on the right side of history, on the right side of humanity."

Schmitty looks back and forth from Chloe to Erika.
"So...I guess I have a choice..."

He looks down, seeming to think, and those close to him (and Ulf) hear him mutter;
"That's more than that bastard Ixion ever gave us..."

He looks up to you, and clearly some decision has been made.
"What do you want me to do?"

"Help us." Erika responds, simply. "We need to recover the Heart of Winter. Come with us and help us do that."

Chloé nods in agreement. "You might as well - Ixion didn't work out for you; you have nothing to lose now."

He seems to struggle with the idea of it for a moment, then reaches into his leather vest and pulls out his phone. He exchanges contact information with you.
"I suppose that's as good an option as any; if I'm lucky maybe some of my sins can be wiped away through this."

You see a change come over him, bits of hope peeking through what had been a roughshod, resigned demeanor. Assuming you let Schmitty go, he takes his leave of you; his reasoning is that the Dwarves won't take kindly to his presence there.

Erika, you feel somehow connected to Schmitty now, almost as if the bonds of Fate are now tying you together...

You have gained a Fatebinding to Schmitty at Strength 4.

As he leaves, Ola asks you all to come back inside once more; apparently, while you were having this tete a tete with Schmitty, the Dwarves were conferring, figuring out what to do, and they have made their decision, but wish to hear from you once more.

As you return to the downstairs area, the Dwarves have traded their coffee for bottled beer. You are offered some, if you wish. Lodi is seated in his easy chair, then stands as you enter the room, speaking almost ceremonially.

"Well, now. As is always the case with the Aesir, you are in the thick of it now. Tell me, what are your plans?"

One person may relate your current course of action; the person who does, please roll Charisma+Presence

"Our job is clear: We need to track down this Fornjot Power Associates and put an end to their plans! The presence of giants and creatures in the world is a clear sign that wickedness is afoot. Like true sons and daughters of the Aesir and Vanir we must rise to our calling. We can't let the Heart of Winter fall into the hands of creatures who would try to bring about the end of the world, and we'll fight to find them and stop them!"

Speechifying seems to be Chloé's strong point, though she is an actress. She raises her sword in the air as she finishes her speech, then brings it down in an arc to punctuate her sentence.

She turns, red hair swinging with the motion, to Chase. "We need to find out where Fornjot Power Associates has operations near here. They must've made some arrangements to get that giant into Bodie."

Then she faces Dustin and Ulfr. "And we need to be ready to fight giants. Think you're up to the task of whipping a rag-tag band of newly-pledged heroes into shape?"

At last she turns her head to Erika. "And of course we need to think about how we're going to wage this war. Because it's a war against the giants and the plans of whoever set this in motion, and that means we have to marshal forces to our side and prepare for alliances and compacts."

Charisma + Presence: 8d10 ⇒ (7, 8, 9, 10, 7, 4, 10, 8) = 63 -> 7 successes + 2 auto

Chloe, some of the Dwarves, who have been stoic so far, actually stand up and cheer. You hear muttered comments about "proper Aesir fire", and Lodi grins broadly at you.

"It is decided! We will throw our lot in with you, then, young Scions. You can count the Dwarves of Bixby Knoll as your allies.

First off, you should stay and get some rest, if nothing else. You’ll need it so you can be ready for your trip...this organization you're after is not exactly local. Second, we can tell you a little about Fornjót Power Associates, if you haven’t looked it up online yourselves. We’ll do some digging and we should have information for you first thing tomorrow night. That should save you a little time. T

Third, we can offer you some weapons we stashed away. Dwarf-make. Maybe not as good as your divine armaments, but quality nonetheless.

Fourth, Ola has convinced us of the importance of your cause, so we have something else to help you out a bit."

At this, you notice the mirth leave the faces of a couple of the Dwarves, but most nod enthusiastically. Lodi continues.

“There’s a special band that we have— one of the copies of Draupnir, left behind by Odin a long time ago. We’d like you to have it. It’s gold of the highest quality. You could use it to fund your traveling, or maybe save it for something important. Up to you. Our aid, such as it is, is yours, young Scions. But come! Let us eat, and drink, and enjoy each other's company, as brothers and sisters against the Giants and their ilk.”

And at that, a great feast is soon ready for all of you; mead and ale of great quality, sausage and stew and pastries. Truly, a feast fit for heroes!

Do any of you wish to do anything specific before resting for the evening?

Erika breathes easier as Schmitty agrees to come over to their side and be of help. She squeezes his shoulder in gratitude and stays at his side for most of the rest of the day, trying to make him feel accepted and included. Should the dwarves protest or question his addition to the group, she will speak quiet words to them.

Charisma + Presence: 8d10 ⇒ (8, 2, 1, 4, 1, 10, 4, 6) = 36 3 successes plus 1 auto success.

As Chloe rallies the dwarves to their cause, her determination inspires Erika as well and she starts drafting lists of potential allies - who can be trusted, what degree of truth should they reveal to each, what plausible cover stories can they make up otherwise. Her participation in the celebration is reserved - she is on the edges, partaking of the food and drink in moderation between bouts of furious typing on her laptop. Among other things, she drafts up an email to her mother, explaining the situation and asking for her advice.

Should I get Sybil with us? On one hand it would be nice, on the other hand Erika would want to keep her cat safe.

I think we should definitely ally with Cybil, but I don't think she should be a go-into-combat companion for us.

Dustin couldn't help himself. As Chloe gave her badass speech, he freed his mighty blade, raising it with her. When she spoke to him and Ulf, he belted out a response.
"We'll make warriors of all of you, and let the Jotun beware the sons and daughters of the Aesir!"

Dustin would feel a bit sheepish after that, having gotten caught up in the moment, but assuming the comment is meant with enthusiasm, he'll just go with it.

Dustin will offer to help the Dwarves with any food or drink tasks that need doing. He will also talk extensively to Cybil; he, at least, was thrust into this life and given friends and allies. It seemed like Cybil may have had to make a go of it alone, and Dustin would be extremely sympathetic.

He is also an incorrigible flirt, so he will absolutely flirt with Cybil.

Cybil = Scion woman we found in the mine. Sybill = Erika's sphynx cat. This is not going to be confusing at all.

Also at this point I would like for everyone to take 10 Experience Points. You may immediately apply them to your character as you wish or bank them for later use.

Chase crosses his arms as the issue with Schmitty resolves itself. He frowns as the others decide to let him go, still not convinced of the creature's sincerity but everyone else seems fine with it so he raises no further objections.

"This is really going to wreck my selfie game," he says later, upon noticing his current appearance in the reflection of his phone. When he finishes eating he pulls up Fornjot Power Associates; it is time for his real skills to shine. While Chase has the natural skill with the internet that seems to come naturally with digital natives he's no hacker--but he doesn't need to be. Instead, he engages in what actual hackers call "social engineering"; aka really aggressive lying. All he needs is a telephone number or an email address and the fun can begin.

He calls any number he can find associated with the company, adopting at a first a fairly generic demeanor; he trades his natural accent for a typical Midwestern American one. But as his calls continues he drops and switches it whenever necessary and sometimes when it's not--one call he might effect a Georgian tone, dropping his rs and stretching out his words in perfect imitation of a Southern belle. Another he lowers his voice enough that it sounds like he has had a pack-a-day habit for years, a television ready imitation of a New York cop. He even pulls out Canadian at one point--frost giants and Canada seem like a natural fit, after all, and it's worth a shot--and it's a fun accent regardless.

His time with email is less fun to watch if no less impressive. He sets up as many dummy accounts as he can before he gets to work, using them to create a trail he can use to distract anyone who might try and track him down. He uses google and a little help from photoshop to create whatever images he needs--sometimes a smoldering server that can't be research image searched so he can plead with IT for a the backdoor--sometimes an official looking logo from an alphabet agency so he can scare a secretary into telling him whatever he needs. In writing, he disappears even more than he did on the phone--no one would guess that the sternly worded legal memo was written by an Aussie teen whose entire reference point for the American legal system was that one time his parents had rented the Pelican Brief.

Any time he discovers someone who is out of the office for whatever reason he immediately adopts their persona, using clues gathered from social media posts and pictures tagged with their name to forge a convincing simulacra. When somebody doesn't have a social media account, he makes one, using info gleaned and pictures stolen from everyone else's; the panopticon sees everybody whether they like it or not. He does whatever is necessary to find out whatever he can about Fornjot before finally stowing his phone back in his pocket and giving the biggest grin that he can manage.

"I might have picked up a few things," he says.

Manipulation+Presence: 7d10 ⇒ (6, 10, 3, 5, 3, 7, 5) = 39 3 successes +2 auto= 5 successes. Chase is attempting to use social engineering to get as much information about Fornjot as he can
