Dull surprise at its finest.

That's not at all what I thought it meant

Anybody home?

Yes, please. Dungeon Master Player 15/Dungeon Master 13/Monk 2(I'm out of practice!)

I'm indeed here. Work has been...awful...this past week. It's like this every December, not sure why I'm surprised.

I bet he was thinking about Dern.

Quick question before I respond in thread:

Does Von Barla have a provision for the Quarian in that panel of tricks? Because asking one to change is no simple thing. :P

Yes, please. Dungeon Master Player 15/Dungeon Master 13/Monk 2(I'm out of practice!)

C-Sex has taken over Zinnius Dern's mind!

Yes, there would be an over-coat like outfit in the style of C-Def for the quarian.

Salarians are so non-sexual that I just don't think he'd see what the fuss is all about.

For quarians, I suppose something that fits over the enviro-suit makes sense.

Out of curiosity, which version of Shepard are you considering to be "canon" for the purposes of this PbP?

A good question that will be answered via an overheard q and a in the next scene.

I think in this case, we're a "let's get past the part in every PbP where the game stalls out and crashes" group.

Do we know our own presumed ranks? Is it identifiable from our uniforms or the files?

This is a good question-- I'm pretty sure Hestia is the Officer, but I'm not sure about the other three.

I thought Hestia being the Officer was a joke.

That was my thought as well.

Yeah, I don't know the ranks myself but my character should, being in service.

So, I kinda asked about ranks and stuff in my last post, in the spoilers, on the basis that Gir wouldn't know them like your characters would, for the obvious reasons. The following is what FH responded with.

Ranks:
Officer would be the lowest rank, followed by Specialists, who are only slightly above. Sergeant is the first real rank of consequence in C-Def- they can give orders to both Officers and Specialists, although depending on a Specialists speciality, their word can supercede even their Sergeants.

I assumed he was serious about Hestia being one of the two Officers, and laughed because he found the thought of her being the lowest ranked in the group amusing.

I was guessing that Hestia was Officer 1, Grace was the Sergeant, and wasn't sure from there. But I don't think it has been said explicitly yet.

Must not kill coworker...must not...

Yes, that is very much correct.

Must not...kill coworker...must not..

Ah, I thought Officers were higher ranks, then Sergeants lower and Specialists wherever, based on the classic "Don't call me sir! I'm not an officer; I work for a living" line that Sergeants so often say.

If C-Def works like a police force, the ranks would be, from lowest to highest: Officer - Corporal - Sergeant - Lieutenant - Captain. Police detectives generally do not outrank officers or corporals. Note: this only applies to police in the USA, I don't know how it works outside the country, or in-game.

If C-Def works like a military force, the ranks would likely be, from lowest to highest: Private - Corporal - Sergeant, and so on for non-commissioned ranks, and Lieutenant - Captain - Major, etc. for commissioned ranks. Having played the games, the system of rank for the Systems Alliance seems to be a mashup of that of the US Navy and the US Marine Corps. Not sure how that applies to C-Sec/C-Def.

So... I still don't know what Dern is.

A modern major-general?

Well played.

It was a long hole.

*bows*

So it looks more like the police ranks than military. I would bet Hestia and probably Gir are the lowest ranked, then Dern and Grace would be higher (with their combat and field experience).

The uniforms would be marked appropriately?

Indeed, they would be- simple dots to determine rank, just like that show everyone likes

I envisioned C-Def being a police force not a military force because the Citadel doesn't really have a military, at least not in this game- it wouldn't be politic, and the organization needs direction and definition that lies outside of paramilitary, given the bad taste that cerberus left in people's mouths.

This might be better to talk about in character, but given his background I think Dern would be a natural for the specialist, tied with Gir. Grace would be an awesome sergeant, but Hestia does have leadership potential and may want to take the role anyway to rub it in the face of her doubters. Any who aren't really into rank would be best for officer.

Oh, I thought they were assigned.

I wouldn't expect Hestia to have any rank, despite her experience. I mean, if the US Army picked up a bunch of child soldiers in Somalia and "adopted" them, they sure wouldn't give them rank because of their past. They'd want to break and remold them, then see where they go.

I think with teenage contrariness, Hestia would take the lowest rank as an inside joke to herself, not thinking she really deserved it.

Hey, my post didn't post!

Dave this is the greatest thing I have seen in a long long time. I love it.

I'm not sure exactly how to use that (quite good) roll to smooth things over. Hestia has moved from angry to disgusted and is now more tormenting the yokel than being seriously aggressive.

Poor Grace.

When I was a little kid, I saw that episode of M*A*S*H where Radar instinctively calls Hotlips "Sir", then follows up with a befuddled recovery attempt of "Ma'am. Ma'am Sir." It struck me as disrespectful and belittling to her, emphasizing her gender over her rank. As a little girl, I was embarassed to watch it and to be female, if that's how women were treated.

Some other military/SF series have all superior officers addressed as "Sir." This particularly makes sense when dealing with aliens who could conceivably have different gender distinction. It also makes sense for the military, which strives for uniformity and could conceivably decide "we don't care what your gender identification or preference is, you will be SIR, just like everyone else." And I decided that was a better way, so Hestia uses Sir because she was raised in Cerberus, and Cerberus did things right. ;)

Hmm, now I'm wondering, how much of the games' content is public knowledge, in world? I wouldn't have thought the "back from the dead" thing would be, for instance. Maybe military knowledge, and rumour/hearsay, but not common knowledge/publicly acknowledged. Bringing people back from the dead tends to get people all excited, for some reason. :P

Yeah, I didn't think of that until after my post was up for the hour, but I wondered that as well. I think Hestia would know it to be true because it would be quite the triumph for Cerberus. But it might be just an unsavory rumor to the rest of the galaxy. Still, Shepard was known to be lost and then returned. There had to be some story to explain it.

Feel free to slap Hestia around. I am having way too much fun with her.

Being diplomatic is exhausting. It was a whole lot easier being a sociopathic weirdo loner.

Yeah, why do you think I suggested Grace be the commander? And why do you think I'm being such a PITA.

Payback's a b&*@#. ;)

Seriously, what you linked there was hands down the most shocking thing that's happened in a pbp, in my experience. I was floored.

There were... demons that needed to be exorcised.

I just realized that 3/4 of the players in this game were players in that game too. Weird.
