Hmmm... that cloaking field certainly makes this scene interesting!

American thanksgiving is this week, so I expect my own, and other's, posting to become more sporadic. I'm shooting to get two updates in between Thursday and Sunday of this week but we can slow down if people can't post.

@Pippimi, GM complaints about this scene:

Alright...I just noticed that this map is 1 square = THIRTY FEET.* That makes the hut somewhere around 90 feet in diameter! That's a 6,361 square foot house?!? At 90 feet, that house is the size of most maps, and it doesn't have an interior! And that diameter is very much at odds with Xerantha's tactics text, "If the fight becomes too cramped inside her shack, Xerantha attempts to move outside to her garden."

It feels like the hut was originally supposed to have it's own map, which got cut. At this point, I think the opponent is much more effective in a small hut and that a small hut is more thematically fitting so I'm going to keep it at 5 feet per square and just call the whole inside difficult terrain that provides partial cover.

Also the eox street map is 10 feet per square. These keep getting me.

GM Commiseration:
I know! I almost feel like they should have just said "use flip-mat X" because the little inset map for the hut has got to be the most useless map I've ever seen from Paizo. It's also absurdly grainy and low res if you blow it up enough to match their intended 30ft/sq.

I treated the Eox city map as 5ft/sq as well. 10ft made the buildings seem irrationally large, especially the apartment block.

Considering the map issues for these fights, my plan was to use a flip mat for the ellicoth, but have the fight start with the ellicoth approaching from a rise 300ft away, charging the party (Keeping this as a map-less combat in the beginning). This gives the party two rounds of ranged combat before they have to deal with it in melee.

Then, to make up for the fact that the ellicoth is going to be easier to beat, I planned to have Xerantha exit from the nearby hut and join the combat two rounds after the ellicoth reaches melee. Make the players really sweat for those 1 to 2 rounds before the ellicoth falls. *rubs evil GM hands together*

There's a huge amount of clunky bits in this book between the plot and the editing. I ended up making a lot of minor changes.

Zulu, I think you might be using the Line property incorrectly, and in a way that (this fight) has not benefited you.

"Line

This weapon fires a projectile in a straight line that pierces through multiple creatures or obstacles. When attacking with such a weapon, make a single attack roll and compare it to the relevant Armor Class of all creatures and objects in a line extending to the weapon’s listed range increment.

... However, if an attack fails to damage a creature or obstacle hit in the line (typically due to damage reduction or hardness), the path is stopped and the attack doesn’t damage creatures farther away."

You keep rolling well on the first person in your line and not on the other two. I think that means that all three are hit, and the other two rolls aren't necessary.

Let me know what you think, but for now I'm going to apply Round 1 and 2's damage to all three troopers.

Yep, somehow I thought it was the same as the automatic attack cone or blast, but you are right. Reading fail.

Pippimi has a tech item called a grappler, which basically fires a grappling hook attached to a cable line at a target. The rules for doing so are as follows.

This is resolved as a grapple combat maneuver, but a creature struck with the grappler can still use its hands, and its movement is only restricted to remain within range of the length of the grappler’s cable. Or, it can perform a sunder combat maneuver against the grappler. Even if the combat maneuver doesn’t destroy the attached cable, the creature escapes the grapple.

So, questions:

  • I'm guessing this ranged grapple maneuver uses DEX modifier to hit. Should I also get to include +4 for the improved grapple feat? Or +2 from Pippimi's grappling racial trait? Or is it a straight ranged attack roll?
  • Can Pippimi try to reel an enemy grappled this way in? If so, how?
  • The 'normal rules for escaping a grapple' would require a creature grappled this way to make checks against Pippimi's KAC+8, which makes no sense to me. Is that how you're planning to rule it, assuming I try it?

    Zulu, I forgot too! I only looked it up to see if missing the second person cancelled the third person's hit.

    Pippimi, it seems that both bonuses apply! Since it's resolved as a grapple maneuver. Going completely off book here, I think it could be argued that you could do a Reposition maneuver, towards you, using the grapple! That seems reasonable. And... KAC+8 also doesn't make a lot of sense for the grappler but... that's the rule they made? Huh. I suppose it's a combination of your innate dexterity and having the grappling line plugged into your armor? Sure...yeah... that's it.

    Clank, those abilities are perfect for this situation! And against a vampire, nonetheless.

    I think we took a break from posting for a few days last year, but I don't remember quite which days. I'm thinking I'll definitely take the 24-26 off, but I'm fine with taking other break days if most people are unavailable.

    Also, we're nearly at the end of this book so there will be levelling up time soon anyway. Which you might want to look at today Davrin, if you have time. If not, it can wait till post-vacation.

    At those prices it's barely worth selling most of it. I.e., since we have a ship it seems worthwhile to keep a cache of spare weapons on it.

    Thanks for another awesome chapter Ewok. The buildup in this one is interesting, because knowing where we're chasing the cult to, and who else is chasing them... I would expect a direct path to the overall climax of the story arc but we only just finished book 3. So, I take it things don't go quite as expected from here :)

    Yeah, they didn't give you much in the way of loot on Eox. Mostly just threw more small fries at you than big guns. And half the creatures used natural attacks.

    Also, Pippimi would you mind leveling up our ship to Level 7? I think you did it last time.

    Lenny, you're right this book had an interesting build up! It was a fun way to get us to Eox, even if it was a weird tangent. And I'm glad you liked it! I'm halfway through reading Book 4 right now and it's looking to be a great one.

    And no rush on leveling quickly, I want to double-check that everyone is done on Eox then post a Book 3 epilogue, then get us introduced to Book 4. So we have at least three days of fluff before Level ups start being important.

    Too bad cash is so scarce in this AP, I had really wanted to load Zulu down with power armor and plasma weapons, but quickly determined cash wasn't gonna allow for it before I wasted feats into power armor and heavy weapons

    Yeah, this AP is pretty stingy. I think they were still feeling out how generous they could be with dropped equipment vs. direct credits. The later APs are way better about throwing useful and relevant equipment directly into your hands.

    Time for a look behind the curtain!

    Yeah, the other problem we have (that I still need to rectify) is six-player adjustments. The books are unapologetically written for four players, with no six player mods. That leaves us with several problems.

    1. Less loot per player.
    2. Easier combats. (This is slightly offset by the lower character wealth, but not a lot.)

    I've been rounding up, sometimes heavily, the cash drops to try and fix #1. (Which is why all three of the eoxian cash drops were conveniently 6000.) I've had a light hand on it so far because I've had bad experiences in the past where I allowed the party to get into a character wealth spiral where the party was overpowered and overcomplicated to play. And, the more I fix #1 the worse #2 gets.

    This book was the first time I've addressed #2. In three fights (The starships, ghouls, and boss fight) I either increased dice modifiers or enemy count to make the fight more difficult. I think those were pretty successful without becoming two difficult or drawn out.

    In book four I'm planning on increasing loot more than I have been and increasing the difficulty of more combats.

    And as for the Character Operations Manual, to be honest, I haven't purchased or read it yet (haven't played a starfinder character in a while). So, let's continue with the same ruling we've had; anything on the Starfinder Society Additional Resources "legal" list is fine for this game. AND, we can make exceptions where reasonable, thematic, and fair. (IE: non-operatives garrotes)

    Also, Pippimi, would you mind levelling up the ship for us? (Or anybody, but I feel like Pip did it last time.)

    OK! Starship is up to Tier 7. I was debating quite a bit about whether or not to bump us up from an explorer chassis to a bigger one in order to get some additional weapon mounts. But ultimately, the smaller chassis gives you better AC and maneuverability.

    Also, thanks for the go ahead on COM stuff thats been approved for SFS. I think the organized play folks did a pretty decent job banning the problematic stuff (though they missed a couple things as well).

    I think the fights could be a bit more difficult in general (though this last one against the boss was suitably tricky!), considering our large party.

    Yeah, I was listening to a playthrough of the boss fight and theirs went pretty easily so I definitely wanted to make sure it got the attention it deserved!

    And for COM stuff, would you guys please post up what you bought so I can familiarize myself? That would be helpful.

    Great boss fight, felt pretty close for a bit there. I was pretty happy to be able to go all Schlock Mercenary with my plasma rifle for a bit.

    I don't have any purchase plans (saving for a new rifle), but I am curious if anyone else wanted that freebooter II armor? Cause I'll take it if noone wants it

    And so we continue the trend of the AP starting with some starship stuff. If... this encounter leads to starship combat, I am a little reticent to start a starship battle with the looming holiday.

    What does everybody think? Are we able to post often enough to do one throughout the two weeks? Maybe we compromise and intentionally plan on doing two-day rounds so that people have an extra 24 hours to post? (I want to make sure we avoid having to bot 2-3 people every round.)

    Not that this has to lead to starship combat, there are other possibilities.

    I'm going to have some times in the next two weeks where it'll definitely be tricky to post. Thankfully, gunning in Starship Combat is super straightforward, so I should be able to get a post in at least every other day.

    BTW Zoran, if you end up taking two more Envoy levels and feel like you want to pick up something to help Pippimi land even more grapples, I recently learned about the Coordinated Maneuvers improvisation.
