Round 3 (ongoing):
The quasit opens the door and slips through, the door closing behind it.
Everyone can act!
Apollonia Vigilanium |
Grrr....
Nia skids to a stop and wrenches at the door to open.
DM Carbide |
Since the room is otherwise dark, Nia can see a glow emanating from the passage to the east.
DM Carbide |
No problem with Ilryan having cast it already.
Ilryan North |
No problem with Ilryan having cast it already.
He'll move all the way into the room, then.
DM Carbide |
Can Ilryan get that far with a double move? He was back with Garrick and Vidar, and only has a 20' movement speed.
Garrick Oakbeard |
So... ever forget that you didn't take the archetype that traded away fast movement, and realize that you can move 30 and not 20?
That means I should be 40 feet ahead of where I was - 2 double moves -- and should be able to keep up with the others hunting down the monster. (Not sure if that would have given me line of sight in the first round when Nia shot him)
I made that adjustment - as for this round, I haven't yet moved, I'll delay until Nia opens the door and then follow the Quasit with another double [12 spaces]
DM Carbide |
Oops. I hate it when I do that.
Ilryan North |
Can Ilryan get that far with a double move? He was back with Garrick and Vidar, and only has a 20' movement speed.
My bad! I was thinking 30 ft. move speed. I'll move myself back.
Apollonia Vigilanium |
We can Run as a full-round action for x4 move speed.
DM Carbide |
I was under the impression that you could only do that in a straight line, or it would have done that as well. Shall we reset to the beginning of the chase, then?
ETA: I was right. From the description of the Run full-round action:
When you run, you can move up to four times your speed in a straight line (or three times your speed if you're in heavy armor).
Apollonia Vigilanium |
Nah, let's just continue as we have been.
DM Carbide |
Also, no need, since it's not possible to take a Run action in the dungeon. However, I am still not sure how you all have gotten this far in three rounds. Let me take another look.

Round 3 (ongoing; reset);
Initiative order
Quasit-acted
Party
The quasit opens the door and flies through, the door closing behind it.
Party up!
DM Carbide |
Who's going to open the door?
Apollonia Vigilanium |
Nia will open the door. She's the trapfinder, after all.
DM Carbide |
It looks like you're more than one move away from the door. Garrick and Vidar are the only ones who can reach it and still be able to open it.
Garrick Oakbeard |
That's weird. She's as fast as the rest of us, I think. However, I'll do it.
Garrick reaches the door and pulls it open, deliberately exposing himself to whatever may lie on the other side, Better me than one of those softer tall folk...
DM Carbide |
Nia also spent an action taking a shot at it, while the rest of you have been doing double moves.
DM Carbide |
Garrick steps up and cautiously opens the door. There is nothing obviously visible on the other side, but a faint glow from the eastern exit suggests that the glowing quasit fled in that direction.
Garrick Oakbeard |
Garrick says, "Looks like it went east based on the faerie fire, but I can't be sure."
DM Carbide |
Is anyone going to pursue?
DM Carbide |
Just waiting to see if you're going to continue to pursue piecemeal, or wait and go as a group.
Apollonia Vigilanium |
I think we should follow as fast as people can follow it or else we risk losing it. But Nia's not in front, so there's no risk to her.
DM Carbide |
OK, with that as the working assumption:
Garrick opens the door. Vidar holds back from going through until Nia has done so, but follows her after she does. Nia is able to tell that the still-glowing quasit is indeed in the corridor going east. Ilryan hustles as best he can.
Next round;
Nia sees the quasit continue east. It opens the door at the end of the hall and passes through, the door closing behind it. Garrick holds the door for Ilryan, then goes through himself. Nia and Vidar continue the chase, neither reaching the door.
Next round:
Vidar steps up and opens the door. Nia and Garrick go through; not seeing any telltale glow from any of the shafts, they make for (but don't reach) the hall leading south. Vidar waits, holding the door for Ilryan, who is by now well behind everyone else.
Next round:
Nia heads down the hall in time to see the door at its end close. She and Garrick are able to reach the door, but don't have time to open it. Ilryan makes it through the previous door, and Vidar reaches the hall going south.
The map shows the status as we return to normal combat time. What do you all do?
Garrick Oakbeard |
Garrick sighs, "Thinking this be a wild-quasit chase. Wee beastie's going to run out the spell, and then we're back to nothing. I say leave him for now - either it'll leave, which is good, or we'll come back fully prepared to kill it. Have to think one good web spell would totally ruin its day."
Apollonia Vigilanium |
Nia nods. "I'm fine with that. Let's go back to its lair and smash those altars then get out of here."
DM Carbide |
Take a look at where you are...as far as you're able to tell, the quasit is in a room with no other exits.
Ilryan North |
"Let's continue on. That fiend is a menace."
Ilryan will continue to follow, opening doors as necessary.
Garrick Oakbeard |
Garrick pauses a moment then says, "Wait. There's no way out of that last room. Let's gather up together, rush in and close the door behind us."
DM Carbide |
The party prepares for the rush. Garrick throws open the door and everyone piles through...into the spherical room with the permanent levitation effect. Everyone's momentum carries them across the room.
Round 1:
Initiative order
Nia
Vidar
Quasit
Garrick
Ilryan
Nia and Vidar are up! Remember that you're floating, with no easy way to move. The quasit is up near the top of the room, so around fifteen feet away from you.
Garrick Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Ilryan Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Vidar Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Quasit Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Apollonia Vigilanium |
Three questions: Did we get the door closed? Is the Faerie Fire still active/can we see it? Can we do zero-gee shenanigans like bouncing off the wall with a Dex or Acrobatics check or something?
DM Carbide |
Vidar was able to close the door, the faerie fire is still active, and you can try to move around the room by bouncing off of each other and the walls.
Apollonia Vigilanium |
Not needing solid ground under her feet to shoot, Nia twists herself around to launch a crossbow bolt at the burning purple outline near the ceiling.
Xbow: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Cold Iron Bolt: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Garrick Oakbeard |
Garrick coils his short legs against the wall and prepares to launch himself at the little glowing target.

Ilryan
Nia takes advantage of the quasit's surprise at being attacked, and her crossbow bolt is on target. It glances off the creature's scaly hide, though. Missed her flatfooted AC by 1! Vidar energizes Garrick, but before he can act the quasit flits by Vidar and slashes at him with one claw. Take 1 HP nonlethal damage, Vidar, and DC 14 Fort save or take 2 points DEX damage.
Garrick and Ilryan can act!
Claw damage: 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Potential DEX damage: 1d2 ⇒ 2
DM Carbide |
Vidar feels a tingling numbness pervade his fingers and toes, robbing them of some of their wonted skill.
Garrick Oakbeard |
Garrick pushes against the wall with his legs, swinging the axe as he passes the creature.
Waraxe: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 1 = 24 for 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
DM Carbide |
Do you have the cold iron weapon blanch on your axe?
