Not being particularly stealthy or good at identifying plants in the dark, Kargas opts to remain in the mouth of the cave keeping an eye out and trusting his lightning resistance to protect him from any curious shocker lizards.

Your group, minus Kargas, head back out into the night in search of bitterbark trees. You exit swiftly from behind the waterfall, and its not until you're fairly far out before you hear the sound of ogre shouts rise up from the walls. Luckily, you are spotted late enough that no more than a few poorly aimed javelins land among your team. The ogres shout in irritation, but don't pursue.

With Kellek's guidance, locating the bitterbark trees doesn't take long. But harvesting a sufficient quantity of bark takes a couple of hours of carefully spotting, carving and stripping trees. Kaven, though more than willing to join in with cutting and stripping bark, proves only a passable woodsman.

While you're hard at work, Kargas keeps watch over the shocker lizard tunnels. Although he doesn't spot any lizards probing upward out of their lair, he does end up hearing some interesting noises that lead him toward the far eastern end of the cavern, where the tunnel starts turning down into the earth. Low vibrations through the eastern wall (Wall marked in red) alert him to the fact that the rock here is surprisingly thin. He eventually senses that the vibrations are deeply muffled ogre voices, yelling. And the wall in this location has been broken through (likely many years ago) and rebuilt with stone and clay.

(This wall can be fairly easily broken through to get access to the internal courtyard of the Fort)
-----

After regrouping with Vale and Jakardros to coordinate a new distraction, the away team sneaks back in through the waterfall entrance and joins Kargas inside. You place your sizable mound of bitterbark at the entrance to the lower tunnels. Guiness thrusts his hammer into the mass and in moments the bark begins to smolder. Through improvised means you direct the smoke down into the tunnels below.

For long minutes of work at fanning the smoke, there's no sign that the lizards have been affected. But then suddenly you start hearing distant echoes - squawking noises coming up the tunnel entrance. The noises get louder, more frequent. And then an echoing cacophony begins filling the air.

A half dozen shocker lizards surge up out of the smoke, flailing wildly and charging for freedom - and through your group!

With the lizards debilitated, this isn't a combat encounter. They're just trying to get through you. What do you do?

The massive half-orc hulking just beyond the edge of the acrid smoke causes the throng of shocker lizards to skid to a halt. Their panicked confusion has them butting up to one another and crackling with electricity. For a moment it looks like they might choose to blast a path out with a massive electric blast, but when Kargas delivers a bestial roar they turn tail and rush back the way they came.

Lizard squawks and hacking coughs continue for a while longer, accompanied by the echoing sounds of cracking wood. Few other lizards attempt to probe the same path to the surface and those that do are easily repelled by the sight and sound of Kargas. Within a few minutes, the sound of lizards has mostly faded away and the echoes sound distant and muffled. There's still plenty of smoke in the tunnels, and there's enough bark to continue burning for a while.

Kaven coughs despite the wet cloth he placed across his mouth and nose. "Bloody well worked. What now?"

Tunnels it is!

Interested in taking advantage of the confusion while it lasts, you head right into the shocker lizard tunnels. The cloying, acrid smoke of the bitterbark fills the air as you descend, leading you to hack and cough and close your eyes against the irritant.

Kellek Fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Guiness Fort: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20
Kargas Fort: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Flo Fort: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Colvyn Fort: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Kaven Fort: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

Despite teary eyes and a burning sensation in the nose and lungs, Guiness, Flo, Kaven and Colvyn handle the bitterbark well enough. Kellek and Kargas on the other hand suffer more severely, barely able to do much more than stagger through the smoke in search of an area of clearer air. (The two of you are nauseated while you remain in the smoke, then sickened for a number of minutes after you leave it)

The smoke in the tunnels is thin enough that you can see a practical distance ahead of yourselves. The ramp down leads to a network of warrens - dank caves of dirt and stone that bend dizzyingly. The path narrows to as small as three feet wide at points, and the claws of exposed roots hang from the ceiling. You don't see any shocker lizards, but you see evidence of their nests as you travel, a clear indication that you must have driven about two dozen out ahead of you.

You emerge from the warrens by clambering through the splintered remains of several thick wooden boards. The room you enter has heavy stone blocks for its floor, walls and ceiling. Once, it may have served as a jailer's den or a torture chamber, but obviously until recently it served as a storeroom for food. However, right now its in complete disarray, crates and barrels smashed, singed and scattered. Little to no edible foodstuffs lie scattered with the broken containers.

The bitterbark smoke in the cellar is significantly thinner, a relief after the warrens. (Kellek and Kargas are no longer nauseated, but they're sickened for 2d4 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6 minutes)

The banded iron door to the west side of the room remains closed, but the wooden door to the north hangs off its hinges. Beyond, to the north, a stairwell leads up. You hear the distant sound of combat - squeaks and squeals of shocker lizards and the grunts and yells of ogres.

Ignoring the side room for now, you cast some preparatory spells and rush up the stairs toward the sounds of combat! As you climb the stairs, you have to clamber over several badly bludgeoned shocker lizards as well as one horribly scorched ogre.

At the top of the stairs you emerge into a storeroom. Crates, barrels, and a stack of firewood have been smashed apart and heaped in a tangled pile in the
corner of this room. A flight of stairs leads down to the west. The door to the south is open to a long, 10-ft wide hallway lined with doors on both sides. The bodies of pulverized shocker lizards line the hall. At the end of the hall, you spot an ogre currently engaged with two more of them, swinging his greatclub in an attempt to smash them as then electrocute his feet. To the east side, an ogre inside a side room is jabbing at another shocker lizard at the door to his room.

Both ogres are too busy with their own battles to notice your group arrive on the scene. From the sound of the ogre grunts and bellows, there's more fighting going on somewhere in the Fort.

If you'd like to engage combat, feel free to start taking actions as if you'd won initiative. If not, you have a moment to take stock of the situation and add any more magic.

Kellek does not oppose Guiness's idea, knowing that now would be the time to fall upon the ogres while they are preoccupied by the lizards, giving the lizards more time to cause more mayhem in their ranks, but realizing that Guiness (the dwarven lightning rod) with all of his short-range weapons might not be the best choice for leading such a charge. Though if Colvyn (an archer) and Flo (a spellcaster herself) were to vote for the alternative he would agree to lend his brand of ranged magic to the mix relegating the dwarf, and Kargas to the roll of guards.

Or 'meatshields' in the vulgar argot.

In response to Flo's question, Kaven steps into the hallway and points down toward where Colvyn is standing. Speaking in a low voice he says "Right round the corne'." He draws his weapons and gets ready for a fight.

Kargas swings open the easterly door and finds a room that appears to have been a library. A long table with benches to either side sits opposite a bookshelf filled with dozens of books, most of which have been torn from the shelves, mangled, and then messily stuffed back in place. There's no sign of any ogres there right now, but a small door in the north-east corner likely leads into one of the fort's turrets.

Guiness on the other hand finds something worse. The door he opens leads into what appears to be a gruesome mockery of an infirmary. Once used to house the wounded and sick, this chamber is now a slice of blood-drenched nightmare. Hacked pieces of bodies litter the sick beds. The floor is slick with gore, strewn with mangled organs and heaps of entrails. The most intact individual lies upon the operating table, his guts spill out of a large slash in his belly.

An ogre wearing a bloodstained smock stands holding a still-squirming shocker lizard in one massive hand, while he carves away at it with the ogre hook in his other hand. When the door swings open, he grins and turns to face Guiness. In giant he hollers "Oh goodie, not just lizards today!"

So, there are several approaches we could take, with the most conservative being to open every door and deal with enemies in smaller groups, hoping to leave no hostiles behind us. The most aggressive approach would be to charge ahead and try to get to the commanders of the ogres before they can prepare and engage them in battle, but it leaves the risk of their troups coming up behind us and having a two front battle. Guiness will do as Floredana asks in the heat of battle, but we may want to consider having a rear-guard if we charge up the stairs further.

The ogre groans in pain as Kargas delivers a powerful slash into its belly. Although its wounds are piling up, it remains standing for now and seems more angry than frightened of the assortment of heroes lined up against it.

In a rumbling voice, the ogre speaks in giant "You fight too much. Hold still. I'll turn you into art." and swings down with his ogre hook. The first swing cleaves through one of Kargas' images, crushing the nearby bed and sending loose pieces of gore flying. The second sideways swing tries to catch Kaven, but the rogue nimbly ducks out of the way.

Down the hall, you hear the sounds of an ogre getting electrocuted and falling. Colvyn also sees the shocker lizard directly to the south getting skewered on a hook and tossed aside. The ogre that killed it steps out of the room he was in. In giant he yells "It's da rat with the bow! They inside!"

Kaven spits on the ogre and flips his dagger before rejoining the group "Yeh fight like a whirlwind." He grins "Commander's quarters'r up top. Meetin' room too."

Guiness and Kargas lead the way up the stairs, Kaven a step behind them. The upper floor is a bit quieter, distanced as it is from the continued fracas downstairs. The wide hallway here is stained with marks of dried blood, signs of bloody corpses having been dragged along. The doors along the hall are all closed, but Kaven whispers where they lead. "North 'ta south - the ol' chapel, meetin' room, an' the commander's quarters."

Perception DC20; Hearing something:
You catch the sound of someone eating noisily coming through the door to the chapel.

Now:
Flo delivers a divine blessing to the group moments before Guiness opens the door. Even at a glance, the room beyond was clearly once a chapel to the god of the hunt. Pelts and antlers still hang from the walls, though among them also hang smoked and dried carcasses, many of them humanoid. A symbol has been painted in blood over Erastil's bow - what appears to be a bloody, three eyed jackal.

Among the pews sits a large silver tray piled high with carved roast meat, the aroma of which floats over to your team. Standing next to the tray is a mountain of an ogre, easily 14ft in height with arms like tree trunks. He licks his massive fingers one last time and regrips his ogre hook. In surprisingly competent common, he says "Lucrecia thought you lot would be behind this. Nice of ye to come straight to me." He rubs a thumb along the haft of his ogre hook "Lutch, your favorite food's on the menu." The ogre hook begins to glow a dim red.

The burst of flame envelops the ogre, catching him before he can duck for cover. He emerges with angry red burns along his skin, but doesn't seem too heavily injured. As Kargas rushes in, the ogre grins and lashes out with his hook, a trail of red smoke following the weapon. The arc of his swing is perfect, opposing Kargas' momentum with the ogre's tremendous strength, and the tip of the hook pierces right through the half-orc's chest and out the other side.

Luckily, the seemingly mortal wound cuts through an image rather than the genuine article. (Mirror image paying for itself many times over by voiding a crit)

Guiness finds the ogre adept at defending himself from flanking attacks. His ogre hook whips around to send Dragonfist off course and Guiness' remaining attacks smash the nearby pews rather than his intended target. Kargas finds his readied attack easily parried as well.

Colvyn finds the ogre a clear target, but only manages to sink the first arrow in the creature's tough muscle. The second and third arrows narrowly miss, skimming inconsequential cuts as they fly by.

Seeing how fearsome the ogre is, Kaven decides to stick to range. He drops his melee weapons and draws a longbow. With true beginners luck, he sinks an arrow into the ogre's cheek.

The ogre lets out a low chuckle. "Oh ho ho. I like it. Keep trying." He takes a single massive step toward the door and the less well protected members of the party, then swings his hook at those engaged in melee with him. The hook emits a keening scream as it arcs through the air at Guiness, blowing past his guard and tearing right into the gap between joints of his full plate. The ogre buries the hook deep inside Guiness' torso, then tears the weapon free with a spray of blood (Critical dealing 101 damage after DR!) He wastes no time with swinging across to Kargas, shattering another image.

"Jaagrath K-kreeg. S&$*." Kaven stammers out the name at the sight.

The ogre grins, glancing at the Black Arrow "Oh, you look familiar."

Kellek raises his hand and... (very likely misses).

imprecise ray of enfeeblement v Ogre (bless, Arcane pool CL 10, range touch, Fort DC 16): 1d20 + 6 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 6 + 1 - 4 = 10 Str penalty: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

He then moves 5' to gain some cover.

Back to back crits! Flo would a Bit of Luck be doable? Guiness looks to only be -1hp so a good offense might be best...

The massive ogre ducks under Kellek's debilitating beam, recognizing the danger, if not the precise spell. The ray narrowly misses.
