Letitia identifies the potion and Samuel tucks it and the jewel away. She is not sure what the jar of earwigs would be useful for, there are not many spells that use bugs like that as a component. They must have some other use.

The woman on the other side of the enclosure pushes open one of the dividing cloths and sticks her head through slowly. when she sees that you are not someone familiar to her she trows the curtain the rest of the way open.

You see her fully now, a beautiful, barefoot young human woman with long, dark hair wearing a simple homespun dress. She speaks in common, though heavily accented.

"Oh thank the gods! Are you here to save me? But how would that be, you wouldn't know me or my plight... Whatever your cause to be here, it is a blessing that I am found on your path! Please let me come with you and get away from this horrid place and its evil Warden."

When the woman appears, she looks her over skeptically. "You are a very trusting sort. How do you know we are not worse than this warden?" she smirks.

Letitia gives the other a warning look, hoping that they have the wits to not blurt out their goals to a total stranger, attractive as she may be. "Tell us of your plight, and how you came to be here, and we'll consider your request."

The woman seems a bit thrown off by Letitia's cool manner.
"well, yes, perhaps I am trusting you too quickly. But you are the first outsiders I have seen here yet, and I am feeling a bit desperate. I heard you speaking in Taldane, which is not so common here. Besides, just you telling me I shouldn't be so trusting makes me think you're more likely to be trustworthy. Otherwise you would just accept my faith and betray me, right?

She slows down for a moment and tries again.
"my name is Anna. I am the daughter of a minor lord in a kingdom to the west of this land. I was given away by my own father in barter to the witches of this tower, in exchange for some boon.

Now I am forced to do unspeakable things... things well beneath my station as a princess. cleaning, cooking, mending, feeding horrible beasts... it's terrible. And I have not seen sunlight in what feels like years. in truth I don't know how long I have been here, or even if it is day or night.

The warden keeps us here, not letting us see the outside. Many here serve the witches in payment for some debt or another, not out of our own volition. The warden is a horrible monster that can change her shape. she appears human, but she is a beast under that facade. If you see her you must kill her before she is able to take control of your mind, or force you into your own debt of servitude here...

She stands close to Samuel, lightly placing her hand on his forearm.
"please, free me from her imprisonment and take me from this place! I will see that you are well rewarded"

Llewellyn:

You feel like she is telling the truth. She is probably exaggerating a bit, and she is clearly not afraid to try to use feminine charm to get her way but she seems to be telling the truth.

"but you all look worn out. Perhaps it is best if you rest here a moment before we carry on. I have food, and there is enough room here for you to sleep. Surely we have a better chance of escape if you are well rested.

You all level up to level 8! Posting usually slows down a bit at the end of the year, use that time to get your sheets in order!

Samuel is somehow surprised by the demeanor of the princess seem to be, and tries to double check her words and actions for traces of mischief.

But in general he tends to get taken by the story of forced servitude "It seems like the kind of thing the witches do" the Taldan looks back thinking on his own sister.

Then looks at the others "I know we are looking for certain objects here to open our path, but maybe we have room to help Anna. What do you think?"

Letitia listens attentively to the woman, picking out subtle hints and clues she might be dropping. Most notably, the woman claims to be a noble but was vague about her title and station.

"A princess! So you are Princess... Anna? What is your family name, and from which kingdom do you hale?

If Anna gives the name of the kingdom and her lineage, Letitia considers if she's heard of it.

She glances at Samuel, who is thinking about bringing her along. "Only if she proves to be useful." She turns back to Anna. "This warden. Tell me what sort of 'monster' she can become. Describe it in detail if you do not know what it is, for many creatures can disguise their shape. What 'horrible beasts' do you feed? Where are they located?"

Callix pauses, I've been spending too much time with Letitia, as now I'm half-convinced this Anna is actually the Warden having told us her tricks.., then shakes her head.

She nods at Letitia's questions, "The more we know, the more able we will be to help.... though it might be good to learn of the other prisoners, too."

In truth Llewellyn found the idea of forced servitude unconscionable, but he was never a fan of the aristocracy and couldn't resist a little dig at her expense.

Echoing the Jadwiga's words he said in a mock serious stage whisper to Samuel with a wink that Anna couldn't see, "Indeed. It seems to me she doesn't have the worst life here, cleaning, cooking, mending that's honest work. I wouldn't be surprised if her lot was rather better than that of the average peasant her father lords over..."

Turning to face the girl he added, "Soo we're a bit skeptical of your story, but maybe you're telling the truth? More details would help! Perhaps we could do something about these 'horrible monsters' but I'd like to know what we're getting ourselves into first..."

"We were warned about a hag before, perhaps that is the Warden" Samuel says thinking on the questions asked by Letitia.

The Taldan smiles in appreciation of Llewellyn worries about honest work "Yeah, we also have a pack of those kind of rotted nobles back in the Empire"

She laughs when Letitia asks her if she is a princess. "No, I am not a princess. My father is a Duke, lord of Orost. As a daughter of a duke, I do not have a title of my own, but you may refer to me as 'mistress' or 'my lady'

She looks directly at Samuel, her hand still on his arm. "or you can just call me Anna" she says with a smile.

Letitia:

You have heard of the city of Orost. it is a trading town in between Mirnbay and Orlov, which has been growing in importance to those vying for control of the region.

She ignores the jabs about how the work she is put through doesn't sound all that horrifying.

When Samuel mentions a hag she shrugs
"That may be what she is. I don't know much about them, other than stories for children. but since coming here and seeing monsters first hand I believe a lot more of those fairy tales. She takes several forms, sometimes an old woman, sometimes one much younger. her true form is a hunchbacked creature with green skin and an ugly face. but what makes her a monster is her cruelty and spitefulness.

The creatures here are a weird collection. they serve the witches, some because they want to and some because they are forced. there are evil spirits, poisonous plants, hyenas, a giant spider, creatures from other planes...

Down that hall to the south is a nasty fey creature obsessed with blood. To the east is a bull that can spew poison gas when it is angry. to the north is a nasty flying goat man and his giant plant. They make me feed the bull and plant regularly.

Llewellyn considered her words, wondering what a goat man could be?

Sounds like a satyr or other fey, but dicebot says no.

He then wondered about the bad tempered bull, but had no idea.
The bull is probably a Gorgon, but again dicebot says no. I hope one of you is able to ID due to the breath weapon... :)

Letitia raises an eyebrow. Yet you called yourself a princess, she muses to herself.

She sets aside the question of Anna's story for the moment as she provides information about the sorts of creatures they will soon encounter.

Samuel smiles, increasingly delighted with Anna's grab "Indeed, the goatman and his plant are no more of an issue as Callix says."

"Is this a save place to have a rest Anna?" the Taldan looks at the beds around and decides it is indeed a good place "It looks the most comfortable place we have slept in for a few weeks already"

Samuel will take first watch.

Letitia:

Letitia notices some inconsistency to the way that Anna refers to herself, but keeps it to herself for the moment.

She tries to think through some options as to what a fey obsessed with blood might be. There are many types of fey that are very interested in bloodlines but not necessarily blood itself. Perhaps a redcap? nasty little fey that dip their hats in the blood of their victims in order to gain power.

She thinks that the bull is probably a Gorgon. nasty creatures with metal-hard skin that can turn living things to stone with their breath weapons.

Llewellyn tries to come up with some guesses about the monsters described, but comes up short.

In response to questions asked to her Anna says
"yes, this area should be safe. they almost never come in here to check on me unless I skip out on my duties. Seems like most of the creatures here stick to their areas and don't stir up trouble with each other.

There are a few beds here but I haven't had companions for a little while. I had a friend who lived in that room She points to the last section that you haven't opened yet But she... she was killed. there was another woman in her but I haven't seen her in several days, I think she might be gone too now.

To Letitia she says
"Perhaps it knows me by now. I am scared of it, I usually try to put out food for it when it is asleep or not looking and then run away, but by now it should know who I am... but I'm no good in a fight if it attacks!

and finally to Samuel she says
"Do you know what kind of key it is that you seek? there are a lot of locks in this place, and it seems like the witches make anything into a key. even people sometimes. I don't know if it is true, but I have heard a rumor. that the ring worn by the warden is a powerful key. it gives her power over this very mountain. At least that's what I heard

Samuel's interest quickly shifts to the warden's ring "Mmmm... that sounds like a good candidate for the key we are looking for. Because it is no normal key, ..." he looks at Letitia and leaves it there, for he starts to feel her annoyed look at him "...but one that should enable us to achieve magical travel"

"Do you have any idea how we can find the warden?" the man smiles, really wanting to believe Anna.

Letitia folds her arms and glares at Samuel as he cannot refrain from talking about the objects they seek within this fortress.

"Yes, though it's hardly surprising that someone with the title of Warden possesses keys, no?"

She tries to change the topic away from what they seek and toward what they could still learn from Anna about Artrosia -- assuming she could be trusted.

"Let's discuss this bull we may have to face. If you haven't been outside in perhaps years, where do you get the beast's fodder? Is it stored near here? When is its next feeding time, because as you said, if you're late in your duties 'they' will come to chastise you. Who will come?"

Assuming it is a gorgon, what kind of food do they eat? Grain? Hay? Meat?

The bull is kind of like a machine, except that it has to eat. I don't understand it myself, but we feed it stone. it prefers stone that it makes by turning creatures to stone, so when rats or other small animals are found they are brought here in little cages and I bring them in to the bull's area. That half-fiend satyr brings the food, I deliver it. if he can't find animals, he brings me certain stones to feed the beast. But if you have already killed Poryphanes we might not get a delivery of food to serve the bull.

Maybe one of you has some knowledge of poisons that I do not, but I don't know how effective normal poisons would be against something that eats rocks... you can't really mix something in to it very easily, right?"

In response to the question of what happened to the other woman, she responds with obvious anger in her eyes

We were close. I didn't have anyone else to talk to, she was like a sister to me. She said mean things about the warden, and tried to stand up to her. The warden killed her with her evil magic. it was.... horrific.

Llewellyn:

You get the feeling she is telling the truth about her companion dying and that it was at the hands of the warden. but you feel like there is more to the story that she is not telling you, and the anger she is showing seems deeply personal

To Letitia she says
I am supposed to feed it tomorrow. but without something to feed it, I don't know what to do about it.

"This idea about the poison is intriguing. Maybe we can collect a few stones so you can feed it. Can we do anything about solving this with poison?" Samuel inquiries Letitia and Llewellyn, thinking they might know more about the topic.

The Taldan leans his musket over his shoulder and smirks "Although I am sure the stone bull will enjoy even more my lead"

Letitia shakes her head at the poisoning suggestions. "The beast's constitution is likely greater than its mind. While I can probably brew something, I would have a far greater chance of dealing with it like we dealt with the boar." She doesn't elaborate, trusting that her companions will recall how she put the fiendish boar to sleep during the ravens' challenges.

She turns back to Anna. "Though, why would we need to deal with the beast at all? Does it guard something? If it's in a pen or chamber by itself, we should just leave it alone. Let it chew on the walls."

Though the gorgon would likely be a fearsome foe, it was still a distraction. Letitia sought to glean more information about the Warden. When Anna describes the death of her friend, she asks for more details. "What sort of magic? Did you witness it firsthand? Could you describe what she did? It may be hard to relive, but if you wish us to help you we need all the information you are able to provide."

"I am sorry I do not know much about magic. I didn't see exactly what killed her, but she came running down the corridor sayign that the Warden sent a horrifying creature after her. she backed into a corner yelling 'get away, get away from me!', but I couldn't see anything else in the room. then she screamed and fell dead.

This sounds like it could have been a Phantasmal Killer, a horrifying illusion of a creature visible only to the target of the spell that kills them from fear.

"I don't have any reason to say that Anna has been lying to us, but that doesn't mean we should trust her word. She could be a skilled liar. She might have very good reasons to hate and fear the Warden, but keep in mind we may need to ally ourselves with her. Don't let a pretty face sway you from our true goal."

Callix suppresses her laugh at Letitia's comment, but can't hide the wry smile, but then sobers, "I'm thinking this Gorgon is likely some sort of guardbeast... and I think it might be best if it can't join in the fight against the Warden - or her cronies. That said, we don't need to actually kill it to accomplish that, I imagine."

But he changes then to a more serious tone "Well, if you think the poison is not going to affect the gorgon. I would say, we look for the warden"

It sounds like yes, we can rest here.

Llewellyn had no idea what the Jadwiga was saying and he shrugged when it was decided that poisoning the Gorgon was unlikely. Turning to Anna he asked, "Does this warden patrol the area or are we going to have to find their quarters?"

yes my intention was to allow you to rest here, the discussion with Anna has taken a while, but the space is still safe to spend a night recovering and prepping

Anna doesn't seem bothered by you speaking in another language but clearly doens't understand what you're saying.

When asked about the body she shakes her head I do not know. she took it away after casting her spell, and i have not seen the body again

To Samuel she says
I do not know where to find her. She has the ability to transport herself throughout this fortress. I haven't seen it all but know it is massive. you will need to find a way to get her to come to you or trap her or else she can escape.

You get the feeling she is not telling the whole story about her friend's death, she seemed to have carefully chosen her words about the body

Letitia huffs and glowers at Llewellyn. Then she turns to the others who can understand her.

Minkaian:

"Ignore the orc-blood. We need to ally with the Warden. Anna's fear of her should not be ours. Remember..."

Letitia points to Ashling.

Minkaian:

"...we bear the mantle of the Black Rider. Unless the Warden is a usurper, she is likely our contact here."

Letitia turns to Anna. "It sounds like this Warden is terribly dangerous, and if you're not a fighter, you shouldn't be with us when we confront her. We know of the way out of this place. We can guide you out."

Samuel is bewildered by Anna's grace and can't notice other thing that her near softness and warmth "I do not think it is safe to leave Anna alone in this wilderness. The girl is no fighter and this is a dangerous place."

The man stares back at the girl "I propose you stay here Anna, until we deal with the business in this place. Once we are done, we will come for you. And if something happens to us, you can still endure this one more day and hope for another chance"

Samuel is happy to take first watch. That might give him a chance to talk with Anna a bit more without the others talking around in their strange tongues.

Anna is surprised by your suggestion that she stay here, and looks like she is weighing her options. Try to come with you but be in harm's way, or stay here and trust that you'll come back for her.

After a few moments she nods
"You are right I cannot fight. I would only slow you down. Please, please don't forget about me. come back for me once you get whatever it is you're looking for."

The group rests long enough to feel recovered and ready to press on. it is difficult to tell time inside of this stone fortress, so you're not sure if it is morning or not when you prepare yourselves after a rest.

Letitia plots during their rest. When she awakes, she feels better and has an idea.

"Anna said there is a passage beyond the cave with the gorgon. I think our best option is still to bypass the beast entirely, assuming the layout of the cave is conducive to my plan. I can create a wall of ice to block it away from us. We can then easily go to the next passage without the risk of petrification."

Can we check out the spot within the partition that is still blocked off to us? Anything there?

'But of course she can summon a wall of ice', thought Llewellyn wryly but then he had a potentially foolish idea.

A little tentatively he suggested, "That might slow it down for a bit, but you know its going to bash its way through in time. If we can find a narrow corridor, perhaps you could summon a hemisphere of ice so it'll have to bash through it twice..."

Samuel wakes up full rested and tinkers a bit with his bullets while they discuss going forward. He smiles when Anna decides to stay there "No worries, we will make it back. I am sure your parents will feel very generous after all if we save you"

The man stands up and moves to the eastern corridor Anna mentioned the gorgon was in "I believe you will have plenty of rock at hand Callix, let's just only hope it is none of your hands"

And acknowledging Letitia's and Llewellyn ideas, he leads the way forward "Let's just get close enough to understand how the tunnels and room are, so you magic wielders can choose how to better trigger some attempt to encapsulate that gorgon"

During the rest, Letitia pokes her head into the last section of the living area. she finds a similar small 'room' set up with a bed and chest, but it is empty. there is a small layer of dust on everything, it looks like it hasn't been used in at least a little while.

Once the party is rested and ready to push forward, Samuel does some scouting ahead.

he finds that the passageway continues on for a good distance before coming to a small branch. angling slightly right the passage continues onward, descending down shallow stairs. angling slightly to the left there is an archway. Beyond the stone arch lies an impossible expanse of broad meadow in bright daylight filled with swaying wildflowers.

In the middle of the field there is a young woman standing with her arm over the broad shoulders of a brown ox.

During the long walk through the passage
Letitia looks back to make sure they're not being followed by Anna, and even has Lazlo hang back to keep watch on their rear.

Then, assuming they appear to be alone, she says in hushed but firm tones, "I dislike the way that Anna woman was so insistent on setting us against the Warden. For those of you who do not speak Minkaian, learn. I've been teaching the others and I will teach you." She shakes her head at the tangent and gets back on track. "Anyway, I was saying to you all that there is no reason to take Anna's word over the Warden's, once we meet her. Whoever she is. Keep in mind our goal. We must find Baba Yaga and the Warden, not Anna, is the better lead."

She thinks for a moment and adds, "But I am certain Anna is right that she is powerful and dangerous. I have heard of the spell that killed Anna's friend. It is fearsome, and unless you are mentally or physically resilient, it can strike you dead. Just as we plan to avoid the gorgon, it's best we not force a fight with the Warden if it's not necessary."

In the meadow

Letitia blinks once in reaction to the bright meadow. She doesn't immediately believe the vista is real or that they have been transported somewhere far away from Ioberia. Instead, she studies the young woman.

Is she looking at us? Does she have any resemblance to Anna?

Callix sighs, "Her tale is compelling, but I also noticed she was leaning into the poor, helpless me role, trying to hook into the urge to protect or defend the helpless... I can't think someone as helpless as she claims to be would have lasted this long."

Llewellyn almost raised an eyebrow when the granddaughter suggested not killing the warden out of hand, but he hadn't forgotten why they where here - as soon as they'd found out what they needed things would almost certainly look differently. Besides Anna wasn't being entirely forthcoming...

He nodded to Callix, saying "I don't entirely buy that line either. I'm pretty sure there's more to her story than she's letting on, I get the impression her anger is on a deep personal level. Anger like that is corrosive, it clouds your judgement, becomes all consuming. As for this warden, perhaps she still serves Baba Yaga, perhaps she doesn't, either way she's all danger. We need an audience, while I have my doubts if a peaceful meeting is possible, if it's to work at all it would be best it we've not killed half her minions!"

Obviously if this wasn't going to be peaceful then killing half her minions would been a mistake too, because they'd be leaving enemies at their backs.
