Samuel notes the forlarren does not go to Waldsby when the watch explains him. The Taldan nods to Nadya "You have been a good host to us. I don't want to be a further problem to you, but as you say, I would be most interested to buy some winter stuff" the man looks at the others in the party "We have not talk about what our further moves should be, and we do not want to lose much time, but your sleds seem fast... I guess it will not take us much to reach your town if we go with you, and we will be better equipped for our adventure afterwards..."

Samuel looks at the others to check if they are on line with him. If able to talk it more privately with the others the Taldan tells them "I think we can approach more Nadya, I feel she has further reasons to cooperate with us against the people at the Pale Tower. Something she said earlier makes me think that. Perhaps if we can convince her... we could hide on her next supplies convoy to the tower..."
Note she was up to tell us something more when she was cut up by the bard appearance

"If we're all headed to Waldsby, them I see no reason why we shouldn't travel together," Letitia ventures. "Perhaps, Nadya, you could tell us what manner of creature Mierul was, and what that story about the black rider might have been about?" she asks the native Ulfen.

RoW Maps

Nadya finishes loading up the sleds and shows you how to ride one if any of you ahve never sat on one before.

I will help you find whatever you need in town. it is a small town, and we don't get a lot of outsiders, but they are good hardy people. I'm sure you can find anything you need for your next journey.

to Letitia: I do not know exactly what that creature was, but she felt too smooth to me. The witches have eyes and ears everywhere. you never can tell when you're talking to a witch or one of her allies. That is why I have had to be careful what I say to you as well. I have worked hard to undo a misunderstanding with Nazhena, and I can't risk that coming apart now. I just... want things ot go back to the way they were... A tear forms in her eye, but she shakes it off and gets back to business.

Along the road to Waldsby, Nadya suddenly holds a hand up and calls a terse command. her crew jump down and use white blankets to cover the sleds and any of you that stay on the sleds.

a few moments later, the sounds of a flock of birds overhead can be heard. Anyone who is not under a tarp or who peeks out can see a flock of ravens overhead.

Once they pass, the group starts moving again, at a quicker pace this time. not long later you arrive in the little town of Waldsby.

(map of Waldsby added to page 3 of the Slides. Feel free to RP anything from the morning or the trip along to Waldsby. at least 3 of 5 wanted to go get some supplies and information next, so I'm moving things along. if you want to debate more about whether you should go to town or right tot he tower feel free to hash that out before we delve into the town too much)

Alec had held his tongue through most of the exchanges. He was a simple man and the stories being told in his presence were more than he could keep up with. He listened as people talked, but once Samuel and Letitia started to dance, he rolled over to get some sleep. "Wake me for my watch" was all that he said.

The next morning he spent in relative silence, going about his work without speaking except where absolutely necessary. He trudged along with the sleds, out in front with the scouts, his eyes always looking for trouble ahead. When Nadya gave the command and the others jumped into action, he dove into the snow for cover. With the all clear given, he stood up and dusted himself off before continuing the trek.

As they arrived in Waldsby, Alec remarked. "Quaint. Reminds me of Heldren."

When the danger passes Samuel looks out of the sled "What was that flock of raves? Why did you decide to stop and hide Nadya?"

---------------------

Samuel taps on Alec's shoulder and smiles wide with best mood in many days now "If they have Menander's venison flank steak and mumble pie with a Three Devil Ale equivalent I will call this Heldren and not think back of our town for a while" the Taldan looks for a tavern or inn where to pass the night or at least eat and hear last rumors about the Pale Tower and beyond.

"Thanks a lot for your help Nadya. If you come to visit us at the inn tonight, we can perhaps explain you more about our dealings, and you can tell us more about this misunderstanding with Nazhena" Samuel tries to look trusting while telling this to the woman and greeting her for the night.

After securing a room, Samuel will look for a place to sell the items the group does not longer want and perhaps trade back some supplies if there is an alchemy shop or an herbalist. The man is also interested on a cloak of resistance and some shoes to walk more easily on the snow.

Letitia also takes the cue to hide when Nadya has everyone take cover. When the danger has passed and Samuel asks his question, Letitia almost answers. "It's-- surely a witch thing, isn't it?"

Letitia is first and foremost interested in some herbs or bark or roots that she can use to craft another batch of hair dye, lest her white roots give her away.

RoW Maps

As the ravens move away, Nadya gets everyone moving again.

You don't know much about the north do you sir? when we're in Waldsby be careful who you ask such questions to, it will harm the story we are telling about you being relatives. Ravens are known to be used by the witches as spies. some are even used as familiars. there are breeds of ravens here that are much more intelligent than those in the south as well. i have heard stories of ravens who can cast spells on their own. if you don't want to draw attention from witches it is best to avoid their birds.

As you approach the town, Nadya warns you quietly that Waldsby doesn't get a whole lot of visitors. she asks you to try to keep from getting into too much trouble or stoking the fears of the very close-minded community.

As you enter the town, many people greet Nadya in a friendly manner asking after her recent journey. some villagers just stare at you or lead children away with hushed whispers. others seem interested in you, looking at the equipment you have looking for things to trade for from the south.

Nadya shows you where her home is located, a small unassuming but sturdy cabin on the edge of town. she promises to get some good northern clothing for all of you, and invites you to come by her house if you need anything or if you want to talk about the town or th area.

You all quickly realize no one is speaking in Common. in fact if any of you try, you find the people of this sleepy town don't even understand the language. Everything is being done in Skald.

Nadya points out places that may be of interest where you could trade goods or purchase supplies. she directs Samuel to the one inn, a place called the White Weasel.

something feels funny about this village, but it isn't until Alec says something that it clicks for you. This place really does remind you of Heldren, but in kind of an eerie way. the layout of the town, the location of the inn and some of the shops... there is even a statue of a beautiful woman in the center of town.

It is mid-morning right now. plenty of time in the day to check out the town and look for supplies or information. if you don't speak Skald, better buddy up with someone who does!

Letitia chooses a local bonnet or headdress to wear that covers her hair at least until she is able to properly dye the roots. Since she speaks Skald, she knows she will have to venture into the town with the others who cannot speak the language. She had hoped to keep interactions with the townsfolk at a minimum to avoid the risk of someone getting suspicious of her, but it appeared that she was needed.

She approaches Nadya. "So am I to continue to play the role of Samuel's wife while in Waldsby? Or was that ruse only for the fey's benefit?"

* * *

At the revelation that Waldsby is eerily similar to Heldren, Letitia grows thoughtful. She pauses as they move through the town at the statue and studies it briefly, comparing it to the statue she looked at closely in Heldren.

Samuel's presence gets grimmer as Nadya explains about the witch familiars. He looks at Letitia and thinks of her owl Lazlo, but he says no word.

After a short walk around Samuel is surprised to discover he understands some lose words his mother was using when he was a child.
Assuming Hallit is a close language to Skald

"Mmm... well, the resemblance is certainly strange Alec. Do you think this village was built by the same settlers?" the man comments as the group walks along.

He nods to Nadya when she shows her house "I will be glad if we can join you tonight for a meal. We can keep talking more calmly this time. Be assured, we will try to avoid creating problems"

Samuel is happy to go with Letitia into the shops, selling stuff and checking what is available for trade. He lets the woman talk and translate with the inhabitants of the village. At the alchemist shop he asks help with Letitia "We have these potions we found, let's see if we can find out what are they for..."
Samuel examines the flasks, looking for marks, a distinctive color, and even opens them up and smells trying to identify if he has find out a similar potion before or at least to help Letitia identify what they might be.

Callix closes her eyes, and takes a breath, Mother was right... there is something of this deep in my soul... and there is a comfort here. I won't say it's like coming home, as she promised, I'm far too much the city girl for that... but still, the language, the people... it's the stories of my childhood come to life... She begins a wry smile as her thoughts continue, Especially the part about the dangerous witches.. and, off course, the fact that it feels familiar might also be because of what Alec pointed out..

Callix thanks their guide, "Вы были очень добры, Надя, и мы в долгу ... и мы будем осторожны, чтобы не попасть в неприятности, которые могут быть связаны с вами, и добавить к тому, что мы должны вам." She then smiles, adding, "Я также думаю, что мы были бы рады принять ваше предложение посетить ваш дом и услышать любые истории, которыми вы могли бы поделиться с нами - хотя вы должны позволить нам принести вам еду, мед или вино взамен. Но сначала мы делаем покупки."

Skald:

You've been most kind, Nadya, and we're in your debt... and we'll be careful to not get into any trouble that could be traced back to you and add to what we owe you.

I also think we'd be delighted to accept your offer to visit your home and hear whatever tales you could share with us - though you must let us bring you a meal, and mead or wine, in return. But first, we shop.

She turns back to the others and says, "I have to admit, I'd rather like to go take a closer look at the statue, to see if it's the same person... I can't help but shake the feeling it will be... And that's got a whole host of implications, especially because I guarantee you, there's more than one tower, and so, probably, more than one portal. Still, that conversation can wait until after dark, especially since, for now, the shops are open."

Before parting for the morning, Nadya answers the questions posed to her

to Letitia: I am sorry, I hope I didn't put you in too much of an uncomfortable position by making that story up on the fly. It is not necessary to keep that story, but it would be good for you to come up with something that explains your being here. it is best if you keep the number of stories you tell low, and keep them simple enough to be remembered.

to Samuel: Thank you for understanding. I will tell you more about my story tonight if you are interested. please be welcome at my home, my sons and I will be waiting for you

to Callix: Do not trouble yourself by bringing anything, you will be guests in my home. guest-rights are important here in the north. if you have your own traditions of bringing food as a guest I won't stop you, but that is not normal here.

Several of the group are curious about the statue in town. they examine the statue of a woman and find that it does bear a strong resemblance to the one in Heldren. if it is not the same woman then it is at least made by the same hand.

An older man sees your interest in the statue and comments on it Ah yes, you see the statue of the Cold Woman. lots of rumors and theories about what she might depict. strange for such a simple statue.

While shopping, Samuel tries to identify the potions. he manages to identify four potions of Feather Step, and quickly spits out the taste as he identifies two oils of taggit. he can't place the other one, but Letitia steps over and almost effortlessly identifies everything in the pile.

As the old man steps up to her and comments on the statue, Letitia arches an eyebrow. "And what is your favorite rumor about this statue?"

She pay's little attention to the current conversations, fitting enough, she seems very uncomfortable in the town, or around people casually.

"Queen Jadwiga... the first witch?... would that mean that Heldren was also under the surveillance of the witches at some time?" the man looks a bit confused at the others.

When they are finished Samuel points to a large structure in the town "Wife would you like to have a calm drink at the White Weasel and have a warm meal? Perhaps they even have a piece of steak and a glass of hot wine" he makes a gesture for the others to join to if they wish.

Once at the tavern Samuel orders something hot and looks around for perhaps some more rumors the owner or the other townfolk can offer, specially paying attention to any piece of information about the Pale Tower "Hei! Why do you call this place the White Weasel?"

She's not one of Elvanna's children or grandchildren, but a descendant of Vasilliovna, the queen before her. She's particularly ruthless and ambitious. Before my exile, I'd heard rumors that she killed her mother to supplant her position."

He then turns to Alec "Well... this went far beyond of me too Alec, at the moment we were charged with such a great weight over our shoulders... I mean... there are those great heroes in their shiny Citadels, why to choose hunters and farmers to do the job?" he does turn then to Letitia and Callix. They seemed much more the kind able to pose a fight for a greater deed, but Alec and him... "Perhaps you and me are just the pawns Alec, but we should see to help these people to the best of our ability"

She sighs. "No, I think only Grandmother herself would get the likes of Nazhena to go against the queen."

The group (at least 3 of you, possibly Callix and Ashling as well) sit down at the White Weasel for drinks. the patrons don't seem particularly chatty with strangers, and particularly clam up anytime the Pale Tower is mentioned. they seem to go to lengths to avoid actually saying the name of the tower or Nazhena, instead calling her "The Lady".

at the question about the name of the inn, the barkeep just grunts and gestures towards a stuffed weasel, very similar to the one you encountered outside the portal, mounted behind him, above a very large and intricately framed mirror that spans the area behind the bar.

At one point, the barkeep's wife brings a tray of drinks to the table. she sets a steaming hot mug of tea in front of each person.
Welcome to our small town. My name is Katrina, my husband and I run this inn. We don't get a lot of foreigners here. I made you some of our famous winter berry tea, made from ingredients found only here in the north. hardy plants that make a bitter but invigorating brew that will really warm you up. please let me know if you need anything else!

Samuel spots the stuffed weasel and smiles at the barkeeper "I see. We had a skirmish with one of those a few days ago. A strong and stubborn creature, fiercely beautiful. Fortunately the thing understood the risk against our sharp blades and fled away after a few exchanges" the Sentinel looks proudly to Ashling and Alec.

Once their private conversation develops, he answers Letitia nodding in acceptance, making sure to talk low enough to avoid the bartenders hearing them "I see. That's a pity. Exploiting the witches factions rivalries could really pay to our advantage"

"Ah! I would have preferred the hot wine woman, but this berry tea is much appreciated anyway" Samuel offers a toss to the woman and then drinks half the cup on one sip "For you Katrina! And the northern kind hospitality!"

"Well... there might be something you can help us with. There is not much room at our cousin's house, so perhaps you know if there are some available rooms at town to pass the night" the rest of the evening Samuel will keep chatting with his friends and the bartenders while they wait for the time to join Nadya at her house for supper.

Callix shakes her head, "To be honest, I have no idea. I was born in the south, just like most of you... and while I've spent my entire childhood being raised to take up axe against the witches, my mother doesn't come from Irrisen, but the lands that border it and can still claim their freedom. Those people would certainly fight rather than submitting.. in fact, they have, and they've even established special groups that help them fight back. These people, on the other hand, I don't know. It's been centuries, and life under the witches may be all they know... ." She shrugs, then sighs,"And despite how mother described her people, the fact that they are so terrified of the expansion of Irrisen's borders means that it has happened... because, in the end, axe and shield can only stand so long against the dark magics... And, like any other people, there are those amongst the Ulfen who simply want to live, and will do what they need to do so safely and in peace."

She looks at the statue again, then starts nodding at the story, "To be honest, I'm very much wondering just what's happening on those borders right now... If the Blackravens, for example, are even aware of the internal strife here, and whether they have the means -- any means to exploit it. I never got the feeling from my mother that there was any attempt to try to turn the witches against each other, but then, based on what I've heard, I suspect in part that was out of fear of the impact on the common folk -- especially when one thinks about how the witches power much of their magic."

She sighs again, then follows the rest into the inn, smiling as scents of spice from her childhood wash over her, Just one more reason this place feels like home... or an echo of home... She sits and takes the tea , inhaling the scent and enjoying the strange bittersweet nostalgia it triggers in her memories, half-smiling to herself for a moment before returning to the present. She turns to the inkeep and says, "Чай пахнет божественно, но я не был в надлежащей таверне Ульфена годами ... и у меня не было должного медового рога в течение столь длительного времени ... и, исходя из того, насколько сильно мой желудок проснулся от запахов здесь кажется, то же самое относится и к правильному питанию."

"The tea smells divine, but I've not been in a proper Ulfen tavern in years... and not had a proper horn of mead in as long... and, based on how much my stomach has woken at the smells in here, it seems to feel the same about a proper meal."

Samuel's attention is triggered at something the Ulfen cites "Wait, you were raised to take up axe against the witches? What do you mean with that Callix?" as the conversation progresses he adds "Mmmm... the Blackravens, would they be able to help us if we come to them requesting for help?"

Sorry, I got lazy with the language spoilers on that post, her introduction and offer of the tea should have been in Skald.

Assuming someone translates Samuel's words to her, Katrina tries to reply in heavily accented and choppy Common.
"Is morning. tea is good for morning. Mead and wine for night. Bring you food now.
She looks at the group crowded around the table. "small inn. one room Accented by holding up one finger with emphasis. Sleep on floor? She points to the area near the fireplace.

To Callix:

Skald:

can you translate for me? I will bring you mead and wine tonight, but i can give you food and tea now. we only have one bedroom, you can either sleep on the floor or stay with your relatives.

She clearly sees Samuel as the leader, which follows with the story of him being the husband. she attempts to address him, but the language barrier is flustering her a bit.

When she brings out the food she sees Samuel's cup is empty. she refills his tea, and as she does so she leans over close and whispers in his ear

Samuel:

Samuel remains thoughtful for a second before just answering a bit confused "I do not know why I know. I just know it. They are watching and it is dangerous"

Alec had been sitting quietly and enjoying his hot meal. His own thoughts had wandered to his father, and the mother he never really knew. He had wondered if they had had a life like this once. Seeing the man and wife in the inn, he couldn't help hope that his parents had a happy life together, at least for a time.

He paid the others little mind. He didn't understand the language, at least until the woman spoke in broken Common. Even then, the words barely registered. It wasn't until Samuel stood up in a hoof that Alec's attention was brought back to the present. Still seated, Alec responded confused "and go where? We could use the rest, and a guide familiar with this area wouldn't hurt either. Besides, they have shelter, food, supplies...we should stay, at least the night."

Turning to look at Letitia, Alec asked "is that true? Could the witches be watching us here?"

Letitia waits until they are out of the inn and away from any villager before answering Alec's question. "Of course. They always could be watching." She glances over her shoulder towards the treeline where Lazlo is dutifully alert. "Their familiars could be scouting, or they could be using mirrors or even statues with their likeness to scry upon the peasants.

"But it's much more likely that a spy or someone looking to curry favor with the witches will report on a handful of strangers in town asking strange questions. Fear, desperation, and paranoia are excellent tools to keep the peasants behaving," she says with a note of satisfaction. Then she thinks about what she just said for a moment and her mouth turns into a frown.

While they march back to Nadya's house, her thoughts turn toward the Pale Tower. "Samuel-Husband, will we be going towards our goal tomorrow? Or has your sudden fear of white witches changed your mind? If so, where do you plan to go?"

Callix shakes her head, "If they're watching us and are suspicious, any additional contact with Nadya is just putting her at risk. I think we're far better to stage a reason to suddenly need to leave... maybe an argument between our newlyweds... and to get out of town without talking to anyone else."

She sighs, then says, "We'll need to find a safe place to sleep where we won't freeze overnight."

The group leaves the inn quickly and Samuel leads the way back towards Nadya's house. Callix urges caution about drawing more attention to Nadya before they reach the house.

Letitia:

Lazlo continues to patrol the area, but doesn't raise any alarms with you. everything seems to be business as usual in the town, which for a small town in the cold is a very slow pace of life

I'll wait to start any interaction with Nadya until you guys decide if you want to talk with her again or if you agree with Callix that a sudden and quiet departure is better. if you leave town without sleds you will ahve to camp somewhere along the way. if you buy or hire sleds you could make it by nightfall.

"This doesn't make any sense. Why would we pass up an ally? Nadya seems to know about the witches, she knows the land, she even knew about the Pale Tower. She could help us. I know it could be dangerous for her and hers, but this is bigger than one person....isn't it? Besides, her words already ring with an air of danger, as if she's already involved. She spoke of undoing a misunderstanding, wanting to return to the way things were. She's no ally of the witches, and she's done more for us than anyone else is this twice-damned village. And she's obviously an accomplished traveler of these parts."

"My father taught me how to survive on the land. Someone taught Nadya how to as well. It's not easy, and quite harder here I imagine, but's she's done it. She's no stranger to a hard life. We should ask her for help. Let her make her own choice. If she says no, then we press on alone."

It's a few minutes later when Alec continues.

"She has children, where is her husband I wonder?"

A young boy, maybe 6 or 7 answers the door. the family resemblance makes it obvious that this is one of Nadya's sons. he calls to her in Skald, and she comes out to greet you. you can smell something tasty being cooked in the kitchen of the small home.

Nadya invites you all in, a little surprised to see you so early but hospitable as ever. her two boys, twins by the look of it, are very curious about their guests and rattle off dozens of questions and comments, all in Skald. they don't seem to notice or care whether you understand them or not.

Nadya sends them off with another woman, and offers you places to sit on chairs, pillows or piles of blankets.

How has your shopping gone? were you able to resupply sufficiently? hopefully people were helpful. we don't get many outsiders here, so sometimes they are not very welcoming. but gold spends just as well here as any other town...

"You have been hospitable to us and thus, I think you deserve to know we are heading to the Pale Tower, even if that might place you in a bad position..." After a moment of thought she adds

I will tell you a little of my story with the witches, Samuel. If you are going into that damned tower perhaps you can find me some answers...

You see, in addition to the twins, I have an older daughter. she is 8, and has inherited a bit too much of my bluntness. Thora was with me in the town when the Lady was in town for some reason or another. My daughter repeated words I had spoken in private, words which insulted the witch. in a fit, Nazhena hauled my daughter away to punish her for her insolence. she was taken to the ice tower, and I have not seen her since. I am attempting to buy back her freedom by bringing supplies to the Pale Tower to work off this perceived debt.

If you do succeed in entering the tower, I beg you, please save my daughter. it is my fault that she is there, and I am struggling to pay the Lady enough to get my daughter back. I have already traded most of what I own to try to increase my shipments, in addition to losing out on the gold normally paid for those supplies.

Letitia had to very carefully hold her tongue while Samuel elected to leave. She'd argued plenty of times about their tactics on the other side of the gate and the southerners' propensity for delay. Now, in Irrisen, she had to bite back her comments lest she draw unwanted attention to her by the locals. While in the village, she was playing the role of peasant wife so she had to stay silent when her "husband" decided it was time to leave.

With his sudden paranoia about being observed by White Witches being so strong, she decided not to voice her observation that they were being observed by at least one -- Letitia herself.

She stays quiet while visiting Nadya, again because she did not want to cast suspicion on herself. She takes the few ingredients she purchased at the town and concocts a hair dye that will disguise her white roots which had started to show. She promises herself that she'll one day wear her hair white again.

Letitia steps out of the side room where she finished dying her hair in time to hear Nadya's story about her daughter. She stays quiet.

She smiles sheepishly at the others, "Sorry, in Common, I was saying that we would, of course, help... and trying to wrap my head around how much it seems my destiny was set and inescapable... Enough that I'm wondering if I should head toward the border and find the Blackravens."

All it would likely do is get her killed.
