Primeval Thule: The Idol of Daoloth

Game Master LoganDanger

The death of a sage begins a series of events that could bring about the summoning of an Elder God.

Feel free to discuss the campaign, your characters or anything else in here. I'll check it regularly for questions on the setting or anything else. Hope everyone has fun!

Male Human Reaver (Lvl 3)

Kortar would like to know a little about where we're starting out, if possible. You mentioned a murdered Sage: anyone we know?

You will be starting out in the city of Quodeth. It is known by many many names, The Peacock City, The City of Thieves, The Merchant City and a number of others. It is the largest city in all of Thule, rivaled only by Lomar. It has should have all of the services anyone should need and has a number of factions; also a lot of opportunity for distraction/trouble.

You will not know the sage, but the characters will no people that do. I am working out how the players know each other. I am currently thinking that you were all traveling in a trade caravan, either as guards or pilgrims. Whatever you have done to get from level 1-3 has given your names some importance with various factions in Quodeth.

Male Human Reaver (Lvl 3)

Oh man. Being out of his depth is what Kortar does best. All these soft people.

Finished Bullo's equipment. He is not a combat character. :D

Spoiler:

1000 gp shawl of lifekeeping
0000 gp hot weather outfit Covering your body from head to foot in light, airy cloth keeps you cooler than baring your skin to the sun. This does not stack with any bonuses gained from the Survival skill.

The outfit is designed to give you maximum mobility, and it's made of high-quality fabric. shawl of lifekeeping- ultimate equipment guide
This magical shawl is woven from silken, diaphanous material. Once per day, the wearer can speak a command word to transfer some of her life energy into the shawl (up to 10 hit points). If she is wearing the shawl and is reduced to –1 hit points or below, the shawl immediately heals her an amount equal to the number of hit points stored in the shawl. This healing cannot prevent the wearer from being killed. The life energy stored in the shawl lasts for 24 hours or until it heals the wearer, whichever comes first. If the shawl is destroyed, the stored life energy is lost.
While the shawl is storing a creature's life energy, it retains a connection to that creature. If another creature holds the shawl in its hand, the creature whose life energy is stored in the shawl takes a –2 penalty on Fortitude and Reflex saving throws against all effects from the current bearer of the shawl.

Wow, you have a lot of stuff!

So why do you think you are in Quodeth? Or mixed in with the other mercenaries? Also, in the setting, the Lomari are immigrants from Lemuria and are what one would think of as African. Their only colony is the second largest city in Thule. Perhaps your father was a wandering soldier or pirate and your mother a Dhari wise woman? Something along those lines?

The Dhari are the largest tribe in Dhar Mesh, but there are also the Bolotanga wind runners and a few Kalayan tribes.

Lomar is known as the City of Triumphs. They are a militant people whose entire hierarchy is based in war and military. They are industrious and are constantly at odds with Quodeth.

Did you get your cape anywhere in particular?

Thule is actually Greenland before the Glaciers took it. Just kind of a fun fact.

I guess it would be more accurate to say his clan was destroyed instead of his tribe.

The cape belonged to Bullo's mother in her service as wise woman.

One thing about Life (since that is his spirit...), survival is very important.
So, mixing in with the mercenaries might be dangerous but their company is also insurance.

Cool deal.

So I know Kortar is focused on killing things.

Since you are a non-combat focused character, what do you do?
It seems like he has access to a lot of Debuffs. Is that true? Are you also a healer or sorts?

I am hoping to get this going this week. I am waiting on 2 more completed characters. I feel like 4-6 is a good party number. It'll make for some interesting deliberation on some of the decisions you will have to make as a party.

Anything either of you would like to know more about?

Debuffing and healing are the general combat goals.

Those can be done outside combat too.

The animal rapport part of beastfriend allows him to give the shaken condition (foes only) in a 30' radius. But, unlike other abilities in PF, the DC is really easy. it is 10 +1/2 character level where things like sorcerer powers and channel are 10 +1/2 level + ability modiefier. it requires a hero point to do this but when used in such a way the hero point is refreshed daily.

In addition, he makes for a pretty good spokesperson with his very high diplomacy bonus.

I believe I am good on info. if I get to read some more of Thule, I might come up with some questions.

Male Human Reaver (Lvl 3)

I doubt Kortar knows (or needs to know) much more than what he does.

Just let me know when we are ready to go. :)

For those of you new to the Play-by-post I am going to link this awesome thread that I think gives really good guidelines on how to make the best posts you can.

http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2nr91?DHs-Guide-to-Play-By-Post-gaming

I am fairly new at DM'ing these but I have lurked awhile so bare with me folks. :)

I am still working out how I want to do combat. I see a lot of DMs appear to do combat for the players, but I guess I feel like that takes away some of your control. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Or advice?

I will not be posting maps, I am a big fan of "theatre of the mind" and I try to make combat feel as organic as possible. If you have a question about distance or spacing or whatever, just use out of character to ask.

Can't wait to play! Waiting to hear from just a couple more people, but we should be able to start this week.

For those new to this, don't forget to make an Alias for your character!

I don't think I've ever seen a PbP game where the GM ran the combat without the players making their own decisions much less played in one.

But, i'm game either way.

OK, maybe I am misunderstanding what's going on. I like everyone doing their own moves, so that's what we will do. Thanks!

The one thing I've noticed about the PbP games I've been in and read is that although they typically ask that everyone do one post per day that effectively slows combat down to one character's actions per day.

If the next person in line doesn't post his one time per day until late in the evening, then it may throw everyone else back a day. It is hard to get a whole group of players scattered across the country (and beyond) in different time zones and with differing work schedules to all make an appearance at roughly the same time so that combat can go in initiative order.

Perhaps what you have seen is a DM having everyone chime in with their actions and then the DM playing them out in order. Or, perhaps the DM will go ahead and perform actions of players who are "absent" to keep things going.

Just a couple of thoughts to keep track of for management of a PbP game.

That is probably what is going on. That's actually what I do in my other one with that I run for some friends. I will let people post when they can and I will compile the actions in order. I think that's easier for every. It might not be the most ideal, but I think it works smoothly.

That isn't too difficult to do with the "theatre of the mind" storytelling in place.

I think that caused some difficulties with 4th ed D&D because there was so much built upon knowing exact placement (for "slides", etc.) that it didn't play well without a map.

Level 1 Sentient Jelly

Boop.

So, how many do we have now and do we have a tentative start date?

So we have the Reaver, The Shaman, A Skald, a Fighter and a Rogue. I am actually working on the first post. I will get is up today sometime, but the official start date won't be until Friday. The Skald is having trouble with the computer so it'll give him some time to get it fixed. Feel free to post whenever you want.

I just realized I hadn't put my equipment into my character alias. Ooops.

Male Human Rogue 3

I'm still in the early stages of development for this character but wanted to at least get a post in with the name and avatar.

Hopefully, I'll have this finished by tonight.

I'm not sure whether your character is level 1 due to being not finished or, if like me originally, you missed the spot saying we are level 3. So, I figured to mention it just in case.

Derp. I forgot about being level 3 to start. Double Derp.

So I am trying to post the first scene, but every time I click submit, it takes me to a blank page. When I check the gameplay thread, there is nothing there. Am I doing something wrong?

Male Human Reaver (Lvl 3)

Couldn't say. Never run a campaign on here. Neither has Kortar.

Hey everyone, so an admin fixed the issue and the first post is up. Each character has their own start, I trust you won't peek at others. Feel free to post away!

Also, I just noticed a few typos. The admin had to post for me or something to jump start the thread. I'll be sure to correct the misspelled name and some other stuff in the future. Still getting a hold of the formatting too.

So, does this mean you want us to post our responses in spoiler too for the time being?

Nope, everyone has their something tailored to them, but ultimately you will have to work as a group.

Male Half-Elf Fighter 3

Hey everyone, Sycamore had to drop out because of family stuff. I will be playing his half-elf Fighter for now. I am new to this so I apologize ahead of time. I just signed up and I am working on posting the stats and stuff. Looking forward to this!

Silly me. I suggested we go on and didn't bother checking the list of people (given spoilers in te OP) to see more still needed to chime in. I'm a knucklehead. :)

Level 1 Sentient Jelly

Looks like we're waiting on Katsani.

Yeah, I haven't heard from him for a couple days. I think we will wait a little. I'd hate to lose someone on the first day. If he doesn't post soon, I guess we can assume that he silently tags along.....I guess?

Works for me.

Male Human Reaver (Lvl 3)

Cool with Kortar.

Male Human Level 3 Skald

And myself.

Well...I need to go ahead and withdraw from this game.

Unfortunately, I sometimes get excited by a really cool sounding campaign and forget that I do not enjoy the process of Play-by-post gaming. Add to that my distaste for Pathfinder and I just need to admit that I probably won't be around for the long haul on this game so it would be better to acknowledge that right now and bow out before things get going.

I fully intend to read along and see how this game plays out and I hope everyone has a blast. Have a great game everyone!

Logan1138 aka Katani

I'm sorry to hear that. Best o' luck.

Since it looks like our DM has set this aside for two to talk through, I haven't "butted in". If anyone, DM included, is waiting for me to post before continuing let me know. Otherwise, no hurry. I just don't want to be unintentionally holding things up. :D

Thought it might give some opportunity for people to ask questions before meeting the boss. Nothing was planned specifically for anyone. :)

Since this guy sent for the others and Bullo is a tag along here, I'm gonna let them talk. :D

Unless you want him to start talking here...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sorry everyone, I'm in the process of moving across the country and haven't had access to a computer reliably. I will have something up this evening, I promise.

Male Human Reaver (Lvl 3)

Bump!

Hopefully he will get settled into his new place and have internet installed. Trying to run a game from a phone would be a pain, IMO.
