Looking around in wonder, Claudia starts to answer each question as it is asked. "N...Ye...Wh..." Once Harjandi settles the over-enthusiastic mayor she focuses on him and responds. "Mayor Farzhan, thank you for your hospitality, I'm certain that once we have settled into our accommodations and gotten over our travel weariness, we will welcome any inquiries." She grins. Senna regards the mayor with interest. He seems too excitable. ”Hello, mayor. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I am Senna and this here is my companion Mist. I trust it will not be an issue for him to remain close to me. We are weary from the travels and would like to rest. Mist will be more comfortable with attention after he has some rest and a full stomach.” Mist yawn showing a large mouth full of long, sharp teeth. Cazlin bows to the mayor, but allows everyone else to speak their introductions. From the way he peers wide-eyed at everyone and everything in the unusually somber festival, its clear that he's chomping at the bit to take a look around.

When Wylka mentions a tour, he focuses again on the group, nodding enthusiastically. "T-tour... uh, please?" He looks between the mayor and Harjandi, hoping one of them will agree.

Mayor Farzhan mimics Mao and clumsily puts his hands together and bows: ”Good day, good day, good day! So wonderful and such an honor to have a guest from the Chabuan District!”.
Turning to Claudia: ”Oh my, oh my, excitement, enthusiasm, yes, yes, YES!”

Behind you, you see that the Spider’s Silk crew is preparing the ship for the return trip, that is to take you back to Ramparassad the following day.

Meanwhile Harjandi pulls you away from the Mayor, and leads you to the boarding house, where you are greeted by Unelda - a wayang lady - who has prepared six rooms, that are made for smaller folk.
Though this is actually fine for most of you, it is obvious they expected the foreigners to all be tall, thus they have lengthened the beds by placing comfortable chairs and ottomans at the end.
Despite this, the rooms are cramped for the taller of you, and all of you are taken aback by the drab black and dark-purple decor, from wall paper to sheets, including towels, and carpets…
Unelda tells you that ”the rooms are very safe, and you may store any gear you brought”, while Harjandi looks at Cazlin, telling you all: ”You are free to look around for a couple of hours. Tour! We can then all meet outside the large arena, that you cannot miss, it is on the outskirts of town”.

Suddenly, Mayor Farzhan comes bursting into the boarding house, pointing to Senna and Mist.
Two wayangs, carrying wide platters piled very high with all kinds of raw and cooked meat, come in.
Mayor Farzhan smiles: Full full full stomachs!”

For those who wish to spend some of the next hours talking to the residents who are preparing for the festival as you tour the city, please roll Diplomacy (Gather Information), telling me if it is your roll, or an Aid Another

Senna, not sure what went wrong. It kinda looks like you might have rolled your d20 and then copied the result manually into a new 'roll' that didn't have a d20 in the equation. Just make sure your dice throws follow the format {dice=Diplomacy}d20+5{/dice}, replacing the brackets with the right kind. You shouldn't need to do anything else after that, the roll will otherwise format itself.

BTW Is it just me or is the mayor super unsettling, lol.

Cazlin digs into the food, though he quickly finds himself looking for some bread to match the massive amounts of meat. The lack of anything to balance the carnivorous feast leaves him looking a bit queasy as the group finishes up and heads off into the town.

He follows Wylka, Tolinath and Mao, staying about a pace behind them as they wind their way through the town. He stares at locals, the architecture, but most of all the festival decorations. He pays particular attention to the masks they pass. His open (but silent) curiosity...

Diplomacy, aiding Wylka: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

... comes off as more rude than anything else. After the fifth or sixth suspicious glance cast his way, he draws closer to the other three and starts scratching at his flaking skin, once again looking anxious. Another riddle escapes him as they continue, though his one comes out more as a mantra than a question.

"I make you weak at the worst of times.

I bring sweat to your palms, a chill to your heart,
and conquering me is a good place to start."

Most of you eat and thank the Mayor and the servants, while Mao meditates - as does Senna after taking part in the feast.
Then comes time to go out and explore this exotic place.

A first group ventures forth together, Mao checking out the culture, Red seeking for festive costumes, Cazlin with an eye out for masks, and Wylka intent on exchanging with the local wayangs.

Claudia slips away on her own, trying to ferret out secrets.

While Mist trots along behind Senna, who is also off to meet and talk with townsfolk.
You all find that these townsfolk offer a number of entertainments and services.
As Red spots a street vendor preparing flat, unleavened, bread, cooked on rocks, like pita bread, he is surprised to see that he is not expected to pay: ”You honored guest!”, says the vendor.
It will be like that everywhere for all of you: you cannot pay for anything specially offered for the feast.
Thus you can let yourselves go wild, and enjoy all the festive food. Oh, what is that edible delight? Boiled snails dripping with butter! And those? Roasted nuts - no, Red, not those nuts! And, wow, are they spicy! Burns your mouth out. Luckily there are these creamy tarts filled with nice dark berries. Eek, that puckers your mouth right up, so sour!
Red does find out that the berry juice, though sour too, is actually fermented. Free schnapps?! Is this a dwarven heaven?
Cazlin sees that elaborate paper hats, similar to the one Mayor Farzhan wears, are also available, and he collects a few - you all can take one or two if you wish. The vendors are proud to have the foreigners choose their wares.
Three special kinds of booths catch your eye. These are places where a wayang, seated on some stool, offers body modifications. What is this one doing, is that some kind of watered down acid he is rubbing over the body? Oh, yes, why he is bleaching the skin! As for that one, who seemed to be a leather worker, he is actually performing ritual scarification. And, this one is simply placing piercings.
You see that this obviously represents important wayang traditions, and that it is down masterfully, with very little pain involved at all.
Who wishes to partake?
Though Mao was too shy to talk with anyone one on the street, and Red scared them away by trudging right up at them, while Cazlin simply stared without a word at those who tried to approach, thus making them change their mind, Wylka did exchange some with the locals, who felt more at ease talking with the cleric.
As did the wayangs that came across Senna. There are not many pets on the island, so Mist attracted attention, and was a good conversation starter.
As for Claudia, well, no, she did not find any secrets… thus she knows that it must be a bigger well kept secret they are hiding!
Anyhow, the world out on the street is that the local wayangs eagerly await your outsider participation in this year’s festival. As the adults hinted at, but the younger ones were more upfront with, the past few celebrations have been a bit dull, and many hope that newcomers can inject some excitement into the proceedings.
”Yes, boring, our parents are really boooring! Useless actors. Darn, I hope you dudes are gonna shake things up”, says a young wayang boy. His sister chimes in: ”Yeah! Shake it up! Shake it up!”. Their mother cuffs them on the head and whisks them away.
One thing all agree upon is that Mayor Farzhan has been practicing his part in the final midnight festival all week.
One old stooped wayang, raises his head, and, looking at Cazlin, mumbles: ”Practicin’ all week, yes son, but, is it just me, or is the mayor super unsettling?”.
Well, some more time to wander about and choose what you wish to eat, do, have done to you… and then it is off to the arena.

As he continues to mutter the mantra, Cazlin gets separated from the other three and ends up wandering through the streets in search of them.

Along the way, the overwhelmingly generous and welcoming locals finally manage to get through to him. He accepts a red and black paper hat that looks a bit spidery, setting it gingerly atop his head. Soon afterward, he stops to watch wayangs getting piercings put in. He stares with incredible concern as the 'artist' handily adds them to their 'victim'. Each time another one is put in he winces with a grunt. Nevertheless, he can't stop watching.

Before he can really think too much, he finds himself in the artist's booth, picking up a trio of piercings himself. Two studs through the left ear and a much more adventurous one above the right eyebrow.

He thanks the artist silently and a little giddily. Wandering out of the shop, he manages to pick up a couple of snacks.

-----

When he catches back up with the other three, he has sweets on sticks in both hands, mouth full. His paper hat is tipped at an angle and his fresh piercings stand out among his scaly face. He swallows what he's munching when he hears Wylka's warning, giving the cleric a wide eyed look "Too l-late. G-guard down." He looks a bit embarrassed as he nibbles his snacks.

He takes the advice to heart and sticks close to the others for the rest of their walk, eventually following Mao to the arena.

Red is having a ball, eating so much that the wayangs are amazed.
Then the same wayangs start clapping and cheering when they seems walking around with bleached designs and local piercings in his ear!

The passersby are also elated to see that Cazlin is sporting studs, wearing a hat, and eating all the local goodies.

Claudia is a bit dejected to find out that no one can point her towards a library, but, at least, the treats are good.

The three end up meeting with Mao, and Wylka, who tries to have everyone snap out of the festive spirit, at least somewhat, feeling that something is not quite right

Senna then arrives with Mist, having rested at the boarding house.

You are all gathered outside the arena, in the heart of the town, and are looking around, when Harjandi and Mayor Farzhan approach, carrying a tray filled with colorful masks and ribbons.

Mayor Farzhan looks at Cazlin: ”Oh, a sweet on a stick! Can I have one, can I have one?”

Harjandi cuts him off with a sigh: ”It is nice you took to some of our habits”, she says, looking at the piercings, Red’s bleaching, and Cazlin’s hat. ”And I have more than hats for you! You see, in this first part of the festival, each of you are to take on the role of a different historical Minatan hero, and, for each one there is an appropriate mask, and matching ribbon”

— Farzhan interjects: ”So that the spectators know which hero each is portraying. We have problems distinguishing between you”.

Harjandi rolls her eyes… and continues: ”I told you I would explain more about the heroes, now is this time. The six are captain Bu Lo Dama, Ilyamakano the druid, Lai Ligan from the circus, Nobali Hihachi the priest, Tiqa Vastrokardoyo the sage, and the trickster Whaoxi Sennen”.
She goes on to explain something about each of them.

See the Handout #1 (Intro’ + 1 paragraph per hero)

”The spirits of these historical heroes will be watching over you, and, if you please them during the Abbinthurtaa, might smile upon you !”

You see that the masks cover the eyes and the bridge of the nose, and each is a different color. The ribbons, one per color of the mask, can visibly be pinned anywhere.

You decide amongst yourselves about who will portray whom, while Harjandi and Farzahn leave you some space.

Discuss IC and OOC who chooses what, for RP reasons, or more mechanic ones.

Once that is done, and you have all put your mask and ribbon on, Mayor Farzhan puffs his chest, and, motioning you to follow him, ushers you into the arena!

With ribbons placed in your hair, and the masks donned - and Harjandi whispering: ”Do not remove them during the ceremonies…”, you follow Mayor Farzhan into the arena.
You move through a corridor, with hard packed soil, and, at the end, you see the light of an arena, and you feel a presence, something or someone waiting for you out there.
Mayor Farzhan tells you: ”This is the first even of the festival, and it takes place just before sunset. It is a mock combat in which you face off against a quartet of wayang champions, to show how we proud and valorous folk were victorious over the Minatans!”.
Harjandi whispers: ”Please try to only subdue, do not use lethal force, or as little as you can… and, by all your Gods, do NOT slay one of your opponents! They have been specially trained to only deal subdual and non lethal attacks, and have no weapons”.
You see several racks of weapons on each side of the corridor, where you can find wooden versions of any non-exotic melee weapon you can imagine. You know these will deal nonlethal damage without the usual penalty to attacks. These wooden weapons count as the standard versions of the weapons for the purposes of feats like Weapon Focus.
Having chosen your weapons, you move along the passageway, and into the area, where a—
ROAR!!! greets you: hundreds upon hundreds of wayangs sit in the stands of this large arena, many of them solemnly waving black pennants. They are cheering and chanting.
A number of low walls and raised platforms are scattered across the dusty arena floor.
The air is charged with an electric undercurrent of excitement.
Facing you are four rather sturdy and lithe wayangs. These martial champions have taken on the roles of wayang heroes from ages past. They are waving their arms, flexing, jumping up and down, and getting cheers from the audience.
All are unarmed, and only wear padded grey and black robes - but each has a ribbon: blue, green, red and yellow.
Mayor Farzhan waves his hands… and all goes quiet.
You all move to take your positions.
Then, all of a sudden, time stops.
You are all frozen, each of you, and you see that everything around is frozen.
Your mask seems to speak to you! The actual voice of this ancient hero sounds out, heard only by the one carrying the hero’s mask. You see that they are telling you how best to impress the crowd today, how to win them over.
Bu Lo Dama: ”Fight defensively for at least 1 round while threatened by a foe, friend, thus showing restraint in front of danger”.
Ilyamakano: “Perform the aid another action at least once, thus showing how unselfish you are”.
Lai Ligau: ”Successfully use Acrobatics to tumble through a threatened square at least once, or unsuccessfully attempt Acrobatics checks to tumble through a threatened square at least three times, thus showing how nimble you are, or that if not nimble you are not a quitter!”.
Nobali Hohachi: ”Charge an enemy. But something tells me I did not need to tell you this! Thus you will show that you fear nothing, that, well, that you are Red!”
Tiqa Vastrokardoyo: ”Gain cover from an attack from one of the low walls or gain a bonus from fighting from higher ground, thus showing how astute you are at always using the surroundings to you advantage, and adapting!”
Whaoxi Sennen: ”Successfully use Bluff to feint against an opponent at least once, or unsuccessfully attempt Bluff checks to feint at least three times, thus showing it is a sound tactic to befuddle your enemies, but that if you cannot it best to persevere and never give up trying!”
Then the spirits all smile upon you, and— time comes back to normal, with the crowd CHANTING!.
The fight is on!

Mao tries to look around to find where the voice was coming from. Realizing it's one of the heroes giving him advice, he smiles and prepares for the task at hand.

My gratitude goes to you honorable Lai Ligau. I shall do my best to continuously give honor to your name. I hope you don't mind that I use my fists for this reenactment.

He moves towards the center of the arena and sets himself behind a structure that sort of looks like a barricade. He nervously bows at the cheering audience, trying to compose himself.

Do not let fear overcome you Mao. It is just a reenactment. Just do what you are told to do and remember not to harm anyone.

Cazlin securely dons the Ilyamakano mask and picks up a small-sized wooden naginata from the rack. He makes a couple of experimental swings and nods in satisfaction. He ties the green ribbon to the haft of the weapon so that it can flutter as he swings it.

Once he's outside, he takes up a position behind the rest and twirls his new weapon dexterously as he waits for the beginning of the show match.

In response to the voice speaking out, he thinks "Ilyamakano is it? Are you really there or did I pick up a second curse?"

Senna looks over the weapons and chooses a dagger and a sickle. The weapons feel familiar to her small hands, and she tucks the dagger into her belt. She whispers to Mist before the mayor waves his hand. Time slows to a halt and Senna hears a voice that seems to be coming from her mask. She looks around to see if anyone else can hear it. Confused and overwhelmed by the arena, Senna and Mist move to the barricade opposite Mao.

So, I'm not quite sure what I'm doing. Let me know if I mess up.

Waving to the crowd he hefts his Large Dwarven Waraxe high waving it at the crowd, not menacing like off course. He ensures his mask, black as a starless sky, will stay attached to his rather large Dwarven head. Weaving the black ribbon through his beard and up behind his shoulder to flutter behind him as he charges to and fro.

Pointing to one of the Wayang brawlers he blurs out "Yur buy'n the first round. Second on' is on meh!"

Under normal circumstances I would take the wooden weapons but this is how my character would act and plus he has to live up to his Minatian Heroes legacy lol. I will include the -4 to attacks in my rolls.

Claudia, Red and Mao take no weapons,

Wylka grabs a wooden glaive and Cazlin a naginata, while Senna takes a dagger and a sickle.

Then, after the first wayang came running up, Mao moves out, followed by Senna and Mist, all going behind the barriers.

@Senna: you are doing fine. Please keep on asking if you feel unsure, but doing great!

The wayangs in the yellow and red robes rush forward too, you see none are very fast, being small.
And, suddenly the blue-robed wayang moves too - the crowd is silent, being surprised, before understanding that since you probably will not be in contact this round, the GM pre-moved blue just to speed things up a bit. The crowd nods, understanding this.

The other Pathfinders come moving up, some charging and bashing anything in reach, others stealthily slipping around...

The crowd cheers as the wayang ducks when Red swings.
Not that the wayang needed to, he is just feeding the crowd's pleasure.

But, as the wayang ducks, his comrade in green-robes behind leaps forward, moving around yellow-robes, and coming straight up at Red, his clawy-wayang arms outstretched.
But the outstretched arms do not claw at Red, they try to wrap around his legs--
Grapple: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
--but sturdy dwarven legs are not the same scope as spindly wayang ones, thus the attacked misses totally.
